What do you guys do with your old robots?

The title says it all. Our team is wondering where we should put our old robot from last season. Of course we will practice off it, especially the robots in the coming years with the new control system. But after a couple of years, you have a bunch of robots and they are just collecting dust. What do you do?

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We usually keep them near our current robot, which gradually cannibalizes them down to almost nothing.

I know that many other teams with more storage/raw material stock save them for years though.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We have all of our robots from 2005 and on still together and either functioning, or close to functioning. We use them for demonstrations, to practice programming and driving for the next year, and to just look awesome.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

There's been a lot of threads before if you search you'll find some cool ideas. One is to donate your old robot to a rookie team for them to use parts and learn how things work. Personally I like to keep them and we have our 05,07,08 bots in the shop in semi-running condition. The 05 bot is fully functional for the most part, 07 needs some fuses and relays but will still run and 08 needs the drivetrain reassembled because it was being experimented on by graduating senior.

Also old bots are excellent for driver training. As long as the game doesn't change substantially next year (steps, gaps, or water  ) we'll most likely use our Kit based six wheel drive. So our future drivers they'll have something to train on early on assuming we stay 6WD.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We use our '06 robot for presentation and display purposes. Most of the others have either been modified for prototyping or just gradually gutted over the long process of time. Some, however, still work, and we utilize them for driver practice and game simulations from time to time. Best use of old robots, though, in my mind, is to show visitors and potential members the variety that this program has shown, and helping both relate team history to new members and show them just what they're getting into(and how awesome FIRST really is :))

*Search a little before starting new threads- I'm sure this topic has been covered at least once on these forums before.
EDIT- Oops. I was beaten to the punch...

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

Well, our first two robots, from '03 and '04 are long gone. They got demolished for parts. '05 is a skeleton, but if we put the compressor, motors, etc. back in it would probably work. From '06 on, we save the competition bot and take the practice bot apart at the start of the next year's build season. We play, practice, train drivers, teach members, demonstrate, and show off with our 3-peat bots.

With the exception of the current year's practice robot, the working robots are stored at our practice facility, because we don't have room in our school's workshop. Plus, we can practice our defense with the old bots and prepare our drivers for the New England defense they'll see at the regional.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

At the beginning of the season. The first order is to dissassemble the old robot. We do not have the space nor money to keep the old robot and build new one, so the metal gets recycled, and we salvage what we can.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

330 has kept robots for a while now, but also takes parts from them--in order:
1997: not sure
1998: Somewhere at JPL
1999: In pieces somewhere...
2000: The "hook" on that, along with the upper stage of the lift, are in one shop; the rest is...
2001: Frame together, turntable together in another place. Stopped working for the last time in 2003.
2002: We'll never get that one completely apart... Doesn't run, but mostly together in one shop.
2003: Joins 2002, but might run again if the gearboxes were maintained.
2004: Still running, but it's been used as a practice/defense robot for some time now. Parts have been removed; the lift no longer runs due to motor removal for use in 2005 competition.
2005: Runnable, though not in competition form. Should be restored, but not sure when that'll happen.
2006: Running, used as defense.
2007: Running, though used as practice robot.
2008: Running.

1135, on the other hand, only has space for one or two FRC robots. Non-performers that aren't current get taken apart, save for 2003 (stolen).

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

I'll do an auto biography style of what we do. :D

Chapter 1: There once was this robot named Rack Star, no one knew of this robot as it was born in the young minds of students early in January. For 6 weeks, rack star began to grow, learn, and play with it's older siblings. Finally, the time came when it was time for the robot to move on. The young Rackstar then moved into a small mobile home, where it traveled all around the country to and play with those just like it. The young Rack Star attended concerts, and listened to those who commanded it following in the rock in roll way. In the end, feeling homesick, it traveled back to its birth place to settle down.

Chapter 2: Rackstar stayed in his birth home for many months until his parents returned to clean it up (finally lol). Rackstar started getting moved to different buildings, letting those like his parents see him run. He would have fun every now and then by running full blast toward a person, then stopping suddenly. Soon, one of these viewing gained him new parents to learn everything about him.

Chapter 3: Rackstar's first birthday had finally come! And a new robot was born. His parents then began to put him through the hardest few weeks ever as they started using him for drivers practice. Hamtray, Rackstar's younger brother then began to live the same life he did, following in his footsteps. After Hamtray took off in Rackstar's old moble home, rackstar sat in his birth home for a few months. Every now and then, while Hamtray was on his own tour, Rackstar would be taken to different places to show himself off. Rackstar was getting old however, and there were a lot of pieces starting to fall off.

Chapter 4: Hamtray returned from his tour, and began being taken around to show off himself. Rackstar then joined the "Gutted" weight loss system, loosing all of his electronics and pneumatics for use on back up robots in the future. His parents love him dearly, and they have created a memorial for him, and those older siblings of his to proudly stand for all to see.

Please note, both Rackstar and Hamtray had twin siblings, and their stories are no where near the same! :p

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We have every robot we're ever made except for our '92 robot which is now property of FIRST robotics and on display at FIRST Place. The other robots are on permanent display at our robotics site in our museum. We use them whenever we begin the design process all over again to learn what will work and what won't. We use our previous year's robot for demos and practice until the practice bot is complete which is used to design the new year's prototype.
We never dispose our old robots and we try to avoid cannibalizing the robots as much as possible.

Pretty much the same here, except we have our '92 bot and we cannibalize our electronics to save money. But we have some demo bots specifically like the meccanum bot and the mecannon bot (rackstar's twin with a t-shirt cannon and meccanum wheels).

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We usualy just cannibalize our robots for the next year but the past few years we have customized our robots into fun things. We have turned out '07 bot into a humaniod looking robot called Mr. Burgato for out mentor Mr. Burg and we have even more recently turned our '06 bot into a rideable go cart, we put joysticks on the robot so a person can drive the robot while sitting on top of it (pictures comming soon), it is very fun to drive and lights up little kids faces.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

On 1618:
2005: The rails and end caps are assembled; that's about it.
2006: It hasn't been run since I joined the team (and, if the sources are to be believed, it didn't run well when it did run), but it's all physically together. We keep talking of overhauling it, but plans haven't ever quiiiiiite made it to fruition.
2007 (Uppercut): We changed the arm to pneumatics (Uppercut now can only deliver an uppercut to the particularly short), and the gripper still doesn't work, but it's driving and together. We removed some superfluous electrical components along with the arm conversion.
2008 (Speedy Debris): Exactly how we left it at Chesapeake. I'm hoping we can get something together in the off-season for it.

On my old team, 1293:
2004 (Bob): Just the frame remains.
2005 (Ockham's Raizor): Only the frame and side panels remain; much of the 80/20 of its lift was used on Atlas.
2006 (Chomp): Stripped to the drive base. The practice robot's mechanism is still around, though.
2007 (Atlas): Still around and running (though not necessarily turning).
2008 (R5D5): Still in one piece, last I heard.

1 Attachment(s)
They work great as prototypes! Salvaging the drivetrains from past robots to speed up the testing process is immensely useful. We used the 2007 robot last year to test out our mechanisms early in the build season. An interesting side effect is that our designs end up being very modular...

Our modified 2007 bot on the left, and our nearly finished 2008 bot on the right. They're almost twins!

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

Last I checked...
Minus pillaged electronics, '05 is still around, '06 and (I think) '07 are completely gone, and '08 is still there unless the team was capable of doing a complete teardown of the robot in five minutes the day the robot got back.

2005 - Disassembled, the lift is still together.

2006 - Assembled (For now). Does not run.

2007 (Competition Robot)- Assembled and working. Used for defense and demos.

2007 (Practice Robot) - Disassembled, used for off-season/build season prototyping. Cannibalized for spares.

2008 (Competition Robot) - Assembled and working. Currently on display at county fair.

2008 (Practice Robot) - In two pieces (lift and drivetrain). Cannibalized for spares. Being used for off-season prototyping.

Wow, you guys, thanks for all of your answers! I'm new to CD, and I am amazed at how fast people reply. Of course, there's over a million members. Of course, being new, I did a total noobish thing and didn't search. Only until after I posted, I noticed that there were about 5 other threads about this same thing. And, I stupidly didn't read the things in the "read these first" sticky before I made this thread.

But, oh well; there thankfully isn't too much damage done. We were all noobs once. :)

It seems that most people use the old parts, keep the robots for demonstration purposes, or recycle the metal parts. I like the recycling idea. We don't have a lot of space for our robot(s) at our school, so one of the reasons I made this thread was find out some reasons for getting rid of the parts. Donating, recycling, throwing away.

Any more ideas for our situation would be great, thanks so much.

1676:

2005 - All parts are intact, but not on Robot; Robot is a 6 wheel Chasis now, used for proto-typing

2006 - Robot is a shell - all parts are there, minus electronics and wheels
2006b- Kitbot Chassis, with the 2006 Electronics - used for testing

2007 - Fully Operational

2008 - Fully Operational

If you absolutely have to get rid of parts, I'd suggest trying to donate them to another team instead of throwing them away. There are a ton of teams that would benefit from extra parts to play with.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

2008 100%
2007 86%
2006 90%
2005 100%
2004 32%
2003 40%
2002 70%
2001 60%
2000 65%

These are some rough percentages on the old robots and how much they are together and working order. I have been trying to bring all back to life but it has been proven difficult to get into the shop and find certain parts. all of they retain a framework of themselves and just have been dissemble to build demos and what not. 2001 bot was completely taken apart and reassembled in my room at home only to find out that the gearboxes and power supply can't support the drive system. so yeah that wasn't a great day at power up. yet my hopes are to return them all to 90 to 100 percent.

1468 -
all robots (2k4 through 2k8) except for 2k5 are in working order, or at least could be made to work within a few hours. A few tweaks would probably be necessary with some of them.

311(disbanded in 2005)-
2k2 half disassembled in my garage.
2k3 stripped to basic chassis in my garage.
2k4 fully working . . in my garage.
I've been using 2k4 as a demo bot for new teams occasionally.

2487("old" rookie existed in 2k1 then disbanded)-
former team robot from 2k1 is still in their lab, could be made working with proper programming.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

Our team is running out of room for robots. Someone's office is our everything room (besides acual shop) so after three robots, its about time we start doing something with our robots.... until then;

05- First robot, but I don't think we'll ever completely destroy that one. Still togeather, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't run.

06-Its gone. (I wasn't around for this 'bot) It was made out of Polycarbonite and I guess it wasn't really the best bot ever, so all we have left is our shooter.

07- Our Arm doesn't work, but we use that bot at all our demos. It looks amazing and its a great example of mecannum.

08- Fully functional since Milwaukee/CRI but our lift works (minus programming).

So of our two functional robots, we use them for driver practice and demos.

Basically the same thing that we have done.

All our older bots from 1999 to about 2003 are completely gone. We don't have the space for them and unfortunately can't save them all. We have 2 bots that are together (2008 and 2005/6?) and then the frame and assorted parts of 2 more that I know off.

Sometimes you're forced to disassemble Johhny-Five :P

2000 - Still mostly intact, we do occasionally take parts off of it.
2001 - Gone

2003 - Still intact; missing many PWM cables.
2004 - Arm converted to new tshirt shooter; base sitting under a desk
2005 - converted into the new tshirt shooter
2006 - converted into the new tshirt shooter
2007 - intact, missing RC
2008 - ready to roll

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

2006: Gone for the most part, save for the shooter.
2007: Gutted...
We removed the ramps and attached our 2006 shooter to the top of the frame. There are wheels on the frame, but no transmission, so we just push it around when we want to display it.

2008: Still intact, but we converted the flipper into a giant dustpan and the forklift into a ... bigger dustpan. It collects and throws away garbage left on the ground.

Then we realized that it doesn't work that well, so we just use it to collect Poofballs for the 06/07 bot until we come up with something more practical.

And I think we still have our old frames around somewhere...

If you're looking for something to do with your old robots that helps other people, why not think about donating your robot to us, the FIREBIRDS, FRC team 433? We'll take your robot, pack it up, and ship it to a team we started in Ghana, Africa, as part of our Donate Your Robot/Give your FIRST robot a SECOND life campaign. Our goal is to send enough robots so that the team we started can host its own competition with other schools in Ghana and eventually fundraise enough money to help them register at a regional competition. If anyone has any questions about the FIREBIRDS' Donate Your Robot campaign, please feel free to PM me and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Thanks,

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We keep all our robots and have only this past year begun to use old old speed controllers and such.

1999- was cannibalized
2000- classroom, missing one wheel, control system, and has lost it's speed controllers for the fixing of other old robots.
2001-class room, missing one gear for drive-train and control system.
2002-class room, Missing parts of control system, other than that, it all turns on and appears to be in working health.
2003-Classroom, Fully Functional
2004-classroom-gear box has one cim working on each side (the drill motors burned out on each side) Also the tower extends but does not rotate, due to faulty speed controller.
2005-Classroom, missing 2 wheels(lost at main Mech mentor's house, aka Mike D's) tower rotates but does not extend due to fault speed controller or two.
2006-classroom, fully functional except for rollers which have been turned off for demos due to the noise factor.
2007-is at the highschool w/o a classroom, that is also fully functional
2008-Driver's house to practice, last I heard. Fully functional, and possibly to be improved b4 IRI

We use our robots for several things. One, kids on our team look at them, mess with them, take them apart, put them back together, and fix them when they break while being practiced with. This helps the new kids learn lots and lots and see how it all comes together before build season starts.

Also, many students learn and practice programming by taking home old robots to practice all kinds of programming.

Also, we use them to practice like crazy during build season, and also at other times like before an offseason or two.

Demos, are probably the biggest use of the old robots as year round we try our best to do things by ourselves and often with other teams from nearby to show our communities what FIRST robotics is all about, and how valuable of a resource it is.

2001-wilma= running 100% just a squeak problem and a bimba replaced lol
2002-Dorothy= running 100% not a single problem since made
2003-Gloria= was in shambles till 06' cause she was used for spare parts. now rebuilt and workin 100% including auton.
2004-Libby=100% as well, only a replaced speed controller
2005-Cleo= 95%, we took off the tennis ball and a peice of the arm, still works fine
2006-Annie=105% (we added something to her for offseason in 06) still shoots balls great
2007-brigit= 100% ramps still good lol
2008-Miss Ella= ??% lets just say, she's getting upgraded for offseason lol ()=D

yeap.. 522 keeps their robots in shape!

Wow, that is very impressive to keep that many robots in working condition.

My teams 2008 robot had rust on it after sitting in the lab for just 2 weeks after our last competition(it still works though)
Our 2007 robot has been sitting in the lab for over a year and and hasn't got any damage at all.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

The 177 version
95 used as a model for 2008
96 Mostly intact
97 Never recovered from being turned into the 98 prototype
98 Still intact.
99 Still intact
2000 ~80%
2001 Fully functional
2002 Cannibalized and driven from memopy
2003 ~90%
2004 We parked it in a bad neighborhood and when we got back it was a bare frame on blocks. That's the story we tell everyone anyway.
2005 Moded into a pratice bot for 2007 but Mostly there.
2006 We reworked it for Battlecry that year but it's 95% original, maybe missing an AndyMark shifter.
2007 Amazingly still in tact.
2008 Getting "adjusted" for IRI.

We are actually running out of room at this point and need to figure out what to do.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

1075 has major issues with keeping past bots working.

2003 (rookie year [finalists at canadian regional]): almost completely cannibalized... It got largely cannibalized in 2004, but was reassembled in the 2004 offseason, then subsequently re-cannibalized. Would probably take a week or more to put back together.

2004: Was not very good at Canadian Regional, so we replaced the worm gear driven arm with pneumatics and won the Wonderland Invitational with it. It remained in close to running condition until it came to building 2008's bot. Its missing alot of PWM cables now.

2005: didnt compete

2006: Robot was a horrid attempt at a swerve drivetrain. In the offseason it was quickly replaced with a prototype of our tracks that have remained essentially the same in 07 and 08 and likely for 09. The belts broke the day before the Wonderland Invitational (they took like 6 weeks to get here from Germany too) It was promptly cannibalized in 07, and almost nothing remains of even the frame, its been cut up and used for prototyping various mechanisms and so forth.

2007: Mostly functional, the way our drivetrains are built now, they are interchangable from 07 to 08, so it might be sitting on blocks, could be made to be fully functional in a few hours... relegated to a life of demos.

2008: Mostly dismantled, was not effective at all, and we've built almost a complete new robot for the offseason... design is top secret. Structural members have been converted into other uses on the new machine, and whats left of it lives outside. Teams coming to North Brunswick, or Flint in the offseason will see it.

2005: Could drive, front wheels gone. Don't think arm works.

2006: Hopper gone. Possibly works.

2007: Ramps gone. Arm gone. Still drives.

2008: Ready to roll.

All except for '08 have been scavenged for parts here and there.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

1997- long gone, we have a few pictures of it
1998- gone
1999- gone
2000- gone
2001- gone
2002- gone
2003- gone, we have a few pictures of it
2004- also gone, more pictures than the other old ones
2005- gone, we have a lot of pictures since that was the start of our more "modern" Blue Lightning
2006- Our star robot, she stayed together for a long time after the season and still functions with her shooter. The pickup isn't programmed right now. One of her axles got bent last year though, so we're not sure if we can drive her in the parades anymore
2007- dismantled for scrap metal, the chain drive and gripper are still lying around a member's house
2008- In perfect condition, and so far making a great demobot.

I kinda wish we knew more about our team's old robots... We won two regionals in 2000 and 2001 but don't know if we were a captain or a first or second pick or whatever. It didn't help that most of the original team members from Kod-Red never stuck around and the first adviser retired.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We keep our robots in our shop on display. This allows us to use ideas from past years to help design the current year. This year we got the past years robots working all the way back to '03. This was especially neat this year because we could impede our robot on our field and have our driver get closer to real match experience. We have lots of storage space due to great donations of shelving. We also have just about unlimited aluminum thanks to Patrick Metals. If you need some aluminum at a competition come find us.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

i dont think i am as well qualified as the others on my team ( i'm headed into 10th grade)to answer this but i'll give it a shot.

2003,2004- no idea

2005- still functional ( we use it in our town's memorial day parade to hoist our banner)

2006- i think we gave it to a rookie team we mentored so they could modify it and use it for this year. (again, i think, i'll have to check)

2007- intact, i'm pretty sure it still runs, some pieces have been removed to do other things

2008- still in fine working condition

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

I suggest you use them for recruiting events. I know by seeing an actual robot it gave me that extra push to join the them. There also good for driving practice when your robots being shipped off to competitions or even during off season.

we have the past three years bots still
but we have our rookie bot from 2002 its pretty cool looking:)

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

'95 - '04 COMPLETELY vanished. Most of the parts have vaporized :D We don't even know what most of these looked like (pictures have been lost too) :)

'05 - '06 Look carefully and you may find a part or too... But don't count on it...

'07 - '08 Perfect condition. We run both robots all the time.

Sadly, with the exception of '99 and '95 I don't think our old robots were even worth keeping :(

In my opinion, they're almost always worth keeping, even if they didn't work, newer kids can always learn what doesn't work and why.

If we'd kept all our duds we'd have run outa space long ago :o

Some of the earliest robots were made out of wooden pallets and conduit. Some of those robots were designed to be disassembled, so we could fit them in a box to ship them to nationals.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We use them for training purposes mostly.

We don't really have the space to hang on to all of our robots, so we currently only have three. Our 2008 competition robot, its practice clone, and our 2007 competition robot.

We're hanging on to the 2007 robot until we (can't really say that anymore) they build a new robot that serves as a better demo bot.

We have to disassemble them for parts and even toss some that aren't really useful and are just taking up space.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

All but 1 of our 14 robots is still with us and working. We have cage space in our basement that we keep them all in. It's a shame we can't display them somehow.

The other day, we brought up 6 of them to make sure they are working properly. We usually spend the summers maintaining old robots for parades and demos.

we store our old robots in the library as a "display" for students to see. then we take them to the lab whenever we need them for driving practice, demonstrations, or programing.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

2001 was a very rookie robot and only the chassis survived for a two or three years.
2002 was a tank of a chassis and was all welded so it's chassis survived for many years but may have been chopped down to a base for some purpose or other.
2003 I am drawing a blank
2004 was the year that the drive system made it nearly impossible to drive but once again the drive base was welded and still survives with each year on the option list to be used as a motorized robot cart.
2005 Regional Champion with 118 & 231 has been refitted with steel pipe air storage and barrel for tee shirt cannon use at football games and most recently minor league baseball.
2006 Was an omni-wheel kiwi drive that was really cool and rebuilt while in Atlanta due to shipping damage that most likely resulted in the 2007 rule about crate design being added to the team shipping manual. Was recently used to test IFI Mecanum wheels, though not finished. Conveyor design was used to design this year's robot.
2007 used for the Beta test this fall of the cRIO
2008 alive and working, used for demo purposes as the boxing gloves are way to cool.
2009 still waiting to get it back from Atlanta.

2188 is a young team and we have 3 robots now. Here is the status of each:

2007 "Fatboy" - Recognizable, and a weeks worth of work will get it running again

2008 "Hurricane" - Destroyed, not by us, by the competition

2009 "Nuke" - Running, and we plan to keep it that way

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

Well, we generally keep the robot we have all the way up until the season, but once the season starts, we generally disassemble the robot in order to scavenge parts. And since the economic crunch, this has become more important for us.

05- base is used as a test bed

06 fully functional

07 fully functional

08 fully functional

09 fully functional

All are used for demo's

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

2002-2006 - Disassembled
2007 - With a couple of components, it is fully functional; used this past season for an off-season project
2008 - Stripped down to a drivebase originally for testing the new control system; planning to use it for prototyping

Our school's science department kindly granted us what is essentially a part of a hallway for our lab. We don't really have space to keep old robots.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We put our old robots on a shelf we built in our lab.

1999 - Disappeared
2000 - Stripped to the Bare Frame
2001 - Displayable
2002 - Disappeared
2003 - Displayable
2004 - Displayable (Just needs some gearbox work)
2005 - Functional
2006 - Displayable
2007 - Stripped to the Bare Frame
2008 - Functional (except for broken 3rd arm)
2009 - Functional

Maybe we'll get to restoring some of them over the summer...

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

We still have our 2006 main machine and twin together, primarily because they are fantastic demo machines that can really work a crowd. Our other bots have either been scrounged for spare parts, completely disassembled, or modified for prototyping. We could probably get most of them back together with a little work, but for now it's 2006, 2008, and 2009 that are in functional order.

IKE 19-05-2009 13:43

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

I believe that all of the machines since 2000 are around and in storage. As far as funtional, I think most could be with some preparation.

We mostly use them to reminiss and discuss design details with the students. They collect a truly gross amount of dust! These actually remind me a lot of retired racecars. Incredibly high performance machines in their day, but without continuous TLC they quickly turn into relics.

2009 - Will be used at IRI and other off season events.
2008 - Functional but the frame took quite a beating from numerous wall slams in Automode
2007 - Technically complete, but suffered catastrophic fatigue failure during YES expo demonstration. I consider this an engineering achievement considering how much a premium weight was that year (see Behind the Design book), and the machine pretty much lived exactly 2 seasons worth of competition hours before numerous fatigue failures occurred simultaneously. Too bad the book submission was turned in before this occurred. We actually had a practice bot that year that suffered the same fate after about 10 hours of practice (10 hours of drive time is actually quite a bit of driving). FRC seasons were typically around 60 matches for Team 33 which equates to around 3-5 hours of drive time (if you include event practices and Auto-mode tuning)

2006 - Functional, but requires significant warm-up period to get the belt drive system working. Also contains numerous fatigure fractures throught the system. It would likely self destruct if an attempt was made to compete in the 2006 game.
2005 - Would require new arm counterbalance bungee and then would be functional.
2004 - haven't seen it operate since 2006. If there was a stair climbing challenge, we would likely revive it.
2003 - One of our mentors loves to revive this one each year because it does a really cool death spiral dance.
2002 - Haven't seen this operate since I was helping out with 249. We contemplated reviving it this year as it had its own trailer mode when it docked with the playing pieces that year.
2001 - I know it is there, but it looks foreign to what I know as a 33 bot.

Earlier bots were dismantled. They are now pictures and memories.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

The more recent ones we use for robot demonstrations but any robot older then 06 just sits on shelves at J&J. We will occasionally bring them out and dust them off to show the new members what we have done in the past. It makes for a really nice photo to line up all the robots that the team has made since 2000.

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

So far we have been pretty determined to keep all our bots together and functional. It is nice to have them all running for demos and presentations. They each represent a lot of effort and history and are more valuable in tact than the value of any part that might be scavanged from them. The few times we have borrowed something from them we have replaced it.

Dantvman27 19-05-2009 20:21

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

Kept for deminstrations and out of season tournaments, then used for education of new team members before finally scrapping for usable parts and then anyone that has "emotional attachment" to a part of the robot that is no longer usable is alloud to keep it,

i have our revolver from Aim High and our drive train from overdrive

Reason for scrapping is due to no storage space and attempt to keep budget down but mostly no storage space :-(

Re: What do you guys do with your old robots?

The Firebirds (433) have a program called DYR (donate your robot) for old robots.
A few years ago we adopted a school in Ghana, Africa, and we assisted them in forming the first FIRST team in Africa.
We used to bring them over here for build and competition season, but now try to bring robotics to them.
Over the past two years we have collected and shipped enough parts for the Ghanaian students to build three robots.
However, our goal is to be able to expand the program to other surrounding schools.
This is where you come in:
We are collecting old robots, parts, tools, control panels, etc for another shipment.
PM me if your team has anything they want to donate.

Thank you so much:)
