So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
There've been some music threads, but all devoted to specific genres. I figured it was time for one massive album thread for the ages. (No, kids, the album is not dead.)
Among my recent listens: Gnarls Barkley: The Odd Couple I'm not as big on it as I was about St. Elsewhere, but it's still good. The Odd Couple doesn't seem to have as much diversity of sound or as many tracks that stay in your head for days following. (Who can still sing "Crazy"? Anyone? Bueller?) Lauryn Hill: MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 I've been a Lauryn Hill fan since I first listened to The Fugees. This two-disc album (recorded in 2001) shares little with her Fugees work (or even that heard on The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill), but the stripped-down, honest performance carries even through the numerous lengthy interludes. Emily Jane White: Dark Undercoat One of my later discoveries while still a DJ at WUSC-FM, it's proof that just because something is common (female singer-songwriter) doesn't mean it can't be good. The album is a little darker than my usual listening, but not too dark that I can't put it on during a roadtrip. Common: Like Water for Chocolate Common has always been one of the best lyricists in hip-hop, something that the mainstream only started to notice with this album. Largely devoid of guest emcees, Common's lyrics shine alongside some of the decade's best production. Classic. Alchemist: 1st Infantry Alchemist was another discovery of mine at WUSC, back when "Hold You Down" was in our rotation (and on vinyl to boot!) my freshman year. The album is gritty, both in production and lyrics (the latter of which trend toward the D-Block roster). It was the unofficial soundtrack to the summer of 2005 for me, tempered by the need to keep the volume down when I was working at camp. (1st Infantry is not for the kiddies.) What have you listened to lately? |

Minutes to Midnight- Linkin Park- almost hated the culmination of their recent songs and I love Linkin Park's old songs

I'm an mp3 player user as well, but the closest I've got to an album is:
Final Fantasy IX Soundtrack. That's right. :D http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d1...g?t=1215236244 (why don't my image tags ever work?) |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
When It Falls - Zero 7 - I'm not exactly sure why, but I do enjoy their music. When It Falls is my favorite album, with Simple Things in a close second. Different music for different situations, though. Last year, I worked out what kind of music would be best to listen to while doing different things, and music by Zero 7 ended up as music for the very late night.

To that end, I just dusted off "Ruff Draft" by the late great J Dilla. I've yet to hear a particularly bad beat from him--always unique, always with that depth to the production that you can't often find on the radio. (I also recommend Donuts, a full-length effort of his that has been sampled by some pretty big names after his death.) |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Last one I listened to was a Jimmy Buffet DVD (does that count?)... It was a Changes in Latitude, Changes in Attitude kind of weekend, you know? :)
Also on the laptop iTunes library that I started listening to was Carole King's Tapestry. Classic. |

AC/DC- Back in Black
|
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Deuces Wild by B.B. King
Great tracks with all duets with famous artists, although the rap attempt with Heavy D is a stretch. I like "Dangerous Mood" with Joe Cocker the best and "Baby I Love You" with Bonnie Rait as a close second. Both BB and Bonnie are high on my list of greats, having worked with both on several shows over the years. |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
On the commute today, I dusted off Organix by The Roots. It's their first album, and perhaps the best example of their jazz-based sound heard on the infinitely-easier-to-find Illadelph Halflife and Do You Want More?!!!??!. Even if you're not a fan of hip-hop (but you are a fan of jazz), it's probably worth trying to find.
(To that end, where did Leonard parts one to five go?) |

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Last actual album I listened to (you know big round and black with little grooves) would have to be:
Dark Passion Play by Nightwish. Amazing album but a little expensive on vinyl, lucky for me, my roommate wanted to get the cover sighed. Point of No Return by Kansas. Great album, the cover art is unbelievable, and it cost a whole dollar used. If you want to say album on a CD, I would say: The Devil's Bris by Voltaire. One of the best albums I've ever listened to, some really good songs musically and the others are really fun. Blackfiel II by Blackfield. Perhaps a bit depressing but still great. |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Here's the most recent albums that I've listened all the way through while at work.
Barenaked Ladies - Stunt This is a great album, without a doubt. The only way BNL could have improved this album was "If I Had a Million Dollars" was on this CD. The Fratellis - Costello Music I randomly found them while listening to Virgin's Radio Xtreme alternative rock radio station two years ago online. O.A.R. - Any Time Now (Live) Great album, especially with "It Was a Crazy Game of Poker", "About an Hour Ago", "Black Rock" and "City on Down". Streetlight Manifesto - Keasbey Nights Another solid album. Reel Big Fish - Cheer Up! It's Reel Big Fish, it's just a great album. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon This is one album, which you have to listen to all the way through. No exceptions, otherwise songs just kind of end abruptly... |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Listening to the album Rust in Peace by Megadeth

The Bedlam in Goliath by The Mars Volta (Progressive Rock, Experimental) The Pick of Destiny by Tenacious D (No genre can contain The D) Pablo Honey by Radiohead (Alternative Rock?) Technical Difficulties by Racer X (80s Shred Rock) these are some of my recent listens, mostly on the way home from IRI. :D |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Today on the drive: Do You Want More?!!!??! by The Roots. Even as Organix has made inroads on the title, this one remains my favorite album by The Roots. You've got songs all over the map (be honest, would you expect "Distortion To Static" and "Silent Treatment" on the same album?), but they all work. If you're looking to atone for cranking that Soulja Boy one too many times, you could do far worse than to start with this album.

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
On the commute to work yesterday: Be by Common. If it's not the best hip-hop album of this decade, it's in the top five.
On the commute from work yesterday: The Cool by Lupe Fiasco. A rare album (for any genre) where there isn't a single lousy track on the album. His first album, Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor, was a great album even if it wasn't the lightest one in history, and The Cool tends to be heavier (and better) still. This would be another contender for the top-five list. |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
I seem to be on a three-song kick. Baba Yetu from the game CivilizationIV, and Time of Season by The Zombies, and finally One by Metallica. It's weird, but I enjoy them.

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Today was a mashup kind of day.
On the drive to work: Gnarls Biggie by Sound Advice. Gnarls Barkley is serious business. The Notorious B.I.G. is serious business. Put them together....and you kinda get serious business. On the drive home: The Grey Album by DJ Danger Mouse. The standard by which I measure all mashup albums. The album works on every level I can find--it's not just picking two songs and sticking them together for the heck of it, but intricate sampling with a bit of forethought as to the songs. ("Mother Nature's Son" being sampled on "December 4th", for example, or "Encore" being backed by "Glass Onion".) Simply a great album. |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Okay, okay, thread revival and double-post. Still, I've been doing a lot of listening this week.
Monday on the drive, I listened to Linkin Park's Reanimation. I probably hadn't listened to it the whole way through in ages. (iTunes seems to indicate February of '07.) It was a frequent resident of my old Civic's CD player back in high school, and you have to hold onto old albums. Tuesday, I was in a generally lousy mood for reasons beyond the scope of this thread. I wound up settling on William Shatner's 2004 album Has Been. Those unfamiliar may be scratching their heads, but it's really a spectacular album. (For the uninitiated, YouTube provides this and this.) It doesn't work as a ringtone, but nobody said music was supposed to. Buy this album. I've also found myself liking The Odd Couple more and more. Perhaps it's a case of the week influencing my mood for the more soulful album over St. Elsewhere, which is ridiculously catchy pop. (I'm not saying the former doesn't have it, but it matches me better at the moment.) This morning, I had a strange craving to listen to Will Smith's Willennium. (It was $2 in the used CD bin.) My thumb didn't stop in time on the iPod, so instead my drive (and search for sub-$4 gas) was backed with the cast recording from Wicked, another album I'd allowed to collect some dust of late. (If you ever get a chance to see it, do. I've been fortunate to see it twice on Broadway--from the very front row and the very back row, no joke--and it was amazing in both cases. But back to albums.) On the way back, I started Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. A classic, one I'll continue working at on the drive to get my car serviced tomorrow. |

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Thom Yorke "The Eraser"- Thom Yorke, whom you might know as the singer and rythm guitarist of Radiohead, has recently become one of my favorite musicians. I find myself comparing the sound on this album a lot to In Rainbows from Radiohead with some of the programmed beats and the lighter vocal melodies. Highlights are definitely the songs Black Swan, and my favorite Atoms for Peace.
The Essential Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble-. I've been a pretty casual fan of Stevie and the blues genre in general, listening occasionally, but never really getting that into it, but when I found this CD for $10, at 33 tracks, I couldn't pass it up. I can now without a doubt call myself a fan of Stevie's expressive gutiar playing as well as his vocals. It was quite the value, but it is definitely quality over quantity. |

I'm busy ripping from a Motown Classics Gold album but I'm very disappointed in the quality of the album. It sound kind of tinny and you can tell it's cheaply made because the track listing isn't coming up on iTunes.

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Today: Deadringer by RJD2. RJ has gone pop/rock since, but his hip-hop production is second to none. (Any Mad Men fans out there? Yup, the theme music was one of his instrumentals.)
Earlier: One Day It'll All Make Sense by Common. You've heard me gush enough about Common; if you enjoyed Like Water For Chocolate, you'll like this. Earlier Still: Kill the Moonlight by Spoon. I was turned onto this one by a friend of mine who found it sitting in the WUSC music library. Not a bad cut on the album. |

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Today on the drive: The College Dropout by Kanye West, the consensus best album of 2004. Classic.
Recent plays: The Love Below by OutKast (well, Andre 3000; call it how you want). This, along with Speakerboxxx, would qualify as the consensus best album of 2003. Music from the Motion Picture Juno - a find of my girlfriend. Back to Black by Amy Winehouse - a find of my brother. The Mouse and the Mask by DANGERDOOM - Danger Mouse has been a favorite of mine for some time. MF DOOM (and his various other aliases) is enjoyable in the right context; put them together with some Adult Swim cameos, and the result is pretty epic. |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Back in Black - AC/DC
Had to have something to keep me awake today. At least working from home there is no one else around to complain about the volume (or the selection). Usually I just turn on XM so I don't have to listen to a bunch of commercials and idiots talking. |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Just finished listening to yet another kick-butt (Canadian) rock album:

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Today at work, I was able to get about halfway through Metallica's S&M album, done live with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. One of my favorites, I must say.
Also recently played was Jay-Z's The Blueprint and Kingdom Come. Blueprint is a classic, with some of the best delivery and production of his career (see also: Takeover, Heart of the City (Ain't No Love), Hola Hovito, Izzo (H.O.V.A.), Renegade, Never Change...just about every song on the album, to be honest). Kingdom Come is a little more mixed, but there are still some solid tracks to be had (Oh My God, Kingdom Come, Lost Ones, Show Me What You Got, 30 Something, Hollywood). |

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
This afternoon, I had an extended commute home*. It gave me just about enough time to partake in Sermon From Bethlehem by Rev. Billy C. Wirtz. Wirtz's particular flavor of piano blues leans toward various mixtures of spirituality, risqué humor, Southern living and professional wrestling. (Can you tell he was born about an hour from here in Aiken, SC?) The result is entirely inappropriate to play around impressionable youth straight through, but definitely my favorite of his works.
*My fellow South Carolinians, please learn how to drive in the rain already. Love, Billfred |

I occasionally listen to Carlos Jean, I enjoy my Cat Stevens, Crosby/Stills/Nash/Young, Cherish the Ladies, Gershwin, Elton John, Lou bega, Royksopp, Metallica, Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Oh, and I LOVE theme songs... I have the star wars theme (all movements, a disco version, and an a capella version), the halo themes/songs, Fifth Element, Pirates of the Carribbean (fans of all three themes but only the first and third movies), The Last Starfighter, Indiana Jones (especially the beginning of the theme to temple of doom), James Bond themes, and I LOVE the credit music to The Mummy Returns. And, I have a confession to make. Occasionally I just find myself playing with the freq. generator my laptop making standing waves in a cup of water sitting in front of my subwoofer... -q |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Today's commute: the cast recording from Monty Python's Spamalot. If you are mature enough for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you're covered; if your parents have sheltered you from the latter, avoid the former.
That said, I've seen it twice (once on Broadway from standing room, once with the traveling production which wasn't as well-done, but at least I could sit down), and I'd recommend it. |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Actually not listening to any recorded music...
my neighbors the Gove Street Back Yard Band are having a jam session... they pretty good... southern rock, hard country, kinda Montgomery Gentry playing with the Charlie Daniels Band. Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Today, as I shot my way through about nine cars (and re-realized why I like the Buick Lucerne), I was listening to the X-Ecutioners' Built From Scratch. I'm not usually a turntablism kind of guy, but their particular style works for me.
Once that ran out, I started on Wyclef Jean's The Ecleftic: 2 Sides II a Book. The follow-up to The Carnival, it's more straightforward hip-hop (well, by Wyclef's standards anyway). Regardless, it's worth finding...but if you don't have the cash right now to dig through the used CD bin, well... |

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Marty Friedman- Scenes
Some of you may know him as a fromer member of Megadeth, most famous in my opinion from the Rust in Peace album and songs like Holy Wars, Hangar 18, and Tornado of Souls. In his post-Megadeth career, Marty Friedman has released several solo albums, which are departures from his work with Megadeth. Full of melody, expression, and marty's awesome songwriting abilities, Scenes is probably my favorite solo album of his, at least at this moment. This album also has plenty of technicality and shredding to it as well, so don't think it's all soft melodies. Also, if you enjoy Marty's shreddier side of his playing, check out Cacophony, a band that he and Jason Becker were in. Not a lot of... let's say substance... but lots and lots of shredding. |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Along the drive to and from TNT:
Everything You Want by Vertical Horizon (why did I like this ten years ago?) Ego Trippin' by Snoop Dogg (not his best, I think) American Gangster by Jay-Z (epic) Gnarls Biggie by Sound Advice (good stuff) MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 by Lauryn Hill (highly underrated) St. Elsewhere by Gnarls Barkley (still good, even if you're tired of "Crazy") The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill (also great stuff) There were more, but I don't remember all of them. |

Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
I was going to post a thread like this after the Metalheads thread got my music mind on track, but why not revive this very similar one I found with the Search function?
None of these are particularly new, I've just actually gotten into music since college. Does It Offend You, Yeah? - You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into - I was looking for "loud electronic rock" and stumbled upon this inspired little album. Kind of Daft Punk like in the sounds it uses, but more... screaming. The Postal Service - Give Up - I'm about 7 years behind, but I still like electronic indie pop, and you still can't beat The Postal Service. Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs - ...or Ben Gibbard in general. Emotion without emo. :) |
Re: So...What Album Did You Just Listen To?
Speaking of the metalheads thread, it's time to put some decent music in this thread.
I've been reliving the glory days of Slayer with Reign in Blood and Seasons in the Abyss, Meshuggah's obZen has also been working into the rotation, Dancers to a Discordant System is now competing with Bleed for my 'Best Track' award. |

RoseJ - Got enough Green Day?
I've been listening to a lot more radio than CDs/iPod lately, so I haven't listened to a lot of complete albums, but the most recent two have been Lovesick Electric, by Hot Chelle Rae, and Bad Vein's self-titled album. Both were because I was handed the demo CDs in journalism the other day and was asked to write reviews, and I ended up liking both bands a lot. |
