I was originally signed up, but decided to back up because it was simply too much work. I want to do a FF, but having a draft every night is simply too much work. Also, I know on average 15 teams per regional so ranking every team, for me atleast, seemed kinda like a waste. I may get one team I know, but after that it would basically be random and thus my chances of winning would be almost based on chance. I know it was touched on earlier, but I find the way it is run now very confusing and unorganized. I still haven't found the rules and how points are decided. I think this may be a good system, but there are just too many regionals. With the amount of regionals increasing, I think this system will eventually be nearly impossible.

If you want to know the rules, all you have to do is ask. We don't care how big the lists are, just that they are present. (I know I'll take someone saying "Just give me random teams" as a list--the point is to show that you are still an active participant.) Points are awarded according to the FF standard system--2 points for a win, 1 for a tie, -2 for a loss, anywhere between 2 and 42 points for an award, depending on award; seeding has a slightly different range.

It will eventually be nearly impossible for humans to run this. There is a FF addition to CD in the works, but it's been that way for a while now. There is another system in the works as well.

I don't know if your system would work. I do know I wouldn't want to run it. However, as has been previously noted, if you don't like the current Season Long, make your own Season Long with your own rules and have fun.

You do realize that research for the list is not hard, I chugged out all 40 or 50 something over thanksgiving break. Also you will not eliminate someone getting a rookie team they do not know, you still get someone at the bottom. I suggest you actually try and you will find this is not bad.

This is simply one variation of FF, and it is most notably the one that takes the largest time dedication and most skill (especially since the rules have been revised since last year). It is, however, not the only league or the only way to run the game.

This is the only one that is run before the season actually begins, you can expect to see many the week before each regional. This is when more information is known for each team, and you can select which regional in which you would like to participate.

It is not the only form of scoring, the commissioner of the draft puts their own weights on awards.

Other variations to FF:
  • Pick a limited number of teams for the entire season
  • Pick teams for one regional
  • "Free for all" style, where you post what three teams you want on a first come first serve basis, and no one else can pick the same combo.
  • "Week long" where you are picking 2 teams for all regionals of that week at the same time

I enjoy participating in this style. It forces me to learn more about every team and every regional, and I know I am playing against some of the most dedicated and most informed scouters in all of FIRST. I believe this draft is being VERY well run and am stunned by its efficiency when there are only 2 people doing the entire thing. Are there mistakes? Sure, it is done by humans by hand. The more active a player is, the better one can help minimize mistakes. This is simply the League Ed started, chooses to run, by his rules. I signed up to play because I agree to those rules.

If I have time during the competition season, I may start a different "week long" league by my own rules, and perhaps recruit some help. If one would like to play by different rules, I encourage them to start his or her own league as well, heck I'll probably play if you do.

Now that is out of the way, it couldn't hurt to have this on page 17

Again, I'm not saying this system is bad. I'm saying that you can get similar experence or enjoyment factor with a different system where you only pick 20 teams (opposed 150 or so). I also think more people will join if they only have to pick 20 teams. Maybe my proposal better for the causual fan, who doesn't want to create 50 lists or doesn't have the time, opposed to the hard-core fan. I just think this current system is too daunting and scares too many people, who probably would enjoy FF, away.

And again I'm saying if people want to do it then they're free to do it. Just because I'm not doing it doesn't mean it's not going to happen, it just means I'm not interested in doing it.

This is about teams with registration later than the draft for a particular regional.

I think that in those cases, a first come first get base isn't quite fair.

Idea: go according to the draft, and only if all the people before a selected choice agree, it may go. This way, the draft remains even, though it's a lot of work, which i am willing to take.

Ed and Eric, it's your call.

Re: [FF]: 2009 Season Long FF

I disagree, it should not be more work on the drafters if a team joins after the deadline. First come first serve treats everyone fairly because we can all look to see if a new team has joined. Any team that joins after the deadline but before the draft, like right now for the Waterloo Regional, should still be part of the draft.

I think first come first served is more than fair.
just make a point to check every once in a while to see if any new teams have joined any regionals, that's all.
Why would you think it's not fair?

Btw, I may have missed this discussion (or forgotten) from the beginning, but what was the reason for having the lists all picked before Kickoff?
Just curious.

Because we all have more important things to do during build season.

And it's more fun to do it off of previous rankings without any input of the mew game or any team's status. The only thing that could make it better is if the lists got locked January 2nd.

That would suck if it got locked. lol
I need to go back & trade on some picks on nights I missed on one of these days.

Has Stephi Rae made a pick yet or is he booted?

Koko Ed 20-12-2008 20:08

Re: [FF]: 2009 Season Long FF

Stephi Rae has been dropped from the league due to chronic absenteeism.
Her picks are on a first come first served basis.
