IRI Fundraiser - Kiss the Pig contest

I'm pleased as pork to announce a new fundraiser at the 2008 IRI.

Kiss the Pig Contest

Here is how it will work:

There will be a table, near the silent auction area in the main gym. This table will have 6-8 buckets placed on it. Each bucket will have a name and picture of a kissing contestant*. The dollar amounts of each bucket will be announced right before alliance selection for the elimination rounds. The contestant with the most money in their bucket at the time of when the awards begin will have the honor of kissing a 5-week-old female pig.

* - Contestants will need to agree to this (kissing the pig if their bucket has the most money in it) before IRI begins. I will be sending out emails this week, asking key mentors if they accept the honor of being a contestant. Contestants are FIRST mentors only.

If anyone wants to nominate a mentor, they can post the recommendation in this thread or simply PM me.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will be combined with our annual Silent Auction fundraiser. This year's beneficiaries are the Red Cross flood relief for Indiana, and American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Howard County, Indiana.

As I receive confirmations back from invited contestants, I will post their names in this thread.

Andy B.

I love this idea, nomination sent.

Is it Kosher? :D

I say it should also be done during the Championship with people like Dean, Woody, Dave and George W. the father :D

Wow. I'm constantly amazed at how much the midwestern folks of FIRST step it up in terms of everything.

This is no exception.

Looking forward to checking out this extra event while I'm at IRI for my first time ever!! w000000!!!!

(Btw, is there a schedule of times listed anywhere for all these extra events happening (ie: other than official competition schedules??)

The sex of the animal really makes a difference?

For that matter, is a 5-week-old pig of sufficient age, or is this harrassment?

And did you clear it with PETA? (And I don't mean People Eating Tasty Animals)

What if she tells the rest of the pigs?

Just a little promo idea here -
all you awesome pig-kissin' mentors out there - you should spread the word that you are the best pig-kissin' mentor at IRI and to fill that bucket to overflowing.

With money, nothing else.

Keep on keeping on, kiss that wee little piglet. (uh, 1902 - you've got some competition headed your way!)

IRI IRI IRI IRI

I can't hear you!!!

Re: IRI Fundraiser - Kiss the Pig contest

The bodily location of the kiss has not yet been defined.

I recommend you remove this loophole lest the "winning" mentor be able to get away with kissing the pig's forehead or some other less disgusting location.

I also recommend assigning a minimum time duration for the kiss, to be verified by stopwatch at the event. If the winner fails to meet the criteria of an official kiss, creme pies and/or a water hose could be on hand to discipline them for their non-compliance......

On the mouth for a minimum of 10 seconds? And it better be convincing?.......LOL :D :P

Man I miss Indiana. Throw in a cow pie bingo sheet, and you have main entertainment for Pulaski County Tuesday night 4-H fair.

Nicely done. I do believe that there needs to be a youtube video of the winner....

I anticipate the contestents shoveling 10's and 20's into other buckets to keep themselves in a 'losing' position.

Andy,
Dottie is pretty sure this is illegal in most states, in Illinois at least. I am sure the rest of the country will definetely be watching the webcast.

First off- Will this be webcast? (Ooh, I hope so :D)

If so, even if not, I'd like to see Karthik and Paul Copioli to be considered. I feel that the (attending) world champions should get a little more of a (*ahem*) "reward" for their achievement.

Ooh, please let this be webcast...

I'm sure your IRI pig will be a cutie and just fine to lock lips with!
I'm a little cautious these days. Had a not-fun bout of probable salmonella last month. Looks like those pesky jalapenos might have been the culprit.

You might want to change that plan.

I'm sure the pig would prefer that you disinfect the human before the kiss rather than trying to clean up the poor pig after the kiss.

You have this all wrong. I think it should be you being nominated. You helped develop the rules that so many people enjoyed this year. A little pay back might be in order by many. I am sure a few teams will want get back for G22 or G42 penalties that were called against them Mr. Head Ref.

Will Aidan be there? It says so on his "attending" profile.

There will be at least 2 others of the GDC who will be in attendance. One has already been nominated.

I'm happy to announce this lovely list of pig-kissing candidates:

Jane Young
Heidi Foster
Paul Copioli
Steve Florence
Tim Baird
Karthik Kanagasabapathy

Billfred Leverette
Travis Hoffman

I'm working on 1 or 2 more.

Plus... we decided to add a tweak to the rules: the person with the least amount of money in their bucket has to hold the pig while the winner kisses it.

Jane Young
Heidi Foster

Tim Baird
Karthik Kanagasabapathy
JVN
Billfred Leverette
Travis Hoffman

We had a mess-o nominations. Thank you all for throwing names into the trough. Not all were invited to participate. We were aiming for 6-7, but ended up with 12. That is plenty. Unfortunately, some invited candidates were chicken.

Re: IRI Fundraiser - Kiss the Pig contest

Is there a "write-in" bucket for Dave Lavery?....

So....let the campaigning begin!

First of all, it seems almost inevitable that one of the pictures taken of the *special* moment of pig-human interaction is almost guaranteed to get into one of Billfred's Caption Contests. Now who REALLY wants to have yet another caption photo featuring Copioli, JVN, or Karthik? Wouldn't you rather have a shot at the guy who mercilessly lampoons subjects with his award-winning captions week after week? Wouldn't you like to finally get back at yours truly? If you've always wished you had a chance to return the favor, you will see to it that I "win" this contest by filling up my bucket, thus ensuring my ultimate humiliation.

On the other hand, if you feel some other individual is more worthy of this honour than I (of course you do!), you will do your best to overflow those other 11 buckets. To do my part, I'd like to find a way to get the CD community NOT attending the IRI involved in the voting. I think I can do more damage/raise more total money if I facilitate this "ballot-stuffing" for my fellow candidates.....

Soooooooooo...PM me about my PayPal advance CD fundraising campaign - for the other candidates.... Let me know which campaign you wish to donate toward and how much - $5 USD minimum per candidate. Operators are standing by. Serious inquiries only.

Travis,

Way ahead of you, :)

Dave Stevens and I each already dropped a twenty dollar bill into an envelope this AM and sent them on their way to one Mr Jeff Smith there in Indianapolis.

With a little help from his friends, Jeff intends to run for you lucky IRI guests, the fun, 6-player, Overdrive simulation (aka 5thGear) that was in the Lockheed Martin exhibit in the NASA/VCU Regional's Technology Row. (Here is a photo
The 2008 NASA/VCU FRC Regional 5thGear World Champions:))

Dave and I invited Jeff to keep track of the alliance that racks up the highest 5thGear score during IRI, and to then bestow upon them the honor and privilege of depositing our $40 of mentor money into the bucket of the nominee that, in their estimation, promises to be the best passionate porcine pucker practitioner.

Until that winning alliance is announced and the money deposited, no one is safely perched in the pleasantly prestigious penultimate position if they aren't at least $40.01 behind the leader :)

Blake (I wish I could be there) Ross

Re: IRI Fundraiser - Kiss the Pig contest

Since Travis brought the subject up, I went back and calculated the combined scores across all five years of the caption contest for the contestants. In no particular order:

Steve Shade: Never entered
Amanda Morrison: 57 + 34 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 91 career points
Dr. Aidan Browne: Never entered
Jane Young: 0 + 22 + 111 + 134 + 2 = 269 career points
Heidi Foster: 160 + 137 + 111 + 10 + 0 = 418 career points
Paul Copioli: Never entered
Steve Florence: Never entered
Tim Baird: Never entered
Karthik Kanagasabapathy: Never entered
JVN: 54 + 12 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 66 career points
Billfred Leverette: Never entered (obviously)
Travis Hoffman: 151 + 138 + 80 + 140 + 1 = 510 career points

I'll further note that Travis has some twenty-two burn awards from over the years. (Heidi has a relatively miniscule eleven.)

One more friendly reminder: Don't shoot the messenger!

(One other thing for the stat nerds: EddieMcD slots between Travis and Heidi on the all-time list with 429 points and eighteen burn awards. Just to give you a gauge and all.)

Why restrict it just to the CD community? I think I'm gonna take up a collection here at IFI. I'm sure many of his co-workers here in Greenville, TX want to see photos of JVN kissing a pig. :-D

Now... normally I'm a firm believer in "don't shoot the messenger," however, in this case, the messenger is also the reason these points even exist... Come on, everyone, you do the math: 1 + 1 usually equals 2 but in this case 1 + 1 = Billfred.

Hmmm... with all these impressive names on the list, I think there will be a good chance I'll be holding the pig... I better get practicing... how much did you say the pig weighed? One of my cats weighs 12 pounds and she squirms a lot when you pick her up... here kitty, kitty, kitty...

Yay!!! Since Steve won't campaign for himself, I think I'll have to take it upon myself to be his official fundraiser :D. I think he might just be the contestant who would turn the brightest color of red if he happened to win and that is a sight to see.

Plus he's a newlywed, 7 months and counting. This may be his only opportunity to kiss another female (with the permision of his wife no less) ever again. Someone's gotta feel bad for him and throw some money in the direction of his basket.

Anne,
Don't worry I think that Steve is a most deserving candidate and will see some funds fly his way. For those teams in the Chesapeake area don't you remember when all those bad calls happen in 2006 and 2007. Well that wasn't because of the rules of the game it was because of steve shade. well not actually but heck if you are still frustrated by the results of those events please donate your money to getting back at the refs.

Personally I think this is a great idea because it kills to birds with one stone. If Steve kisses the pig then Anne will get the residual pig germs also.

Ok, since Steve is a newlywed, that means he has plenty of Pucker Power.
So, I'm going to Share-A-Blonde-Moment-with-Jane - with Steve...

Here goes:

Give P's A Chance -
Pucker Power For The Piggie

Word on the street is that the JVN collection fund has already had at least one $100 donation. It sounds like the other fundraising campaigns need to heat up if you want to see your favourite (or least favourite) contestant win!

If Karthik wins, do we have any Canadian bacon on hand, or are we letting him kiss an American pig?

Anyone is welcome to contact me if they'd also like to contribute to Steve's fund.

And this isn't limited to Maryland teams. Most definately, if your vote is a vote of frustration for a bad ref call anytime, anywhere, then Steve Shade is definately where you want to put your money!

And the refs wouldn't have to make those calls if the GDC didn't give them situations to make them in... Dr. Aidan Browne is where you want to put your money in that case. (Lavery would have gotten it, but he's not in there... I say next year's game is called Catch Dave Lavery.)

Though I wouldn't mind seeing Copioli win. He is the first 2-time champion other than Beatty... And he's got a WFA... (OK, so I'm hoping for a few prophecy points in the caption contest...)

It's easy to tell how much my wife loves me here, she signs me up for this and then doesn't defend me :).

Aidan, I believe I was on your field when I was a rookie ref. The Chief Referee continued letting me ref, so I either must have been doing something right and making excellent calls, or maybe the chief referee needs to better teach his minions :D I guess you're admitting that all the bad calls are your fault. So everyone show Aidan the Money!

Don't look now, but JVN has some competition - chalk up a $200+ donation from an anonymous donor I will have the great pleasure of dropping in one of the other contestants' buckets Saturday morning. Which one will it be??? :D

Now, I must ask, who will top that donation? I know you have it in you.

Anyone else who can't make it to IRI who wishes to donate but doesn't already have someone going to the event to get their money into a bucket, I can receive your donations through Friday at midnight. PayPal or personal check are two viable options - the PayPal method worked well today. PM me if interested. I'll even accept donations for my bucket, although with all these far more worthy candidates out there, why would you ever want to do that?????

I have these two bids from dependable friends who can't attend IRI:

$50 for Jane Young
$250 for Paul Copioli

It's good to see people step up.

I'm picking up the pig tomorrow in Monticello (my step-father's farm). It will be housed at a veterinarian's location on Thursday and Friday. Then, around lunchtime on Saturday, it will join the party at LNHS.

*sigh*... somehow it just doesn't seem fair that I get punished because of all of Steve's bad calls... that's crossing the line! I mean why am I getting punished because my collegue crossed a line (which I know he didn't intend to cross)? It just doesn't seem fair! :ahh:

So, not being from the midwest, what does one wear to their first pig kissing? I mean, I wouldn't want to be disrespectful to the pig.

Pink. If you don't want to scare the pig with your human-ness, you wear pink. Curly tail and ears are optional.

It's not a Florida pig.

And the SPCA says the pig has to remain at least 100 feet from 1902 at all times (for obvious reasons).

Heidi

It's so nice that a guy like Aidan who normally sees things in black and white, is going to think pink. There could be at least 233 people who will appreciate this effort.

My shirt is sort of salmon-y, wonder if that will confuse the little pig. It could be a bad call.

Gary, that might not be a bad idea, 1902 will teach Oscar to fly and we'll have a flying weiner, I mean, pig, on our hands. Wonder if Andy knows how to stop a flying pig.

Pigs don't need wings to fly...and to stop it...well...what goes up must come down...

As for the voting, I think it would be a nice (late) birthday present for Karthik if he won...

I thought you did a great job although there were some sad little squeals heard.
Everyone in the stands said, "aw".

--
At one point I looked in my bucket and there was a nickel and three pennies. I was very proud. :)

Great fundraiser, great causes!

There were plenty of photos taken. The little piggie looked just like Babe. Pink.
Oh, and Koko Ed kept watch (among others) over the pig. Rather like a mother hen.

Yeah but I took very bad care of Wilbur (sorry Exploding Bacon).
The piglet was one very cute little critter.

For those who weren't there, the pig was absolutely terrified.

It must have thought it was about to be slaughtered, it was squealing so badly.

It squealed badly when Andy took it out to be photographed with Exploding Bacon.
Our school Wilson Magnet used to have the previous principal kiss a pig during pep rally but they stopped doing it because the pig was just scared.

As I remember it, the pig was more than a little perturbed when the time came until she caught sight of Aidan and especially Paul. As the big moment approached I thought she was actually smiling when Paul came close. Go figure!

Little Oscar was fine once Victoria got hold of him. Thanks for letting Bacon get a pic with the pig......it just made sense for a team picture.
