Re: 2008 Regional Chairman's Award Winners
I was just wondering what you guys did to achieve the awards? Like community service, etc.
|
Re: 2008 Regional Chairman's Award Winners
You can look at our Chairman's submission here: 2008
and pervious years submissions here: 2007 and 2006 Of course, these are just reports of what our team did and what we felt was appropriate to report that would be of interest to the judges. Achieving the award is a matter of judgment by some human beings that are looking at quite a few incredible teams. After not winning a Chairman's Award, we wonder, "what could we have done better or I wonder what the judges were looking for...?" which, of course, is our competitive impulse talking. After a day or so, we realize that the things that we did, mostly, were not done for awards or recognition, but rather that they were fun or it was a very positive experience for us or others and it just grows year after year. More of a function of how much energy and time we invest. Planning for the Chairman's Award a year ahead is great for brainstorming, but in the end, your team will do what is intrinsically satisfying to yourselves while being of service to others. Since we are not bing involved in the judging process, we can only guess how the volunteers decide on the one winner. We tell our Chairman's team, after they have written the essay and practiced their presentation, that, if the judges are truly wise, they will study what the team has done (over three years?) and make their call. The Chairman's team (or essay or presentation) does/does not win the Chairman's Award, but rather the efforts of the entire current team and those who have graduated and parents and those who have been touched by your team. However, being humans, judges will possibly be influenced by the emotional impact of our presentation and the quality of the written work. So, looking at other entries and seeking advice is good, but in the end, you will do what you do because it is satisfying and the Charmian's just happens (or not). |

Re: 2008 Regional Chairman's Award Winners
Already there are some major teams to win it. 71, 340, 234, 27 and 291...
You could even make the case that some "newer" teams could take it. 1523 is one. This year is hard to call...and we are only half way done! |

Coingratulations to Team Rush. This team has had a quality program for so very long. As everyone has pointed out above, there are so many deserving teams. I am glad I am not a Chairman's judge this year. It is going to be very hard to choose a single outstanding team. With teams like 71, 27, 234, 34, 126 and 340 just to name a few that I know, First will be a round a long time. Congratulations everyone!

I have a question - which of these teams have names that are related to the school mascot, and which don't ? For example : 399 the eagles, 842 the falcons, 476 the wildcats, 34 rockets Do these also double as school mascots or are they unique to the team ? I'm guessing maybe 20 % correlate to school mascots ?? |

Re: 2008 Regional Chairman's Award Winners
I can't say anything about the other teams, but our school's mascot is indeed the Eagle. Our team colors, however, aren't related to the school.

Re: 2008 Regional Chairman's Award Winners
My personal belief is that the chairman's awards submissions should be made public to the FIRST community. Not only as a system of checks and balances on wether or not the team has done as they say but also as a way to inspire other teams. We are always more then willing to share our ideas in the pits by why not with everyone?

It's just part of our "open source, raise the bar, GP" philosophy. I think reading other submissions can inspire other teams. We host the regional FLL competition and we have a camera and microphone in every presentation room. That way parents and others can watch their team without being physically in the room. It is a very popular feature. It would be neat if the Championship (if not the Regional) chairman's Award was videotaped and made public. Perhaps all the presentations could be taped and given to presenting team. Anyway, we agree with you. We learn so much from each other. We host the NURC competition and we tape and/or web cast everything we can. We have received many, many emails from groups thanking us as the videos and documents are better than any textbook. |
Re: 2008 Regional Chairman's Award Winners
So of all these great teams, who has the best chance to win the big one? My vote is for 236.
|
Re: 2008 Regional Chairman's Award Winners
What's the rule on Championship Chairman's Award elgibility teams? Is it ONLY teams who have won it this year??
Basically what I'm getting at is there are what, at least 41 teams in the running if it's only this years winners?? I think it's time to award more than one at the Championship Event. Or limit how many a team can win at the Regional level. There are some great multiple year Regional winners in every part of this country. Even if we were to only give the Championship Chairman's Award to the teams who has won more than once at a Regional level, we would still be here for 10 years. As the number of teams in the program grows, so should the number of Awards based on Trophies. In the long run, we have so many great teams at the Regional level that it's very proud to know that we have all these great teams in FIRST, but also at the same time very discouraging to see a team win (the same) regional multiple times in one year, and other teams who have great programs not. I'd rather see variety on the C/A side of things than consistency in all honesty. Just my 2 cents though. I'm glad that once you win a Championship Chairmans Award you are ineligible in the future to win again at the Regional level. I also know this is the (albeit twisted) reason some people are cheering on local teams - because they themselves are a little discouraged at seeing the same team winning over and over again, and can't wait till they have that Championship win which will force them to stop winning at the Regional level. I'll be completely honest - I'm cheering for 236* because of this very reason. (But I'm also not saying they don't deserve to win, as they have proved that they are C/A worthy time and time again by winning at the regional level - I just feel it's time to give some of these multiple regional winners their Championship Chairmans Award trophy, and move on handing them out to different teams at the regional level. *I'm only singling out 236 because I've personally seen them be awarded the C/A regionally multiple times. I know there are other teams who have done this as well, I just don't know numbers off hand. |
Re: 2008 Regional Chairman's Award Winners
I'd say leave it as it is. that is what makes winning the Chairmans Award so great. to be one of the few teams to have won it and go into the Hall of fame.
