Like Metal?

Re: Like Metal?
Who doesn't love the classics? Reign In Blood, Number of the Beast, Ride the Lightning, British Steel, Vulgar Display of Power? Yes, please.

I love melodic death, progressive, and thrash metal, as well as some sludge, doom, groove metal. Opeth, Lamb of God, [old] In Flames, Nevermore, [old] Metallica, Slayer, Children of Bodom, The Sword, Iron Maiden, Arch Enemy, At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Black Sabbath, The Haunted, etc. http://www.last.fm/user/Lil_Lavery/ |
Re: Like Metal?
very nice bands lavery. I'm gonna post my band list soon =]
|
Re: Like Metal?
I lof metal \m/
I'm into anything that isn't sound basically. I used to like In Flames, but they're just sound, IMO. Children of Bodom, Metallica (possibly the greatest band out there), Avenged Sevenfold, All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, Disturbed and many more... Classic rock and Punk rock are some genres I prefer as well, but not as much as metal. *plays air guitar to Fade to Black by Metallica* |
Re: Like Metal?
Im all about some Dragon Force and Ramstein.
|
Re: Like Metal?
I'm so pump! I'm going to a Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth concert in April, shortly followed by Children of Bodom and In Flames in May!

I love metal!
Last Tuesday I went to Taste of Chaos in Chicago. I fell in love with J-Rock (Japanese metal) that day. The lineup: Avenged Sevenfold Atreyu blessthefall Bullet for My Valentine Mucc IdiotPilot The Underneath D'espairsRay A7X puts on a terrible show... IMO, Bullet for My Valentine and Atreyu are 100X better. Blessthefall was amazing, also. D'espairsRay was my favorite, though. I was able to get front and center for Bullet, blessthefall, and Atreyu. I have the bruises to prove it... That railing did not have padding on it and I have a bruise between my man boobs and my stomach that runs all the way across my chest. It was amazing!! |

Re: Like Metal?
While I'm bored, my top 10 favorite metal albums:
10. Dreaming Neon Black - Nevermore Nevermore's most complete album, this concept album offers an unique and powerful blend of progressive, acoustic, and thrash sounds. Warrel Dane's vocals are spectacular, and Loomis pumps out some amazing solos. 9. Skydancer - Dark Tranquillity DT's first full album, and their only with Anders Friden still on vocals. This album was the heaviest of the Gothenburg bands, almost bordering on black metal in some aspects, but it's one of the key early Melodic Death metal albums. Amazing melodies drive the songs, and occasional female vocals provide contrast to the dark sounds. 8. Seasons in the Abyss - Slayer Slayer's fifth album is my favorite. Their heavy riffing thrash sound is re-united with dark lyrics and songs that explore communism, war, and Ed Gein. Their haunting vocals provide an excellent layer over the crunchy guitar work from Hanneman and King. 7. Slaughter of the Soul - At the Gates Along with the early work from In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates established the Gothenburg melodeath scene. Slaughter was their signature album, and one of the genre's classics. They worked the boundary between melodic death and thrash metal, creating a unique and powerful sound. 6. Paranoid - Black Sabbath Black Sabbath's second album, it is one of the iconic albums in not only metal, but all of rock. Sabbath's blend of blues and hard rock with distorted guitar work created the metal sound, and nothing epitomizes their sound better than this album. "War Pigs", "Iron Man", and "Paranoid" are all classics, and have been covered by just about everyone. 5. System of a Down - System of a Down While I'm not a huge fan of Nü Metal, this is an exception. Where KoЯn's Follow the Leader was the first pinnacle album of the sub-genre, SOAD's self-titled debut is the best of Nü metal. Every song is spectacular, with System's unique sound reverberating through-out. This is, by far, their heaviest and darkest album. 4. Ashes of the Wake - Lamb of God The breakthrough album for Lamb of God has proven to be their most durable to my listening habits. The crux of their development, it still carries themes from New American Gospel, but expands upon the direction suggested by As the Palaces Burn. The blending of the thrash, progressive, groove, and metalcore styles forms a sound that's never boring, with relentless riffs that keep you going from beginning to end. 3. Blackwater Park - Opeth Opeth's magnum opus, this is the symbol of their signature sound. It expanded on their previous release, Still Life, incorporating the blend of light and dark sounds, alternating between death metal riffs and softer acoustic passages. This blending of opposites forms one of the greatest progressive albums of all time. 2. Master of Puppets - Metallica The Cliff Burton years of Metallica peaked with this album, the legendary album that inspired generations of metal-heads to come. Battery opens strong, and the album doesn't relent afterwards, with brilliant riffs and solos in virtually every song. This is truly the finest of thrash. 1. Jester Race/Black Ash Inheritance - In Flames This is as close to a perfect album as it gets. Jester Race flows perfectly, balancing layered guitar tracks to form something beyond extraordinary. The instrumental tracks and acoustic sections balance well the hard melodies and themes. The Black Ash Inheritance EP adds more length and some extraordinary songs to the collection, including a live performance of Behind Space. There is literally only one moment (a specific scream) I don't like on the entire album. I'd suggest anyone to pick up any of these albums if you haven't already. |
Re: Like Metal?
This thread lacks Between the Buried and Me. And Protest the Hero.
If you want awesome, search 'Bloodmeat' without the quotes on YouTube. The original video is on there about 30 times. INCREDIBLE song off an incredible album, Fortress. |

Yeah man we will be there. Only two people on my team know about Protest though. But yeah I am always down for listenin to some good music in the hotel.
|
Re: Like Metal?
I'm the only one on my team that listens to Protest, but they're so good. So, Fortess, the general consensus so far is that Bloodmeat is the best track. Thoughts?

Re: Like Metal?
I am sitting here listening to music and I realize something. I want to hear more metal at the competitions. I am cool with poppy music and the techno music. But nothing would get me pumped up more than hearing some metal in the elims.

Re: Like Metal?
I live in Flint MI and we have this nice "little" venue called the Machine Shop and it always hosts some sweet metal bands...
My fav's are: Mushroomhead- they have one of the best live shows I have ever seen. They packed 3000= people in a building that is 75' x 150, totally insane Dope- Another great band to see live, not that much of a metal influence, but impressive non the less Devildriver- Are coming in April, i can't wait, already have my ticket, saw them last year at Ozzfest, one of the biggest pits i have ever seen, 100ft+ circle pit, totally nuts Ozzy- Who cares if he gets up there and forgets half the words to "Mama I'm Coming Home" still and amazing artist, the god father of metal \m/ As Blood Runs Black- Just started listening to them last year, have to say, amazing breakdowns and the drums leave you filling full-filled I Decay- Not many people know of them, they are an AMAZING band that is starting to hit it big, toured with Mushroomhead last year and have defiently left an impression on the metal scene here in MI Cacophonus Incantation- Another Metal that is rising its up the metal scene here in MI. Crazy insane guitars and AMAZING vocals from a kid that looks as though he got beat up everyday in Highschool. Going to be big soon, wait and see |

Re: Like Metal?
Man...I can't wait until I'm actually able to go to concerts...Oh well, I'll have to settle for YouTube instead for now...
Anyway, I'm not into the real heavy stuff yet, but I have a couple of bands I have interest in: Disturbed (I'm looking forward to their newest album, due in early June. It's supposed to be their heaviest album to date...look for the single Inside the Fire for a little taste of the album) Iron Maiden Metallica (Fade To Black was what got me into liking music at all, but I like all of their classics at this point, and even some the stuff from when they worked with the SF orchestra) SOAD Trivium (not all songs, but some like the MOP cover, and Anthem...) Shadows Fall And, my one of my latest favorites, Five Finger Death Punch (listen to White Knuckles, possibly one of the best songs they have) |
Re: Like Metal?

Music is a VERY amorphous thing. What you may think is "metal" I may not and visa versa. Careful what labels you put on stuff, because i've heard that robotics is "nerdy", "geeky" and "uncool," but i know they don't know what they are talking about. Not going to argue about it. I'm just going to prove them wrong ;-) |

This is what my Itunes said, not my opinion. It could be wrong. I agree with wilsonmw04, though its all kinda up to interpertation, though. I really like Evanaesance, especiallly the lead singer's voice. I was raised on rock and roll, a lot of classic stuff, and 80's rock, so it all kind of blends to me. I like rock, metal, punk, alternaive, death metal. That's why i listed those in particular.

Re: Like Metal?
Metal rulz! Just when they think its dead it comes back stronger...
I used to watch the Headbangers Ball ever week back when MTV was good. I'm more oldschool... Metallica, Sabbath, Rob Zombie, and yes even Mega Death. Of course I was in the KISS army back in the day :p I like my metal heavier, darker, but can listen to the thrash, speed, and jap stuff too. I actually like many different music genes except... disco and that rap crap. Nice to see not all of FIRST a bunch of YMCA'ers :D -p  |
Re: Like Metal?
Hey Sean, what are your thoughts on mathcore (I loathe to use this term, but it's simple)? I.E. Between the Buried and Me, Protest the Hero, The Dillinger Escape Plan, etc.
|
Re: Like Metal?
Quote:
Based on the name of the genre, it's most likely a hardcore version of "math rock", which is basically post-rock with more complicated time signatures and rhythms (often much more technical too). This makes sense, given that all the bands you listed I've also heard described as post-hardcore. |
Re: Like Metal?
Not to mention that CDDB or Itunes often places an artist in different genres for different albums. Most of the current "European Metal" bands are categorized under: goth metal, black metal, symphonic metal, folk metal, dark metal, etc.
|
Re: Like Metal?
Quote:
On a somewhat similar note, I fail to see why people even use the term 'post-hardcore'. The definition for the genre is incredibly vague and almost all encompassing for certain musical styles. On another somewhat related note, you've seriously heard those bands referred to as post-hardcore? Wow, that's terrible. The only one that, I'm pretty sure at least, even comes close to fitting that classification is Protest the Hero. But yes, links for those of you that don't know. Protest the Hero - Wretch The Dillinger Escape Plan's PureVolume page. Between the Buried and Me - Selkies: The Endless Obsession EDIT: I also must thank you, Sean. You've given me inspiration for the AP Comp paper I have to write. |
Re: Like Metal?
Anyone gonna to Mayhem Fest the lineup looks pretty sick.

Re: Like Metal?
Quote:
Hardcore (as well as post-hardcore and metalcore) are generic blanket terms, but I'm not really a huge fan of the genre. As a result I'm rather uneducated on the sub-genres and what differentiates them from one another. I wouldn't expect a metal outsider to be able to identify the differences between Doom and Sludge Metal, or tell me if a band is Melodic Death, Black, or Death Metal. As for post-hardcore, at least from an outsiders view, it seem an appropriate tag. While a little bit broad, especially when you count the off-shoot genres of emo/screamo, it has some merit. It describes hardcore bands which stray from the typically hardcore "rules". Break-strains aren't essential, much more experimentation exists, and there's very heavy use of dissonance (which is my biggest turn-off from the genre, I hate over-used dissonance). Most of these bands lack attributes to be really described as "progressive" (nor does the progressive tag frequently mix with the hardcore). Aspects of hardcore and punk still exist (namely in terms of the speed and vocal styles), but they are no longer binding rules that hold the genre together. If you want more insight I might have to talk to my roommate, he's a pretty big post-hardcore/emo/screamo fan. |
Re: Like Metal?
I agree with you, for the most part. You've really gotta know the intricacies of a genre to correctly classify something into the incredibly obscure subgenres.
Just a thought, though. Be careful about the use of emo/screamo. They've become incredibly generic terms due to the third wave of emo that started in the early-mid 90's. They've become quite encompassing, so the genre really doesn't have a specific sound or defining quality anymore. A lot of music elitists are almost offended at the usage of the term as a genre. To make this an analogy: post-hardcore is like that butcher down the street that specializes in certain meats, whereas emo/screamo is Wal-Mart. |

Whats in My Music at this moment... may change often without notice.
Drive By Truckers Johnny Cash Live Action Initial D Soundtrack Wangan Midnight Express Soundtrack #1 Crosby, Nash, Stills & Young Phillips, Craig, & Dean Kid Rock Rob Zombie On my bookcase, CD's, cassettes, & LP's... would take hours to list my 30+ years of collecting music I like at one time or another. |

Anyway, I would like to take this thread into a bit of a different direction; i.e., what made you get into metal? For me, I would have to say it was because of the mainstream music. I didn't have any like in music until middle school, and up until that point I had the mainstream music (rap, r&b, soft rock, alt, etc) shoved down my throat, so I found something different, which was metal...and I've liked it since. So, what made YOU like metal? |
Re: Like Metal?
I seriously thought that this was a thread about your favorite alloy of metal. But anyways I personally Titanium with aluminum in a close second.

Re: Like Metal?
Ok Metal Heads, I need some help. I was inspired by this thread to do some google searching. Apparently frequent searches for 12V motors and a few select key words made google think these guys were the best fit. So what does the Metal community think of 16Volt? Good Metal, or just some guys playing loud and screaming... even if it isn't good metal, it does have a catchy hook to it (first starts 1:24 into video).
Warning, they do one of those anouncers preaching for the first 40 seconds before they kick it into gear. |
