Most Exciting Final?

My vote is San Diego--out of the 3 final rounds:
2 of them had a 4-point or less score difference.
One of the matches was won 108-106.
The last round went down to the last few seconds.

GTR 2008

1114, 2056, edit: 703 vs 2386, 1305, 2166

yes, thats rite, I can see the future =P

But in all seriousness, I enjoyed VCU today. Although there wasn't much herdling, the finals were really tight. I'm glad 1086 won.

Got any video? If so, I can think of a few people who want to see it. The Gameday chat was wishing there had been a webcast...

EricH, I think 980 was recording SD. At least, that's what the list in the "Archiving Recorded Regionals 2008" thread in the Scouting forum.

Midwest and Portland were pretty exciting, but if the scores are any indication, SD tops them. Can't wait for the video!

I question your choice of 1547, Where's Waldo, hailing from Trafalgar Castle School in Whitby, ON (Our hometown, also). After watching them at New Jersey in Wk 1, I was less than impressed... though I agree with 1114. 2056 I will take as definitely viable, after their impressive showing last year winning 2 regionals and IRI, all with 1114 (after all, they were mentored by 1114), though we haven't yet seen their offering(unless I missed it on CD). 2386 was definitely a respectable rookie showing at Midwest, and I haven't seen this year's showing from 1305, although again, I'm sure it will be at the very least respectable, and again 1114 mentoring. As for 2166, I don't really recall their robot last year, and I can't say I've seen anything this year.

My choices would be GTR 1114-2056-1075? (yeah, i know, voting for myself) v. 2386-1305-188? ? = maybe.

Equally as impartial as you ;)

but, I saw all regional web casts last week; and I called a buddy in phoenix/FLR/VCU. We all agreed, San Diego finals was more exciting.

Don't believe me? Watch all three matches, they were all close and were decided by last minute plays. Unfortunately 330/294 got entangled for a good 30 seconds.

Finger Lakes final had the X-cats manipulator break and need a replacement robot brought in, then the second match was nearly the last match but a penalty let the Blue Alliance win, then in the final match there was an 8 point difference in favor of the Blue Alliance but they announced that there was a penalty... For like five minutes the whole stadium was tense until they announced that it went against the Blue Alliance and so team 20, 191, 174, and 2053 were the winners. Very exciting to watch.

And the very underrated and under-appreciated Warlocks. 1507 was the number one seed in a very tough FLR.

It was very similar to LA in 2006, Beachbots on the #1 seed with an undefeated team, and RAWC as #2 seed facing only one loss, and then the #2 seed upsets the #1 seed.
And then also SD last year, the 1717 and 294 were finalists to 330. This year, it was opposite.

But the alliances of 987 and 968 were quite epic to say the least.

The one thing I notice about this game is that it's pretty bland during qualifications but is electric to watch in the elims. Especially from the semis on. It's probably going to be amazing to watch Einstein this year.
And just imagine how IRI is going to be!

Drwurm 10-03-2008 00:24

Re: Most Exciting Final?

As Powercoach(not to be confused with robocoach) for 294, I might be a bit biased, but that was one of the most exciting elims i've ever seen. Our drivers played amazing defense in the final match, blocking a 987 ball place, and thus securing the win. To be honest, I didnt see 1717 or 968 hurdling, because my eyes were glued to our bot, but from what i've heard they were pretty good too ;D.

Hopefully videos will surface and I can watch the matches from a better angle.

I think we're forgetting that it was 987's alliance, not 330's.

It was my opinion that 987 was by far the best robot at the event after the qualification matches.

I don't mean to take anything away from 330, who also had an awesome bot, but 987 deserves a whole lot of credit for going undefeated. They had to play some tough teams to get there.

987 has established themselves as being one of the top teams on the west coast (and nationally, last year) year in, year out. They are a great bunch of people, and a pleasure to compete with.

as a rookie this year i was definately impressed by 987 and didn't know they were world champions last year. Through they were an amazing team, i think most of the teams at san diego seemed to side with 1717 and RAWC. either way, it was very exciting!

That's probably because 294 and 1717 were in finals last year, and 968 was well known there as well. the other alliance only had only one high profile team most SD teams know of (330); although, they really should've known of 987.... Both are amazing teams. I'm guessing it was just 3 familiar teams (maybe 2 1/2, 294 was in finals last year, but not very noticeable) vs 1.

EricH 10-03-2008 01:47

Re: Most Exciting Final?

The SD finals had not one, not two, but three former/defending world champions. 294 (2001) faced off against 987 (2007) and 330 (2005, and the only one to have been on Einstein twice). Also, 968 was a world finalist in 2006. I hear the matches were intense, to say the least. Haven't seen them yet, though.

so far, from what i've seen (MW, NJ, VCU, AZ, and KC) i have to say Midwest was the best, not that it was exciting just to watch 111 v 1114. not because 1114 and 1024 could put up HUGE numbers in hybrid, not because of their strategy, but because it was FATHER v SON. i totally loved the storyline, i believe in what Karthik said last year at waterloo, no matter who's playing, every match as a story, and to reveal this story about two mentors on 111 fathering two mentors on 2041 was a amazingly good storyline to follow for the finals

the storyline for each match can be something amazing almost as exciting as the matches themselves. i look forward to see if 1305 can get past their (what is it now 8 elimination rounds) streak of falling to the heals of 1114. Waterloo and GTR will be VERY entertaining.

As a member of Team 1717, I know that our alliance really appreciated all of the support we received from other teams. It was a great joy to be able to be a part of such an energized and vivacious crowd, all cheering us on. Thanks again to all of the teams that came down and celebrated with us.

Best of luck to all teams for the rest of the season. We look forward to seeing you in Los Angeles and Atlanta!

You have no idea how good it feels to be on the other side of that win too. The 2007 San Diego finals was epic as well--going down to the last second in the final match and 330 took away a great win, but the opposite just happened this year.
I can't wait until Los Angeles to see what it has in store.

I guess this just goes to show how competitive the west coast is.

I saw the midwest webcasts and thought no regional could top it; I was wrong. The SD finals were that good. 4 Elite level teams and the matches being decided in the last seconds by clinch moves? Cmon, can't beat that.

Re: Most Exciting Final?

Nothing will compare with the finals matches at Midwest. There you had Wildstang on one alliance (111, 1243, 1504) facing a 2nd year team from Chicago with my son and Raul's son mentoring on the other alliance (1024, 1114, 2041). The tension was excruciating. Who do you cheer for??!? Which side of the field to stand on? Who are you going to celebrate with? Which alliance are you going to watch? How many matches will it take to decide?? Well it only took two, the son's alliance won. That alliance really was a great collection of robots and drivers. Now they qualify for the Championship in Atlanta and just need to raise the money.

If you weren't there in San Diego to view the finals, you missed a treat. By far the BEST finals I have ever seen! I thought Team 987 The High Rollers had the BEST designed robot. Going undefeated is difficult and they did just that. Great team, great coaches, players and members! I haven't viewed the Midwest finals so I can't vote for them. I feel that going the 3 matches to determine the win was a great drama builder. You could feel the stress, tension, and drama. We had just about every team down by the rail cheering! I mean Cheering VERY loud! "Blue Alliance!!!" It was very cool to see the teams rallying on their alliance. Oh....and how about those dancers? Team 1671 "The Blizzard" had some nice dancers. Did you see them on the jumbo screen?

It was a great final! I will treasure the memory forever.

Heck, no. I did trade them a 108:1 42mm Banebots transmission. Hardly top secret.

I attended San Diego Regional and watched the Midwest Regional webcast.

I actually thought the MWR Semi-Final 2 (1114, 1024, 2041) vs (1625, 16, 648) was more exciting that the MWR Final. There were four fast, excellent hurdling robots involved and it took three matches to decide the semis.

The SD Regional was a crazy shootout in the first two matches and a total brawl in the rubber match. The extended "zebra conference" after the third match added to the tension. San Diego was the "da bomb"!

wow...all i can say is wow. That third san diego final... Blue lap bot kept one of the two red hurdlers in that quadrant for about 1:07. During that time the other red hurdler only made 3 hurdles and the two blue hurdlers only made 3 hurdles also because one got stuck between the two stuck bots and the red lap bot, and the other looks like it got stuck on the bumps near the centerstructure...

wow

Re: Most Exciting Final?

Basically what happened in FM3 of SD is 330 turned around and went back to obtain a trackball with their ball arms open. 294 was rounding the corner and the 2 robots plowed into each other. One of 330's highly powerful ball corralling arms got jammed into 294's lift system and they became entangled. Fortunately they were able to break apart near the end.

294 went on to keep 330 from getting a trackball to place and then got in front of 987, sent up their lift, to make sure they could not place.

Upon closer inspection after the match, it was discovered that we had actually sustained a bit of damage from the entanglement. The 3rd stage of our lift became dislodged and there were scrapes of yellow paint inside o_0. Luckily, this was repaired before recrating so 294 should be ready to swing when LA comes around. This time, we hope to prove the functionality of our lift hurdling during practice and qualifications so that we end up being seeded and not 47th. Also look for us to be testing out new autonomous.

We hope that 330 and 294 get to compete or even get to be allied together at LA. We also look forward to seeing our partners again: 1717 in LA and 968 in Atlanta.

I thought it was pretty incredible when our [2102's] motors on the inside our our left transmission came loose, and in 8 minutes we managed to take off the transmission, open it up, tighten the motors, put it all back together, and drive beautifully.

That was semi-final match 2; 2102, 1138, and 1572 VS. 968, 1717, and 294. We ended up losing that match, and the match after, but I think the crowd was very impressed seeing only us students working on our robot, and managing to fix it, and have it running for the next two matches.

Close, yes. But the same caliber as SD? A quick look at the scores says no:
San Diego:
106 - 108
122 - 94
60 - 64

SVR:
76 - 34
30 - 36
66 - 58 (and this is one of great debate...)

Whatever your opinion on SVR was, I think it has to be it. It literally came down to inches three times. The second game was decided by a penalty (not exactly desirable, but indicative of a close game), and in terms of the fourth game, even though the score wasn't -that- close (a whole 8 points!), 8 was literally less than a foot away from knocking off the red trackball and winning the game. Of course, the third game is a thing in itself, but this is not the topic for that discussion...

So far (week 3) the most exciting final for me had been the last match between 111, 1024, & 876 vs 461, 45, 1327 at the Boiler Maker.

Two powerhouse alliances doing full metal combat.
Top that off with the worst webcast feed I've ever seen where you couldn't make out much with the image freezing, the sound going out or the stutter.
I ended up swallowing my tobacco when the end finally came and I couldn't tell who had won.

Congrats to both alliances for a great final!:ahh:

Re: Most Exciting Final?

I think that FLR final was extremely exciting.

20, 191, 2053 (red) vs 1126, 378, 1551 (blue) for the first match: 80-68.

Then 191's arm completely broke off. A replacement robot was needed. 174 was brought in but red lost the second match 50-68. Then red won the final match 66-60 with a penalty deciding the match.

You may look at the lower scores than some regional finals and scoff at the lower quality of play but that was largely due to great defense. 1126, 378, 1551 had played 5 matches before the finals. They averaged 81.2 points per match and only once scored below 74 points and only twice below 82 points. They were held to 68, 68, 60 points in the finals.

Offense is great to watch but its even more exciting when you add a defensive element to it, so that it involves more strategy than just lets try to get as many hurdles as possible. Notice when people are praising the SD regional, they call it a great match between 4 hurdlers. FLR wasn't between 4 robots, it was between 7 robots (including the replacement).

Yeah, it kind of sucked. Our power cord came disconnected so we couldn't even move. It's frustrating that something that simple screwed up the entire match, but hey, we still got to the finals! And 93 did do an amazing job and they deserve major kudos for holding their own out there. Team 1652 (Robot Mafia) also really stepped up to the plate in the quarters and semis, helping us out a TON. :D

i have to agree...the only thing better would have been winning the match. i have watched alot of the finals and next to the SD and conneticut regional i think detroit was one of the highest scoring regional final match up:D .
and it was two powerhouse alliances

But in all seriousness, I enjoyed VCU today. Although there wasn't much herdling, the finals were really tight. I'm glad 1086 won.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Florida. The first round of finals ended in 72 to 74!! The red alliance lost team 69 in the first thirty seconds by being tipped by 233 (no hard feelings guys). From this 233 received a 10 pt penalty. The game ended in a 72 to 72 tie, but penalties and bonuses, the blue alliance pulled through by 2pts. That was one of the most intense matches I've ever been in.:yikes:

It seems like everyone on this thread is saying that whatever regional he/she went to was the most exciting one.... what about people who has seen the videos of a variety of different regionals around the country?

SVR was really controversial, and a lot of other regionals were close (detriot/FLR), but I still stand that San Diego had the most exciting final 3 matches as far as coming down to the last second goes.

In the first-final round there was a 32 point switch in the points in the last 3 seconds:
12 pts - 1717 placing a trackball!
8 pts - 968 hurdling a trackball!
12 pts - 294 knocking out a placed trackball!

The FL Regional was indeed exciting!!! 233 Pink Team, Cybersonics, and Children of the Swamp 179 wowed me. 801 Horsepower was also good. Of course MARS 1523 was also mega awesome!

Re: Most Exciting Final?

I have attended three regionals this year (STL, DET, KPRC), watched one (SVR), and watched part of one (SD) and I would say Detroit was the most intense. Detroit is always one of the loudest regionals, and this year with 217, 27 and 47 all being in the finals I thought I might go deaf. Couple that with four of the most historic teams in FIRST (469, 217, 27, 47), the amazing hurdling that was going on (RUSH getting 6 in their second match, 217 getting 5 both times), 2 WFA winners coaching against each other, the Number 1 alliance showing a ton of GP taking a timeout so "217" could work on their robot. It was intense with 27 making one of the greatest last second plays I have ever seen and all six teams having some of the best driving I have seen this year. These matches were so hard fought the carpets were basically torn to shreds on both ends (I think we might need new carpet for WMR). This was one of the greatest matches I have ever seen, and all six teams should be commended for putting on an impressive show.

1251 moved right behind behind 179 as 179 complete the hurdle. 1251 bumped behind 179 and accidentally hit 69 as 69 was completing a hurdle. Because 1251 brushed by 69 and caused 69 to be in a vulnerable position on the overpass, the penalty was assessed to 1251. 233 approached the clearing traffic and caught 69 as they fell on top of 233.

One can view this starting at 1:10.

Without penalties the score was Red Alliance 72, and Blue Alliance 84. 10 point penalty was give to blue, and thus the 72-74 game. The trackball placed on the overpass at the end of the game made the difference. A very close match indeed.

So far I haven't heard anything too exciting that can match weeks 2, 3

Re: Most Exciting Final?

I realize that I am claiming my own regional as the most exciting, but I would have to say that the second match of finals at Buckeye was really exciting. 1990, 1731, 94 v. 1024, 1126, 2048. 1990 was disabled for most, if not all, of the match and the underdogs still nearly won. The score was 68-64 without penalties, but the final score was 58-64 to 1024, 1126, and 2048.

Now if we go into semi-final matches, 1629, 191, 2228 v. 1024, 1126, 2048 was freaking amazing. It had to be one of the high-scoring total matches so far this season: 128-106 in the second match.

I would say the Davis Regional was the most exciting, but then again, I was in it, so that isn't really a valid point....

Remember to bear in mind that Sparx (1126) couldn't move either in that match due to a battery failiure.

I forgot that 1990 was out too... huh... we only had four robots running in that match. Rough finals! :ahh:

Sure wasn't L.A. That was over after the first pick, sealed after the last pick. There was only one third match, and it didn't involve the #1 seed at all. It was to determine who got finalist.;)

Frankly, I've never seen a FIRST final -- FRC or FTC -- that wasn't exciting. Choosing "most" would be very difficult. Seeing two red alliance robots hurdling at exactly the same time in the first match of the Seattle final was pretty darned cool, though. The final score was 82-80.

WMR, with all the errors with the scoring system...1st match had to be redone, 2nd match was a tie??? then the 3rd and 4th matches actually ended up with winners

Re: Most Exciting Final?

The Philly Final of #1 103 272 834 vs. #2 341 365 84 certainly needs to be in the conversation. It is probably the most exciting final I've seen in my years in FIRST (this game produces some great elimination matches). There are some great accounts of the final in the Week 5 Look Back. Here is my own account.

As soon as 103 picked 272, I (as well mostly everyone there) was pretty sure that their alliance would be unbeatable. The way they dominated through the Quarters and the Semis only reinforced that idea. The Road to the finals for 341, 365, & 84 wasn't quite as smooth with a tie (after penalties) in the first Quarters match and some close Semis matches against 237 816 and 1370.

The first match was a blowout (128 pts) for the red alliance of 103 272 and 834 winning hybrid and never looking back. It looked like the finals would be a quick sweep (as we all expected), but the rest of the matches would be very close.

Match 2 started with blue (341 365 & 84) winning hybrid by a significant amount. Red quickly made up the deficient and it was back and forth the whole match. A key rejection by the Overpass of one of 103's shots seemed to be the turning point. In the end it was 114-114, with Daisy was going for a place but couldn't make it to the Overpass through the defense. They dropped the blue ball at the last second and they turned off the scoring display as the ball rolled across the blue finish line. The ball counted and they announced the score as 116-114 blue alliance. As far as I can tell that is the highest combined score for a finals match (tied with Detroit finals match 2). It also is probably the most exciting match I have ever witnessed.

Match 3 also started with a blue hybrid victory and 103 slamming into the wall and losing their bumper. Again it was close the entire match. In the last 20 103 broke their drive while in possession of a ball near their home stretch. Daisy placed on the Red overpass to make it 98-80 Blue (88-70 after penalties).

After matches like these you really appreciate the energy and sound of the tiny Drexel gym. I still don't know how the blue alliance of 341 365 and 84 pulled off the upset, but I'm pretty sure it took all the luck my team didn't have in the Qualification matches. Hopefully, the videos will be available online soon.

I second that Philly Finals match 2 is the most exciting match I've seen this season. There wasn't a single dull instance and you saw everything from defense to offense to assists and alot of flying trackballs.

In my 8 years, I've never seen anything like the Philly finals this year. Match 2 in particular was probably the most intense two minutes I've seen in FIRST. EVERYONE in the stands was into it, even though there were only six robots out there.

I remember SCREAMING at the top of my lungs for Daisy to drop that last ball - fortunately it fell right on our front bumper and rolled forward for the deciding two points.

Nail-biting, heart-pounding, and breathtaking.

I don't want to speak for John, but I think he is working on it off his VCR recording. By Sunday he already had a long cut of all 3 finals matches on DVD. I saw plenty of other recording devices on the feed as well. I am also very excited to see Daisy's PBS show, since the footage they got from Philly was Pure Gold :D (get it? Champion and CA gold medals)

This year, Philly was pretty exciting. The finals were 103, 272, 809 (834), VS. 341, 365, 84. I recall the one match score was 114-116. and the 3rd match of the finals was that way too. I was so exciting.

the entire eliminations at palmetto were really exciting! one of the quarterfinals went five matches long! one was a tie, and one was a replay after a scoring error. the finals included two ties and no double digit wins. none of the series' wen only two matches. all of them went at least three matches.

so yeah. palmetto was exciting:D

One of the final ties we only had two bots and the last match we had no functioning hurdlers! very intense on both sides.

Definately San Diego. Every single final match was so intense, the teams participating in the final matches all had world class robots. I remember packing up and hearing final scores being announced, all over 80. Very impressive regional.

There are some embedded Google videos of all 3 finals matches (official feed) on our website. The audio is delayed ~5 sec (something that happened during Google's encoding). I cut the semis 2 (against 237 816 & 1370) and quarters 3 (against 357 1727 & 709) matches as well and will upload them as well.

EDIT: It looks like TBA already has some video from the stands. I'll try to upload some stuff there too.

Newton's quarter finals number 2
Quarters 2 Match 1 39 20 207 179 1251 1625 102 to 112
Quarters 2 Match 2 207 39 20 179 1251 1625 112 to 100
Quarters 2 Match 3 20 39 207 1251 179 1625 112 to 102

Holy cow. The scores were so high and extremely close. until the scores were announced, nobody knew who actually won.

Are there any other elims that both alliances scored more than 100 on all the two or three matches?

Oh, and all the penalties in those matches made them even more unpredictable. I think one match our alliance scored 130 but got 3 penalties and ended up losing. I am glad our alliance was the only lower seed to put up a really good fight. Newtons eliminations were awesome to watch and had me going crazy to even think about getting out of qf's. If we had beaten 20, 39, and 207, we would have had to play the 1 seed in sf's and then the 2 seed in finals. Both of those alliances were pretty scary.

Yeah, I know. Those thoughts were occurring during qf's and I wasn't too sure of the 3 seeds chances of taking out the 2 seed.
