1144 is registered for the Regional. They are from Puerto Rico. However no sign of the 9 rookies from 2008 registering. It is still very early in the process. Give them time :)

It is still up in the air wether or not I will be attending the regional this year. Florida Regional was my first event as a FIRSTer and I have not missed it since 2006. :(

When is 1902 not up for anything? Bacon is amazing! Love your spirit.

Looks like FL teams are registering quickly & the field will be full of talented competitors. Its great seeing teams like 103, 25 & 1144 making the trip & its worth noting that the arena/facility at UCF just keeps getting better.

Team 1557: 12 Volt Bolt is set to go & are busy settling into their new "robot clubhouse" in Eustis. Can't wait to hear what this year's challenge will involve.

Try a random name generator, I've heard they work pretty well for FIRST team names :-)

I excited for the regional, its always a blast and hyper competitive.

After seeing all the Fl teams again at TNT and the spirit of competition, I am definitely ready for a new game and the 09' Fl regional. Also with great visitors such as 103 and 25 coming down for the chaos it should be fun. Now back to learning about the cRIO....

Wow! OUr school gets a senior trip at the end of the year in April. (But they don't have to come back when it's over) so ... I guess that's why ours is late. I can't wait to be a senior. O and it's against school rules for me to leave stadium/hotel.

Yes you can hear it. But the sound will be delayed by about 3 minutes. Most people miss the sound because it's often out of sight by then (unless it's night). We always hear the sound in Daytona (50 miles from the pad) and the UCF campus is about 35 miles from the pad.

Ive' havent heard the sound in the past 5-6 launches(although I can see the launch)

And if they dident close off Playalinda Beach-I'd be out there surfing when the shuttle goes off:P

Oh I forgot. To hear the sound you have to remove the i-pod earphones from your ears ;) and then you can hear it only if there hasn't been been permanent damage to the low frequency range from too much loud music.

Seriously, the background noise level makes a big difference. And the roar probably travels quite a bit better over water.

bigbeezy 04-03-2009 21:50

Re: 2009 Florida Regional

sometimes its hard for us to even hear (we live within 10 miles of the pads :p ) depends on cloud cover and winds. That'll be the second year in a row FIRST arranged a shuttle launch near the Florida Regional. Last year it was a night launch like the Wednesday before. (I just slept through it, seen enough of them its not worth staying up till 3 am). But I would seriously recommend if you've never seen a night launch go to one before the shuttles are retired, it is probably one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen.

If there is a launch around the time of Florida, I apologize in advance since most likely it will be delayed. One of the few launches that I can think of that surprisingly went off on schedule opened my graduation http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=67922

I think 5 all total.

Let's see: :ahh: :ahh: :ahh: :ahh: :D

If you try to use more, you get a very nice message that states that 5 is the limit. I had to remove yours in the quote or it was counted as the 5th one, allowing me only 4. At least that's what I think happened. Jane + smileys = nuts.

Good luck to you!

I didn't hink there was actually a limit. Eventually, I'll write a huge post and have to erase my emotions.:( But life goes on.:)

I also wanted to know if anyone knows how big the practice area would be. I was told in the past it was outside and very small. However, what if a few teams brought 1-2 peices of regolith to help test autonomous', etc. Maybe even a team or two bring a trailer. Just thinking. It might help out some teams. (Even us;) )

That's 5 YAY!!!! (I had to delete your's too (sticking out tounge (my 6th))) (now i'm overloading on parenthesis)

According to the regional website the practice field is 15 feet by 30 feet but I don't know what part is regolith or carpet.

Hi all...
I'm a mentor on team 1922 (Hopkinton, Weare, Henniker NH) and I'm just saying that I'm sad and jealous that I won't be able to make the trip to the Orlando regional with the rest of my team. They are one of THREE NH teams heading to the competition!!! Considering that I still have 3 feet of snow on my back deck, I could really use the change of scenery. Add to that the shuttle launch, and that's going to be one spectacular time. Good luck to all the teams and have a great time.

I have to say I'm pretty excited about this year's event, even more then usual. When we did the venue walkthrough a few months back I was really excited seeing how the pits and field will work this year... I think having the 2 buildings is almost going to be a reward for the mentors that survived the Florida Regional "Dark Ages" (also known as pit tent city).

I'm really glad Wendy was able to put together a social for teams, it's been ashame we haven't been able to have one for a few years and I think it's definitely going to be a good time. I just hope we're done setting up in time so I can be over there Oinking a bit before Thursday. Yeah as mentioned in this thread. Hopefully the hydrogen leak on the external tank isn't serious enough in which it will allow everyone coming to this regional to get a chance to see a launch.

Other than a on our own alliance scoring 20 points in our trailer, this has been a very smooth regional. There's way too much room for human intervention and error in this game

I put together all of Bongle's DPR, OPR and PMR stats for anyone who is interested for scouting/ picking etc. Disclaimer..none of this is my work, it is all Bongle's, I just stuck in in list form. So here you go.

A high OPR might indicate:

-A HP that is very effective at getting balls into enemy trailers

-Any robot that just 'greases the wheels' of its alliance, resulting in higher scores

A low OPR (yes, it can even be negative) might indicate:
-An otherwise good robot that takes a lot of penalties
-A robot that simply doesn't score much
-A robot impedes its alliance-partner's progress at scoring

Re: 2009 Florida Regional

Don't know if it was said yet, but the launch (if my sources - i.e. Barry - are correct) is to happen Sunday now. And yes, we are on NASA tv!!!! wo0t!
/subject change/ My mom keeps calling to ask, oh is that you!? Right when the match is ending and I have to reset the field..... le sigh.
/subject change/ In other news, I already have about 250 photos from the regional, and will be posting them on Facebook (if anyone cares to know).
/subject change/ I stand by my question from before though. (Please no one be offended by this) Is it that hard of a concept that, if you are on the Blue Alliance, that you would hook up to a blue trailer? (/subject change I'm calling them modules because it sounds more like a space term/object)
/subject change/ Is this happening to any other field resetters: I see orbit balls when I close my eyes.....
Okay, I'm done with my random thoughts for today.
I will be off to help the Philadelphia Regional, now (well, figuratively because I can't afford that trip right now).
:D

Even though I was a volunteer too, I would like to thank all of the other volunteers for helping pull this off. The regional seemed much grander than before. Many good memories were made.
Congrats to 233, 179, and 1649 as well - you guys were GREAT!
Also, I would really like to thank the Plemmons family for putting up with me for almost a week! You guys are great (as well as other Bacon families) and well, all of Exploding Bacon actually, is awesome.
This may very well be my last Florida Regional but, it was a great one, and I will never forget it. :D
Thanks everyone!

um... so i guess 1649 didnt do anything then...

1649 (EMS) has an outstanding robot and put up some incredible scores. Without them their alliance wouldn't have made it out of the quarters.

Congrats 179, 1649 and 233. The Finals were amazing. 744, 79 and 1251 you all put up one heck of a fight.

Good luck to all in future regionals and I hope to see you in ATL

Oh man, im still coming down off the adrenaline high. Im so happy that our alliance won, and it really was the alliance and specifically our team work that won us this competition. This regional was tough, and I think we had a good 4 or 5 alliances, tat easily could have won almost any other regional. ill post more later once I sleep and collect my thought but I want to do my thanks now.

Thanks to 233, with out your defense we could not have pulled out that last match. Weird huh, we picked you guys for defense its usually the other way around. anyways Im glad i got to win with you guys, I wouldn't want it any other way.

But I think we can all agree that the real thanks goes to team 1649. You guys built a really impressive bot, I love that thing. You played so well, and executed perfectly on our strategies. It was amazing watching you guys ninja around the field and just pop out of no where with 10-20 balls and just spit them all out into the trailer. Frankly I'm amazed you guys were still around when you got to us. Hopefully we can get to work again at nationals. I know if I get the chance to I would love it.

Also I love that this year the finals was all native teams, we showed those out of state teams that you cant just show up to Fl and expect to walk out with gold on your neck, it's just not going to happen.

Yup. We were the potted plant hiding in the corner trying not to get noticed.

Thanks for the kind comments.

There really was a synergy in the alliance and while we appreciate your praise, it is we that want to thank Swamp Thing for seeing our potential and placing your trust in us.

We also want to congratulate 79 Krunch 744 Shark Attack and 1251 Tech Tigers. Your robots were outstanding and you played with class and smarts. It was our honor to share the field with such worthy opponents

Re: 2009 Florida Regional

Congratulations to the Fla. Regional winning alliance: Teams 179, 233 & 1649.

179: You finally broke that 2nd place curse! Fantastic robot, strategizing & play. You are a force every year & a determined competitor.

233: When I saw all those parts on Thurs. I foolishly doubted you. Absolutely amazing persistence & hard work. I couldn't stop admiring your bot's appearance & ultimate manuverability (your CD teaser was very appropriate).

1649: An outstanding team since your strong rookie year. Even when your dumper was still under development, your robot stood out at Robot Ruckus preship scrimmage. You were invaluable to the alliance.

Every team who competed have much to be proud of. It was an honor meeting so many out of state teams who kept the competition intense & enjoyed some Fla. sunshine.

The volunteers, refs, safety inspectors, judges and arena personel were wonderful. Thank-you to all for making this competition such a well run, wonderful event.

Major congrats to team 1557, 12 Volt Bolt, for winning the Chairman's Award. It was their 1st year submitting a Chairman's Essay. In addition to winning the Chairman's Award, MARS awarded them the Best Button Award for their button defining FIRST as "Fostering Insanity & Restlessness in Students and Teachers." 12 Volt Bolt is Mega Awesome.

Congrats to Swamp 179 for being seeded 7th, winning, and picking great partners.

Congrats to 233, Pink Team, for winning the Regional and Engineering Inspiration, just like last year.

The final matches between 79, 744, 1144 and 179, 1649, and 233 were amazing in that the first two matches were extremely lopsided victories, but the last match was so close.

Gah, I got 10 hours of sleep and I still feel tired.

Thanks are in order:

Mike Walker and Sarah Plemmons for being the best VC's a girl could ask for.

To our head ref, Jennifer, even though I didn't get to work with you as a ref I saw how you interacted with the other refs and students, you did a truly amazing job.

To our FTA who's name always escapes me, you did a great job and good luck following the field to the next regional and the championships.

To all the field reset volunteers - ya'll did an awesome job of keeping us on time. :) Thanks for talking to me during matches and stuff. Kept my job a little more interesting.

To Dennis - Thanks for keeping the field under control, and trying to keep us on schedule it is much appreciated, an hour and a half drive home everyday is easier when we're not getting out of there at 8m.

To the Sync Light Dancers - AKA The Game Announcers + MC + Some people at the scoring table, that was awesome. Sorry I wouldn't do it with you when the web cast was pointed at you guys :)

Thanks to everyone at 1902 for letting me crash the 1902 party it was tons of fun!

I'm sure I'm forgetting some people but I'm still beat. So thanks to everyone I may have missed.

I hope to get the pictures uploaded processed and posted before next weekend. I'll post links when they are all available for viewing.

We wish to thank Swamp for picking us. We were very fortunate to "ride the coat tails" of 179 and 1649 to the victory. This was a different position than we usually have on an alliance, but hey, it still counts as a victory. To be honest, we didn't demonstrate much to gain the confidence you guys had to invite us onto your alliance. Swamp and EMS, you both have great robots and great teams. We hope to have more of a "scoring machine" by Denver and Atlanta, but for now, we're glad we were able to provide enough "defensive driving" and skillful ball throwing to help the alliance win.

This was a great regional like always, I enjoyed seeing the great teams and great robots you always can expect here. Congratulations to all award winners including 179, 233, and 1649. I hope you all rest up today. Good luck in Atlanta.

This regional was really amazing! Congrats to 179, 1649, and 233. Thank You to 79 KRUNCH and 1251 Tech Tigers. You were such amazing parters and we worked so well together. The tenative score was so close I thought it would be a tie (because it always is when we're in the finals) i was seriously wondering why the robots were being taken off of the field.

While I'm sitting here in the airport waiting for my flight home I just want to take the time to thank the Austin family for inviting me into their home and allowing me to spend a week being a part of the family.
It was a wonderful experience hanging out with Exploding Bacon and made me appreciate them all the more. They are truly a gracious and awesome team.
The regional itself was terrific and has done the n=best job so far of mastering the new system and keeping on schedule that I have seen so far this year.
Good work guys!
Hopefully I will be able to return next year....if you'll have me...:D

To: 1557 for a well deserved Regional Chairman's award.
To: 179 and it's partners 233 and 1649 for an exciting win.
To: 744, 79 and 1251 for almost carrying the day.
and to 1902 for their hospitality.

And many thanks to all of the officials and volunteers who made this a great and memorable FIRST event. The pit setup in the old arena and field in the new arena were perfect. Thanks UCF!

Re: 2009 Florida Regional

Another year, Another great Florida Regional. The finals, and the final match in particular were extremely close and were the funnest matches I've ever been apart of.

I want to send out a huge thanks to 179 and 1649 for picking us. We were definitely happy to be picked by two teams that had such awesome robots. Working with you guys was amazing and I feel like our three teams had zero problems working together. I want to send out a special thanks to 179's driver, Cody (sorry if I didn't remember the right name!). He was a huge help and gave some experienced tips and just kept the atmosphere very light-hearted that really kept my nerves down while on the field.

I want to send a super huge thanks to all the Pink alumni that came out the event. Gabe was a huge help on the scouting and strategy all throughout the elimination matches and Duke was a huge help to me as a driver. He helped me keep everything in perspective, and helped me keep my confidence up and gave me some great tips on driver mentality.

744, 79, and 1251 created the most thrilling best of three I have ever been apart of. After two (somewhat) lopsided victories our alliance barely squeezed out the win. I respect all three of those teams greatly and hope top see them out on the field later in the season. If there was nay alliance I wanted to lose to, it would be that alliance.

As always thanks to all the volunteers and people who ran this event, it was great.

The Florida regional was a great time. Special thanks to 1902 and 408 for helping us get our wonderful robot out in time and so many other things. 233,1649 and 179 you guys played tough and deserved the win congratulations. 744 and 79 thank you for picking 1251 as your 2nd pick we appreciate and enjoyed the opportunity to work with two amazing teams. To all the volunteers most of whom are my friends thanks for making the Fl regional one of the best again. Congrats to 1557 on the chairmans win. See everyone in Atlanta.

Re: 2009 Florida Regional

I got a few thanks/Congrats to give out as well

Michelle: without you i wouldn't have as much fun as i did over the weekend, and actually, i wouldn't be able to attend the regional itself

Teams 233, 179, Congrats on winning the Florida regional once again, you guys are starting to become the Florida version of 25 and 103, and i mean in the winning fashion

Team 1649 and 1557, I've seen you guys come a far way, I remember when i was with team 1402, and we drove to your schools to present the FIRST Robotics program. Not to mention us sort of kind of mentoring you guys along. Both of you have grown very quickly and i am amazed at all the work you guys have done and how far each of you have come along. from the. for 1557, winning the chairman in the first year you guys submitted it. and to 1649, for winning this regional for the second time in four years.

Teams 1557 (again), and 1902: you guys made great alliance partners for team 945. all of us did a great job together

Teams 25 and 103: Thanks for coming out to this regional, I know a lot of people on 25 now and have become good friends through previous events. It was great seeing everyone again.

a quick shoutout for everyone else who came from out of state: (Nica/ Koko Ed, / 238 / 501 / 1616 / 1612 / 1885 / 1922 / sorry if i missed you, running on fumes right now)

To all the people behind the scenes higher up than me: everyone did a amazing job to keeping the event managed excellently and i was amazed to how well the event was actually run. Im proud to be part of the volunteer.

Team 1902 (again) and team 86: thanks for letting me come to your party after the event, i had a great time and this was one of the many bright points of the weekend

Teams 79, 744, and 1251: you guys gave the winning alliance a good run for their money. some people mentioned Tempest In Tampa and the whole Tie thing, also noticing at the end of the third match, the score was tied 78-78.... It was THAT close. I hope all of you guys do GREAT at Championships.

I know im missing a lot of thanks/congrats, but be sure i appreciate everything that everyone did at this event.

I was really excited to see how well the new venues worked out. I seemed to get a good amount of feedback from teams and I think now that we've gotten our feet wet with having 2 venues we will have an even better event next year, I'm really excited about those possibilities.

As always, I need to say thanks to all of my volunteers... there's no way we could do it without any of you. Congrats to Melinda Hester for winning the 'Volunteer of the Year' award and James Jones for WFA, I've gotten to know both of them over the years and both of them definitely deserved their awards. Great job to all the teams, those were some amazing finals matches to watch. Hope you all had fun and can't wait for next year!

Re: 2009 Florida Regional

I'd like to thank all the Volunteers, refs, judges and announcers. It was a great smooth running venue, and the nicest regional I've been to. Field never gave us trouble in our matches. Everything was right on time. Reffing was accurate. Field turnover was quick and not stressfull, the lead field guy was stern but nice. The announcing was really good by all of them.

Thanks to SPAM for the scouting help, it definitely revealed some things. I'm sorry we didn't get to run that alliance, it might have worked but we needed a stronger scorer than us. I really enjoyed our scouting meeting, you guys are very organized. Congrats to James for the WFA, he's the MAN!

1649.. WOW. I looked at your bot on Thursday morning and told some people in your pit you guys were going to do really well. It reminded us of 1625, and then when you were playing 180 in that repeat (last match of the day) that's when I was sold. You guys totaly rocked.

233.. As usual, we just love you guys. I love working with Andy and Gabe and Kit etc. The laid back confidence and focus on strategy is what works in the heat of it all. You're drivers were solid, confident and professional.

79.. Love you guys too. Amazing machine and excellent drivers. I'm still wondering how we beat you. Not to mention knocking off 103 and 25 was unbelieveable

744.. Beautiful machine, we had you and 79 as our top picks and statistical top scorers at the regional. Great job and Great games!

1251.. Thanks for letting us win for once.. That was a great strategy you pulled on us in the second match. Excellent driving, plus you scored a bunch on us. There was no way to win that. Again I still don't know how we did it in the 3rd. I can't wait to see some video.

1345.. Your students are very inspiring hard workers. I'm proud of you guys. I'm sorry we couldn't hook up in the end, we needed a strong defender but it was awesome playing you guys. That was a scary alliance with 238 and 501. I loved the simultaneuos score, can't wait to see that video either.

I'm extremely proud of my team and the hard work they all put in this year. Thank you to all of you. Also Sean, my driver is a senior and I had the pleasure of working with him 4 years. A very talented great young man. I can't get his parents to hold him back another year so now we need a new driver.

Thanks to everyone I didn't mention, but you know I love you!

Re: 2009 Florida Regional

Congrats to all of the regional winners! 233 is a true inspiration with their persistence and never-quit attitudes! Their bot is truly amazing, though this year it's more for the fact that it holds so many examples of great engineering and so so many solutions to problems that teams face during build season.

There were also several other well designed robots there, who I stole snapshots of great ideas from ;). There was so much creative use of materials that blended well with the overall appearance of the robot.

We'd like to give a huge thank you to 1902, who not only put on a party, took care of us in the pits with tools, and cheered for us, but they also helped us with lunch all three days of competition. Special thanks to Ryan and Wendy for coordinating with us in advance. The flying pig on our hopper will still be there when we see you in Atlanta

It was nice to see Ed (again), Kit and Gabe in person, and I'm sure I saw many others in the CD community there without realizing it.

We'll see everyone in Atlanta!

I would just like to thank 1902 for being their awesome selves and for all the things they have done for us. They have showed amazing graciousness and really are an amazing team. If you wanted to pass out the sentiment to Sean that'd be awesome. You were definitely huge though. Too many alliances forgo communicaitng during the match, keeping communication was, in my opinion, one of the stronger features of out alliance. Lord knows as soon as I heard the word supercell I got out of those corners! or at least tried to might have sucked once or twice though.
