Winning 3 regionals in one year.
This amazing feat is mentioned time and time again. I'm getting conflicting messages about who's done it, so I wanted to clarify.
The ones I know about are: 47 in 1998 1114 in 2006, and 2008 1024 in 2008 1503 in 2006 (with 1114 all 3 times) Also of note, there was a thread a while back about the same alliances winning regionals year after year. I think 2007/08 Waterloo and GTR show the first example of the same two teams winning the same two regionals back to back years, with 1114 and 2056. |
Re: 3 regionals in one year.
Just back from Denver. Host mentioned that Denver was 1625 (Winnovation) 3rd Regional. They won. Looked at footage from Midwest and their alliance was the ONLY one to beat 1114 (even if only once). They were impressive consistantly racking up 16-20 in hybrid and 4+ hurdles per match.
Denver was our second. |
Re: 3 regionals in one year.
The title might be a bit misleading. However, from the content, it seems that 1075guy is talking about teams winning three regionals in one year, not merely competing in three.

Re: 3 regionals in one year.
The feat of winning three regionals in one year is an impressive one, especially with all the luck involved in winning an FRC event. That being said, I have a feeling the club is so small, because so few teams attend 3 regionals. For example, there's no doubt in my mind that Team 71 would have won 3 regionals in 2001 and 2002 if they had attended three. Other examples would be Team 254 in any of their dominant two regional victory seasons (2004 comes to mind), or Team 330 last year.

Re: 3 regionals in one year.
A few thoughts:
1) Team 1114 is amazing; watching them at the Midwest Regional, we thought they had a pretty perfect robot AND DRIVER. 2) At the end of qualifying at the Midwest Regional, 1114 and 1625 were ranked 2 and 3. The number 1 seed asked each of us to join in an alliance; we each refused, and so we were not able to draft each other. 3) We won one semifinal match by really blocking 1114 from moving much at all. I think otherwise, you just can't outscore them. That weekend, they had the highest single match score of ANY regional. 4) As far as going to three regionals: We only planned on going to two at the start of the season (Midwest and Wisconsin). We were seeded #2 at Midwest and #1 at Wisconsin, and fell to 1114 at Midwest and to our own mechanical plagues at Wisconsin. We had a team meeting, and spent about two hours discussing whether a third regional made economic, emotional, and time management sense. The team members voted to go for it as they felt we have a robot capable of competing in Atlanta, and we signed up for the Colorado Regional the next day. The team members' decision will necessitate some fund-raising, but their decision was vindicated. |
Re: 3 regionals in one year.
217 did three regionals this year, two they won, and GLR the third they made it to the finals. An outstanding feat.

And for those teams in that group, well done and it's amazing to see who is in there. |
Re: 3 regionals in one year.
I think there is room in FIRST for there to be very small to small groups that succeed in areas where others don't, continuing to raise the bar and show what can be done.
Succeeding in bringing home the gold in 3 regionals in one season is one such area. While the respected group is small, it serves as a group of teams that inspire and motivate the rest of us. Other small groups are made up of teams who have won the regional Chairman's multiple times, again serving as role models for sustaining excellence and commitment to the goals of FIRST. The WFAs are small but growing over time. The HoFs are small but growing over time. These are all small groups that inspire excellence, commitment, and reflect the different elements that combine to make FIRST. I know this is about 3 regional wins in one season but as usual, I started thinking about other things. :) |
Re: 3 regionals in one year.
1024 won three this year.

Could we get an additional list with all those teams that have gone to two regionals and won both this year? |

Winning 3 regionals is truely something. I don't think a team can win 3 regionals by luck, though my team did win both of our regionals this year as the second round pick. |
Re: 3 regionals in one year.
just my 2 cents, but wouldn't winning the championship event count for something?
I'd think that winning the championship would count as 2, 1 for the division and 1 for overall, any thoughts? Also, would off-season events count as well? IRI has to be at least as tough as any other regional... |

1114/2056 won IRI together too, for argument's sake... and theres not a shadow of a doubt in my mind that 2056 would rapidly add themselves to this list if they attend 3 regionals next year.

Re: 3 regionals in one year.
I've watched 1114 and 1024 on the Midwest Regional webcast and have seen 1024 in person at the Boilermaker Regional. Both robots are amazing with incredible combinations of arm innovation and speed. I'd hate to see them on the opposing side in Atlanta....

Re: 3 regionals in one year.
The Blue Alliance makes it pretty easy to see who has one 3, 2, or 1 regional this year (well, of the teams going to championship), on the championship divisions page: http://www.thebluealliance.net/champ.../divisions.php

Have the previous team to win three, won Atlanta afterwards? |

As for teams that could have won three regionals in the same year, in 2006 25 played in two regionals and swept the field not losing a match until championship, they would have certainly won a third regional (Instead they won the Newton Division and lost in the finals to 296-217-522). Team 245 won two regionals and made it to the finals in another in 2005, they beat some of the best teams and won the Archimedes division with 217. I am shocked that 217 couldn't pull it off this year, another team to do the 2 win one finalist thing, they will probably win a division this year. We will see if 1114 or 1024 can break the streak of winning three regionals and not winning championship. I think that 1114 will always have a shot to win three regionals every year, and that the 1114-2056 will win together for the next few years. |
