Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

Not really depressed...more like drained....and tired after spending all day driving 200 miles and delivering it to the drayage terminal and 200 miles home.

We get to go out for pizza tonight, as a family, and see some non-robot friends! wow!

The depression is worst when I go home and don't have anything to do but luckily the NJ regional is in less than 9 days

Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

Drained and more then a little depressed. But then I think about the regionals coming up and my mood brightens:D

Why not use the free fedex freight shipment?:D

In previous years I hated to see it go because I knew it wasn't "done". This year was a little easier because mechanically everything works. I just wish we could have let the programmers play with hybrid mode a little more. Oh well, I guess that's what Thursday is for!
See you at Chesapeake!

Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

I was talking to a couple of new parents at the scrimmage that ausTIN CANs put on here in Austin on Saturday. I told them that the students (and mentors) will be tired and will also feel a let down/sadness after ship. I think it is because they won't see their 'team mate' for a while along with getting used to not having the pace and schedule of build. I have a picture from 2004 where the team is walking away as the FedEx truck is leaving with PHlappy. It shows the slump in their shoulders. Good food, some rest, and maybe some fun team building exercises will help cheer everyone up. Also, the Fix It Windows to plan and look forward to and of course, our regionals. Woohoo!

Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

I still have to coordinate our award entries, our team shirts, presentation boards, spare parts, tool crate and juggle a job hunt. I have more than enough to keep me busy until we compete next week. :)

It's bittersweet. I'm totally drained and I look forward to some R&R but it's always sad to see a build season end but after Atlanta is worse. I have FLR and Championship too look forward too and Webcasts in between.

On another note I hope everyone's build season went well and good luck at your various regionals.

Because we're saving it for the between regionals shipment...we're going to Phoenix and Los Angeles.

I guess its worth it.
We are paying 880 from VCU to Chesapeake, then 2600 from Chesapeake to Hawaii! If we didnt get the NASA grant, competing in Hawaii would have been 4-6k for regional entry fee plus 2600 for shipping to bring it back to Hawaii.
Had Hawaii been a week 1 regional, we could have brought it to town, about 1 hour drive, and use our Fedex shipping for a week 2-5 regional in the mainland, then pay only to send shipments between regionals in the continental US like in years past.

As we were closing up the crate, we started discussing the fact that this may be the last year for this crate and we'll build a new one next year. As we started talking about it, I looked at our wonderful student leader and her face had the look of, 'omg, I'm a Senior...' - the beginning of many happy sad moments throughout the rest of the '08 season for our Seniors.

I don't feel depressed. I feel relieved.

I get depressed after our last competition with a good robot.

Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

A little bit... cause nowo there's nothing to look forward to afterschool.

But over here, I guess the sky was more depressed because it started crying when the robot was being packed up.

Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

It's my last build season and last ship day as a student, so it was rather bittersweet to see the crate loaded up into the truck. Though, at least the robot works this year.

Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

We didn't crate up until 3:15am...

so at that point I was beyond emotions like depressed. It was into the part of the night where emotions fall into three categories:

1. tired

2. tired and confused

3. bohemian rhapsody karaoke

I was feeling all three.

But yeah, I want to go do something to it. At least polish the chassis or something...

Otaku 20-02-2008 03:24

Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

Glad I get to sleep -- (I just slept 6 hours or 7, and I'm going back to sleep because it's half past midnight), social life is nice too, just mostly glad that I'm not going to be in the shop much anymore, I mean yeah robotics is fun but when you're in there working for six weeks/four weeks/whatever I actually worked for, it drains you.

Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

I wish i could have seen Fedex pickup our robot. Now we have time to do the things that nobody wanted to do during the build, like t-shirts and such.

This was about how it went for team 647 and while I was the only freshman not asleep at home when we packed up the robot , there were three seniors and a junior who ( and me) who left around 5:45 AM.

I'd have to say I feel the same way. Our robot is almost completely done mechanically (I think we're getting a lighter chain, thats it). All that is left is for the programmers to work out a few bugs.

Oh and the mentor from Oconomowoc told the FedEx guy that we were supposed to ship to Chicago o.o It was actually pretty funny.

Not me, but that's probably because as the head scout, I have more to do once the robot ships  It was a little weird yesterday, though, getting in the car at 3 and driving straight home...

We still have meetings twice a week. No idea what we're doing *shrugs* But I don't care. I'm going to die when the season ends D:

Our team has found that the off season can be productive with outreach and fundraising. It's also a good time to work on team organization: handbooks, etc. The team is smaller then but there are enough members that remain active that we can make plans. There are also great off season competitions to attend, hopefully in your area. If not, start researching what it would take to pull off a successful off season competition. That could keep you pretty busy. There's always something to do that is productive and will help your team grow.

Re: Does anyone else get depressed when they ship their robot?

Great question. The answer is YEAH! Building the robot took alot of time, especially my social life, but when I saw it in the crate I just wanted to take it out. Its so hard to hand over something so important to you! I wanted to hurt the Fedex guy.:(

of course im not happy that the robotics meetings will drop off,

haha for me, it is a time for mixed emotions. I am relieved that it is done, but sad because it was so much fun building it. I got to become friends with people I probably would not have otherwise. However, I get PUMPED and impatient for the competition.

I was depressed everyday when I left Robotics, but yes especially after when we shipped the robot since my life is robotics but now my mom says she gets to see me again
