What is a 'Field Judge'?

I was hoping some of you seasoned members out there may be able to give me a description of the role of a 'Field Judge' or what their duties include. In all of my years, I don't ever remember hearing about a 'Field Judge'.

much thanks

Where was this referenced?

I believe a field judge would be watching one particular thing on the field during match play. In 2005 I was watching 1 low goal for poof balls and counting them on a clicker as they came through. It was one tough job too!! Balls came in fast and just as fast they were picked up and thrown out! I think they called that position a field judge.

So this year they'd be making sure the laps/hurdles were counted right.

I think we called those positions scorers or counters.

There doesn't seem to be a field for it in VIMS.
Hmm..

My best guess is that it is a Judge (for awards) but one that is based on the field as opposed to one who walks around the pit & talks to teams. More of an on field performance Judge.

But then again, that's only a guess on my part.
Where did you get the job title from Ashley?

I have received a request to be a field judge, and the only description I have thus far is:

"This person must interact with the judges and assist them with the decision making process of which teams should receive the various awards. They are asked to observe teams during matches and report back to the judges. "

Was hoping someone may have experience and enlighten me with more information.

Will post if I get a more detailed description.

Sounds like they want to remove the problem where teams would hype up something about their robot, then it'd fail on the field, but since the judges wouldn't know since they are still interviewing, they'd get the award. Basically the Judges give you maybe a list of 10 robots to watch for a specific technical award, and you tell them which ones live up to what they said, which ones under perform, which ones over deliver, etc.

:]

That sounds like a great volunteer position! And that makes sense since Scoring is being done by the referees this year. (I don't have any past history to know who has done what...)

... Your robot judges don't watch matches? I find that a little odd. LSR judges are always roaming the pits, watching matches, checking out teams in the stands, etc. And we have some judges that are over 80.

Of course they watch matches, but it's hard to do so all the time. I think that's why this created...

I think this is a good one to take directly to the source, FIRST.

Re: What is a 'Field Judge'?

I asked the Coordinator for a more detailed overview, and this was the response. I hope to have more of the questions I sent back answered.

"We have had this position in Philadelphia for the last few years. You can image that the judges are very busy interviewing teams in the pit. In order not to depend on talking to teams and watching a few matches to make their decisions, the field judges provide important information by watching teams that have been selected by the judges to make sure their robots performs well on the field. We're trying to make sure the most deserving teams win the various awards."
