Chris Fultz wrote an excellent paper on holding an off-season event called "How to IRI." I believe it can be found at http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2076.

In a nutshell, there is NO rental fee for the field, however the host team is responsible for transportation and insurance fees. In the past, AndyMark has coordinated the shipping of it to/from the various off-season events. The "How to IRI" white paper is excellent and will go into more detail about holding an off-season event.

If you do procure an official field, I would strongly suggest that you have someone who is very familiar with setting up the field. It's not rocket science, but it will really speed things up if you have someone with experience available.

Re: Charger Robotics Invitational (CRI)

Other Changes/Clarifications

7.3.4.2 Match Play

<G19> LAP INDICATOR Use – There will be no LAP INDICATOR provided. Numbered flags will be used to score the robots.

<G22> Direction Of Traffic – ROBOTS must proceed around the TRACK in a counter-clockwise direction. Once a ROBOT has completely CROSSED a LANE MARKER or FINISH LINE, it shall not move in the clockwise direction in such a way as to completely RE-CROSS that line. A PENALTY will be assigned for each infraction.

<G33.1> Alliance Station Wall – During the HYBRID PERIOD, ROBOTS may not cause damage to the Alliance Station Walls for any reason. For example, high speed ramming into Alliance Station Walls will cause the offending team to receive one and only one warning. If further violations of this rule occurs a PENALTY will be assigned and the ROBOT may be disabled.

7.3.5.2 Robot Actions

<G42> Protection While HURDLING – Neither a ROBOT in the process of HURDLING, nor a TRACKBALL in its POSSESSION, shall be subjected to overt, blatant, or aggressive contact that interferes with the HURDLING attempt. Each incident will be PENALIZED. Bumping to signal to pass (see Rule <G38>) a HURDLING ROBOT is permitted if no passing lane is open (see Rule <G43>). Incidental contact while passing the HURDLING ROBOT or otherwise engaged in normal game play is permitted.

Yellow Intruder....hmmm.

So, 537 created a golden house-bot that runs around the field scoring for both teams and is shaped like the golden monkey from that 90's Nickelodeon TV show "Legends of the Hidden Temple"?

Oh, and does the golden monkey house bot also climb around on the overpass as if they were monkey bars, which count for hurdles?

Anyone else have any guesses?

Well, if only a few teams are coming would this mean 2 on 2 matches? If you throw in another Robot (25%) on a Yellow Alliance, you could get 125% if the Red and Blue alliances are both worth 50%. But who ever the intruder is... they should wear a yellow cape...^_^ we have a few...

For Clarification...the rule changes to G22 and G42 are COMPLETELY different to the hint. G22 and G42 were rules we saw called most often and felt that they were excessive and they should have..as DeepDark said..be written this way the first time.

Speaking as a member of Team537 who truly has no idea what the game change will be...it seems to me that the "yellow intruder" might be a yellow trackball that provides a multiplier..although the extra robot is an intriguing idea I had never thought of...2v2v1 or 2v2v2 would be interesting...we do have yellow flags for penalties that could be used to denote the bot..lol

GBilletdeaux930 08-05-2008 19:00

Re: Charger Robotics Invitational (CRI)

except if it goes 2v2... then lapbots (such as my team) would be completely useless against two hurdlers unless they took away one track ball

We're planning for the third alliance (of one) to drive their robot from the parking lot, into the venue (while being sprayed with yellow paint, the robot, not the driver), and intruding onto the competition field. We would prefer to have only those team drivers with highly physic powers in this role.

Or maybe not....

125% of an 8 point hurdle is 10 (unless I suck at math)

5th yellow track ball for 10 point hurdles? Seems the most logical to me, but then again thats prolly why it's wrong...

However, we could just increase the dimensions of the field by 125% to really exhaust the robot's batteries during the match!

There is a yellow path on the field and robots that follow it during hyrid mode will receive a multiplier of 125% of their total score.

Deep Dark 14-05-2008 19:34

Re: Charger Robotics Invitational (CRI)

You know, after thinking about it for a while, I'm not sure my initial prediction of the Golden-monkey-from-legends-of-the-hidden-temple-BOT was correct.

Anyone who watched the show while it was on might know why.

NO ONE could put the thing together correctly. The arm section would be by the head or something and they would have gotten so much farther in the temple had the golden monkey not delayed them.

So, I'm not sure that 537 could put one together in time for this event.

BUT!!! I did have another idea. The Golden Compass just came out on DVD and there was a mischievous little golden monkey in that movie also. But I couldn't think up anything exciting really for that. So instead I asked google about Yellow Intruders.

I got something about Rainbow War. At first I didn' think much about it. Then I read this:

"Once upon a time in a timeless place, there were three kingdoms. One blue, one red, and one gold. In the Blue kingdom, everything was blue, because blue was beautiful. And besides, everyone who was anyone loved blue! In the Red land, everything was red, because they trusted red, but were afraid of everything else. The Golden kingdom was dominated by yellow. Other colors were to be eliminated on sight. Blue and red were censored; covered up... thus yellow reigned supreme."

So...hmm.... This could mean so many things.... So does the rest of wikipedia but I dont have time to sit and quote the whole thing...

Deep Dark 14-05-2008 20:10

Re: Charger Robotics Invitational (CRI)

More from Rainbow War that might actually have something to do with the game:

"In the Golden kingdom, a young boy creates a flying golden ring, large enough to carry a man. Using it, he leaves the Golden kingdom to explore the other lands."

Okay, so maybe that means that there's a golden ring that is on the field. It's approximate dimension "large enough to carry a man" could easilly mean that it is big enough to slip over a ball. Perhaps the ring starts on the field and teams must slide it over their ball? and the "explore other lands" references hurdling or moving the ball out of bounds?

"After he has seen enough of the Blue kingdom, the Yellow boy lands in the Red kingdom, and falls in love with the Red princess, and she with him. He gives her his golden scarf, and in return, she gives him a red flower. When the Red guards see this yellow intruder, they attempt to detain him, but he escapes on his golden ring, and heads back to the Golden kingdom."

okay, so this could be a hurdle from the blue side to the red side. The red princess could be a red robot. and golden scarf could be a special flag that is stuck onto a robot, making that robot's laps worth 125% more? The red guard could also refer to a red robot attempting to trap the yellow ball or yellow ringed ball against a wall. But "he escapes on his golden ring and heads back to the golden kingdom" suggests there's a yellow zone and that the yellow ball or yellow ringed ball cant be trapped like that.

A lot to think about... Anyone else have any ideas?

"timeless place" could mean that autonomous mode doesnt stop until all robots stop. meaning that if you had great code, you could do laps until your battery ran out, gaining super points. or, it could mean that the matches themselves have no specific time limit, which i doubt. maybe it could mean that we're all so focused on our robots that time flys by without us knowing.

three kingdoms could be three zones...they mention one blue, one red, and one gold. gold might be in the middle, or perhaps there are three lanes instead of two. This could mean that robots would have to drive in a figure eight pattern, crossing each other and passing in the yellow zone twice for each lap!

"In the blue land, everything was blue" could mean that scores in the blue only count for blue. For example, a capped red ball in the blue zone would give points to the blue instead of red. "In the red land, everything was red" implies the same thing.
"The golden kingdom was dominated by yellow, other colors were eliminated on sight. Blue and red were covered up, and yellow ranked supreme". That passage could mean that in the yellow zone, only yellow counts. the eliminated on sight part could also mean that red and blue balls cant pass through that zone, or they are removed from the field.

All speculation, of course, to get you guys thinking. What are your thoughts?

BTW, I do know the game. (I'm still a mentor and was on 537 as a student)

Teams 537, 1675, and 930 won CRI

The compitition was really fun. I like the game change they made it was pretty awsome. I kinda liked havin only 8 teams there, less to concentrate on scouting lol. Team 930 would like to thank 537 and 1675 for allowing us to join their alliance in the finals.

Re: Charger Robotics Invitational (CRI)

Wow what a weekend! Thanks to 537 for putting on an excellent event. I only hope that word spreads and this event is bigger next year. It was a shame that only 8 teams made it, but we all had a blast and everyone got to know everyone a lot better. That field seems to much larger with 2v2 matches, but I'm glad the finals were 3v3. The yellow ball was a really nice touch to the game and kept the game interesting. Best part of the weekend? The Human Overdrive games - I hope someone posts some video of that soon! I'm still wheezing 9 hours later...

Thanks to 537 for picking us and to 930 for joining us in the finals. It was a fun day, though I'm still sad that 930 and we were unable to reach 20 laps...16 was our highest. Congrats to 2194, 1259, and 1103 on their finals appearance, and 2506 and 1091 for a great showing the entire weekend.

I had a blast at CRI this weekend. Even with only 8 teams, the level of competition was still exciting and all of the staff at the event did a wonderful job. I had a blast reffing the event and can only hope that the competition gets bigger next year. Thanks to all volunteers at the event and congratulations to 537, 1675, and 930 on the win. You were very impressive.

Thank you for the awesome match 930 and 537! It was a blast, I can't wait to go next year. Thank you for the Yellow Balls and thank you 1103 for replacing our punctured Red ball.

I'm kinda sad the Rainbow War had nothing to do with the event.... but I LOVED the Human player games! Can we have that next year please? It was awesome. The "One Ball, Two Ball, Red Ball, Blue Ball" T-shirts were amazing and Chargers, you guys did an excellent job running the event and making sure everyone was having a great time.

Thank you so much for the great time!

Thank you to everyone in attendance. Volunteers we couldn't have done it without you and teams you guys helped make it fun. I think all around everyone had a good time. This was the first time we have run this event but we plan on making it bigger and better. In the future, we hope to host this event later (June-ish) and have as many as 32 teams. We intend to run a pre-season and post-season event from now on.

bfvaneyck 19-05-2008 16:29

Re: Charger Robotics Invitational (CRI)

So, for those of you that weren't at CRI, Here's what the game hint meant:

"Beware the yellow intruder bringing a 125% solution."

The yellow intruder was a 40" fuzzy yellow tennis ball that was released from above the alliance station that won the hybrid period. The ball was released 30 seconds into the driver control period which provided a 25% increase in the number of trackballs on the field.

Wasn't that obvious from the hint?

The ball drop was angled slightly to pretty much make the ball roll over the alliance's finish line on it's own. It was eligible for immediate scoring. The ball scored double, but could be used by either alliance. When placed, it scored a 12 point bonus, but the bonus went to the alliance associated with the overpass it was placed on. In other words, if one alliance was dominating the score, they could place the yellow ball on their opponents overpass to increase their QP score.

GBilletdeaux930 19-05-2008 16:33

Re: Charger Robotics Invitational (CRI)

To all of the 1st annual CRI teams,

I thank you all for your participation in this event! Without you, we couldn't have made it into such a fun time!!

Remember, you all are the founding teams for this event! Maybe a founders display for you in the future? Who knows, it just might happen.

Let's hope that in the future years we'll be able to grow it into one of the premier post-season invitational events.

I hope that you had a good experience during this event, and I we expect to increase the participation in this next year! We were somewhat limited in our scheduling this time because of our gym renovation work occurring over the summer.

Even though I'm exhausted at this point, I still have a very good feeling about this event....

In the future, we'll try to provide some innovative changes to the standard FIRST game as well as provide a good time for all (more human robot sessions?).

Thanks again,

No, I'm talking about the human player matches, as in which team members were against each other *If I've made a mistake on which team is which please PM me and I'll fix it!* , but I do have the finals on video as well. I have two more videos to go but you can find them at:

http://www.youtube.com/user/Team1675

It's taking a while to get everything up but I'm pretty sure everything will be up by Saturday. Then I'll see if I can put up the matches.

All,

I just had a chance to watch the human player matches on YouTube. They were great! Thanks for posting them. I had a great time at CRI, I hope you all did too! We'll try to make it bigger and better next year. And now, the hint for next year's event:

The slippery slope will be the downfall for big bertha.

Bruce Van Eyck (CRTA)

Oh, wait. Do we even know what next year's game is yet? Hmmm... The above clue may need some tweaking.

Shouldn't there be 24 teams so that there is a full alliance selection? I guess that's a little optimistic.

Anyhow, if my team's not going I'll certainly be going to watch (or volunteer if you need one); I'll talk to our team about it. Personally I wanna show Wisconsin what we're made of now that we have a much more functional robot.

Lunacy Human Player Challenge anyone?

Re: Charger Robotics Invitational (CRI)

Since it's only a one day event this year, we're trying to only use our main pit area to reduce the setup/tear down time. We can only fit 19 teams in the main pit. Setting up the aux pit area takes quite awhile, but would allow us 30 teams total. We'll probably do 2vs2 for qualifications and then 3vs3 for finals.

Wave Robotics will be sending payment soon. Any word on how many teams you have?

Re: Charger Robotics Invitational (CRI)

I can tentatively say we'll probably maybe be there, I think. Shouldn't be too hard, it's conveniently right before IRI and conveniently within jumping distance of our shop.

Once more teams sign up I'll make predictions ^_^ (hint it involves 2826 going undefeated again)
