2009 New Jersey Regional

So who's going to be making another trip to Trenton this upcoming season?

Of course, MORT will be at our home regional once again. Expect even more powerhouse teams this year.

Join us at what is always a highly competitive and lively competition. Don't forget about all that GP packed into the Sovereign Bank Arena!

So who's ready?

Sadly I will have to miss my first NJ Regional since 2001 (back when it was the mid-atlantic regional). Unfortunately the boston regional was moved to week 2 which threw a big gigantic ugly wrench into our plans for the competition season and is causing me to miss good ol NJ, but I'm sure NJ can hold it down without me ;)

1676 will surely be there - how could we miss it? I'm just not sure I can bring myself to think that far in advance...

There's no doubt in my mind they would have won it even if there were 20 rookies coming. People need to get to know this team at NJ..they will be prominent in the future.

FIRST reserves spots in events for rookies until registration closes on December 1st. For most events I believe they usually hold 10 spots. This would seem about right for NJ this year as last year's attendance was 63 teams and 53 are registered so far this year. If those spots are not taken by rookies by the time registration closes teams on the waiting list will be let in.

Hopefully more rookies are on the wait list. As much as I'd love to see 2753 win those awards I'd rather have them earn them. Also, if there aren't any new rookie teams in NJ, then god help us....we need new teams.

Well, I am not sure if the list on usfirst.org is updated, as the teams aren't in order, and everything says 2009, but it looks as if there will be some, if not all of the same teams going....

There are two ways that the lists work, if you don't already know.

1) (the new default) teams will be sorted by the ABC order of their location, rather than by team number (which is why you will see the team numbers out of order)

2) you can click the number heading to sort the list by team number, which is how most of us are used to seeing the lists. I think this is something FIRST added a year or two ago (I'm not sure why, though.)

Hopefully this helps out.

Oh, and the Highest Rookie Seed, too.

Not really. The venue has a capacity of around 65 teams - that's what I have seen there in the past few years - yet only 53 spaces or so were "available", just as already noted by Vikesrock.

Hmmm its almost time for the competition but not really you know. And I was just wondering how many people would be interested in me giving out hacky sacks. I always see people playing and I was like Hmmm getting my team out there and playing my favorite sport what could be better. So if someone could let me know if there is any interested teams that would be good.

102 gave them out 2 years ago (i believe). We brought a certain number to Jersey because we wanted to save some for our other competitions. Needless to say, they were a HUGE hit and we had to bring some extras out of our Atlanta stash to please the FIRSTers haha. So they are definately a good idea :)

Team 2016 is pleased to announce that we will be giving out $200.00 gift certificates for AndyMark products as prizes for our First Annual Eyeglass and Hearing Aid Drive. We will award one certificate to the team that brings in the most items at the New Jersey Regional this February.

AndyMark, Inc. is an official supplier of parts for F.I.R.S.T. teams. We felt that any team could benefit from being able to order spare, upgrade, or replacement parts and AndyMark agreed!

As representatives of Ewing High School and Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf, we take great pride in working with the Lions Club International at their New Jersey Regional Eyeglass Recycling Center. This is one of only seven such centers in America, and our students are involved with processing glasses here on our campus as part of our ongoing Community Service Projects.

Please help us get students involved in collecting unused eyeglasses and hearing aids in their own schools and donating them for this worthy cause.

Should definitely be at least 10x10. They are pretty good sized, but the layout gets hectic with the way it works. Aisles aren't all that wide, and there's a lot of people around.

Re: 2009 New Jersey Regional

MORT is ready as we'll ever be. Just hope its good enough to finally take the NJ title home. Winning our home regional for the first time would be a huge moment of success. Our robot, I'll admit, is mediocre and will be bested by many bots in ball capacity. Our strategies and drivers on the other hand should fair well amongst the other teams.

Just 10 days and bam, Lunacy will begin. I have seen the game played a few times and it is surprisingly exciting. I am excited now to see the outcome.

Few specific teams I want to get to know better: 303, 103, 102, 25, 75, 41, 816, 1403, 2753, 1279, and 1089. To the first 6 listed, MORT has lost our ways in communicating with our fellow veteran teams in the past and have built up a detrimental reputation and team aura, we are determined to change that. The change began for our team over the course of this summer and build season but we want to see the change come to full fruition at Trenton in those precious 3 days and continue for the rest of our team's existence. Younger teams may not understand what I'm talking about but I'm certain the mentors and members of those 6 teams do. MORT will be willing and ready to work with teams at Trenton with a positive and cooperative attitude and I hope that we all can share a mutual respect for one another this year. I say unto you all, best of luck and I, and MORT, will see you there with a heart to win this regional for the first time ever. Good night and may you have a pleasant ship day.

The change began for our team over the coarse of this summer and build season but we want to see the change come to full fruition at Trenton in those precious 3 days and continue for the rest of our team's existence.

I think I can speak for 303 in saying you guys have been one of the most helpful teams towards us this build season and we are looking forward to seeing you guys at trenton. As always we will be going into trenton with our eyes on the prize and a strong will to win :)

As a vet team we know what you mean and we're excited for the future between the teams you've listed, all which have extreme talent and potential, good luck at trenton and may the best teams win!

ZOMG A BEAR!!! I don't know just figured I would start it out the right way you know. I am pretty hype for Jersey this year. Wanna try to meet some new people. Make new friends. Play good matches. Win some matches. Win the regional. Keep making like three word sentences.

I'm resting up for what should be an awesome time at NJ...just figured I'd give a couple pointers for all attending:

1) It WILL be cold. All teams are playing on Regolith, but only a select few can say that they play on an ice rink. As a result, the arena tends to get chilly, so come prepared. You can always take off extra layers later in the day if you get hot, but you can't magically make clothes if you're too cold.

2) Like many people said before, the pits can get a bit hectic. We have more than 60 teams confined to a rather small space. Please exhibit proper safety so the EMT's won't have that much to do.

3) If you have any problems/questions about the venues please ask a volunteer. They are there to help (as long as you do so in a respectful manner).

4) Please remember that the volunteers are just that, volunteers. These people put in approximately 50 hours of work minimum over the 4 day competition. (You're only there 3, but we're there a day early to set it up.)

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting, so If I remember I'll post them in the days ahead.

Everyone rest up, bring your GP, and get ready for a party!

PS: Danny, you still owe me a 816 shirt from last year :)

Hmmmm and remember whenever your team is out on the field, cheer loud and cheer proud. Nothing makes me more bummed out then when we go out for a match and the team is just in stands and not cheering. So then I yel at them(in a nice manner of course) and tell them to cheer. I love hearing cheers from the crowd makes me fall all tingly inside ;).

I think it was more highly anticipated back when it was the J&J Mid-Atlantic Regional. Teams from all over used to come. Hopefully next year a lot of the big name teams come back.

I was bummed last year that I didn't get to go, so I'm psyched to be coming this year! '06/'07 was a blast and I'm certainly looking to catch up with my Jersey folks.

I'm also there to take photos for a MA newspaper as a teaser for the Boston regional, so smile! :D

Webcast will be graciously done with help from 1676 (per what I've kept up on with New Jersey Regional planning commitee minutes). As to a link yet, I am not sure but once there is one it will be posted :)

1279 wishes all of our NJ friends the best of luck. We decided to try the new DC Regional this year, unfortunately DC is scheduled for the same time as NJ.

Hope to see and alliance with some of our friends later in the season at Philly!

While it may have been more highly anticipated...it was also in a gym smaller than the one at MOHS.......

Zomgggg Three days. I really hope that it gets warmer out. Even though it was really cold last year. And the year before. So I guess it is kind of a tradition now? Anyone else as excited as I am?

Indeed, this came as a surprise to me as well, but it's true! I do not have the link yet, but it will posted ASAP.

As in past years, Team 1676 will also be sharing our complete scouting database with anyone who has 802.11b capabilities. Stop by our pits on Thursday for an instruction card explaining how to log in to the database.

Don

Given that 802.11b is a wireless technology I just want to make sure you are aware of the ban on wireless at events covered in Team Update 12 and clarified in Team Update 13.

I get to support two teams this year, the one I mentor, 2180, and of course good old team 11.

So Akash, will McGowan be at the regional this year? The only thing better than meeting new teams and new team members will be reuniting with the ones I know.

Good luck to everyone on those fateful three days!

Uhh.. I emailed him a while back and he said he'd be there. But I'm not entirely sure on it. Stop by the pit when you can and I'll take you to him if I find him. =)

Btw in that case we'll be rooting for 2180 too!

Alright, thank you! I love McGowan and everything, but I've found that you can't always trust what he says and what he does to be the same thing xD It's gotta be sad with him retired and all ;_;

Unrelatedly, when I told the mentors at 2180 that I was from 11, they were like, "ELEVEN?? The numbers go that low?"

Hahahaha, so true. I'm holding him to this though.

Curious to see how 2180 does. They had an awesome rookie season IIRC.

I'd love to see them do well, but since I haven't even seen their robot, I can't say I have much of a personal stake. I was involved in their animation, and although I think we did really well, if your animation beats ours then I'll be sad xD Hopefully their rookie animation team will do as well as their rookie robot team.

Will there be a lot of rookie teams at Trenton this year? As far as I could ever figure out, this regional seems to have a lot more experienced powerhouse teams than some others, and it's probably really tough to try to compete as a rookie.

Meh. :(

I think there is only one rookie team at NJ. Team Overdrive - 2753. Given their FTC past and the design of their robot they barely classify as a rookie team :p

Which leads to an interesting question... will Overdrive travel Atlanta given they win the Rookie All-Star by default :ahh:

No. It's still a toss-up between BAE Regional in NH & the NJ Regional.
I'll know when I wake up Saturday morning.. or start driving on a whim either North or South on Friday evening after work.
That's just how I roll.
Heck, maybe I'll even just drive to DC since I was already an official part of that regional by doing some pre-event judging this past weekend. :p

Hahah good point! I doubt they'll be penalized just because they're the only ones... after all, it sounds to me like the deserve it. I wonder how they'll do.
