Nonetheless it was a great learning experience, and something we will be accounting for in the future.

Perhaps AM should take note not to use plastic on the motor-side of their tyrannies anymore ;)

This is pretty common when you use the FP's with just two CIM's. We had this problem often in 2006. We burned up probably 10-12 FP's with a similar setup. If you don't have a heatsink/fan blasting the motors it's pretty much guaranteed to happen if you're using them under a lot of load.

Suprisingly, it was the CIM's that got hot, not the FP's... The FP's stayed nice and cool (we used heat sinks).

We never had this issue of over heating CIM's with our aluminum plates, and we had only half the motors in the drive :ahh:.

Congrats to the WRRF for yet another terrific Cal Games. Ryan Epperson did an outstanding job as Cal Games manager, as did the awesome group of volunteers who supported the event. We totally enjoyed the energy at the venue, especially in the elimination rounds.

We're looking forward to coming back and maybe winning two matches in next year's finals!;)

Thank you David, We could not have done it without the field that you brought up from LA. That helped make CalGames such a success!

Thank you to all the teams that came and volunteered, we were packed up and out of Mitty in under 2 hours! We could not have done it with out all of the students and Mentors. You guys help CalGames run smoothly!

Thank you!

I really don't understand the issue that was happening, can you provide more details about your system?

From what I'm assuming, your gearbox is a Super shifter with one pair of the shifting gears removed, with custom plastic plates, a single small CIM and a FP into an AM planetary (with a heatsink).

Breakers were being tripped, and the CIMs were hot are the symptoms you claim?

I also don't understand how your CIMs stayed cool when there was only a single on each side; Every drive I've been involved with since 05 had atleast two CIMs (and in once case a FP in additon) and they always became really hot after use.

Yes.

We brought ice-packs to the games expecting the FPs to over-heat. We were very cautious to keep their temp down. We never worried about the CIMs until the finals matches :ahh:

Keep in mind that our old trannies had aluminum side plates.

As Mr. Baker explained to me, shifting did a lot to lighten the load on the CIM's. Running at our slow-speed of 6 fps didn't draw a lot of current. We only used the high speed down the straight-aways.

Our new transmissions were geared slightly higher to 11 fps, which probably drew more amps when turning.

We also had new drivers at CalGames, who might have been pushing our robot harder than I ever did...
