2008 Chief Delphi Web Hug

It's that time again. Time for everybody to come face to face and get out from behind those monitors, keyboards, and thousands of miles of Internet.

What: 2008 Chief Delphi Web Hug
When: Thursday, April 17, 2008 12:00 Noon
Where: Courtyard between Hall C and the Dome. (map; the big orange/black 47)
Who: You have a forum account? You're invited.

Mike Martus (from Chief Delphi) will give a quick hello, let people meet & greet, share some statistics and hand out some goodies. It shouldn't take too long (15-20 minutes). I most likely will not be able to make it (working a field for IFI) this year.

As in previous years, we will be having a raffle this year. It will work the same way as previous years. Starting at midnight, we will be giving away 15 raffle tickets each hour. You may get one this coming week, and one next week, for a total of two chances to win. You'll see the link show up top above the spotlight -- it will show for 1 minute (the 47th minute of each hour). We'll be picking the winners before the webhug, to save some time, but you must be present to win, and pick up your prize -- a limited edition 2008 web hug t-shirt (new design for 2008).

The ranges for getting your two raffle tickets are as follows:
4/1 - 4/7
4/8 - 4/14

1st Ticket: Vexplorer, Vexplorer Tank Tread Kit, Vexplorer Flashlight Kit, (donated by IFI)
1st-10th Tickets: Solidworks Thumb Drive, (donated by Solidworks)
2nd-5th Tickets: AndyMark Cap, (donated by AndyMark, Inc.)
6th-9th Tickets: AndyMark Backpack, (donated by AndyMark, Inc.)
1st-30th Tickets: Hexbug, (donated by IFI)
All Tickets: Solidworks Student Edition, (donated by Solidworks)
All Tickets: CD 2008 Webhug T-Shirt

People have mentioned that in the past they forgot about the webhug because Thursday is a very busy day. So, again like previous years, you can get a text message reminder. Go into your user cp, click Text Mesasge Reminders and set up your reminder.

If you don't know what the Web Hug is, and want to learn about previous years, see these links:

photos: webhug photos
info: 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001

Re: 2008 Chief Delphi Web Hug

Also, last year there was a mistake with the drawing where I accidentally included 2006 and 2007 tickets in there, so people who weren't there because they didn't get a ticket in 2007 were getting called. I'll make sure this doesn't happen again -- all tickets drawn will be from 2008. :)

I've also created a test event in the Text Message Reminders so you can see if the Webhug reminder will be sent properly. If any other events want a reminder set up, send me a private message.

Hi Brandon,
you say the ticket links will be available from midnight.... but who's midnight?

will the the links show for me when Israel's midnight comes up, or whatever timezone the server is in?

-Leav

p.s.

I think the "Send a message via Skype™ to Brandon Martus" is breaking the layout when you are online :)
(lazy web developer's solution - never logon to skype :) )

I wouldn't worry about it so much. tickets are available in between those dates every hour on the 47th min.so it doesn't matter that much who's midnight as long as you get one of the hundreds which are available between those dates

Yay! webhug! I missed the last years because I was busy involved in robotics. But this year I'm going down for fun! :D Even before my team won a regional. You mainly find me in the Autodesk booth. Come hug me if I forget!

Come to think of it; 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week = 24*7= 168 with 15 tickets available each hour, that total increases to 2520. multiple that by two for the second week and there is 5040 tickets actually available?

If this is correct, wow. If it's not correct feel free to correct me.

With all that in mind, Martus's what is the average amount of tickets actually awarded?

2006: 245 tickets to 141 people
2007: 267 tickets to 177 people

We usually give out 10-20 shirts .. I forget the exact number.

Last year they said to print it out and bring it with us...but we never did anything with them. Do we really need to print them out?

Sounds Great! I was lucky enough to win a shirt and a HEX BUG last year. Looking forward again to this year's hug.

Thanks very much to everyone involved with CD for all the hard work you do and the gifts you give out at the Web Hug!

It was a joke .. I've just had to fix an issue 2-3 times this past week, which is way out of the norm.

Basically, it's a little meeting where CD users gather and say hi in person, since many people only really talk on the forums or IM .. the webhug let's you put a face to a name.

After midnight, you can get your 2nd ticket (assuming you have 1 already).

Over 100 tickets have been given out this past week, so far.

I've never gone to one of these before, but since I'm graduating and likely won't be back at the championship anytime soon, I guessed it was time to see what it was all about... but I have a question...

I know there are no published schedules or anything, but is it believeable that I could make it to the web hug at noon even if I'm a driver?

Sounds like a good time!

The thumb drives don't contain SolidWorks -- I believe they are probably branded with the SolidWorks logo ..

However -- a SolidWorks rep. saw your question and they have generously donated 47 copies of SolidWorks (student edition) to be given out to all raffle winners!

Re: 2008 Chief Delphi Web Hug

Only two requirements to win - you must be a student and you must love to design in 3D!

We will make certain to bring the copies of SolidWorks with all COSMOS analysis tools for calculating stress and motion and flow simulation. Your robots are becoming very advanced and you need the same tools our customer use to design robots from VEXplorer to the Mars Rover.

We can only travel to a few Regionals during the season. It will be great to to meet you all in Atlanta. Marie

The answer is in the first post of the thread. We meet at noon, get greeted and regaled with statistics about Forum usage, then receive goodies. Expect to be back at work in the pits or finding some lunch by 12:30.

Thanks. I was just a bit confused because it said

We'll be picking the winners before the webhug, to save some time
Which lead me to believe it will be held significantly beforehand.

Re: 2008 Chief Delphi Web Hug

"Picking the winners" just means compiling the ordered list of names (and aliases) to be read at the Web Hug. The actual awarding of shirts etc. will definitely be done at the event.

Yep -- we just save some time and do the picking before hand, and make a list of winners. They won't be announced until the Web Hug, though. This saves us from lugging around a pile of (now) 200+ raffle tickets, along with a whole bunch of prizes.

See you all there, and good luck! :)

Wow, those are some awesome prizes. Thank you very much to IFI, Solidworks, AndyMark, and of course, Chief Dlephi, for the prizes and putting this awesoe event on. Can't wait for my first webhug!

Anyone have any pics from the webhug they want to throw here on CD?

It was a good time seeing everyone again for the limited amount of time I was able to spend out there before getting back to my volunteer position.

Re: 2008 Chief Delphi Web Hug

I was unfortunately unable to attend this year's webhug as matches on Curie were significantly behind schedule:mad: and I was still down on the field driving. Apparently if I had been able to make it in time I would have received a solidworks giftpack :( but I still got a sweet pin from one of my mentors that was able to attend. From what I heard, it was very good as usual, and I like the new tee-shirt designs that one of my team mates was sporting on our flight home today! :p

Schnabel 20-04-2008 21:41

Re: 2008 Chief Delphi Web Hug

For everyone who was there, and those that could not attend, I really embarrassed myself at the webhug, and I can't let this good of a story go. So Mike was about to call out the name for the last winner of the T-Shirts, I was getting a little nervous because I had yet to get one. The name was called "Eddie's son from team 45". Immediately I thought that I did not know of anyone from my team with that user name. I shouted out "There is no person with the name Eddie's Son on team 45." Mike shook his head and went ahead and called out the next name on the list. Congratulations, she was there and she got the last shirt. It was then that I started to realize, I was Eddie's Son! I turned to Michelle Celio and I was like "Michelle, I am Eddie's Son, and I just realized that!!!" I had completely forgotten that my AKA was in fact (and at this point still is) Eddie's son. Grr, I felt mad and sad at the same time because I was not expecting for them to call Eddie's Son, but instead my real user name Schnabel (sh-naw-ble). Anyways, I don't think I was in any pictures, but here is my story from the 2008 CD Webhug.

Re: 2008 Chief Delphi Web Hug

I was standing near you, and I heard you say "wait! I'M Eddie's son!" I almost lost it completely. Sorry you missed out on the shirt, but you have to admit it's a good story. And you DID win at the CD Webhug, you just declined to collect the prize...

Re: 2008 Chief Delphi Web Hug

Several people came and told me that I had won a HEXBUG. Woohoo!
But I lost the HEXBUG because I was a no show.

Sad, sad booboo face.

Crap... I missed the webhug again. I am truly sorry for not being able to attend. This year, I decided to be a referee, and there was a noon meeting among all of the refs.

It was great meeting everyone here from Chief Delphi, both at the Web Hug and over the course of the competition.

Also, thanks for the great prizes! (Luckily I was there when my name was called this year. ;-) The tee shirt, HEXBUG, and SolidWorks were great prizes.

It's always right next to the giant FIRST banner on the GWCC side. I'm not sure if that was explicitly expressed anywhere in the Web Hug information, but if it wasn't it should be added into the Web Hug information for next year.

Thanks again for this event and giving me a legitimate excuse for going out in the sunshine for a while :) , for the cool prizes, and for giving everyone a chance to say hi to each other (I always meet new-to-me people).

Most of all, many many thanks for allowing NEMO to have their forum on the site. We couldn't do it without you!

It soundds like the hug was another resounding success. Like Andy, I was unable to make it. I was scheduled to give an electrical seminar at noon. Hope everyone had a great time.

Sadly, I had to run over from a match and arrived a bit late. And a couple minutes after, I won something apparently, but I heard that my name was pronounced funky. :p Oh well.

Anyways, it was nice to see some of you even if not many. And to the others, I'll see you next year if I come back to mentor. ;)

So I think this is the 5th webhug I've been to and I finally won something! Persistence pays off!

I'm still convinced that no one knows how to say my last name though.

This was my first going to the webhug and it was great fun. I won twice but gave my second copy of Solidworks to Jeff and can't remember who I gave my other shirt too. Ill make sure to be there again next year.

How do you mispronounce Nica?

But as a consolation, my name was pronounced rather strangely too! But those around me thought that's how it was pronounced too, so when it was called they all turned and looked at me! For the record, it is Cyn as in Cynthia, -ette as in corvette.

So we're not up to 3/4 of a million posts yet eh? w00t!
Gotta put posting that 750,000th post on my to-do list. lol
I already had the 500,000th, so why not?

I realized it was after 12 noon when I was in the basement of the GA Dome under the seats of the Curie field unpacking trophies, & ran as fast as I could up those stairs & out to the courtyard and made it just in time to win a SolidWorks student version, SW Pin, and CD T-Shirt.
Thanks to all who came, and also to all the awesome people/companies who donated prizes!
Good times had by all! :)

Figures that I finally would have won something... if I had been able to escape from Field Reset on Newton.

Would it be possible to move the 2009 web hug till after matches are done for the day, or is it just me that finds it hard to get free from volunteering/competing to attend?

I was disappointed when I missed it because our flight out of Richmond was delayed by an hour. Maybe next time.
