2009 Southern California Regional
FIRST is probably still calling it the Los Angeles Regional, but since it has been moved to Long Beach, the name in the thread title is probably more appropriate.
The Regional will be Week 3, March 12-14 at the Long Beach Arena. Right next door to the Long Beach Convention Center. Nice hotels, a variety of restaurants, a beach, Aquarium of the Pacific, and the Queen Mary in easy walking distance. Not to mention a Segway dealer/rental place and the Metro Blue Line for those that do not want to pay for parking. It is close to Long Beach Airport which can be cheaper to fly into than LAX and is certainly less hassle. If your team is looking for a really nice away regional, this is a good place to come |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
Long Beach? That's quite new. I don't know if I will be used to calling that my old home regional with the drive being longer. But the Long Beach Convention Center sounds like a great Southern California-esque setting for anyone planning to come in from out of state (even though we get 1 out of state team per year (excluding Nevada and Arizona)). Waking up a bit early might be a little bit more of a pain for some teams though :P .
The places to visit around it sound fun. I'm sure in addition to it being a great regional the social will be pretty stellar as well with new options.I'm a bit depressed I won't be able to make it for the first time since I've joined FIRST. |

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
The Long Beach Arena is less than 3 miles from the city of Los Angeles, and it's still within Los Angeles County. So I think it's reasonable to keep calling this the Los Angeles Regional.
The surrounding area is definitely more user-friendly than where we've had the competition in the past. If I were visiting from out of the area, my "wish list" would include staying on the Queen Mary, then riding a Segway to the arena. Of course, I don't really have that kind of money... An extra day to visit the aquarium and tour the Queen Mary would be more within budget. |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
We were fortunate today to have a MasterCAM expert provide MasterCAM and CNC (post-processor) training this past weekend who was a former instructor/mentor of team 696 Clark Magnet School and Glendale Community College. :D
Heard nothing but great things about that team. |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
973 will be returning to the LA regional this season.
|

We might be there too!

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
Team 1323 will coming this year. =)
|
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
A nice mix of teams this year. Along with "the usual suspects," we have two Brazilian teams and one Chilean team, and four rookie teams so far.
1197 will be joining the fray, as well. |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
will 1323 also be at davis this year?
|
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
1138 will be there. Can't wait!

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
399 will be there again... Expect it to be loud. ;P

but one question, will there be a team social this year? |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
There will be no official social this year due to lack of budget. If somebody wants to put tgether something un-official like we did years ago at the Santa Monica promenade, go for it!

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
Does anyone know if there is a webcast in the works? I won't be there in person, but I really don't want to miss out on watching the matches. It looks to be a fun regional, good luck to all attending!
|
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
I won't be there, unfortunately it is the week before my finals. But! I am one of your website judges, so I have at least some presence over there. Best of luck to all teams!

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
Oh man this just made my day. First off congrats to 207, 973 and (of course) 2659, especially 2659 cause I love you guys, great job guys, 2nd regional you guys attended to take it all home. Good stuff.
Man, I waited a year and it was worth it, congrats guys back home in LA. I wish I was there with you. |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
big congrats to 1138 on winning Chairmans!
It was a very competitive regional, lots of close matches. 973 definitely ate their Wheaties (literally) and it did the trick! Congrats to them, 207, and 2659 for pulling off the underdog win, it was very impressive. Thanks to our alliance partners 330 and 980,it was great playing with you, and we almost did it.... The regional went very smoothly, aside from some field reset delays the first two mornings. The music sound level was just right (no hearing protection required), the elimination rounds went very quickly, and the volunteers all did a great job, thanks! We're off to Phoenix next weekend, hope our robot gets there |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
For those that are wondering, I did in fact find rccola in 1323's pit this morning. I also found some other CDers at various times throughout the day. (Sidenote: I had no idea how many Penguineers browse CD regularly...)
The field left at a decent time, so now I have to do homework. |

Congrats to all the winning teams especially to 1138, a win most definitely deserved. For my last Southern California/Los Angeles Regional, it is something that I will definitely miss. Thanks to everyone who made it a memorable one! Good Luck with the rest of the competition season!
|
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
Not the results we were hoping for.. But its all good! Huge congrats to the winners, 973 I especially loved your robot.
(in match 13 when we took both sides of the trailer and filled it, that was my favorite play of the day) Congrats to 1138 on a well deserved Chairman's award.. We'll have to step it up to compete with you guys next year.. On a worldwide level it seems.:yikes: I hope we perform well in Denver so I can go to champs and see some of you guys. If my senior year is the only year we don't get to go.. =( oh well. Oh, and if any of you saw me storming around (kind of) after our loss, I'm sorry. Not what I was hoping for, after 3 years of not having the best robot to being one of the best.. I was hoping for a little more. But, we always have another regional and I shoulda been cooler about it. Awesome last LA regional for me. (as a student) Thank you all for the compliments on my driving... and yes, we really don't have any traction control. (lol and it was pretty funny some people came over and asked how we modified our wheels) |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
My team loves to tell me, "I told you so" when I'm wrong. Not wanting to get their hopes too high, i told them Saturday morning before matches if 1388 retained their first seed status (rather than 587 bumping them out) they would pick the best scorer, and the rest of the top 8 would be scattered good teams. In otherwords, since we weren't the best scorer, we weren't winning. Well, they sure showed me. A LOT of solid teams got bumped into the top 8 after that.
thanks to 207 and 2659. 207 is a team that definitely doesn't get enough credit; they sometimes have too odd or unique of a design to get their peers attention, but they always, always are beautifully designed and manufactured. Durabot is a great name for it, and a well deserved quality award. Overall, a great time. Even with missing two qualifying matches, we had a great time. The first match to just passing inspection a moment too late, the second to not getting bumpers on in time. Rookie mistake, we've got about 90% rookie students, and 100% of the mechanical students/pit crew are rookie. Probably my fault for not hounding them sooner  I can't decide which qualifying match we loved the most. In match 13 we were with 399 and even with a slow drive (Doh, locked out 2 speed gearboxes in LOW not HIGH) 399 and us hit a trailer from opposite sides and completely filled it, it was a great sight. Match 57 with 1726 vs 1717 was also great, if 1726 and us had not eat the Wheaties I brought to our hotel, we might not have made that (and I suppose a good heaping of teamwork). And we can't forget match 64... watching 1717 strafe sideways following a goal while unloading to reinforce our win was an impressive site, 1717 has got to be one of my all time favorite teams to work with. You guys better win something at Davis and make your way to champs, that is way too nice of a machine to stop at the regional level. For that matter, 399, 1388, 1726, 330 (that "crab" is AWESOME) and 294 (greater robot to sneak in under the radar for the first round draft, and get a solid 2nd pick) all better find a way too. Thanks to the volunteers who were so patient, especially the nice ladies in queuing who had to hassle us so much . And I guess to all the inspectors who had to hassle us so much. Sorry to all who had to investigate the field issues we caused (NOTE TO ALL: a normal DriverStation power supply not plugged into the wall but still plugged into the DriverStation can apparently damage the field). In the end I had a great time, my team had a great time, and we've got a big group of enthusiastic rookies who are PUMPED for Vegas, champs, and of course the rest of their long tenure on the team. Some of this younger students make me feel $@#$@#$@#$@# stupid for not being so bright at their age. We obviously can't decide for a while, but LA is certainly high on our list for regionals in 2010. P.S: we'll post some good pics of the robot in a day or two when I get them from the photographers. |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
So what exactly happened to 1323 during qualifiers? I heard from a few that when they actually worked on the field they were a decent shooter.
Anyone have pics or vids of the robots at LA? def want to see 1717 |

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
I was spectating at the LA regional. A lot of really impressive bots out there!
I especially liked team 1717's drive system and pivoting launcher. Very exciting final match, too! Those two alliances were pretty much evenly matched and played well. I was surprised, though, that little effort went into going for empty cells to convert to super cells -- was this intentional? In other words, did alot of the teams here decide going for the super cells weren't worth it/too risky? |

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
On behalf of team 1671, i would like to thank teams 1388 and 399 for choosing us to be a part of their alliance. It was one of the best experiences I have had on the team. We were definitely under the radar, ranked 57/60, winning only one match in qualifications.
I just wish we could have scored an extra ball that first round in the semis, and an extra two in the second round. Losing with a score that close just kills you. It's one thing if you lose by 20 points, but when it's so close, it just kills. As a senior on the team, I was really hoping to make it to nationals this year since i have never been before. I guess we will see what we can do in Davis! Once again I want to thank everyone on 399 and 1388, heck you guys even took us out to where your team was eating lunch and fed our drivers and strategy personnel so we could plan. For those of you attending Davis, we will see you there! |

Team 980 had a blast.
Thanks to the BeachBots (330) and NERDS (1726) for inviting us to the elims. The semis and finals were some of the closest and hardest fought matches I recall at the LA regional. The margin of victory was really low for the late matches (a tie and four matches decided by 2 or less moonrocks). The number 1 alliance was knocked out in the semis and the finals went to a rubber match for the win by the number 5 alliance. More thanks to all the volunteers, staff and teams for making this year's regional a fun, exciting event in a new venue. |

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
Hey, Michael Montazeri, thanks for the congratulations, but the truth is we would be lost without the help of your old team, 1138 and I would have been lost last year without your help. Programming this year involved an entirely new control system and programming laguage but we were able to figure it out thanks to your help last year. Thanks for all your help man and a big thanks to Team 1138, Eagle Engineering from Chaminade!
Also, I want to give a huge thanks to Team 207 and 973 for picking us as their third alliance member. I thought we made a great team. I was the robot shooter for team 2659 during the quarter finals through the finals and the alliance spirit on the field was amazing! Thanks so much for the pick, we owe you guys. By the way, both of your robots were amazing both in looks and functionality and I think our robots complimented each other's strengths and weaknesses very nicely. See you guys at nationals in Atlanta! -Chris Barlog Team 2659 |

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
Well .. time to throw my 2 cents in here :)
It was nice to see all the usual suspects down in LA again. All the 330 guys volunteering on the field and in the pits .. David from 980 (who I always seem to run into everywhere at FRC events) .. and of course our friends from north county .. GRR 973. It's been awhile since we were at the same regional, and this one didn't disappoint. Playing back to back regionals was pretty tough, although we were still pumped up from our 2nd seed and finalist finish last weekend in SD. In 6 years, we've never seeded 1st or 2nd, let alone in the same season. 399 and 1671, you guys were great to play with. Those semi matches against 207, 973 and 2659 were the best matches I've seen this year, and probably some of the best matches I've seen in my history with FIRST. First the tie, then the next 2 matches with only a few points of separation - that's how it should be. Also, thanks to all of you who came over to see the Gyro - it's something we worked hard on this year, and are very proud to be one of the teams that accomplished the task. We were really hoping to take it to Atlanta to show it to everyone else, but it just didn't seem to turn out that way. Sorry for all of you who were hoping to see it there - if you have questions or want more information on it, please PM me. And thanks (and congratulations) to everyone else there. We all know that the California regionals are the best in FIRST .. and it's because of you guys. We'll see ya next year! Quote:

399, I will have nightmares of you filling my trailer in 3 seconds. I'm not sure how the Wizard of Oz could seem so scary, even if its just the Tinman!
We had a great time at the LA Regional, and it was our first ever competition, yay rookies! The comeradery was amazing, and everyone was so helpful to each other. We also learned ALOT about the whole scouting concept.....we didn't even know it existed until we got there. Teams that I enjoyed working with would be 1717 and 4. The 3 of us were allianced on Friday, and we dominated. I'm hoping our team can get to the caliber of 1717 one day.......that was an awesome bot! We ended up winning the Rookie All Star award, so we are invited to Atlanta if we can get that $5,000 dollars...... |
Re: 2009 Southern California Regional

On behalf of 1197, I'd like to thank everyone for making this year's regional a blast. We were thrilled (and very surprised) when our mentor won Regional Woodie Flowers on Friday evening!
(side note: I promised I'd shave my head if we left L.A. empty-handed... guess that'll never happen! :D) Congratulations to 1138 and all the champion/finalist alliances - well deserved, teams. We did fix our robot in time for alliance pickings, but alas, that was too late... it'll be ready in Vegas for sure. We'll be bringing more of our Lil' TorBot dolls, too. |

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
I'd like to thank everyone from Team 1388 and Team 399 for allowing us to be on your, and in my mind the best alliance that Team 1671 Doc Bot has been so far since our rookie year! We certainly had high hopes of making it to the finals and onto Atlanta. I know from reflecting back on the experience with our team's seniors, we really thought we had the alliance to push all the way.
I'd like to point out that Mr. Bill Findley was nothing but gracious with our team drivers and human players after we lost. As many of you know who have been in the playoffs and who have come close - then to lose it all, it makes everyone mad, angry, sad, frustrated, etc. But...Bill Findley was composed during this most emotional part after the loss. Bill, if you ever need anything in the future at any event, I hope that you will come on over to our pit area and make yourself at home. You are a true competitor and a professional - much respect. Team 399, you have so much respect from Team 1671, we have seen you perform for several years now...to be on the same alliance is....well it was awesome. I wish we could have spent more time with you and well...decompressed after the semi's. We certainly enjoyed your drive team and Drive coach! If you are ever at another event, please swing by and hang out! We have a lot to learn and as one of the more wiser teams we watch and see how teams of your caliber are successful year in and year out. Much respect Team 399! To my team, I am very proud of how this team bounced back from a terrible record and then stay positive throughout the preliminary rounds. We certainly found out that we are a pinning bot, and we certainly caused notice to the top teams. The result, being picked out of nowhere and into the alliance rounds. To the seniors on the team, thank you for your leadership. With all of my heart I wished we would have made it to the finals. I'll always remember what you said Andrew, "This was THE best experience of all since becoming a member of robotics, even better than last year's alliance experience!" So....Teams 399 and Teams 1388, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing us a shot to go all the way. I look forward to seeing you all again, some of you at UC,Davis and others next season. Once again, thanks and see you |

This just goes to show you what happens when lots of smart people come together to complete a common goal.

Re: 2009 Southern California Regional
The LA regional was a lot of fun, and it was great getting to know everybody there.
Team 399, it was a blast sitting and cheering with you. You guys have spirit, yes you do! You also have probably the best driver at the competition, and a killer robot Team 1515, we two-teen-numbers-in-a-row teams must stick together. Our entire team (mentors included) thinks you guys are hilarious. Stick around for another rendition of our theme song: Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls" Teams 973, 207, and 2659, you guys won with class. I couldn't help but notice how loud you were in the stands. Thanks to all the teams who cheered, yelled, and waddled for us. |

I'll agree with my teammates here and throw in a little extra, I especially enjoyed the conversations that I had with the programmers from 1515 and the chairmans award winning team who's number escapes me at the moment about image processing. Bill Findley is easily one of the better coaches I've coached with and against. When you're on the same alliance, he keeps you grounded and certainly brings out the competitor in every member of the alliance. When you're coaching against him, you know your in for a tough fight. Bill Findley is a model for Gracious Professionalism and you can see it in his kids. Hopefully we'll get to play again soon, Bill! |
