2009 Hawaii Regional

Aloha everyone,

Just wondering how many teams are considering the 2009 Hawaii Regional this year. We really enjoyed having the mainland teams at our first regional last year. For the state of Hawaii, hosting a regional was a great experience. All of us here enjoyed it and are looking forward to seeing you this season.

Mahalo!

Well, all of you know we enjoyed you folks attending also.
See you in NJ in '10. :) Our freshman's in '07 (now juniors) claim it was the best regional they ever attended. They want to make it full-circle by going back their senior year.

That would be awesome!:D

I loved your team at NJ my freshman year and it would be a great full-cirlce for me as well. What regionals are you attending this year?

waialua359 26-09-2008 15:20

Re: 2009 Hawaii Regional

NJ and VCU were our 1st and 2nd choices, but cant attend during weeks 1 and 4.
Oregon, San Jose, Hawaii (weeks 2,3 and 5) and CMP are our plans for this year.
See you guys at CMP.

I would highly recommend the Hawaii Regional to any team thinking about attending.

It was bar none the best event I have ever attended. Nothing else has even come close. Everything was amazing-the venue, the event staff, the teams, the people, the team party, the opening ceremonies. The planning committee outdid themselves big time.

Everyone should get out there at some point if they get the chance.

i have to agree with cory. after 11 years of regionals, the hawaiian regional was just awesome. from the moment we stepped off the plane until it was time to leave. words can't describe the aloha spirit we felt. hope we can come back some day......

I'll add one more to that count. Fantastic event and people. I'd really like to go back, but the airfare is out of our range for this year. If your team has the money, definitely go. And be sure to surround the regional with at least a few days to tour the island.

Lavapicker 03-10-2008 18:00

Re: 2009 Hawaii Regional

With the demise of Aloha airlines our roundtrip airfares from the Big Island to Oahu have gone up to $200, then there's lodging at spring break prices and car so we probably won't attend our own "backyard" regional. With the money we had we had a choice of doing a Mainland Regional with fewer kids or Oahu with a bit more and we chose the Mainland. Doesn't look like we'll be doing two regionals this year:confused: :mad: Hopefully some really good Mainland schools can come over like last year and give McKinley 368 and Waialua 359 some competition. We loved playing with the Pink, Poofs and Jersey 25 last year, just to name a few of the "Beasts" that came over. It will definitely be hard watching everyone play from home. Best of luck to all....

Team 223 really wants to go but it's really expensive. We need to raise about 50,000 just to go there, let alone the Championships in Atlanta

But we're trying!!

Re: 2009 Hawaii Regional

We would love to see all of you here in the islands. I know airfare is high but the organizers are trying to put together some travel packages so the overall cost is not as bad. Room rates are down below last year's prices. So there might be some savings.

Maybe the teams that were planning on attending New Zealand could come here instead.

As for as Kazzykaty and her team, we traveled with a skeleton team to Wisconsin last year and have budgeted over $20k for this year. the girls have to pay half of the airfare. (we did give "scholorships" to one where it was a real hardship) but as the team says, where there is a will there is a way. good luck I hope to see you at the Hawaii Regional

Re: 2009 Hawaii Regional

Our official Regional has been cancelled (New Zealand) so we are currently concentrating on VEX. But if somehow we managed to raise enough money then we'd be at Hawaii in a second :D
unfortunately I don't see that happening :( but we wish we could
Hawaii is easily cheapest for us to attempt but its still HUGELY expensive...

Awesome! One of the highlights (the Team Social) will be maintained through the generosity of BAE Systems. We are happy to have with us this season 2629 from Mexico and the first team out of the Philippines 3105!

For me it was not just the best regional of the year, but the best regional I have ever been to (and I have been to quite a few). I would give the Hawaii Regional my highest recommendation to anyone considering going.

Re: 2009 Hawaii Regional

Well, don't be disappointed to not see real time scoring for much of the regional. Apparently the real time scoring devices for the Official Scorers didn't arrive (or haven't been located as of yet). Going to be all the more difficult to determine if you're on the cusp of some G14's. A set is supposedly going to be overnighted but probably won't see implementation until Saturday. yay...

Best of luck to all!

That may not be totally true... last time I checked flights from Hnl-Auk they were around $2000+US roundtrip versus JFK (New York)-Auk is much cheaper something like $1300-1600 US. (And sometimes even a few hundred cheaper than that!) I myself have been trying to figure out how to get to New Zealand from Hawaii! That is one regional I cant wait for! :D

so anyway!

an update on the webcast!

The webcast is up and running but is lagging very badly. We discovered (after some questioning and trouble shooting) that we are sharing bandwidth. :/
At the moment were trying to see If something can be done about this. The feed has failed a few times because of to much traffic (right now were somewhere around .05Mbps ...i wish i was joking) other than that hope youre enjoying whatever you can see!

xcentrix 26-03-2009 22:33

Re: 2009 Hawaii Regional

Hey all -

We would like your feedback on the webcast. The choppy quality is due to the fact that we are sharing bandwidth with others. We are going to try some things on this end that will hopefully ameliorate the choppiness and produce a cleaner better feed. Can you please post where you are viewing from and the quality on a 1 to 5 scale? 1 = total crap and 5 = crystal clear audio and video.

We appreciate your help.

- Deanna

Thanks to 2445 and 2932 for being a great alliance, we had a great time playing with you guys. You guys were great.
Congrats to 2348, 368, and 2443; you guys are very deserving of the win.
Also, congratulations to 359 on Chairman's once again, see you in Atlanta.
We were very happy to adopt members of 1920 whose robot did not show up to the event and enjoyed having them on our drive team and helping out in our pit. Also, we were very impressed with the caliber of the rookies and second year teams here. Great job everybody!

Congrats everyone!
We are so proud to see many of the 2nd year Hawaii teams improve vastly in competition play. 2090, 2504, and 2348: I was very impressed with you all. Your inspiration inspires us even more.
2348, 192, and 368 all played well!
I've watched a lot of webcasts this season and have been to 3 regionals.
368 has by far the BEST shooter I have seen this season. This was their 1st regional, and their driving was very very good. With no practice, they always seem to pull it off.
Hope to see them in Atlanta as the University of Hawaii Engineering Dept. has graciously offered to pay each team (3 regional winners and the CA) $5,000 to cover the entrance fee! :D :D
All 4 of us looks like will be attending.

Thanks to 192 for picking us with the 1st pick. Supercells can REALLY affect matches.

On a side note: We had the luxury of meeting up with Bart Kamen and his mom at the event..........as he reviewed the CA entries. What a treat and great advise.

SEEEE YOUUUUU IN ATLANTA!! :D

On behalf of everyone on Team 2348, I would like to thank all our supporters as well as all the other teams for being great partners and/or rivals. As this is our second year, we learned a lot from every team and made us reflect a lot on our own strengths and weaknesses. In any case, we would like to congratulate all the teams for their outstanding performance in all aspects of the 2009 FIRST game and would like to wish them good luck on any future endeavours, especially if they are going to Atlanta to compete in the World Championships.

Thank you all for a wonderful regional! For obvious reasons, I and the entire Team 2348 thoroughly enjoyed this year's event. However, there were many factors and support that helped us with our success this year.

So allow me to thank:
-Our mentors, one of which who actually thought of the helix concept one day before it appeared on the internet and another who has been very involved with FRC since 2000;
-Our sponsors who graciously provide the necessary funding;
-1726 for providing proof of concept and all the youtube videos during build season;
-Our alliance partners, 368 and 2443, who all playing extremely well during the elimination matches;
-The Hawaii Regional Chairman Award recipients, 359, for paving the way for Hawaii teams (well deserved!) and their coach for allowing me to learn how to coach an alliance;
-and 2437 for lending us the battery box for our crate (we never had to ship our batteries).

Finally, congratulations to all of the all of the award recipients!

We'll see... depends upon if we can raise the remaining thousands necessary to get us there. Otherwise, hopefully our robot has fun in Atlanta without us.

Thanks to our partners 2348 and 2443 - you were both awesome!

Good job again to 359 for their CA as well... didn't need to worry!

A much deserved congratulations to Aaron Dengler of 2090 on the Woodie Flowers award. You do so much for the growth of robotics in Hawaii that people don't realize.

Thanks also to our international attendees - hope it was a blast. Thanks for the cultural performances today as well as last night at the team social.

For a cool time lapse of most of the field assembly, take a look here courtesy of Governor Lingle's site which includes a link to hundreds of photos of the regional. They didn't get the end of the field assembly in the time lapse since it had to be sent out to the local news stations for the early evening broadcasts.

Congratulations again to all on a great regional! A special thanks to those who volunteered, to those teams who donated students to help with various tasks, and to great workers like Andy Baker and Mark Koors in addition to all of the folks from BAE.

Hey guys (368,2348,2443). I'm the programmer from 2090 and I just wanted to say that it has been an honor to compete with you all. Even though we lost I still feel like a winner and I can't think of anyone better to loose to than your alliance :).

Seriously this was the most fun I've had at any regional ever. The dancing, the laughing, the cheering, and all the new people made it an experience I'll remember for the rest of my life. As a senior headed for a mainland college I'm not going to have much of a chance to participate with 2090 or any of the other teams next year and I'm just so happy to have gone out in such a high standing. All of the teams at the regional showed great spirit and aloha. I know we always talk about gracious professionalism and loosing/winning with it but... and I know this sounds corny... I think for once all of us really were winners.

Thanks to:
All of the teams who participated.
A special shout out to team 192 who saved our program (and then gave us this awesome trophy after we beat them in semis).
All of the mentors.
The volunteers (Especially fellow students who helped out).

My understanding is Kickoff will be Sat Jan 9, 2010. Traditional 6 week build and Tuesday ship would take us to Tue Feb 23. Week 1 Regionals would commence on Thu Mar 4. Hawaii DOE Spring Break is Mar 15-19 (Week 3) but the University of Hawaii Spring Break is Mar 22-26 (Week 4) - Fri Mar 26 being a State Holiday (Kuhio Day) fortunately for DOE schools.

Week 5 Regionals would be Apr 1-3 and there will be no Week 6 Regionals as the Championships commence on Thu Apr 15 which is locked in.

waialua359 29-03-2009 17:15

Re: 2009 Hawaii Regional

Osa,
That would mean that the regional may indeed be during week 3 or 4.
If week 3, Hawaii teams may be limited to doing a week 1 or 5 only on the mainland.
However, Hawaii teams that may want to participate in mainland regionals may have a huge cost savings transporting their robots, as the robot doesnt have to travel back and forth to Hawaii more than once in a season.
If week 3, we may be looking at Hawaii first, then Vegas week 5, then directly to CMP. :D :D :D

It would be my only excuse now for going to Vegas......."because its for Robotics."

If these dates come true that would be hard on teams that are not able to miss 2 weeks in a row. For us with other apearances the first week it could lead to a strange schedule.
