Great Plays of 2008

First of all, congratulations to teams 1114, 217, and 148 for winning the World Championships. But I'm sure there must have been some amazing plays throughout the regionals. Anyone want to share?

Qualification match 58 on Archimedes field team 1 the juggernaughts and the red allaince were down by about 13-14 points, team 11 MORT caps a red ball with 14 seconds left, while this is happining team 1 comes screaming around the corner looking for a last minute hurdle but their shot hits the inside of the overpass and bounces back toward them. The trackball came down and bounced off team 1 and up onto the overpass and stayed put for a cap in the last 7 seconds of the game. It was INSANE!!!!!:ahh: :yikes: :ahh:

my favorite has to be when in the Semi-Finals on Einstien when all of the Blue Alliance was disabled (67 - Tipped over, 16 - Drive Train not working, 348 - Piece of Tubing Stuck in Drive Train from another robot) and yet we still won the match!

I just watched that match on TBA and that was amazingly lucky. I don't think you could contribute that to anything but luck and a well timed hurdle. Definitely the coolest place I have seen this year.

Yeah, but i'd rather be lucky than good:D

Galileo qual match 69. 1717 is dominating when they go up for a hurdle with a minute or so left and something happens and they go over. Sideways. Across the track. They still won the match. It took two robots to clear a path around their robot.

This was not an intentional move.

Yeah. No doubt about it that was the most amazing thing I have seen all year. It didn't change the outcome of the match unfortunately...but still. Wow.

That is absolutely incredible. Better than the time 237 flipped 190 onto the bar in 2004.

At Boilermaker Quarter Match 1 or 2, I can't remember for sure. I think it was Quarter Match 2.

Wildstang 111 put a ball on the over pass at the end game, and Chaos 931 shot the ball from half court, it hit Wildstangs ball on the overpass, knocked it down, then 931's ball fell into the place where the 111 ball was. Then the buzzer went off.....the Boilermaker roof came off the house...what an AMAZING shot by 931!!!!

I was standing right behind Raul waiting in que, he turned around smiled, and said "They deserve that one".

Hey, we were in that match. Our alliance partner was about to mow their arm over, which would have been faster than what we did but I didn't want to break 1717's bot even though they weren't on our alliance. I ever so lovingly "convinced" our alliance partners to take some time and push on their drive train instead. Eh, we lost the match due to lost time and were no longer undefeated. To be honest I was just glad we were hurdling after the rocky season we've had. 1717 went on to be 2nd seed and made it to the Galileo finals after that.

I'm not positive, but I think it was Vegas where something similar happened. A shooter team went for a hurdle too early and the ball hit the ground before it got to the overpass. The ball proceded to bounce up underneath the overpass into a placed ball of the opposing alliance and knock it off. It was by far one of the luckiest accidents I saw this year.

How could you forget to mention 294 (and more importantly, alliance's) greatest play of the year?

Final Match 1 of San Diego, all within the last 3-5 seconds; 1717 places, 294 knocks and 968 hurdles for a 2 point win.

103 did the same thing to a ball 365 placed during a qualification match in Philadlephia. Best part was, 365's ball hadn't even had time to settle into the overpass before the Cybersonics shot it off as time expired. It was sweet.

At Championship during Archimedes Qualification match 100 (at 1:32), 190 parked in front of the Red Alliance overpass and positioned their crane in an attempt to stop the Red Alliance's shooters from hurdling. 66 shot around their arm twice times during the match, which was quite impressive. But 116 actually decided to shoot over their arm! It hit the very top of the arm on the way up, and rolled over both the arm and the overpass. It was quite impressive.

And while it wasn't technically "a play", how about the RUSH pit crew changing an entire transmission during a 6 minute time out, and still getting their machine back on the field during the eliminations in Detroit.

Team 537 during their first quarterfinal match in Wisconsin against the number 1 seed. They were trying to knock a trackball off the overpass and when they turned to drop their arm down they blocked team 1730's hurdle then as they were bringing their arm down 1 second later they blocked winovations hurdle. I was in que for the next match, it was amazing to see. The whole stadium was like ROOOAAAAAAAAARRRRRR!!!!! 537 still ended up losing but it was still just somthing amazing to see

That's the first amazing play that popped into my head. I think it was team 1425 trying a desperate last second placement (one of the last qualifications on Saturday). The ball came up short, bounced, and hit the blue ball on the way up, knocking it waaay off!

My other favorite play was also from Las Vegas; the awesome 4 hurdles of a flat trackball by team 39!

Watch the last 4 seconds of match 82 in the Archimedes Division. http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv...hp?eventid=185
1504 from 7 feet away raise the ball over the overpass, drive forward and knock the blue ball over the overpass and place the red on the overpass when the buzzers sounds. It was crazy 24 point swing in just one second.

Re: Great Plays of 2008

http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv...p?matchid=5334

we cap the ball on our overpass and before it even settles in 103 knocks it off and it hits us on its way down so we don't even get points for the hurdle.

http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv...p?matchid=9794

at the buzzer they let go of the ball and win the match by 2 points because of the herd.

Ironically, we actually did this too at FLR. When it happened, everyone went nuts! Here's the link (match #48)

Also, I thought when 1114 grabbed the ball out of 330's lower gripper during Galileo eliminations was a pretty cool play, as was there attempt to catch a teammate's hurdled ball.

My single favorite play of the year was when 217 actually took the trackball from our possession and hurdled it at Great Lakes. At first I was kind of freaking out that they might get tangled inside our robot but when it happened I thought it was just plain awesome to see.

Team X-Cats, 191, had a great place at the end of one of their matches. Unfortunately, the refs ruled that the robot was touching the ball when the buzzer sounded, but regardless, it was a great play!

Thank you for being sensitive of potential damage to our robot. Our fall was in absolutely no way intentional, but we do appreciate the way in which the other teams took it in stride, and continued to treat every robot and team with respect, especially in some of their most nerve-wracking moments. Thanks to your team's conscious efforts to avoid damage, or robot came up nearly intact.

What was amazing about this play was not that they placed the ball in the last seconds of the match... it was that they placed the ball several seconds after the end of the match .

Their robot had enough momentum to roll up to overpass; the roller-wheels had enough momentum to spit out the ball; after power was turned off the elevator lowered, for a flawless place!

Re: Great Plays of 2008

Well, 1114 several times I watched them catch balls out of the air (sometimes on the bounce after they'd just hurdled it), as well as once where they'd caught the ball off the 2nd overpass IN AUTONOMOUS. If they could have caught that ball reliably, they'd have been able to launch it and get it over the 1st overpass just before they get their 5th line.

Also, 188 had a similar incident to that of 191 in the elims at Waterloo, as did 2609 a match or two later. 2609 placed, backed up, the match ended, and their arm hit the ball on the way down when their robot got disabled (the ball WAS still settling)... the refs didnt take the points away (as they shouldn't have, but they initially acted like they were going to.)

If your talking Waterloo elims with the 2609 thing, yes they did take it away :( I was at the driver station beside them and watched the refs take the ball off, I was very dissapointed, but I don't think it matter, we were playing 1114 at the time, and 12 points wouldn't of mattered lol

There was a match where I think 39 shot a ball in the final seconds from the previous quadrant which knocked the ball out of 20's forks who were about to get a last second place. Its a little fuzzy, but I will find the newton video when they get posted.

Yeah that quarter final match was crazy... OUr drive team realized that we wouldnt have time to get back to our home zone so we aimed for the cross shot. Last few seconds of the match both us and opposing team team 71 fire and the trackballs collide in mid air. Descoring the hurdle. What are the odds?!?!?!

Very fun driving in those matches. :D

I was waiting to see video of this, and now that the Newton video is up, it's cooler than I remembered :)

In Newton QF 73, 102 comes out of the gate and crosses the first line by the time 111 gets the trackball down. 102 makes the turn and crosses the second line. As they prep for line 3, they over steer and start heading back towards the second line. In the nick of time, 111 drives up onto 102's bumper and escorts them across the third line, saving the penalty and tacking 8 points on to the hybrid score. Gotta love being at the right place at the right time.

How bout at midwest when UPS 1675 takes laps side by side with 1114 causing them to take the outside and slowing there lap times. After each hurdle 1675 knocked the ball away or pinned it, causing more delay. in the mean time 33 and 1781 hurdle like mad allowing us to win the match 62 86. 1114 only hurdled 6 times that match.

I think that statement more or less sums up how good 1114 really was this year. Most teams dream of hurdling 6 times in a match. The fact that teams are bragging that they held 1114 to 6 hurdles shows the incredibly high level they played at.

Not as great as some of these other plays but my team 612 has been able to make some decent crowd noise this year.

Both notable from match 76 on Galileo: http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv...?matchid=10316

At about 1:30 of the video (not the game clock) you'll see 612 pass the ball to team 217 in the open field. Then of course the last second shot at the end of the game.

That is exactly my point, with a team as good as 1114, holding them to 6 hurdles is a big deal, especially when it wins you the match. It was on the the 2 losses 1114 had at Midwest, It's a big deal to me weather you see it as one or not.

Trust me, I don't think anyone would see it as anything less than a big deal. If you tell people you did really well against 1114 this year, they are impressed. If you tell them that you beat 1114 in a match they exclaim, their jaw falls to the floor, their eyes open up about ten feet wide, and they do a back flip out of shear surprise.

The trackball came down and bounced off team 1 and up onto the overpass and stayed put for a cap in the last 7 seconds of the game. It was INSANE!!!!!:ahh: :yikes: :ahh:

lol, I have to say, that was the coolest thing I saw along with the place the juggernauts made for our alliance. I will love team 1 forever for that:cool: Hope to play with them and 71 again next year. Both teams are awesome and had awesome robots.

Wow, I just found this one.

Qualifications 26 on Curie

At about 1:40, 1477 gets hung up on the overpass, then free themselves. Right as they do that, 1592 hurdles and the balls lands on their arm. They go around the corner with two balls nearly tipping. They get the balls off and manage to hurdle.

My favorite play of the year was at Buckeye. 1024 had just hurdled and was going to pick the ball up, but 2228 was trying to knock it away. They didnt see eachother and both robots hit the ball at the exact same time. 1024 must have had more power because they knocked 2228 right over. It was one of my favorite plays ive ever seen.

ok ok ok, it was at the kansas city regional, and it was during a practice match, but it was just great. one of the teams, which i cannot remember at the moment, had built a slingshot type of shooter. there were a bunch of robots stuck in a corner, and you couldn't get around. the robot came up to the traffic jam (with very little time left) turned, and shot it over the divider, AND the overpass. not sure if the points counted but it was a pretty nice shot.
