Ehhhh we really don't have one. But I have one of the freshmen thinking of one for Atlanta. I am sure I will be thinking of one on my 14 hour drive down there. 2 days until I leave. 3 days until everyone gets there. The anticipation is killing me. ha.

How many teams from Archimedes are going to the Braves game Fri night? If you aren't going to the game, what is your team going to do?

I have another question---what type of recording system do you use to record the video from the field? We usually bring a VCR, but it is a hassle to get the VCR set up with out a monitor--I don't know if it is on the correct channel, what speed the tape is set, etc.

I'm not up to date on digital recording devices. Some advice would be appreciated.

Re: Archi-medes!

Team 2424 is a rookie team from Bixby, OKlahoma. They are 1 of the 24 rookie teams we started here in Oklahoma.

Only 2 Okie Rookie teams are coming to the Championship. (the other team is 2352 Metal Meyham--they are in another division, and won the Rookie All Star award. 2352 is sponsored by the Chickasaw Nation (the same Native American Nation that Astronaut John Harrington is from) In fact, John was a part of our Regional Planning Committee, and spoke at our September Team Summitt, our Kickoff, and was a judge at our OKC regional.

Team 2424 Bixby Robotics is in the Archimedes Division. As all rookies are, they are feeling a little overwhelmed--but very excited. They have a Championship countdown on their website.

At the OKC and KC regionals, the veteran teams were placed on the ends of the aisles, and mixed in with the younger teams to provide guidance and help. It also helped the pit area to look more "balanced"--in other words, all the veterans weren't on one end of the pits with the cool pit displays, etc. When visitors/VIP walked thru the pit, it had an even distribution of veterans and rookies.

Whoever is near our rookie buddies 2424---they are great folks, get to know them, they are from a small town--look after them for us. We will check on them often too. The really neat thing about them, is that the kids wanted to do FIRST so badly, that they do most of the work. The teacher doesn't have to "herd" them at all--like many rookie teams. Their kids are really awesome--so like I said before--get to know them if you have the chance--they are really cool.

They had such an impact on their community that they were awarded the Engineering Inspiration award check out their website http://www.bixbyrobotics.org/

Even if they aren't near us I will still go and get to know them. I know that my teams rookie year we did not have many people that wanted to do things on the robot. And to hear that they want to do things is a great thing. And if they are cool people that's even better I love meeting cool new people. And I will have to thank them for the countdown I couldnt find one before =(.

Okay yeah and so we can't forget about the one lone Brazilian team 2575(White Hurricane) on Archimedes! (I think there are 2 more brazilian teams on the Curie division though) So I say we give them a nice FIRST welcome in Atlanta. Plus, I like them already cuz they are representing my home country and state what a combo, w00t.

Do to outstanding mentoring and awesome Gracious Professionalism--we can expect younger teams to be strong and look really good.

What used to take our teams 3 or 4 years to "get"---they "get it" their 1st year now!

(We had a short "intro to FIRST" meeting in June; an all day training session in September called "Team Summit" that included a variety of 45 min. workshops (the conferences at nationals were my idea a few years ago) so we do the same thing at home. Then we had a full day kit-bot build session on kickoff day. All 24 rookies left with rolling, functioning kit bot frames. And a better understanding of the kit components. Then they spent 6 weeks perfecting it! Now that is mentoring. We are planning on having an adult only mentor/teacher retreat in June to get to know each other, share best practices, and build the relationships between teams. We have a group called OKlahoma Robotics--and hospitality and gracious professionalism is expected and practiced among the adults!)

Not to mention how awesome the kit of parts has gotten. Rookies don't know how easy they have it!

Our 1st year (2000) we were like "HUH" about everything. We went to the Lone Star regional for our very first event--we didn't even know to bring a cart--we were carrying our bot everywhere! Then we decided to go to Nationals that year---we improved on a lot of things, raised $30,000 in a month, and won the National Rookie All Star.

But I'm telling you--the old way of looking at veterans first during scouting---we can't do that anymore. The young teams are looking GOOD!

Keep up the awesome mentoring!!

Keep sharing the scouting info too!

One of you techy youngsters needs to create a data base including a photo of the robots to put on our IPODS, PALMs, cell phones, lap tops etc ! That way when we click on our data, we can pull up a pic of the robot!

The competition here looks quite brutal, I'm curious to see how this will play out. We ceratinly have the coolest alliance name possibilities...

We leave in 2 days and 6 hours! (We're bussing it and taking a team building day on Wednesday)

Good luck to everyone, I want to see Archimedes take Einstein.

May you be referring to the blue allliance? They have an amazing database with match achives and records. Althought they don't have videos for all the regionals nor do they have pictures for all the robot. It's a still a great way to scout.

The hurdling itself is fast; however, in the matches I watched, they seemed to be taking it easy while driving and I think that'll make a huge difference on their performance when (not if) they get on Einstein.

Just wondering if that opinion is after watching CT Regional matches or something else. Our drivers have been practicing a lot since then and working on speed and fluidity in their movements. When we're on the field, I'm always yelling at them to go faster. (-: Thanks for the comment, though, I think you're on to something.

Here's a picture of the bot for reference:
http://uberbots.org/2008/media.php?m=658
Here's a top view of the gripper (it's folded in):
http://uberbots.org/2008/media.php?m=678
Here's a side view with the ball:
http://uberbots.org/2008/media.php?m=658

This is kind of complicated to explain without having the robot here to point to etc, so I'm sorry if it sounds convoluted:

We have an arm with four aluminum "fingers" coming out of it. Coming down perpendicular to the arm is a stationary tube with a pneumatic cylinder inside. From each finger there is a fiberglass driveway reflector coming out at an angle. This makes them want to stick out at an angle. However, we have a stationary cord that connects all of them together, pulling them towards each other. At each end of this cord, there is more cord that goes up into the stationary tube where they are connected to the cylinder. This completes the rounded shape of the reflectors. By using the cylinder, we can adjust the length of the cord to be longer or shorter- this makes the radius of the gripper larger or smaller. To pick up the ball, we open the gripper, place it over the ball, and then close it around it. The red thing is a piece of fabric which has elastic such that it is taut when it is holding a ball, but not floppy otherwise. It helps to maintain ball control, and in the event of the fiberglass snapping (which it hasn't yet in competition), it will hold it in and prevent entanglement/violation of the 80" rule.

the four reflector tubes are all connected together with a peice of wire, which is tightened/loosened by a pneumatic cylinder that is stationed in the static aluminum 'thumb'.

actuating the cylinder will sort of 'winch' the string, which will tighten the fingers over the ball into an iron, easily undone, grip.

Anyone else wanna trade some shirts?

NOTE: MORT UNIFORMS WILL NOT BE TRADED. I HAVE HAD MANY PEOPLE ASK ME. The uniforms are pretty expensive and each student buys their own because they last all 4 years and are personalized. One more day of school and then its on the plane for 14 hours! BTW, we are being filmed by an independent film company, Fleur De Lis films, for a documentary on the whole experience of FIRST. Its called "the superbowl of smarts". We are one of three teams they've been following this whole year. They've followed us home to interview the families and followed us in SVR with its controversial ending and in Honolulu. There's a chance that teams we partner with, and against, will end up in the final cut which they hope to release at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. One thing I wanted to throw out there based on the comments I've been seeing.

Remember when it comes to the Championship after alliance selection what really determines the winner in many ways is reliability.

Quick math for everyone to remind you:
7 qualifying matches
Min 6 divisional elim matches
Max 9 divisional elim matches
Min 4 Einstien matches for a Champ
Max 6 Einstien matches for a Champ

That means you have to run 17-22 matches to win the Championship.
10-15 of which are Saturday afternoon eliminations.

Just something to keep in mind when you select alliances.

Edit: IMO 2 of the Uberbots, High Rollers and Rush will be allied and win the division barring a mechanical/bad luck incident.
Uberbots were a hair away from Einstin last year so they can taste it and High Rollers and RUSh both Have Championship credentials.

They've followed us home to interview the families and followed us in SVR with its controversial ending and in Honolulu. There's a chance that teams we partner with, and against, will end up in the final cut which they hope to release at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009. Its been an awesome privilege to have this past year documented by a professional crew. You can catch a preview of their video from last year at: http://www.fleurdelisfilms.com/html/Welcome.html
I can't wait to see the final cut! Archimedes teams will be part of the final story so be prepared! Aloha

Kim Gibbs, the director and producer of the film, has worked at many of the regional and championship competitions over the past five years, and has seen a lot of the program from the event management side of things. Like many of us, she got bit by the "FIRST bug" at her very first FIRST event, has been working to get this film made to tell the world more about FIRST ever since. The film is a documentary of the experiences that the teams actually go through as they design and build their robots, compete, and come together as teams. To do this, the film crews are following Team 1868 (Space Cookies - Newton Division), Team 1583 (Rambotics - not attending Championship) and Team 2024 (Kekoa E Haaheo - Archimedes Division).

Most already know about the current PBS show that is also being filmed by Story House Productions this year. The "Superbowl OF Smarts" film should be a very complimentary piece that is going after a different audience. The PBS piece will be shown exclusively on PBS broadcast television, and the "Superbowl Of Smarts" film is targeted at theatrical release, to be shown at independent movie theatres and film festivals. Together they will reach a broader audience than either effort would alone, and help tell the "FIRST story" to a much larger portion of the public.

Team 116 and NASA are funding a bit chunk of the production as part of our outreach efforts. Based on some of the B-roll footage and very early cuts that I have seen so far, the film will do a lot to show off the talents and skills of all the participating teams. But more important, it should be a great tool to have when we are all trying to answer the question "so what is FIRST all about, anyway?"

W00t. Today was my last day of school. Now I just have to sit here til around four when my dad gets here to get the stuff we are taking down. I am really pretty excited for Atlanta. Our division this year seems like it has some of the coolest people in FIRST. I had two extra team shirts but two people claimed them already.

Thanks for the added info Dave! I forgot to mention the NASA support given to the film. I didn't know it involved your team as well - Mahalo! Kim, Ashley and the whole crew are great people who are dedicating so much of their lives to get this whole experience on film. Again, we feel honored to be selected as one of the three they're following. BTW, Kekoa O' Haaheo (or "Warrior Pride" as translated from Hawaiian into English) is team 2024 not 1583 as mentioned in Dave's post. I honestly believe they could have followed any three teams because everyone involved has a story to tell that is just as interesting as the next. Our story is we basically build our robot in the backyard shop of our one and only engineer mentor with a band saw and drill press on an Island in the middle of the Pacific with no industrial base. We only got our first Home Depot two years ago....man did it change our lives! In spite of the meager surroundings we've had great success on and, more importantly to me, off the field. Aloha

Hey! Team 223 in the curie division and are looking to align with a team from each division for scouting. With a small group like ours, it is difficult to scout in all four divisions.

Yeah I was watching the ones youtube and they look amazing, I had to scout 554 and they had a suction system that didn't work as planned. 1771's suction system is different from any I have seen and you can clearly see why they are so good.

It's probably how they have a custom designed sucking system

In a side note, if anyone has any little creatures from their team we may put them on our robot, if you look at our robot in our pit you will see little things like a chicken from 217 and a shark (forget where it came from) on our robot. You will need to contact me in order to do this though.

Did I read that right . . . 2 LAPS? Yikes! So you can get 8 lines in 15 seconds with time to spare? That is more than smokin' fast (believe me, I know how fast smokin' is :ahh: )

It definitely has a lot to do with our custom suction device. The funnel is 21" diameter and we use a modified shop vac impeller assembly run off of 2 fisher price motors. We hold the ball with over 400lb of force so there is no way we're ever losing a ball from our grasp.

That's why you shouldn't have those lists, then you won't be disappointed when you aren't with Moe (but hopefully you are). I like the completely random, "Oh we're with team X. That's cool."

lol, forgot that MORT shirts have names on them already. Mine will have Akash Rastogi on it and obviously we're the bright yellow and black.

Stogi, I don't need a name tag lol. I wear mine everyday on my head. In all seriousness if you can't find the black dude with the fro and the orange cape you may just wanna get your sight checked ;) Btw, I think my cape should have "TheFro" on the back but, I don't know yet.

Not sure how this is going to work but just curious how many people
are using the robo coach. Are you using standard remotes or heavily
modified ( lots of ir leds ). Since there are so many robots doing killer
autonomous it cold be an IR TRAFFIC JAM if everyone does it at once.

Anyone already have this happen? How did you resolve it?
