Rob, this is great news to hear!! :)

Keep me in the loop on this one!
I'm sure myself and the rest of 237 would gladly like to come compete, and/or help out in some way or another that day or even in the planning stages!

Looking forward to this event!

Yes we set this date after talking to our friends at Battlecry. It is the date they would have used this year if there was not work being done their campus

We are planning on a smaller number of teams for our first year. Most likely 24.

We haven't yet figured out our summer tournament schedule, but 1519 is definitely interested in attending if our schedule permits us to participate.

Re: "Where is Wolcott? Invitational" 14th June

When is the deadline for registration? My team is definitely planning on coming, but I looked through the registration form and saw that we need to fill out the number of students/mentors attending. We're not planning to meet again until after our April break is over, and we're going to meet once or twice a week instead of six times a week, so I just want to make sure we have time to ask everyone.

dsmoker 24-04-2008 12:20

Re: "Where is Wolcott? Invitational" 14th June

Just sent off our registration form. I estimated the number of students and mentors that will be attending based on our typical attendance at competitions, as we will probably not be meeting again for a couple of weeks.

We're holding a NEMO meeting at BattleCry - any interest in holding one at WIWI? If so, I will contact the organizers and see if we can arrange for it.

Guys I am sorry for the delays on responding.

Checks can be made out to Wolcott High School

The Web site will be updated with other information tonight as I whip our web site team into shape

We have no deadline for registration ATM as we try and fill up to 24 teams or so.

I would love NEMO to be there and would be happy to talk to the organizers

Do you mean Aces High 176?

Well Aces High is planning on attending. We'll be using this competition to begin a transition from the veteran pit/drivers to who ever wants to be involved next year. Unfortunately during the heat of a regional, some students don't have the opportunity to try something new. We'll be using this off season event to get underclassmen to try new things.

Re: "Where is Wolcott? Invitational" 14th June

Sorry for the typo, it is Team 176.

We now have 11 teams. We still need more. This is our first invitational, conveniently located in Southern/Central Connecticut. It would be awesome if we can fill up the 24 available seats. We're about half way there.

Teams who are registered- it would be greatly appreciated if you can help spread the word. If you can talk to other teams that you know in the area, and maybe even send them the information, it would be a HUGE help, and bringing us one step closer to putting this in motion.

Thanks for your support.

Teammax 14-05-2008 21:40

Re: "Where is Wolcott? Invitational" 14th June

Also, as mentioned before, there will be awards to give out at the end. One of our mentors told us tonight that there are 16 awards being given out. We only have 11 teams to give them to so far. Some of them include:

Best Design
Spirit Award
First to Find Wolcott

and of course, the invitational winners.

Re: "Where is Wolcott? Invitational" 14th June

I figured I would personally testify that Team Gus has the most delicious pulled pork sandwiches you will ever encounter in your life. Seriously. I would come just for the food.

Really, though, this invitational is looking good. Our team has been putting a lot of work into it and it should be a fun day for everyone who attends (and an exciting one, look at the registered teams!). All we need now is the full 24 teams for a perfect start.

I'm excited already.

Our plan is to have a web cast. Unless we have some unforseen issues it will be happening. But, with this our first try at an invitational we dont know everything to expect.

Also, the coordinators for Beantown, WPI, Mayhem, and IRI have all been very helpful to us so they deserve our thanks

Hooray for 195!!! I was going to call one of your mentors to try to strong-arm you guys into attending (need to call him anyway to get our IR board back). Mentors from 195 were kind enough to point out to me that Wolcott is near Southington so they were thinking about attending; if it hadn't been for them, I would have been driving up to see WhoCTeks instead on June 14! :yikes:

Geographically speaking, 195 has the win with distance. (sort of)*

It's 13 minutes from 195 in Southington,
17 minutes from 228 in Meriden, &
24 minutes from 237 in Watertown.
(Oh, & only 18 minutes from Lake Compounce btw, so if anyone wants to hit up a great New England theme park afterwards, that's a great opportunity as well, & yet another draw to the area!)

*Then again, door to door from my house to the Middle School the event is being held at is only 10 minutes, so I get to just roll out of bed in the morning for the competition & be right there for a change. I'm lovin' that little fact.
w00t! :D lol

(And, since that is the case; Rob if you need any help the night before with anything, PM me here, & I'll send you my number.)

See everyone there! :)

I'm not entirely sure at this point. One of our mentors, Ted Martin, is taking care of the registration. I don't remember hearing 195 on the list, but if you e-mail him at max1071frc@gmail.com, he will probably get back to you and let you know.

I believe they're looking for a perfect 24 teams, but I don't know if they're taking more or not.

Either way, I'm glad to see that more teams we know might be coming!

It's been confirmed, we are holding a NEMO meeting from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Where is Wolcott? Invitational. Open to all adult/college mentors from all FIRST programs; come and go as you need to. Room location TBD (check with the registration desk). We'll have a general discussion of non-technical topics unless someone prefers a focused session on a particular topic - like communicating with your community, communicating with your team, giving presentations to a potential sponsor, teambuilding exercises, team organization, fundraisers, dumpster diving (finding free stuff), planning travel, etc. - e-mail me at kathiek (at) firstnemo (dot) org if you'd like a focused session.

I'd love to see some new faces; please share this with your teams' mentors!

Team Max attended the Mayhem in Merrimack invitational yesterday (which was excellent, by the way!) and got the field home and our questions answered. Things are really shaping up for the coming weekend, and it should be a lot of fun! Any questions can still be answered here, or by contacting one of our mentors. Don't be afraid to ask (or to get unreasonably excited :D ).

Of course we are! This is also my last FIRST event as a high school member of team 1124... so it's mixed emotions. I'm sure it will be a great way to end my high school FIRST experiences, though. Our team is bringing some of our graduating eighth graders who are interested in robotics and guiding them through what the team is like, since current members agree that the way to get hooked is through a competition. See everyone in the morning! :)

Edit:
Btw, for anyone who is interested, in addition to what will be a great event, & GUS Team 228 catering lunch with their awesome pulled pork BBQ smoker trailer & everything, it looks like they (Team 1071) will be selling T-Shirts at the event for 10 bucks, & also be having some raffles.

I'm so excited! It was a long day setting up, but definitely worth it - there's a field! In our gym! It's bizarre to be on the other side of the fence, being excited over refereeing instead of competing.

Admittedly, after the measuring and lifting and unpacking and velcroing and ziptying, there were several extremely entertaining games of human overdrive...

If it was this much fun getting ready, I can't wait for tomorrow.

Ooh, now I really am looking forward to tomorrow! In my mind, the different trophies given at different offseason events are one of the best parts of going to a bunch of events. From the homemade ones at Merrimack, to the diamond-plate battlecry trophies, I've really found trophies at offseasons I've been to as being creative and great.

Just had to do a little last minute math and juggling to make sure we could get all the kids and equipment there with one less car, as by the time we got home it was too late to get a rental and the place doesn't open until 9:00 tomorrow by which time, of course, we will have discovered where Wolcott is (hopefully) and be there!

They are awesome! Kudos to Team 1071 & whoever came up with the idea for how they came out! :D

Now I want to see the trophies! What do they look like?

Also, I'm excited about the t-shirts they're selling. I have a growing collection of robotics t-shirts. I can't wait to see!

I guess I should get to bed though so I have some energy left for tomorrow. See everyone there!

Re: "Where is Wolcott? Invitational" 14th June

Thank-you/congrats time!

- Thank you to everyone at the competition for making my last competition as a high school student a memorable one.
- Thank you to Team 1071 and all of the amazing volunteers who made the very first Where is Wolcott? Invitational so much fun for everyone.
- Thank you to Kathie K for organizing a NEMO meeting and her continued support of the NEMs.
- Thank you to whoever "relaxed" <G22>. It was interesting to see how it played out the way so many people suggested, even if there were still a few infractions.
- Thank you to team 195 for not losing faith in us and for being great alliance partners!
- Thank you to team 181 for being gracious opponents and offering your time out to us. (:
- Thank you to everyone on team 1124 (students and mentors) for making my last competition as a high school student with you guys fun.
- Congratulations to teams 181 and 230 for winning. You had a great alliance and you definitely deserved it.
- Congratulations to everyone else who won all of those neat-looking awards (Elgin was right, they are cool.) There were so many of them I don't think I named them all.

I'm pretty sure I forgot someone in that list- there were a lot of great things and people today- but I'll remember it as a great experience. Thanks everyone!

Thank you to 1071 for their amazing referees and volunteers
Congratulations to 181 and 230 on their win

Ditto the thanks to 1071 for a great event! Thanks to 228 for the great pulled pork sandwiches and for being such great alliance partners. And kudos to our friends at 230 and 181; you were a powerful alliance and fun to watch!

Now you remind me who I forgot to thank, it was 228 for making a yummy lunch. How would any of us have been able to make it through the day without lunch? It is critical to the FIRST competition energy level. :D

Re: "Where is Wolcott? Invitational" 14th June

Yeah, those pulled pork sandwiches were great! Where else does Gus bring that barbecue trailer?

Oh yeah, and I'd like to apologize for our autonomous failure today- during our first practice match, for those who didn't see it, we ran full speed (about 20fps) into the player station... It caused a five or ten minute delay in play...:o What happened was, there was an encoder on one of our wheels that dictated when our robot would turn. We finally had gotten it working in New York City, but after that practice match, we found that the encoder had broken... Our best efforts all day couldn't fix the encoder(and of course, we forgot an extra one) so to save the field from any more damage, we just opted out of running autonomous. I still feel pretty bad about this, and I realize it must have caused the field crew a load of pain (apparently, it knocked over the field radios and sheared a connector...). So again, I just wanted to say, we're really sorry.

Still, the day was a bunch of fun. The awards were great, too. I guess I'll always be able to find Wolcott now!

Thanks to all the wonderful teams who came to compete. It was interesting to be on the other side for a change, and as co-announcer, it was great to get to see a different point of view of the competition and get a better look at all the teams during the matches (the robocoach station during Hartford and Atlanta made it hard to see everything.)

I am glad that we were finally able to host a great competition. It started 2 years ago with a little idea that a friend of mine and I had suggested to our mentors, and now we finally did it. It was so much fun, and even though I am graduating in a few days, I plan on coming back next year.

Thanks again to everyone who helped, and everyone who competed.

A definite thank you to everyone who attended the very first Where's Wolcott Invitational. Every volunteer, Gus for the food, Jack Kentfield for being a great Master of Ceremonies, the list could probably go on forever.

Thanks to everyone for their patience with our technical and carpet related difficulties. I've never used so much duct tape it my life! Everyone was really great and that made fixing things so much easier.

Congratulations to our very first champions! Birds of Prey, team 181, and Gaelhawks, team 230, you played some amazing matches out there!

Thanks to my fellow referees Tom, Tim, Dave, and head referee Mr. Ellis. We were all new at this, but we pulled together and it was a lot of fun.

All comments and suggestion are more than welcome. Who would be interesting in attending next year? ;)

As for knocking over the field radio, you're not alone. It happened when we attended an invitational in New Hampshire, and it was our fault for not ensuring it was secured properly. It got fixed, which is what matters, so no worries. :)

Well Billy answered your question, but I wanted to say thank you for not crowding us. Somehow most of our team members didn't understand that non-pit crew members standing around and asking questions didn't help to fix anything. But hey, now they'll remember that for next time.

I don't have my sheet anymore, but here's what I think it was (feel free to correct me if I am wrong):

1- 181, 230
2- 195, 1124
3- 558, 228
4- 1071, 237
5- 1735, 571
6- 173, 716

That was from me, not from Rob. Although I know that Mr Cormier was very pleased with the way things went, and you may actually hear from him soon.

The 1735, 571 alliance was number 5. If you just switch 1071, 237 alliance with that alliance, I think it works.

Ok, thanks. I was sure of all but 4 and 5. I just fixed my post.

The alliances, though already stated here, are also listed on the Spreadsheet that was running in the pits during the competition. It, along with the scores from every match, the finals brackets, and the winners, are available here.

Thanks for letting me MC your event. My top hat comes off to 1071 Team Max, your team did a great job with your event. I was very impressed with every aspect of the competition, the team did what was asked and every thing ran great. This was one of the best rookie events I have been to. I look forward to working with you next year. Here's to a bigger and successful 2009 Where is Wolcott Invitational 2.

Thanks to everyone who came to the first Where's Wolcott and made it an incredibly fun day. Thanks to team Max for allowing us to help with the food concessions. Max ran a very well organized and professional event. If you didn't make it this year, consider coming next year.

For those of you who didn't get enough BBQ, the team just found out that we have been accepted as a food vendor for the Woodstock Fair! :D
The fair is held in the Northeast corner of the state over the Labor Day weekend. We'll have an expanded BBQ menu. Pulled pork, beef brisquet, and chicken. We'll be set up in the secondary food area adjacent to the horse pulling arena. Stop by, have some delicious BBQ, and talk about the upcoming FIRST season.

We received a lot of great compliments on our food, thanks very much! A few people asked if we'd consider selling BBQ at other events, and we certainly would. If anyone is hosting an event, and might be interested, contact our team and we'll see what can be worked out. The mentor who owns the BBQ trailer is booked solid for most of the summer, but the fall has openings.

Again, a big Thanks to Team Max, and thanks for everyone's compliments on our food. :)
