p.s. sorry I'm posting so much, Chris is using me as his guinea pig and I really find this thing useful. It cut my drivetrain design time from 5 min. to about 5 sec. :D

Hi Chris,
This looks like it could be a good resource for some quick calculations. I haven't had time to check your math, but it seems reasonable off the top of my head.

If there was one thing to criticize it is your presentation. There were some things you did which confused me a little bit. Maybe it is because I read into things too much due to my familiarity with this material. Some of your terminology is also a little confusing. Nothing that some massaging can't fix.

Overall good job! The best part about this sheet for me, is the lessons that YOU must have learned while creating it. It takes a certain familiarity with the math behind these concepts to create something like this. Kudos to you for taking the time, it will certainly serve you well in the future. I hope you continue to evolve & improve your sheets, because as we all know, design IS an iterative process.

Hi Chris-

Nice! This looks like a couple of good resources for people who are speccing out their drive systems. Your ~0.9 factor for what the actual speed of the CIM is a decent estimate for the general case, I think.

I think one of the great parts of this is your careful attention to what units are being used at each step of the process.

I agree with John's thought on making it as clear and understandeable as possible. You can never stop making it easier to use.

Not that these ideas would make it easier to use (probably the opposite :)) but how about at the important parts of the calculation having a link which describes the calculation that is going on behind the scenes? Or how about a couple of plots showing the results that got generated (top speed versus gear ratio, for example). How about a pushing force calc?

Thanks i am planning on making it a lot more user friendly and hopefully eventually make it have a nice interface.

I will put up a page on how i make these calculations so if i made a mistake you can check my math.

Im currently writing up some rough very rough calculations in excel to calculate acceleration, and how much pushing power you will have (with rough top and wedge top) and eventually make it into a web page.

Added updated calculator allowing to do real time updates for final FPS when you change one of the Gearboxes or Wheels using the Presets.

Added a "How To" for doing FPS

Get your Reduction for desired FPS

Put in:
-your Desired Feet Per Second
-your motor RPM
-your wheel size

and it will generate your reduction required to get your desired FPS

I was thinking about that before but i wanted to keep them in separate files just for ease of finding them but once i find i have them pretty much how i want them i will upload them in a .zip file so you only have to download 1 file for all the calculators and "How To's".

I suppose the common COTS gearboxes and KOP gearboxes would be good. The AndyMark line (and combinations in them. IE: AM planetary to stackerbox, to toughbox, etc...), banebots, KOP FP gearbox, globe gearbox, etc...

Maybe you could make custom gearbox calculator? With the different gears, etc. Also, compiling some white papers and explanations might be helpful to rookies. I would be glad to write a few of them :) I had a hard enough time finding all of this info. (CD helped me a great deal).

I'm hoping this might become kind of like that CD/DVD set miss daisy sends too rookies but for mechanical info.

I took a few days off from working on these calculators and i can't think of any other calculators to help out during the build season.

If anyone can think of another calculator that would be helpful during build let me know and ill write one up.

And my current calculators if anyone has and suggestions for them let me know and ill try to make them better.

You can find charts and even some basic calculators through Google.

At any rate, chipload is an input, not an output, and you need SFM as an input as well. As it stands, with the variables you have given, you can calculate neither a spindle speed nor a feed rate.

I have tried making a calculator for this but i found there are to many variables that can change how fast you can actually go. big one being is the tool sharp. For the machines we have at my school I just remember which feeds to use. If you found me a resource for how to get it then i could probably do it but myself i do not know how.

I'm just playing with it for the first time right now. I really love your gear spacing tool. This is going to be very useful.

Here's my wishlist

-Add Ability to use multiple gearboxes in a single reduction
-Add AM Planetary Gearbox to list: http://andymark.biz/am-0002.html

-Add # of Motors per Gearbox and # of Gearboxes option to Rotary Joint, Intake, and Linear

Hey everyone, hope you all had a great FRC season.

Now that the Official season is over i'm going to try to start working on my calcs again the only thing is i don't know what needs to be changed, so if you have anything you would like me to work on let me know and i will gladly work on it.

I'm up for any suggestions for modifications to the current calcs and open for any requests for new ones.
