2008 Championship Pit Map

FIRST has posted the pit map -- No team numbers---

Looks like we are in half the space as previous years, hopefully the pit spaces are the same as last year. New traffic pattern leaving the dome.

86 10x10 pit areas in each of the 4 divisions. That's a big scouting list!

Re: 2008 Championship Pit Map

The booth size is the same as before.

What is gone are the large open areas that existed before and the FTC/FLL areas are moved to building B.

What REALLY jumps out is the importance of doing the uncrating on Wednesday evening so the event can spend the night getting the crates out of the way.

I think there was one in the past as well...just it was located in a different part of the convention center...correct me if I'm wrong though. Heard that through someone else...I didn't actually see it.

Good for sponsorships :)

Re: 2008 Championship Pit Map

It looks like the overall event gained a bunch of new space, mostly in the FTC/FLL areas. The FRC area dumped all of the excessively open area but have retained the narrow 10 foot aisles.

new space
C-1 106,500 sq.ft.
B-1 89,500 sq.ft.
B-2 96,000 sq.ft.

old space
C-1 106,500 sq.ft.
C-2 106,000 sq.ft.

In the past it's been in the buildings on the upper level, across from the Philips Arena & open grassy area with the statues & what not.

Also in the past, it has been held at the same time, and they packed up & left on Saturdays. (We always saw the cars being loaded out into trailers in the courtyard on the lower level where the FIRST team picture banner is usually.)

Now that the events are in the same hall, I wonder if they'll have the two events completely blocked off from viewing what's going on across the boundary line.

It will be blocked off. There are these huge giant dividers that are on tracks so they can section off events.

Admission to the auto show is $ 10. It starts the last day of our event and runs all the next week.

$10 bucks isn't that bad.
I would pay that and hop in & out of the show and our pit area throughout the day.

Horray for multitasking! :D

The GM tent will be free so that is enough cars for me. It would be really cool if GM showed one of their concept cars in tent on the on Thursday/Friday before the show.

Depending on what day they decide to load the cars in we may be able to get a sneak peak of some of the cars that aren't "trailer queens" as they set-up the event and roll right by us either outside on the road, ot in the courtyards or access ways inside the venue (presumably Thursday or Friday or even both days).

If you think about it, space really isn't going to be too much different. We used to take only the back 2/3 across the entire building with VEX and FLL pits on the other 1/3. Now that they are no longer in with us, there really is no need to have the entire building if you think about it. Yes it is going to be more cramped, but not as bad as you think.

I really hope somebody remembers to scout the cars...

"How many ft/sec is your drivetrain?"

"Oh, so you do laps? What does your autonomous mode do? Parallel park? oh... well I suppose that'll be good for one line..." :o

Also... if I were out for a day at the auto show... why not spend the $10 instead on ice cream for the family and go see some robots? (provided of course you eat the ice cream before entering the pit area :] )

Does anyone know what National Instruments is going to demo at their booth?

Wow, I just noticed the intersection between public traffic and robot traffic lanes. Make sure you all leave early enough before your matches to allow time to move at a safe speed. I'm hoping for no robot/human collisions this year!

The robot lanes and pedestrian paths don't cross since the robot lanes are on a lower level than the pedestrian path...

The blue FRC robot path and the green FLL/FTC public traffic path would be on the same level. Crossing guard, anyone?

FLL/FTC traffic is marked in red, not green.

The public path, access to Hall B, is in green. That's the cross-traffic I meant.

Re: 2008 Championship Pit Map

Recent Dome/GWCC updates, from a volunteer conference call:
  • Some portions of the complex remain under construction and will be blocked off.
  • Dome repairs are essentially complete.
  • Most of Bldg C is complete
  • Parts of Bldg B are open, parts closed
  • Bldg A is closed.

There will be volunteers posted where paths cross (FRC vs FTC/FLL, FRC vs public access to Hall B, etc.) This will require cooperation, and may result in some small delays. Don't be working on your robot in the pits so long that you can't get to the field on time for your matches!

Hello, I'm from a rookie all-star team, so I've never been to Atlanta. I am curious how this usually works out... I heard it was a long walk from the pits to the arena.
And like DhavalP, I wonder when the team numbers will come out : )
How are we usually ordered? Will rookies be mixed up with the veterans?

I'm guessing you mean how are the teams organized within the division pit areas. As far as I know, they're random, so I'd guess you'd be mixed up with other people.

If you're on the drive team, it only takes a few minutes to get to the field floor... however, if you're not... yes it takes about 10~15 minutes to get to the stadium.

Oh... by the way... welcome to Archemedes. :D If you need anything or just want a bit of human contact, come on over to the pit with the big highlighter yellow 1024 over it, or any other of our fine teams.

AR-CHE-ME-DES! :D

Actually, unlike the regional pits, the teams are arranged in numerical order within the divisions at Atlanta. With 85+ teams in each division, hundreds of pit maps would be needed for scouts, judges, inspectors, drive teams, etc. That's not practical, so for convenience, the teams are not "randomized".

Perhaps rookie teams are at a slight disadvantage in this pit arrangement, but at this stage, they're not really "rookies" anymore. They've not only been to at least one regional, but they've proved themselves as good FIRST teams (regional winners or rookie all-stars).

The Archimedes field is at the far corner of the dome, and it takes several more minutes to get there from the entrance. In 2004 I consistently made the trip from stands to pits in just under fifteen minutes. If I waited for the score to be shown, the robot got back before I did.

The VIP hospitality area is on the level of the dome that is accessible front the road that runs between the CNN center and the Dome. Of course credentials are required. You'll see signs for the VIP entrance.

DS Falcon has been sponsoring the FIRST for a number of years I think. I know at least the 3 or 4.

Hope that helps.
