Duct tape a teacher to the wall

As a rookie team this year, we had no ideas for non-build season fund raisers. We went to a small informational FRC meeting "Splash" before the kick-off, and there we met the Edina team. They were very helpful in recommending fund raising ideas to us, and one idea that they had come up with but not yet tried was duct taping a teacher to the wall. We took that idea and expanded on it, getting four teachers and our principal to volunteer for the event. We talked to our city paper, who published an ad for us, and printed out posters for us to put up around town. We sold duct tape for 50 cents a foot, or 10 feet for $4. Half way through, we lowered the price to 25 cents a foot. We did the teachers in shifts, so they wouldn't all be standing on chairs for hours at a time. IT went really well, raising us around 250. All the materials were donated, and many younger kids came to duct tape the teachers (mostly his kids and their friends). I would recommend this as a fun pre-season kick off for your own town/city and as a fund raiser. It's fun for all, and the teachers were even laughing! We also timed how long each teacher remained stuck to the wall, and our, uhm, 'largest' teacher remained on the wall for almost an entire minute, and was only beat by our science teach, at almost 2 minutes held to the wall by duct tape only!

Thanks! Really. the Edina "Green Machine" team should get a lot of credit for putting the idea in our heads, we're just crazy enough to put it to use.

Nice idea I hope my team can talk our way into doing this.

And I get to give the word of caution...

If you do this, make sure the plan is well communicated. We tried to do this a few years ago as a school spirit booster / fund raiser and we were stopped by an over zealous group of parents who said it had the feel / appearance of bullying. :(

If the principal, teachers are in agreement with the fund raiser, it might be helpful to have them sign an agreement form, stating that they support the fund raising efforts of the team and they understand that it is done in the spirit of fun and entertainment. It will not harm the participants.

It could also be cool to have a safety captain on duty during the fund raiser helping keep things on track. For this, the team members could take shifts as safety captain if needed and it could be a promotion for the team's respect for safety.

Just some thoughts.
Jane

You guys may want to check out this whitepaper:

Our team did this back in '03 and it was a huge success for the team. The kids ran everything, and Brandon did a phenomenal job writing this up.
