FASTEST 2008 ROBOT

What is the fastest robot ( In feet per second ) in the overdrive challenge?

148 has nowhere near the top speed in f/s that many other teams did. 148 just tended to be a lot more agile and better driven.

Re: FASTEST 2008 ROBOT

I don't really think having the fastest robot is really that important. It may be cool to say our robot goes xx feet/sec, but how often does that really come into play? I think being quick or efficient in all tasks (in this game turning, pickup, hurdling) is more important than just straight ahead speed. It's like drafting a player lineman based on his forty time; only the first few yards (getting off the line/pulling) really matter.

Re: FASTEST 2008 ROBOT

Some operational figure-of-merit for lap-running performance, other than gearing and wheel size, would be more interesting. Maybe average number of laps completed during teleo? Or maybe highest qualifying seed?

148 seeded #1 at St. Louis, and Tumbleweed certainly looked faster than most of the robots there. Maybe 1098's little red Ferrari was faster (?); they seeded #2 at Oklahoma City.

Which other racerbots seeded high?

Re: FASTEST 2008 ROBOT

I agree with XaulZan11. Even though some robots may go up to 30FPS, how much pushing power do they have so they can make laps? I know 148 was faster than us, but in the Bayou Regional, we could made more laps than they did, and I believe we actually held the record for the most laps in a single match at the Bayou Regional. Don't quote me on this because I don't have concrete facts and I'm going off of memory and scouting.

We didn't really focus on lapping in New Orleans. Most matches we were playing a defensive role. This greatly reduced our lap count. As the season went on and the game developed, so did our strategies. This resulted in drastically different play between St. Louis (week 1) and New Orleans (week 5).

Our team focuses on continuous improvement. We knew that bringing our St Louis game to New Orleans would be foolish. (Though, I think we all wish the auton would have been up to the STL level.)

364 has an incredible machine, and they are a great team. I'm looking forward to seeing them again at IRI. It was cool to see such a great hurdler could also function well as a lap-bot.

This is true. We are geared at about 20 ft/s free-speed. During the build season we were geared as high as 30 ft/s free-speed, but this turned out to be foolish.

Our goal was to build a robot which was fast on the field, not fast in a drag race. Our experimentation and iteration showed that we were faster and more consistent with a slower top-speed (it is weird to describe 20fps as "slower").

This is why we would get beat easily by some other lap-bots in drag-races, or in open-field lap-races. However, this system was not intended for either of those scenarios, ours was designed to compete in a FIRST Overdrive match, with 5 other robots. *shrug*

We may be one of the fastest robots, but we are not the fastest.
Kudos to all the teams who can toast us!

your right it is much better to be a well rounded team...but as for our team(2560) we chose to be simple and fast as a rookie team. i was just wondering as a rookie team how we did in comparison to veteran teams at our chosen field. as for going 30FPS on the small playing field we programed our motors to "brake" for the turns wich helped out emensly. but if someone got in front of us we would do a few revolutions trying to get around them.

While I was attending the Jersey regional this past season, I had the pleasure of speaking with one of the mentors and some students from Team 102. One of their mentors stated that they were moving 27 fps. To my knowledge, I believe they were the fastest robot we have seen on the field this past season. As far as build season video's go, 148's tumbleweed was the fastest. As John stated, they slowed tumbleweed down during the competition.

Suprisingly we were only about 13-15 fps. Wobot was significantly faster then us when they went into high gear. We just concentrated pretty much completely on laps. Our max laps in tele was 11(dunno what were gonna do this weekend... laps or defense depends on the rule changes i guess). This just shows you don't need to be fast to make laps

I definitely noticed 148's transition to a defensive bot, especially at the championship. I congratulate your team's success. I believe I watched one of the videos with your team geared to 30FPS. When Tumbleweed went around a corner, it tipped on its side (can't really say one or two wheels). I would hate to keep control of the robot going at that speed.

Our robot is geared right around 15FPS, with 6WD and 4 CIMS. We could have been much faster if we had wished, but we ended up going with a mid-speed robot with a lot of power. In autonomous we had to ramp up our start because we would make a wheelie. I believe our robot is fast enough and strong to be competitive. I only really wish our hurdling ability was a little better, but we were worried about our COG with more mechanisms toward the top of the robot.

Team WOBOT had a pretty fast robot too. about 21 fps. It was only about 16 fps at the Wisconsin and West Michigan Regionals, but we bumped it up by fixing some glitches in the code to 21.

we also saw 148 in Bayou, we just had no idea you guys were playing the defensive role.

u were known for the laps in St. Luis so when we saw you guys we were confused.

I can confirm this.

102 was the fastest robot in FRC this year. They were not the quickest to accelerate, but their top speed was faster than anyone else I saw*.

Team 102 won the FIRST Finale Asphalt Challenge by covering a 110 ft. course in 4.45 seconds. This AVERAGES out to almost 25 feet per second. Their top speed was above 28 fps, I would assume. Other "fast" robots ran this course at no faster than 5.5 seconds.

On the Overdrive field, 102 was able to get good speed in the straightaways, but they were slower at accelerating compared to a few other robots.

I almost want to say we filmed that after gearing the speed down, but John would have to confirm that. I can't remember exactly when things happened during the build anymore hehe. The main reason we never tipped as far up like that during the season is the wheelie-balls we added underneath.

I also thought 1114 was pretty fast, but they assured me it was only geared around 15 f/s.

If I had to choose my favorite 'fast bot' it would definitely be Cheesy Poofs. I just loved their robot and their techniques on how to not only have a fast drive, but fast slide, etc.

I hope Andy doesn't mind me answering the question. They had a custom one speed gearbox (4 of them) that went to each mecanum wheels. Each gearbox was powered by one small cim motors. Perhaps, it would be great if someone from team 102 can post some detailed pictures.

It depends on how you look at it. If you assume 100% efficiency throughout our system, and a 5500 RPM free speed for the CIMs, theoretically we're geared for 18.4 fps in high gear. That being said, the 100% efficiency assumption is clearly flawed. Using some standard efficiency numbers, we figure a more accurate top speed for our robot is between 15-16 fps, as quoted by Parker.

So, we were pretty fast, but definitely not the fastest. (I'm sure there's some Canadian metric vs. imperial joke to be made in all of this, but I'll leave it to someone wittier than myself.)

1114 was an interesting "fast" robot. I walked away from both GTR and Waterloo with the idea firmly planted in my head that 1114 was the "fastest" robot there. But I also knew they weren't geared for a top speed as high as many other robots there.

It's a world of difference when your drivers find the seams with such skill that they rarely have to slow down.

Now THAT'S fast...

Re: FASTEST 2008 ROBOT

While 1114 clearly isn't the fastest, they appear so fast because they have no wasted motion. They don't ever overturn, misline up picking a ball, or any other inefficient motions. They get the max out of thier 15 or so f/s due to thier fantastic drivers.

Nah...furlongs are, as I recall, 1/8 of a mile, or about 200 yards (English) and both metric and imperial use the same time units (Fortnight=2 weeks).

I'm guessing that 1114 found foot-wide gaps and made them meter-wide ones, though.

This is the exact same feeling I've had watching 330 over the past four years. In 2007, there was no doubt in my mind that they were the fastest team in FIRST, until I heard what they were actually geared for. There's a world of difference between fastest robot in open space, and the fastest robot in an actual FIRST match.

Yea you guys had a really fast robot, it made the field look much smaller then it really is. Just looks like all you need to change is the oversteering and you could have an amazing lap-count.

we were able to get 11 laps once with us going around 13-15fps in this match http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv...p?matchid=7307 . it was our best match statisticly but I think our best match is this one http://www.thebluealliance.net/tbatv...p?matchid=7346 . Re: FASTEST 2008 ROBOT

1098 never measured flat out speed but in a classroom we did 21fps. 1098 has gotten 6 lines in autonomous and often got 10 laps in tele with a full field. We have gotten the sensors working correctly and can do more in atonomous but it depends on traffic. The speed is a tough one, our bot is light and narrow but in Overdrive traffic to avoid a robot changing direction sometimes our driver would swerve and end up hitting another robot. It was a very tough and delicate balance between going fast and not hitting other players. I had refs comment that they saw the wheels running full speed in reverse and knew the driver was trying but we still hit a robot and we needed to be more careful.

1098 had a great season!

Thank you to everyone involved in FIRST!

Re: FASTEST 2008 ROBOT

This is a bit off topic, since it concerns '07, but can someone tell me if the Behind The Design chapter on the robonauts is telling the truth?
It says that they managed to achieve 16 meters per second (52.5 feet per second) as a top speed with their V6 and crab drive. That translates to 35.7 mph, which is waaay too high for me to believe. I think they actually were only able to go 16 feet per second. Is that right?

On topic, 2560, you guys have an amazingly fast robot. Every video I saw you guys in, the announcer was always commenting on you. Definitely in the top 5 speeds this year.
I would also like to know 1024's speed, I know the perspective makes them seem faster just like 330 and 1114, but their robot seemed to keep pace with a lot of dedicated lapbots.

Sorry, but practice matches don't count. Fewer robots, less congestion, and I think more time (not sure about that last one). They're practice, nothing more. 12 in one regular match, now that's a bit better.

We were ranked 3rd at the event..running about 7-8 laps a match if we weren't trying to play some defense... I know we weren't the fastest, but i know for sure if we could just run laps we could consitaly run around 9 laps..good handling and fast..

While not the fastest bot out there, 381 was easily the best lap runner I saw all year. And that's no small feat, as I attended NJ, VCU, Philly, NYC, and Championship. They were a phenomenal lapping machine, weaving in and out of traffic without a hitch. Honorable mentions to 1655, 405, and 2016.

It says that they managed to achieve 16 meters per second (52.5 feet per second) as a top speed with their V6 and crab drive. That translates to 35.7 mph, which is waaay too high for me to believe. I think they actually were only able to go 16 feet per second. Is that right?

Oh no, this is true... we'd actually take the thing out on the highway and drag race mopeds.
;)

Looks like a typo... hadn't noticed that. Maybe next year though :)

That's just amazing. It's great to see so many new innovations designed by high schoolers.

We didn't attend any tournaments where there have been other "wicked fast" lap bots, but we think our "Speed Racer" would have given other lap-bots a run for their money.

We didn't get to compete with our "Speed Racer" robot configuration during the regular season, but did compete at last weekend's "Beantown Blitz" as a separate team (shown in the standings as "Team 9151").

This was the first tournament in which Speed Racer competed -- during the regular season, only two practice matches were driven at the Granite State Regional. So far this offseason, Speed Racer has only been a "substitute" robot at WPI's Battlecry -- Beantown Blitz, however, was the first tournament in which Speed Racer actually competed, as "Team 9151".

Videos of our best teleop round (13 laps) is now available on the team's webpage at http://www.mechanicalmayhem.org or http://www.team1519.org You can go directly to the page with the video on it at http://www.mechanicalmayhem.org/teamvideos.asp

Our 7-line, 13-lap round was preceded by a match boasting 8 lines in auto and 10 laps in teleop and followed by a 7 line, 11 lap match. I'm sure there must have been some faster robots out there in a straight line, but Speed Racer's maneuverability makes for some very quick laps, whether in competition or on an empty field.

118 was pretty fast in Curie but 1519B aka 9151 was extremely fast - 8 lines in autonomous more than once and over 10 lines per match.
