2009 Season Looking Forward
First off, thank you to all those who read and followed the Looking Forward threads in 2008. It was a blast, and should hopefully continue to be a blast again in the future. Congratulations to all the scrimmage, regional, division, and FIRST champions. Even in a year full of parity, we saw some of the most successful machines ever, including our first ever team to win five medals for robot performance (1114).
That being said, what can be improved about the Looking Forward threads for the 2009 season? What did you particularly like? What did you dislike? Are there any areas that need additional focus? Thanks for reading (and hopefully enjoying)! See you again in 2009, Looking Forward |
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
I really liked every part of the analysis, and i look forward to seeing it again next year. It was a really quick read gage of where your team currently lies and how your doing, it was also an honor being on your top 25 list for champs.
i don't really know what i'd ask you to change... |
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
I'm with Aren on this.
Now, can we get one for IRI?:) |
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
Offer a mailing list in conjunction with the threads on CD. I'd love to have those predictions in my inbox. Other than that, a thousand kudos, and keep up the good work!!!
|
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
I liked that you divided the regionals with huge font so that I could only read the regionals that I know about. Sorry, but it was a bit too wordy for me to read all of it. Not that I would make it shorter, I am just too lazy to read a lot that doesn't apply to me. One thing that I might change, would be to put a follow-up on the predictions stating where you were right and where you were wrong. Condensed of course. But I would find it interesting to see how accurate they are.
|
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
YES! YES! IRI! IRI!! that will be one insane prediction, i really wanna see what you'll say
|
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
I liked how Looking Forward didn't jinx 1114 by selecting them to win it all. Great move.

But on subject, I found all of Looking Forward's predictions and analysis interesting, to say the least. I thought it was amazing that such in depth analysis could be made by one group of people for most regionals plus every Championship division. I personally wouldn't change a thing and do things however you see fit. |
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
Next year, it would be great if you could cover every regional; I know you missed a few this year.
Perhaps you could do the whole dark horse and sleeper thing for each week, not just the championship? |
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
I came into this thread expecting predictions for the 2009 season...
One thing that may be interesting is if you included predictions for awards, if you have the resources it could be really interesting to see your predictions for design awards, or even chairmans. Maybe having them out a little sooner before each regional would be cool, but that's rather nit picky. Other than that I can't think of much that would work better, I liked the format and you generally fared pretty well with your predictions. I'm Looking Forward to next year ;) |

I thought the whole idea was great. It was helpful in that I got a list of teams to look out for beforehand with the extremely credible information you have rather than the hearsay I had. I don't think there's anything that really can be changed to make it much better besides getting better information. But that's a little harder to control...or is it? |
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
The Looking Forward analysis was awesome this year....I really think there needs to be more discussion like this. I was reading the Championship analysis out loud a few weeks ago and someone not familiar with FIRST overheard what I was saying and asked what sport I was reading about, which I think is an accomplishment. He was impressed with the depth of the analysis of all the teams, and thought it was a real sport, which is what FIRST needs to be seen as from the public point of view. Dean's homework this year of getting the message of FIRST to the public could really be accomplished by showing this kind of stuff to the public.
So, what if all of these Looking Forward posts were to find their way into the sports section of local newspapers? It could be a good move in that it really makes the general public more aware that robot competitions are actually sports. I mean, seriously, ESPN already airs poker tournaments and spelling bees as sports. The only hesitation I might have would be for FIRST to get lost in the mix with the other sports which have all of the trappings and negative aspects that FIRST is trying to avoid. But I think it would be a good thing. What do you think? Actually implementing this would be difficult obviously since the media decides what goes where and putting a robotics competition with other sports would be pretty unprecedented, but should this be a goal to strive for? |

A request, on behalf of those of all who witnessed QF 2-5 and Finals 4 in the same event at Palmetto: Get more ears and eyes trained on the South*! :P
Otherwise, I found the coverage highly enjoyable. Keep it rolling. *A little birdie reminded me that 148 was mentioned. I argue it doesn't count; everyone knows that Texas is its own country! |

Ditto on the email blasts.
All in all, it was awesome to be able to read these each week. Keep up the good work! (oh, and if you ever have an opening for a West Coaster, I'm always available...) |

Great job Looking Forward! I would like to see the AP Poll Top 25 start in Week 2 Look Back (with a Top 10).

Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
LF, you have done a great job in analyzing regional and championship events in FRC events. it would be nice to do the same for those FTC people, um i mean training another looking forward"...
i second the dark horse, sleeper, and lock theory for EACH regional, i know it would be a stretch, but i know you can do it. I would also suggest one more thing, im not sure if it has been mentioned, but i would LOVE to see a top 25 list for every weeks events. sort of like a AP poll and to see teams rise and fall. overall, you have done a great job, keep it up! |

Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
Thanks for all the great work this season, Looking Forward team. It made the season a whole lot more exciting with your expert analysis.
Will you be doing looking backs for Atlanta? I'd be interested in an IRI prediction too... though our team uses IRI to figure out new drive teams... so... we usually don't do so hot at IRI. :o Thanks again, -q |

Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
How about taking one more step (look) forward and turning it into a web page with photos and team spotlights. the insights and research that go into the predictions are awesome and could really benefit from some added color (literally and figuratively) to the presentation.
I was an avid reader and will continue to do so! Thank you for sharing with the community! This could develop into a FIRST magazine! |

Why not just make the Looking Forward franchise into an addendum of The Blue Alliance website? It already has pictures of robots, the match results from previous regionals, and all the name recognition. I don't know if it could be worked out with the admin's of TBA and the person/ squad behind LF, but I would think it could boost both TBA and LF. -Greg |

Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
I think that the looking forward posts were great. They were interesting and entertaining to read. Thank you very much for taking the time to study, watch, and follow every team and their progress and posting it here on delphi. I am looking forward to what next year may bring, and I can't wait. As always, I am ready for more FIRST.
P.S. Thanks for mentioning our team several times! :) |

Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
on the ESPN idea, i would rather see a Discovery Canada type setting, but with a panel of respected people giving "honest analysis" as it says in LF"s user title. i wouldn't be surprised is SOAP or someone else (111 with Midwest...) could pull something like this off
but thats for another thread in my opinion... |

Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
I agree! Some sort of video review of each week would be awesome! I would be willing to help with the editing process as well! I would love to have the video resources to put together a top 10 plays of the week!
If many people were willing to help out, Looking Foreward could become not only a very popular read, but a very popular watch as well! |
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
5 minute Top 10 Weekly Highlight Pack is FULL OF WIN... I love it.
At this point, it wouldn't be much harder than starting a thread out there every week on CD asking for the best plays. The hard part isn't even finding the best plays in a given week. The community is large and active enough to be able to have seen them all and quickly identify them. I'd expect us to be able to come up with a solid 20+ plays in literally a few minutes. Have a team harvest the footage from SOAP/TBA. What else would I love to see? A weekly running BCS style ranking of top 20 teams in all of FIRST. It has to be as illogical and controversial as the entire BCS formula/process though, or else it wouldn't be any fun! Win/Loss, OPR, strength of schedule factors, point differentials... and most importantly, polls from well-respected "writers" =) |
Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
Quote:
Agreed! That would be so fun to see! I'm almost willing to make a weekly highlights reel for this year and play catch up! If this is what can happen for next years Looking Foreward, LF please PM me so I can help out with it!! |

And of course, after all the controversy, we have to change the formula every year to take into account some special case that caused problems.. |

Anyway, we have two options for the weekly host/panel deal. Either get some people in one area to do it or have a high-quality webcam room. Maybe both. I dunno... |

anyway... I think having a whole top 20 ranking would be awesome. It sure would be a fun way to share everyone's thoughts on some of the best robots in all of FRC instead of talking about the best robots at a specific regional. |

Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
Well i have been absorbed into the new season, but looking forward to the looking forward "spot on" predictions.
One problem i see with looking forward doing this newscast/sportscenter style video each week, is that by having an anonymous person running the show, would that not make him a known person? Instead maybe it should be a independently run show with a small illusion to Looking Forward, having a portion of the show being about Looking Forwards accuracy, and if he/she agrees the top 25 teams and picks. Who ever really wants to undertake this project should look into its feasibility and find area correspondents, maybe that could help out, cover a couple of regionals. But it sounds like an awesome idea, i'd love to contribute. |

I think "Looking Forward" is waiting to see 71's robot. Come on 71! Your holding up the predictions!
Although it's safe to assume 71 will be back in championship form once again. |

Re: 2009 Season Looking Forward
My 2 cents says that LF's commentary was entertaining and accurate, even if sometimes creepy in a stalker-ish kind of way. No fear, but his/her minions must inhabit all corners of the world...
I have no suggestions for improvement, it's all good. Don |
