Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
You should do the same thing at IRI, i'm bringing a lap bot made for fun muahaha
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
Our robot only goes 10 fps. in high gear... Probably shouldn’t bother :(
I'm already envious of whoever wins that trophy. That thing looks about a bonjillion times more awesome than the FIRST trophies :D |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
I hate to be the one who brings rain on this (fast) parade, but I have a simple logistics issue.
Will teams who compete in this be able to pack their robots up afterwards if the pits are closing/closed? Just wondering. I think this is an awesome idea, and just want to be sure by participating in this, that teams are not jeapordizing other important things. (Like shipping their robots home) :) But I'm sure you thought of that already right? ;) |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge

Good question. The management at Show Ready Events and Sargent Productions are aware of this challenge. For the 4 teams invited to participate (and if they accept), their robot crates will be transported over to the FIRST Finale so that they can unload their robots to participate and then re-crate the robots once the race is finished. Then, the crates will be taken back to join the other crates to start their journey home. Who feels the need for speed? ... oh, and there is now a graphic on the performance wheel tread area. You'll have to stop by the AM booth to check this thing out. Did I mention that it spins? Andy B. |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
Well, I was reading your description and I was like...
"Ooh, chrom-y... yep, nice trophy, yep... IT SPINS??? :yikes: " then I saw Andy Baker as the poster... yep, figures. Leave it to a man who makes a living out of spinny things to make a trophy out of spinny things. :] Kidding aside, AWESOME trophy, Andy! Who knows? Maybe you all will deem our robot speedy enough to compete? Also, are you allowing autonomous modes to run the drag or does there have to be a human operator? I don't think anyone can drive our robot as well as RALFF... -q |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
*orders new sprockets from Andy for atlanta....
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
That is one sweet trophy
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
Beautiful trophy!
I've always wondered why they call us gearheads, now I know.... |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
WOW! any chance for a webcast of it/video capture please =]
anyhow, if i knew about this trophy, i would have designed a speedy robot just for that! |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
At 27 ft/s, I'd probably have to place my bet on Team 102, The Gearheads.
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
So Andy, how well do your omniwheels handle on asphalt at high speeds? :ahh:
I think FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge could double as "extreme product testing":D |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
How will you determine who's the fastest robot?
Also, what will the actual drag surface be? I imagine it's going to be on the road that runs through the park, but will they bring out carpet for it or will it be on the pavement? |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge

We can make more omni wheels. Quote:
I am pretty sure that we are running on the pavement, without carpet. There will be alliance stations out there, power for the OI's, and some Mode Switches to help start things equally. I can understand the concern for lack of carpet. If this is a problem for the invited teams, they can simply deny the invitation. This is simply a fun thing to do. Andy B. |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
I'm deffinitly going with the gearheads ftw on this one. team 102 has a robot our team affectionately named "Splungy," "Speedy," and "Speedy Gonzales."
Gearheads ftw:cool: |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
I'll bet on 968/254. I believe their top speed is around 20 fps. and with six motors it doesn't take long to reach that speed
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
Precision Guessworks Team 1646 would love to get a shot at that beautiful trophy but either way this race will be awesome and I hope to be present when it happens.

That is a very sweet lookin' trophy right there. We were thinking of making some trophies for our school LAN tournament, and I'm liking the stacked gears. I'll have to keep that in mind. |

Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
I have a feeling that this is going to come down to the same thing that wins real drag races, acceleration (and solid driving). I don't care what your bot is geared to run at, if mine can reach top speed faster I'll beat you there.
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
So, I'll take that as yes, you don't need an operator, you can run autonomous control of your robot?
-q |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
note to self, build fastest bot, with crazy acceleration for next year...
no seriously though, that is a really cool trophy |

Perhaps I should have worded that better, I didn't mean the radial acceleration of the wheels, I meant the linear acceleration of the robot/car as a whole. |

I wanna go fast. NASCAR fast.
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
Will these drag races be filmed?
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
Cool trophy and great idea. Sadly team 1098 did not quite make the championship. We tried to have a speed grudge match at the St Louis regional but couldn't get it together. I am glad you got this orginized.
Our bot has seen plenty of asphalt during testing. In fact the school parking lot was covered with salt from a early February ice storm, the first time we did high speed runs outside (we has to replace the drive chains because of all the salt) and it did chew up the tires pretty fast. Have fun, wish we could attend!!! We hope to attend IRI and will race anyone there. Andy |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
Awsome trophy! Just wondering, do all the gears and hat spin as one? or indevidual?
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge

As for filming... please bring you cameras. I don't know what to expect with regard to that. The Gear Head is now somewhere in Kentucky... on its way to Atlanta. Andy |
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
1629 "advertised" top speed is 29 ft/s but i haven't actualy seen it move at that speed during a match. Mosty due to lack of space but we will see at Champs
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
So, who won the drag race?
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
We need to know!!! WHO WON?
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
who won? just from the few matches I saw RUSH was pretty fast.
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
Better question: did it happen?
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
More then likely it did. 1646 was asked to attend but we did not attend the party so we were unable to attend.
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
Congrats to team 102 on winning the "Gear Head" trophy.
Course completed in 4.43 seconds. |

Pretty Pleeeease Andy can you consider doing it at IRI? :o -q |

Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
its would be cool but 102 gets to keep it for the year until next time at champ.
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
I'm quite suprised that I hadn't heard about this, at 19ft/s I would think that our robot would have been invited. What was the speed of the winner?
|
Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
I can not believe a video is not up yet! Especially with Dean running! WHAT!

Re: pic: "Gear Head" - trophy for FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge
seems like dean is starting to have a bit more fun now. Between joking around in speeches, being on Colbert numerous times, and this, it's showing more of a fun side of him.

There are plans to attend a few others such as Brunswick Eruption, Ramp Riot, August Adventure Sadly IRI is a bit too far for the team to travel... however if I had the robot and about 5 days of nothing to do, you could bet that robot would be out there  hehe |
