Team Mottos and Slogans 2008 Edition
 

Saw an old thread from 05 and wanted to bring something like it back up. So, what is your team motto? How did it come about? What's the story behind it and does it really represent your team?

Ours has always been "FIRST we will be best, then we will be FIRST." Mind you, this was our school's motto before our own so I personally don't feel anything when I hear it.

Something that we continuously brought up in Atlanta was team culture and I think the motto should represent your team.
I want to make our new motto "Doing what we do, and moving forward." If you were at our team meetings, you would so understand its depth.

So, out of curiosity, I want to hear yours and the reasoning and depth behinds its words.

Our team motto this year was We Not Me.
It replaced a previous motto that no one really had an idea what it stood for called K.R.A.N.K. T.H.A.T.

1086 is Blue Cheese and I guess we've had two slogan's/mottos this year: "A Slice of FIRST" and "Stay Sharp." :D

Before I joined 665 our motto was Getting Impossible Results, due to the highly random nature of results that come from our robots, and a combination of inside jokes.

This year, two years after our switch to the team name MAYHEM (Making Absurd Yet Highly Engineered Machines), we changed our motto over to It Works... In Theory. That motto is kind of the story of our team, we design and everything should work well, but something always ends up getting botched in the execution. Or we just get some result that can't be predicted beforehand. So now when we talk about our ideas, we add the disclaimer, it works in theory.

TIMS doesn't show any official motto for 1618, but Capital Robotics more or less purloined The Standard Is Excellence, a phrase first seen around the school with the former principal whose name escapes me. (The school has moved away from it for the most part; as the USC student, I'm always the last to know.)

Within the team, several catchphrases have developed. Tell anyone in the shop to act like they've got some sense, and someone will invariably chime in with "What would your grandmother say?". The kids are still working on the Crank That Billfred (silently shaking one's head back and forth in disapproval), but I doubt that one will be lighting up YouTube anytime soon.

Precision Guessworks had the motto "Seeing red again" as we returned our team colors to red and black. Between the mentors we also had a motto of "Exceeding the minimum requirements."

Personally I liked the idea of saying "close catapault" in 08 when we launched the trackball (from the movie "The Sandlot") in addition to this motto

We voted on that motto two years ago before we needed to fill in the information for TIMS, continuing on the superman theme of our team. However, we think we've outgrown that motto as a team, and were looking to replace it. My suggestion, which I used as a campaign slogan when I ran for team president last spring, is "It's not just about building a robot, it's about building a team". I think that's what best represents our team at this point in our history.

That was on the side of HBR's (1747) robot as well. So we wanted to put "We drive it like a rental" on the back of ours.

Our motto on 467 has been "We Not Me" for some time now.
"We" don't have a problem with the X-Cats spreading that message as part of the "Us" that is FIRST.

There was a funny incident when one of our students was asked early in the season what our motto was and blurted out the following gem: "We Not Us!" We had a long, hearty laugh.

I don't really think we have a real team motto, but I'm pushing for us to start using this one I came up with a couple days ago.

Ours is "From the basement to beyond!!" It came about because we started off building in the school's basement, in this dingy room with no natural light. We were crammed in literally in a small corner of a storage area, surrounded by stuff like boxes of paper. Now we've made it at least part way to "beyond," as when we finished as a regional finalist in 2006 the school gave us a nice big room on the first floor with plenty of windows that's all ours!!

Ours is "We're Not just ODD... We're PRIME" comeing from our team nickname PRIME 329 which that comes from our Team number which is 2207 which is the 329 prime number.

Lol in regards to the member of the pink teams post I thought all Floridians were sufficiently scared of Canadians already. Anyway back on topic I am saying that 1251 is adopting this quote for 2008 "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.-Aristotle". One of the most appropriate quotes for a FIRST team I think.

This came about through our love of build season and the challenge and our strong need to win and exceed expectations.

This wasn't for our FIRST team but our BEST motto was: "Don't worry about it"

Seeing as I was president for my High Schools BEST team and it was held at my house I grew to hate this phrase...

Scenario:
After turning around I find that my "team members" had found my blowtorch, which I had hidden that they wouldn't use it, and had lit all the pine needles on my driveway on fire. I flip out, "what the #^*^#%@*^*@ is going on!!!!!?" :ahh:

The answer: "Don't worry about it"

Sorry, couldn't resist... Problem with FIRST is that it leaves you with the impression that you can do anything. Thing is, most of the time, the impression is right. :rolleyes:
