Chief Delphi Back Online!

For a little while now CD has been inaccessible to many people. You are not alone. The site was down.

Brandon's Away message during the CD troubles and the Slashdot article of the explosion at ThePlanet database server went hand in hand and explained the crisis to many FIRSTers right away.

While they claim redundant power, because of the nature of the problem they had to go completely dark. This goes to show that no matter how much planning you do, Murphy's Law still applies.

Yep -- the server ChiefDelphi (and firstwiki) is on is hosted in Dallas, so it wasn't in any danger. Our DNS, however, is hosted in Houston .. so most people couldn't get to the server.

I wonder how many users went into withdrawal and needed therapy?

You should see my workshop... going to take a week to clean it up.
Its funny how "Hooked on Robotics" one can get... and how badly we start going to pieces and slinging tools around when our mainline goes down.

It wasn't pretty!

<raises hand> But it had absolutely nothing to do with CD being inaccessible... :D

It's a good thing it was off season and not say the last Sunday in February or March. Then it would have got ugly.

I would've fixed it way faster, then.

Off-season .. I just let things work out on their own.

Well, lack of CD has made me a mite philosophical.

There was a time not too long ago when communications like this were not so instant, wide spread, and influential.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Regarding CD - it is a lonely thing when it is gone, I do know that. :)

Thank you to the folks who restored access.

I was (kind of) freaking out because I had stuff I needed to post about Mayhem in Merrimack.

I even logged on before going to school to get it out.

I'm not exactly a morning person and I like being early to get a good parking space, so having any downtime in the morning is rare.

I noticed that the TIMs accounts for teams were also down... Are the FIRST servers in Texas?

Ha, go figure, some network servers at work were messed up. I contributed inability to get on CD to the inability to get on any external site altogether and vice versa, hence I never tried anything else on the internet until lunch time. See what happens when we use any one thing as a metric for other things?

Not quite, but I realized how much time I actually spend here when I kept checking to see if I could get on every half hour. I guess Chief Delphi kind of spoils all of us, what would do if we didn't have Chief Delphi?:ahh:

Funny--first one of my computers at work dies (which was followed by much configuring of a new one), then CD. What next?

(and yeah, add another one to the therapy set.)

Is it me or are the CD notification emails taking some time to catch up? I received a "New Private Message" email for a PM I replied to about five hours previous. I'm also getting subscribed thread new post emails for posts I've already viewed. ;)

That downtime has affected gamers also. Ridiculous. I nearly lost my mind with *half of the internet brought down on it's knees. ThePlanet.com still has a few servers down, they got hit pretty hard by it.

Thankfully, I now have CD to read, at least.

*half = all servers hosted in Texas; is not an exact estimation, just my guess

Unfortunately, I didn't go insane... I knew a Martus would get it fixed in their spare time if need be. I was content with IRC for the time being... you know, #firstrobotics on freenode

Wow - I read the article on Slashdot the other day but I didn't really think that it had affected anything that I browse - crazy!
