Mission Mayhem 2008
Hello Teams,
First off all, congratulations on another amazing FIRST season. As teams are getting ready to participate in offseason projects and competitions; we invite you to come join us at Mission Mayhem 2008. It's a great opportunity for new members to get a taste of a FIRST competition is like; also let your new drive team get some practice in. This offseason will have a full FIRST field which will take place on September 26th and 27th of 2008. September 26th will be more of a practice day where the committee and volunteers will start putting together the field during the day. Teams are more than welcome to come and help and afterwards some practice matches will be ran. September 27th is when we will have qualifying matches and elimination matches. - Mission Mayhem will be taking place at Stranahan High School (Ft. Lauderdale, Florida); home of the Platinum Dragons; Team 1345. - Registration fee is $300. - There is a tentative social planned for Friday night for all the teams, volunteers participating as well. - If any teams have a practice robot that a pre-rookie team can borrow, it will be much appreciated. - Please email me at Arefin.bari@gmail.com to pre-register your team. Pre-registration is open until May 25th. An invoice will be sent out to you later on for payments. You can also pre-register your team by going to www.missionmayhem.org (Team Registration tab). Hotel information, Agenda, Restaurants, Awards pages will be updated in the next week. - Just like every year, here is a little contest for all the teams out there. There are many engineers, teachers, mentors, and parents who spend a lot of time with your team. They inspire you everyday and motivate you to be the best. This year at Mission Mayhem, we will recognize one mentor for his/her commitment to the team which will be called the “Mission Mayhem Mentor Award.” I would like to also extend this offer out to all the teams who participates in FIRST; even if you are not attending Mission Mayhem. We will have a submission page on the website, where you can enter your submission. - If you would like to volunteer for the event, please fill out the form on the website and we will get in touch with you soon. Thank you to the hosting teams (team 1251 and team 1345). I hope to see you all soon. |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
i already booked my free tickets to Ft. Lauderdale last week for that weekend
(i love Spirit Air, it's great when you combine their sales to get free airfare for every weekend over 4 months :D!!!!! ) edit: Arefin, if you need any help with hotels, let me know, i work for choice hotels therefore i can try getting some discounts for teams. also i can do the same with cheap airfare, ie under $40 round trip from Tampa or Orlando to FLL (i paid $33 for round trip tix to championships from Orlando :D!!!!!) |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
I hope I can make it out to Mission Mayhem again- thanks for placing it on the weekend after my birthday! I really want to go, but my family may decide to overrule that. They're allowed- I'm only going to turn 17 once.
If I do make it, I expect a wicked awesome party from all those crazy Florida FIRSTers! :P |

Arefin, has there been any word on who is going to be the head ref / any rule changes for this year? So excited for another year of mayhem :) -Tim I swear if that ends up on the webiste again this year, you're getting wet :P - |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Sorry we can't make it down Arefin, like I said before maybe next year. Thanks for the invite though:)

Mission Mayhem is a great event; hopefully MARS will have met the challenges facing it (loss of its teacher, workspace, founding members) and be able to join in. Hopefully some robot performance issues will be corrected too! |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
I would love to come back and volunteer again.
I'll even make sure to fly into the right airport and stay in the right city this time!:o |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Considering I'll have nothing else to do except sit around in Boca doing hw that weekend why not. Let's have Mayhem and we really need to stop this indoor stuff or change the name becuase it's not Mayhem when it's inside j/k. Thank you to Stranahan H.S. for letting us have the event their again. It will be fun to see everyone and help get my new drive team together. About time we got a thread about Mayhem 2008.
LETS GET THIS MAYHEM STARTED !!!!!!! -Drewskies (only south Fl firsters know about that nickname) |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
i don't think PINK has ever missed one of these events and we're not going to start this year! 233 will be there!
|
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Team 79 will definitely be there as well. Thanks for picking up the ball and running with it Arefin!!!

Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Team 744 can't wait to compete at Mission Mayhem again!

Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
The teams that have registered so far:
79 108 168 179 233 744 1251 1251 rookie 1345 1345 rookie 1649 1889 (Gary, I just heard a news, we need to talk) 1902 2023 2383 Still waiting to hear from teams. I understand that schools are in the middle of AP/IB/Final exams. Yes Michelle, there will be some rule changes. As for the head ref, I have few people in my mind. I have yet to speak to them about it. As far as website goes, the website will be updated next Tuesday (according to Tim). We will post a tentetive agena and add another tab where you can nominate your mentors. Every team is required to submit an essay. Your team is also more than welcome to submit more than one essay. I have been getting a lot of feedback as far as volunteers go. I have a lot of volunteers that have signed up already. Please go to the site and sign up to volunteer. Here is a contest to keep everyone (that is whoever is willing) busy during offseason. We need a trophy design done. What we would like is a design that relates to FIRST Overdrive 2008 and very easy to manufacter. You can either email the design to me (arefin.bari@gmail.com) or post it here. Also while you guys are at it, please design a shirt for us? I would be greatful if someone is willing to step up. The logo for Mayhem will be the same one as last year (Koko Ed's design). We are open to creative designs (but please make sure you don't break the FIRST logo rules). Please email all the submissions or post it here. Thanks to the Chiefdelphi community who has been very supportive over the years. |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Hmmm... maybe maybe.
Why not add one more to my list of competitions attended this year? |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008

Hold on to your hats folks, -Drew |

Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
All the teams that have registered for Mission Mayhem 2008 should have received an email from me. Important updates and payment information were included in that email. If you are a main contact and haven't received an email from me, please send me a message.
We are asking all local teams to be in attendance on Friday (September 26th) for setup. The field will arrive at Stranahan High School at 7:00 a.m. We will start setting up right away and it should be all done by noon. There will be practice matches from 12:00 p.m. till 4:00 p.m. followed by a Mayhem Social at DeVry University's campus. Teams who are traveling out of town are more than welcome to join us. It is mandatory that all teams that are attending mayhem submit their mentors for the Mayhem Mentor Award. Please direct your students to www.missionmayhem.org under the "Mentor Award" tab. We also encourage students from other teams in FIRST to submit an essay (yes, that means if you are a student and you are reading this, you should submit your mentor). There will be a webcast for this event. Webcast info will be published the week of Mayhem. I hope to see you all there. =) |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Registration for voluenteers is also up on the website. Special thanks to Tim Arnold for that one as usual and I'm sure many others have contributed. Speaking of voluenteers is there a date when the list will be finalized and we will recieve a job placement email? I was just wondering.
Thanks, Drew |

So far we have the following teams registered and still waiting for few teams to register. 79 108 168 179 233 408 744 1251 1251 rookie 1345 1649 1841 1889 1902 2023 2383 Teams, please bear with me since we have a whole new committee of people working on this off-season unlike the other years. I know I have been very bad about sending out detailed information about the event. The website should have everything (well almost everything) by the end of the weekend. |

1557 might be able to go we may not have the resources to do it
i used to live in ft. Lauderdale i wonder how much its changed since 1999? Stranahan high school ? how is that close to nova or far away? water shortage? when did that happen? |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Attention Arefin and all Mission Mayhem staff/volunteers,
The Earth's axis must have shifted or some cosmic karma has changed, otherwise Mission Mayhem would be happening this week during the onslaught from Tropical Storm Fay. Oh... I forgot, its held indoors now. Since Mother Nature couldn't reek mayhem sufficiently last year and probably won't this year on 9/26 & 9/27, I think Fay is revenge. Hopefully this weekend's Robot Rodeo will avoid Fay's wraith. Edit:Too late; just got an email that it is resheduled to 11/8/08 due to the weather. Gorilla, the water shortage mentioned in earlier posts was in the spring...now, not so much! :yikes: |

Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
This thread is much much much too quiet for the mayhem that's coming up in a few days. Arefin must be pretty busy kicking it into overdrive.
Can't wait to see photos posted of the event, the teams, the awards, and the trophies! Good luck all, have a great time! |

Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Sorry I have been slacking on posting information here. The website has been updated. Final team list, maps/direction, agenda, addresses, list of awards etc can be found on the website (www.missionmayhem.org).
We have received some phenomenal essays for the Mentor Award and looking forward to receiving more. Deadline for all the submissions are Friday at Noon. Please nominate your mentors. There is no limit to how many mentors you can nominate. Mission Mayhem 2008 will be webcasted on Saturday. Please check this thread for the link. All the matches and awards from the event will also be up on SOAP and The Blue Alliance. George Wallace is back again for another year as the game announcer. I am very excited to work with him again. I am sure he would want some phrases he can include while he is announcing. Please check this thread on Saturday. I need to go finish more stuff for Mayhem. If you have any questions or comments, please post it here and I will respond back. |

Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Sadly, it doesn't look like I am going to make it down to cheer on my teams.
For those who haven't heard, I am moving to Huntsville Alabama next week. I have about 1000 things to do before the move, and I think I'm on number 14 so I can't fit Mayhem into my schedule. I am flying up October 1st to start work and will be back in a few weeks after the movers come to drive up with my wife - that happens to be the weekend of TNT which I will sadly miss as well. We've been planning this for a while but it fell into place rather suddenly - I got the job offer at the beginning of August - so we are looking forward to it. I've already contacted Ed Sparks about Alabama FIRST - looking forward to working with him again. I will be working on a really cool project (one I can actually talk about for a change) which basically involves designing a REALLY BIG robot that we will produce in a quantity of about 30,000 per year. Ask me about it when you see me. To my friends in South Florida (and Arefin :)) - I will miss you and look forward to seeing you all at the championship. Gary |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Wish I could be there. (stupid work!) have fun everybody
|
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Definately a lot of fun, thanks to 180 Spam and 1902 Exploding Bacon, who were with Team Krunch as chanpions.
Too bad one of our cars broke down on the way, then did it again, and one of our kids hurt himself in the hotel, then our front forks broke, then our back forks broke, then our battery chargers were found to be bad, then our teammate 1902 had a problem with their wheels, then our front forks broke again. But nothing is perfect, right? |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Mission Mayhem 2008 was once again mayhem, what a great event! Although we had our share of problems throughout the day batteling the field we managed to have a good finale. Then there was the moment that I will never forget in my life all the WFA winners and Woodie himself comming thru the front door at Mission Mayhem thanks for taking the time out to come visit and show your support guys. To all the voluenteers: you guys are wonderful the show can not go on with out you and you folks made it happen. The teams at Mayhem are also alot of fun as well and of course the lifeblood of the event. Finally to Mr.Arefin Bari you made it happen again bud congrats.
Referree, Drew Disbury (Who would have thought I'd ref an offseason) |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
I had a great time at Mission Mayhem, it was my first time going and my first torny with Bacon. It hurt to talk after, but it was well worth it.

Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Congratulations to the Mayhem Champions.
The Pink Team had an absolutely fantastic time as always with our share of chaos : D Thank you to all the volunteers for all your hard work and dedication of making this my once again a fantastic competition for my third year attending. btw, the WFA line up was amazingly epic. |

Hat's off to everyone involved in bringing Mayhem again to South FL, including sponsor Devry University. Stranahan High School shielded robots from rain for the 2nd year. This event isn't real without some weather, freak equipment failure, competitive play and unique moments. Having a team present from Puerto Rico was amazing & having Woodie Flowers drop by with several years of WFA honorees was jaw dropping! Additional favorite moments include Team 168 leading the Wave, 233's Rocobot freeing itself from overpass entanglement and watching lots of new drive teams control their machines. The carpet didn't stand a chance! Kudos to all. |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
Yes, once again Mayhem was mayhem. Rain and field problems. Go figure.
I was impressed to see Woody Flowers and the group of WFA winners show up. I didn't get a chance to talk to any of them, but thanks for coming. Thanks to Exploding Bacon for giving us a spare Banebot motor to replace the one that got RIPPED off of our robot. I am still amazed that we could shear a gearbox output shaft. Kudos to Arefin and the Mayhem organizational committee for pulling off another fine event. Keep it up and maybe you will be able to pull together a South Florida FRC regional one year. |
Re: Mission Mayhem 2008
This was the best Mission Mayhem ever. This event is ran based on teams and volunteers. Just like every single year teams have proven to me that Mayhem is not just my baby, it's theirs' as well.
- Thank you to Dr. Murphy, Dr. flowers and all the WFA winners for showing up on Saturday afternoon and taking this event to a top notch level. (Thank you Andy, Mr. Ellich, and Dave for organizing this). - I would like to thank team 744 and 168 for showing up Friday and working with us all day long to get the field together and organizing the pits - A special thanks goes out to the Puerto Rican team who came out to Mission Mayhem. Not only they put up a good fight on the field, they also showed up Friday and helped us put the field together. - Thank you to Juan Formoso whom without I wouldn't have been able to put the event together. - Thank you to Mr. Ellich and team 1251 for the beautiful trophies and for the help during setup day. You guys have proved me right when I said, "Mayhem is known for building hand made trophies." - Thank you to John Burke who has been by my side this whole time and advised me on how things should be done. - Thank you to all the volunteers who came down from different cities and put the show together. - Thank you to my best friend Neil Pincus (he also brought team 233's robot down), Marcus Hill, and Kenny partenan for being by my side throughout those two days and told me not to quit. - Thank you to Jane Young for the huge surprise and keeping me sane throughout the event. - Dan Richardson for coming down and DJ for us again. I don't think Mayhem would be the same without you. - George Wallace for being a great game announcer and working hard throughout the whole day. - John Catt, Matt Keller, and Ken from 79 for getting the webcast, scoring and video stuff together. - Thank you Brian Camp and Kenny Partenan for taking the role of Head Referees at the last second. Thanks to Dave Guzman, Bryan Phagan, Marcus Hill, Tim Arnold, Tom Fillipek for being referees for the event and running the game so smoothly. Mayhem wouldn't have happened without everybody who were in attendance and I thank you all. I hope to see you all at Tempest N' Tampa for another great event. Now for updates: 1) Awards will be posted on the website by the end of the week. 2) I will talk to Matt Keller and see if I can get all the videos up on SOAP and will talk to Greg Merra and see if we can get those videos up on Blue Alliance as well. 3) Mission Mayhem 2009 dates and venue will be available before Kickoff. I just need a few months break so I can recover. =) |
