Hybrid mode (default movement?)

When the hybrid period starts, are we allowed to tell our robot to do something without pressing any buttons?

For example, if I had my four buttons mapped to foward, back, spin left, and spin right.. could I tell my robot to move a piston immediately once the hybrid period starts before sending any commands to the IR board?

Thanks
