looks like the wheels can be lowered incase the hovercraft part stopped working

I believe that I heard they made this all on Friday or Thursday. It worked well and sounded so cool!

That is by far one of the coolest things I have seen. Please post a video of it. It doesn't seem like 1626 is traveling to Atlanta. It would be cool to see this in person.

Thanks for liking our cart so much. Yes it is true that we started working on it on thursday at 3:00 and ended at around 9:00 that night.
I will try to post more pictures later this week. I'm trying to get all the pictures of it from my team and get the best ones.
If you were at NYC and came over to our pit on friday we were giving out rides to everyone. On sunday we even got Dean to ride on it!
If you have any questions about it let me know.

Awesomely cool!

A few questions: What did you use for providing lift (air source)? What did you make your skirt out of? How much weight can it hold? How much runtime do you get on a charge?

Again, Awesome! I wish we had one... it's a long haul to/from the field in atlanta. :o

This is the best cart I have seen to date.

Will you guys be putting out a white paper for other teams to try and built similaur carts or try to improve on this one, although I dought it could happen.

I would like to see some drawings with design specs of your cart if that's possable....Please.......:D

Again, this is the coolest cart I have ever seen, or could have thought of.

It won the Best Cart Award at NYC!

PMulvey 08-04-2008 09:46

Re: pic: Hovercraft cart

To answer some questions....
It is powered by two Ryobi leaf blowers.
The skirt is made out of some painters tarp we had laying around.
We havent actually tested how much weight it can hold but just from giving rides we figured at least 600 lbs...maybe more.
The runtime of the charge is probably about 20 min or so, maybe a bit longer then that.

Our plan is to make it better then it actually is, and we havent had any kind of drawings of it...but again, I'll post some pics later on tonight or this week.

Reminds me of one my son made for a science fair project in elementary school - it was awesome to glide on it while testing it out in our kitchen! :)

I hope they bring the best cart award to other regionals... 1626's cart is cooler than ours, but I think ours was the coolest at Waterloo, and GTR. Pic: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/31195

I've seen plenty of cool carts over the years, and ours was built on many of the principles we saw from other teams.

I was around it all weekend long.
It wasn't very loud at all (about as loud as a vacuum cleaner) another team had one of those boombox carts that made me wonder why it wasn't a low rider that bounced up and down on it's front wheels.

Now all we have to do is combine the boombox cart's boom with the hovercart's hover and add in a dash of signal processing wizardry (and a microphone) to cancel the noise from the hovercraft's leaf blowers. :D

...That and the addition of onboard thursters of some kind are all I can really think of to improve upon this design.

Great job guys!

sweet cart, if only you could combine your hovercraft with our componenets (2000 watt subwoofer, hybrid battery ect...) then you would have the perfect cart

check it out

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...&highlight=548

that + hovercraft=best cart ever

our hybrid battery could probably power your leaf blowers for the whole weekend on a charge

Re: pic: Hovercraft cart

We were going to put speakers on it but we only had like 6 hrs that we had to build it before we had to leave to go to NY. But we're workin on it for next year.

Just wait 'till WE get some decent batteries...

Hey, if it can lift 600lbs, maybe you could use it to move the crate around too.

Normally I sweep up the pit when the bot is on the field..but with that cart passing by twice an hour I didn't have to. Thanks 1626!

It doesnt hover off the floor very high...its just barely off the floor. Bumps are not very bad, the worst bump we ran into was that cover they put over all the wires going to the judges table.
It handles great. Its so easy to push the robot, the only difficult part is turns...you have to like drift around turns, which is kind of fun. :P

Haha yeah i was wondering about those because they are quite significant. We half took out the radio tower at philly trying to get over one of those with our cart:P

Yeah, I was wondering how well it would handle bumps as well. The only problem I could really see with this is how well it would handle inclines, like the ones in Atlanta between the pits and the field.

Otherwise, that's a pretty sweet cart. Kristian Calhoun and I built a hovercraft in 8th grade for a science project, and that was really fun to ride around on.

PMulvey 08-04-2008 22:25

Re: pic: Hovercraft cart

We are actually going to be running some tests on it tomorrow so I'll let you know about the incline. Any other tests you guys want me to try on it?

David Noll 08-04-2008 22:58

Re: pic: Hovercraft cart

That cart was great. It can support an amazing amount of weight (over 250 lbs) but the wheels are their because it can't get over that blue handicap ramp of doom, not that ANY cart gets over that thing well. Nice job guys, you and 421 should get together and conglomerate the fork lift and the hover cart...might be able to play next years game pretty well, lol.

Does it drift to one side if not evenly loaded?

Because I didn't say this earlier: The cart looks amazing, great work. Hopefully I can use this to convince my team to finally look into building that motorized one I've always wanted to build.

I don't have any experience using 80/20 Al, but do the fasteners on the bar holding the wheels that join the bar perpendicular to the frame of the cart have any trouble when you put that much of a load on them?

That would be Team 188. They also brought that hover-cart to the SoCal regional.

Now I think they're trying to ferry people to Rochester across Lake Ontario on a much larger version of their prototype
