Re: pic: How to scare engineers
We went there last year and could not overcome the engineer's grasp of probability.....so we stayed off the rides. But we did have fun looking at the structures.

Re: pic: How to scare engineers
Such things scare us mere mortals as well. That's why I stay off of things like that.

Re: pic: How to scare engineers
Is Andy wearing a Star Trek shirt?

I might be wrong but I think that's what it is. The men's were this light blue color, the women's were a light aqua. It was the judges' shirt. That looks like a hair raising adventure. |
Re: pic: How to scare engineers
Is it that you don't trust magnetism, Andy, or is that you don't trust the bolts holding the magnets in place? :)

Re: pic: How to scare engineers
This should be renamed how to scare anybody. Did you guys go on any of the other rides?
|
Re: pic: How to scare engineers
btw, what was Andy doing in Vegas so recently? My son and I were there Saturday night on our way back from Speed Week at Bonneville.

Re: pic: How to scare engineers
I'm sure if you think that's too scary, then you won't be trying this one any time soon:
http://www.extremeworld.com/attractions/terminal%5Fvelocity/ Think bungee jumping, but without the cord. :D Since I've already done bungee jumping, this one is def. on on my to-do list. Someday... Now just to figure out how & when to make it to Wisconsin. Oh, the X-Scream is also on my list. Yeah, I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie. Edit: And.. Ahahahhahaha! Nice Sputnik shirt.woot.com shirt there! |

The X Scream, & Terminal Velocity was shown, as well as some others, like Kingda-Ka from Six Flags over NJ. I tried going on Kingda-Ka, but it was closed due to some bad weather the day I was there. |

Dave I am sure at some point in your life you will look back and be sad that you never visited the star trek experience, as it is closing for good next week. And no, those pictures of me in the enterprise captains chair will never make it to chiefdelphi. |
Re: pic: How to scare engineers
The x scream has been stuck twice hanging over the side of the stratosphere here in vegas a couple of times. The only reason i will not go on the ride...

The last time I was in Las Vegas, I...um...experienced the Star Trek Experience with a party of Klingon language enthusaists. About half of the group had dressed the part, complete with forehead ridges. The reactions of a couple of the cast members when we came into view were nearly worth the price of admission all by themselves. And the moment when the voice on the intercom explains and apologizes for the rough ride ("The Klingons got in a few good shots") was amazing, as we all reacted spontaneously with cheers and gestures of triumph. It couldn't have been more perfect if we had rehearsed it. Our "escort" almost fell to the floor laughing. |

Re: pic: How to scare engineers
if you really want to scare them drop a handful of chopped up bolts in the bottom of the ride just before they get in dont "NOTICE THEM " until the restraining bar is down and the ride is starting to move.
(DON'T ACTUALLY TRY THAT- GOD KNOWS WHAT THEY MIGHT FOUL UP) |

On a related note...it was a pleasure to share a beverage or two with you guys last Friday, and a thousand thanks, Andy, for hand delivering the beta test plaction wheels! And all we had to do was offer you an opportunity to see Greg pee his pants...but now we hear it was the other way around???
This thread reveals just a small subset of the many great reasons to come out to our regional, and Team 987 welcomes everyone to "try their luck" at our 5th regional...;) |
Re: pic: How to scare engineers
Ah, so that's what it's been all my life - that rational knowledge of the way welds break, fasteners fail with cyclic loading, strength of materials, faulty slide rules, and so on. And, that's from an electrical guy...
There are SO many ways to kill yourself, and maybe even have fun doing it, that a roller coaster (one nightmare) atop a tall building (another nightmare - I have several) would simply make me pass out before anything could happen. Quote:

Re: pic: How to scare engineers
My wife and I were in Vegas a few years back. We rode the roller coaster at the top of the Stratosphere. What a ride :ahh: I had no intention of going on the ones that put you over the edge of the Sphere.
We also did the ST experience. There was a ST convention going on thet we didn't know about :( We would have loved to bring our uniforms with us (See WAI) I loved the announcement when you arrived at the hotel on the monorail. They used a Borg voice. We also did the back stage tour. |

Re: pic: How to scare engineers
As someone that worked for a traveling midway for two years (#1 man on a '63 Herrshan Skywheel thats the big yellow double ferris wheel) all I can say is you guys are nuts... I'd never go on any ride unless I put it up. And one on top a building? NO WAY!
Thankfully what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas :p -p:cool: |
Re: pic: How to scare engineers
Some friends and I went to Cedar point a couple weeks back. While I truly enjoyed all of the rides, the pictures would have appeared to be a mix between horror and me being tortured.
Overall a great trip and we figured out how to ride the MeanStreak without it beating you up. I think our next outing will have to be NJ to ride the King... |
Re: pic: How to scare engineers

I always thought that the best way to ride Mean Streak without getting beaten up was not to ride it at all. :) Kingda Ka isn't all that it's cracked up to be, but if you like Top Thrill Dragster, maybe it'll be something you like more than I do. Great Adventure's El Toro is really why you want to head to New Jersey. |

Top thrill was a neat experience, but Millenium was a much better ride though. I like a good slow climb to build anticipation. |
