102 will be there again :D and we are definately looking forward to it :D

Which other teams (besides 102) will be submitting chairman's this year?? Good luck to all teams... it's only 1 month away (and a few days haha)

(any way we can move this topic into the Competition section so it's easier to find???)

Re: Long Island!

I'm not going :( -- because its the same weekend as when we go to Boston :)

Someday I'll get to go and take my father there so I can explain the game to him in person. He lives on LI and goes every year and enjoys it, but hasn't a clue whats going on. So if you see an 80-ish-year-old man wandering around watching say hello and explain the game to him. Thanks.

Scott -- I believe the LIRR goes to Hempstead and you can take a bus to Hofstra. Try here http://www.mta.info/libus/routes/routes.htm with the N70/71/72 bus.

Check again, two years in a roll NYC teams have traveled to the Long Island Regional at Hosftra using LIRR or have taken the MTA Nassau County buses from Jamica Bus station (F train to 164th St).
Worth the trip.

And take the bus from there? Gosh that is a trip! (That's the trip I used to take from Pratt to home.) You'll still have to transfer at, what, Roosevelt Field? (Still wish I was going, but my trip will take longer than the F train and N24 combined!)

Exactly. It would be the Q30 to the N22 to the N70/71/72 for me. 2 hours of sitting on a bus instead of a 15 minute car ride..such a hassle.

Roger 26-02-2008 08:41

Re: Long Island!

Couldn't you take the Q30 to Jamaica and catch the LIRR to Hempstead? Oy. I guess either way you'd be travelling a while. Bring a good book!

Re: Long Island!

From the SBPLI site info:
Quote:

Getting To Hofstra U. By Railroad
From New York City:
The Long Island Railroad provides regular commuter service from Pennsylvania Station in New York City to the Hempstead station, which is less than two miles from Hofstra’s campus.
Take the Long Island Railroad East on the Hempstead Branch to the final stop "Hempstead." Depending on the day and time, a complimentary blue Hofstra bus may be waiting at the station to take visitors and students to the Hofstra campus. The bus makes several stops on campus. Otherwise, just take a taxi for a short 5-minute trip to the Hofstra campus.

Me and others from my team want to go too. Maybe we can get one of our faculty members who owns a van to drive us up there. Or we can squeeze into my moms car which is what people from my team we already planning on doing. Or we could all just head up together using public transportation.

I have been informed from Ashley Marshall from Team 102 that the Gearheads (her team) will be webcasting the Long Island Regional! She asked me to post the URL on here so you all could watch!

You can find the webcast (starting tomorrow) at http://team102.frc

I have been told that it shouldn't matter if the 'www' is included or not.
Team 102 is hoping to get this up and running tomorrow!

If you have any questions, Team 102 is the team to ask!

The rumor around the pits was that they broke one of their 18" X 3/4" bore pneumatic cylinders for their shooting mechanism. Not sure if it's true or not though but it sure sounds plausible.

Re: Long Island!

idk - Takes note to ask tomorrow...

Well all isn't too bad

The SI Teams are doing ok
522 - McKee's in 5th.
1688 - Pt. Rich is somewhere around 16th.
371 - Curtis is hanging around 28 (Much better then usual, usually they're in the back somewhere)
375 - SI Tech is bringing up the rear (Shocker :ahh: )

Def. a change in standings for the SI Teams (well for the bottom 3 anyway - McKee likes to hang out with the top dawgs)

Real interesting top 8 / 10 so it'll be even more interesting if it changes or stays the same come alliance selection.

Crosses fingers for 8 Awesome Alliances

I am not actually sure why the link is not working.
Ashley Marshall from Team 102 contacted me from Long Island and asked me to post that exact link for her on CD.
Other than what she told me, I don't really have any information.

I believe those awards are pilot awards for starters (FIRST is trying them out similar to the best cart award to be given in NYC)

I have no clue what the awards are suppose to mean though - I too am confused

LOL I should have been more specific.

I know the scores - just wanted a more detailed description of the action.

I'm sure I'll hear all about it when 2010 returns home.

Re: Long Island!

Really close matches and with the current scoring system it left the teams on the edges of their seats. Esp. when the Game Announcer was waiting for the scores themselves.

I think the highest score for the day was 98 set by alliance #2.

I visited the table in the corner of the arena where the camera crew (you know what I mean) was stationed. Based on what I learned, I think you should speak with someone from team 353.

Musical Theme: For the past two years Long Island First has held a contest in which teams can produce a theme song for the regional. The winning entry is played throughout the competition.

MVP: Each team was asked to nominate one of their members as the "MVP". Each nominee received a certificate and one nominee was chosen as overall MVP.

Greening Award: This award was presented to the most environmentally friendly team. I heard that the winning team conducts highway cleanups.

Congrats to everyone who got in an alliance or got an award.

I would like to say a special congrats to Sayville. They were very gracious and professional with us. I didn't think they were rookies. Great job guys!

I'm a bit dissapointed that we didn't get in, even though we placed 19 and people lower then us got in...but I'm being overdramatic. We should be proud we got such a good place, sinse we are made of a 4th grader, three 5th graders, a 6th grader, five 7th graders, and two high-schoolers. Our driver was the 6th grader (congrats to him, too). We did very well.

Again, congrats everyone! Good luck to The Gearheads, Sayville, and 2010!

It's listed on the bottom of : http://www2.usfirst.org/2008comp/events/LI/awards.html

I'll add just a bit to what Joe mentioned.
These are three local awards SBPLI-LI FIRST has added just to our event, not FIRST awards.

The Musical theme award is intended to attract and involve other elements of the school to FIRST. In Hauppauge's case we involved the music department, specifically, the budding composers and recording media teacher. (unrelated) We also had our concert band perform at opening ceremonies were Matia was honored. The theme is then played throughout the competition as a signature piece.

The Greening award was new this year. SBPLI-LI FIRST wanted to highlight the importance of solving our ecological problems. The winner Team 871 West Islip, has been involved in Adopt-a-Highway since 2004, spending one Saturday a month and have picked up more than a ton of trash and recyclables.

The MVP award is to recognize individual contributors to the success of a team and to the objectives of FIRST. The overall winner is based on an essay submitted by the team leaders. Sort of a student Woodie Flowers.
This year's winner, Suliaman Usman, is a senior at rookie team 2476 Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park. I had the opportunity to work with Suliaman and he really is the driving force behind getting this rookie team started.

Hello, I am the team 102 member responsible for the aforementioned webcast at Long Island. I setup the wireless network on Thursday. Unfortunately I noticed that nobody was going to use our wireless network because the Hofstra Wireless Network offered Internet access. Since you can only be connected to one network at once people had to make a choice between the chatrooms/webcast/radio and open Internet. Obviously people chose Internet. Thus on Friday and Saturday I decided not to lug the server/WAPs back to the university.

Additionally "team102.frc" is NOT a mistake. If you were connected to our wireless network on Thursday and typed that in you would be connected to our landing page. You can't access it from the Internet... only from our network.

I hope that clears some stuff up.

Newsday, the local paper here on Long Island has some really NICE footage of the competition from the practice day on Thursday.

The footage can be found here: http://www.newsday.com/video/

Look for the video titled "Robot Wars on Long Island"

Yeah I know it's not really a robot "war" but it's still some nice video footage.
