2009 Chesapeake Regional
The questions keep coming. I wish I could be more helpful with pointing the way to some answers, but am going to be out of the loop for a few weeks.
I understand how many factors need to be considered by a team when choosing a Regional. Please monitor Bill's Blog for updates and advice. http://frcdirector.blogspot.com/ A volunteer will be updating the Chesapeake Website. This should be the place to find info on logistics and volunteering. |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
We were looking at the Chesapeake website and we noticed that it had dates for the 2009 regional at the USNA.
http://www.chesapeakefirst.org/regio...venueusna.html I was under the impression that the regional would be taking place somewhere in Baltimore this year because of some sort of problem last year. Is my memory faulty? Is is still at the USNA? |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
The Chesapeake Regional will still be at USNA for 2009.

Hotels: PM me if you need the direct phone numbers.
The Annapolis Conference and Visitors Bureau can serve as a clearinghouse to assist the teams seeking hotels. http://www.visitannapolis.org/ • Joyce Baki – jbaki@visitannapolis.org • Jo McNees – jmcnees@visitannapolis.org • Melanie Muench – mmuench@visitannapolis.org Joyce and her team have assisted many teams the past two years. Teams have already started making reservations. Annapolis has been chosen by National Geographic Adventure magazine as one of the country's top ten waterfront towns! |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Many of our veterans have grumbled that we won't be making the trip back to Annapolis this year--it was a blast last year (and the year before, when I went as a volunteer and nearly froze my butt off trying to scrape ice off the car). If you're looking for a fun second regional (or first, for that matter), this is the one. (The team also highly recommends the Doubletree up there--after a few days of spring break sleeping in a New York hostel right before the regional, those beds were -heavenly-.)

Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Hi all
This is the first time my team is coming to the Chesapeake regional. I was just wondering what is the closest hotel to the venue and how far away it is. Thanks |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Quote:
The Visitor's Bureau (see post above) can be a big help with questions like this. I know the British teams contact has already been talking with them. There are 2-3 larger hotels less than 1 km, but they tend to be more expensive. |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Thanks for that. Also just wondering whether there will be a "Team Showcase." I saw something on cd about this topic.
|
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Quote:
The Team Showcase got great reviews last year, so the committee will definitely be discussing the feasibility this year, given space constraints, time, and potential conflicts. Once the planning committee has this sorted out, the information will be posted here and sent to teams and on the website. So stay tuned. |

out to the teams
2009 Chesapeake "Team Showcase" Each year the planning committee receives requests from the teams for space to put up a booth or table, to demonstrate a product, to make a presentation on center stage, to show a video, to conduct a charity drive or to give-away cool stuff. We are impressed by the creativity and initiative shown by the teams. However, with 60+ teams at Chesapeake, we have a shortage of space, and need to establish policies that are fair and consistent for all the teams. Last year we held a successful Team Showcase, and we are pleased to announce the 2009 Chesapeake Team Showcase. The first 20 teams who register will be assigned a one-hour time slot on Thursday March 19, between 9-7 pm, starting on the hour. The team will be allowed a standard 2' by 6' table at a site TBD (in the pits). Two teams at two tables will be featured in the Showcase at the same time. Teams will be responsible for staffing this table during their assigned hour. They may display a banner on the front of the table (need to bring own tape, etc.) They may give-away items fitting the guidelines listed here under Chesapeake Regional-Site Information: http://usfirst.org/community/frc/reg...ts.aspx?id=430 They may demonstrate a product, conduct a training session or run a charity collection drive. No selling of products or selling/giving out food is allowed. The team needs to supply all equipment needed. To register, send Jenny Beatty jbeatty@usfirst.org 1. Team #, 2. Team contact for the Showcase, with their email address 3. Brief description of what your team would like to do during your 59 minutes-2-3 sentences max. An agenda of the Showcase will be given to all the teams at the Chesapeake Regional and hourly announcements will be made in the pits. We will rely on the cooperation of the teams participating to make it work. We will only be able to accommodate the first 20 teams who sign up. |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Chesapeake Update #2 out to the teams attending, including the following:
No Official Team Social Recruiting for Student Singers Recruiting for Student Ambassadors Still space for Team Showcase teams (see post above) USNA website with required bus forms will be update soon. |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Team 2016 is pleased to announce that we will be giving out $200.00 gift certificates for AndyMark products as prizes for our First Annual Eyeglass and Hearing Aid Drive. We will award one certificate to the team that brings in the most items at the New Jersey Regional and another at the Chesapeake Regional.
AndyMark, Inc. is an official supplier of parts for F.I.R.S.T. teams. We felt that any team could benefit from being able to order spare, upgrade, or replacement parts and AndyMark agreed! As representatives of Ewing High School and Marie Katzenbach School for the Deaf, we take great pride in working with the Lions Club International at their New Jersey Regional Eyeglass Recycling Center. This is one of only seven such centers in America, and our students are involved with processing glasses here on our campus as part of our ongoing Community Service Projects. Please help us get students involved in collecting unused eyeglasses and hearing aids in their own schools and donating them for this worthy cause. Contact us at: Goteam2016@comcast.net |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
I look forward to attending this year with 1884, all the way from London. Looks like a good bunch of teams registered this year. Should be a load of fun.

Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Hey everyone!
1511 is looking for a few people that are willing to help us with data entry on our scouting system at Chesapeake. If you'd like to look at our current scouting system (all on laptops), take a look at this thread:: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=75264 If you're interested in helping us out, please PM me so we don't fill up the thread. It would be greatly appreciated. :D |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Is Chesapeake a quiet regional? I'm wondering because this is the quietest regional thread on CD!
Team 1511 is very excited to be heading down to Annapolis for the very first time! So many new teams for us to meet! We are looking forward to the competition and to the team social hosted by team 75! (Does Team 75 ever sleep?) I know we can't wait to play with the Duct Tape Bandits again! And the Technowarriors and Division by Zero! And the rest of you that are new to us! Our great programming mentors will be available to trouble shoot any issues you have in getting connected to the field. They've been busy at the Fingerlakes Regional and in Pittsburgh, so I think they've seen about every possible problem now! We will be part of the Team Showcase on Thursday at noon! So come on up and say hi to us then, or anytime this weekend in our Red Camo covered pit! |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Rolling Thunder! Its great that you're coming to Chesapeake! I'm with REX, and we both went to Philadelphia last year. And believe me, we've been going to Chesapeake for three years and it is NOT quiet! Anyway we all welcome you guys to Chesapeake.
|
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Since they're busy packing.....
Our NEOFRA partners, the Girard RoboCats of Team 379, will be representing the great state of Ohio in Maryland this week, bringing with them their usual team spirit and high energy. Their on-field performance improved greatly in Pittsburgh, so look for them to be very much in the mix at Chesapeake. Good luck 379 and to all teams competing in Annapolis this week! |

Unless you want quiet and then you walk out the doors to Halsey and sit on the seawall!:) Bring earplugs! (We've got Blair causing trouble this year....) Time for the last RoboMom reminders: We are really excited to have the 55 teams from 9 states + DC + England! We have teams representing 1992 and every year from 1995-2009! Early Load-In: 7:45-8:30 am on Thursday March 19 for 3 team members (including at least 1 adult who can sign official paperwork). Please only carry in the hand tools needed to uncrate your robot and BRING SAFETY GLASSES. All other carts, bins, pit decorations, etc will need to wait for 8:30 all team access and will be asked to wait outside. Regular Load-In: There will be about 1200 people waiting in the mosh pit outside Halsey between 7:30-8:30. Please follow the directions of the AmeriCorps volunteers who will be directing your buses and tool trucks to unload before the entrance to Halsey and will direct your team where to wait in line. Dress for the weather and bring your sense of humor. The doors will open for all at 8:30 am. Load-in is through 30" doors at the entrance to Halsey. All buses and tool vehicles must enter and exit through Gate 8 (not Gate 1 which is next to Halsey). Foot traffic may be dropped outside Gate 1, but you will have to go through Security. Drivers Meeting Mandatory meeting for members of your drive team Thursday March 19 at 9:15 am on the field and AGAIN after practice matches. A "cheat sheet" reminders for connecting your robot to the field at competition based on current field procedures has been posted on the chiefdelphi forums. Although this is not an “official” FIRST document you may find it very helpful to your team. Any updates to procedures will be covered at the driver’s meeting on Thursday. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/2226? Safety Glasses Loaner Safety Glasses will be in short supply and available only for guests. Teams need to bring enough glasses for their entire team and individual team members need to be responsible for keeping glasses with them. Consider yourself warned. Food We let you bring in your own food to the pits so feel free to set up those buffet lines and invite me! Seriously, this is a great perk not available at most Regionals. Please help us by NOT EATING IN THE STANDS and cleaning up your mess in the pits. Especially Sat. during final clean-up, when some of us are there long after you have left wondering why you left me and the other volunteers such a mess to clean up. Practice Field Bring Ethernet cables needed for practice field. There will be specific instructions for Practice Field based on lessons learned at other Regionals at the 9:15 am Thursday Drivers meeting. Robots must pass pre-inspection and WPA checks before being allowed to practice. Practice field will open and scheduled practice rounds on the official field begin at about 10:00 AM, after the Drivers meeting. Venue • Access to the USNA by bus, van, or on foot, parking, shuttle bus schedule [NOW POSTED], venue map: http://www.usna.edu/FIRST/ NOTE: 1st shuttles of the day are intended for use by the volunteers. Shuttles are provided for the spectators and volunteers, and not for entire teams. • No wireless. Student Volunteers: • We welcome the participation of student singers for opening ceremonies, and student ambassadors for VIP tours. Training will be on Thursday. Announcements will be made in the pits. Safe travels all! |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Things to do during your breaks:
Visit the Visitors Center also in Halsey and look at the exhibits, including the mock up of a mid's room. Buy something in the gift shop. Walk over to look at the Rotunda of Bancroft Hall. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bancroft_Hall Midshipmen are on vacation so no noon time formation. Walk out Gate 1 and down to City Dock, 5 minutes away. Make sure you have id to get back in, and if you are under 16, need to be with an adult to get back through Security. |

Stop by the Lunacy simulator in Halsey.
The exhibit is being put on by WPI students and Lockheed Martin. Bring a couple of friends and try for high score. Be one of the high scoring alliances and come back to compete in a play-off. Blake |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
I am so excited! I always love going to new regionals and I hear that this is one I won't want to miss. If you're a CD person, come up and introduce yourself! I will be on Field reset thursday. Friday and Saturday I will be coaching 1511. And did I hear Blair would be attending? This is a regional I'm quite excited for. Good luck to all the teams! See you on the field.

Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
I've just arrived in Annapolis, and the rest of 1884 is on a bus somewhere between here and DC as I type! We will be doing the DC tourist thing tomorrow (well, I'll be doing the DC tour guide thing) and be ready to rock the regional on Thursday!

Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
I've been perusing around CD as well as the FIRST website and have been unable to find any information about a possible webcast for this event. Will there be a webcast for Chesapeake, and if so, will it be available on SOAP Gameday?
Thanks for the help! Also, my team, 2079 ALARM, is very excited to attend this event! We are making the trip down from the Boston area, and are greatly anticipating this regional. It appears as though there are a significant amount of teams that are traveling long distances to attend, and it appears as though the field is pretty strong as well. Good luck to all! |
Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
We've, like the Robobees, have been attending the Chesapeake since it started in '03. It is an intimate venue ... much smaller than say the DC Convention Center, but lends itself well for making new friends. There's ample seating on both sides of the field, and on one end there is balcony seating.
We are a local team, Edgewater is just south of Annapolis. I live just 10 minutes away from the Naval Academy. If you need advice on where to go for parts, supplies, food or fun, just stop by our pit (Team 1111 - the Powerhawks). And it will get loud! Chesapeake Rocks!! Thanks to all you volunteers who are traveling in to make this happen. And I look forward to seeing the Pit Divas again. Chesapeake has the best pit table around. Hope all the teams have a safe trip into Annapolis. |

But when it comes to websites, that isn't always the best way to design. I love your site the way it is. I also feel thier is a national chairmans award in your near future. Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
2199 would like to thank 40 and 134 for being excellent alliance partners.
Congratulations to 2866 for rising from the ashes of Thursdays troubles and becoming a fantastic defensive specialist and evading major dumpings. Have fun in Atlanta! Also, congrats to the regional champions. Every match was a nail biter with you guys. |

Their little flat bot was a speedy bugger, and played a mean defensive game, earning them a rank of 3 in the quals. They picked their partners well and ended up getting to the semis. As their mentor was fond of saying, "this isn't just a victory for 2866, it is a victory for FIRST". Good job to those that showed true Gracious professionalism in getting their bot up and running! In other news, 836, the Robobees won the Chesapeake Virtual Competition. Alex, Jon, and Raymond edged out Tim, Joe, and Franklin of 2483, the Clawbotz after a hard fought 8-team 24 player virtual tournament using 5th Gear. |

Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Thank you Chesapeake for being such wonderful hosts. I'd like to thank Team 75 for a great social (I'm one of the "old guys" who couldn't help but dance), and the USNA for being such tolerant and gracious hosts. The venue logistics worked out well, and the volume was appropriate throughout the event.
We are honored that the Chesapeake judges saw fit to award us with Website, Imagery and especially Chairman's award. We look forward to carrying the Chesapeake flag on to chairman's finals in Atlanta. It was an altogether fun regional and I saw just example after example of Gracious Professionalism on and off the field. |

Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
I have to say for our first year in Chesapeake it really was an awesome experience! Thank you to 2641 for picking us and 1884 for joining our alliance. I think we didn't do too badly against a first seeded team. I know some of you guys were wondering how the score changed from 66-55 to 70-72 and I talked to the head ref after and it was simply really bad real time scoring. Thanks again to 75 for the team social, it was a real treat!
See you all in Atlanta! |

Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
Wow, where to start? First of all, we want to formally welcome and congratulate our rookie "babies," Team 2866 Project Mayhem (their head mentor told a reporter that we got them into this "mess"...lol). They really did have a difficult build season, with a defective control station out of the box, a flood in their room, and other things going on, in addition to what we all go through - but we promised them things would get better and our FIRST friends came through to make it happen! Thanks to ALL the teams who came over to help 2866 (more than I can remember!) and devoted hours to them throughout the weekend, especially 75, 2199 and 2377.
To Team 1195 - thanks for choosing us and 1893 as alliance partners. We had a wonderful time playing with you, and winning the Championship was just the icing on the cake! To Team 1893 - as always good friends, good partners and good competitors...congratulations on helping make our alliance a winner! BAA Rocks! To Team 75 - once again, thanks for helping our rookies out, your team is just the greatest, and congrats on winning EI. To our friends from 1511 - we were so sad that we couldn't make it to FLR, so having you come down to our home turf was so much fun...but then getting to cheer for your Website, Imagery and CA wins - what a great time we had! Thanks for the camo ball, we will display it proudly in our trophy case! To David Kelley of Team 134 - congrats on winning WFA. We talked to some of your team, and they can't say enough wonderful things about you. To Jason, Justin and the rest of 340 and 424 - thanks for the congrats and good wishes for our team and family, which actually included 4 generations (Jenny was wrong!). Greg's team 2775 did wonderfully in St. Louis, too - they ended up Finalists in tough competition, plus they won Rookie High Seed and Rookie All Star. To Andy and Blair - thanks for being our emcee/announcer team, you made the event really fun. Blair, we had a visitor who said she thought she'd wandered into a hockey game by mistake ;-) To everyone who came to the Chesapeake Regional, we hope you had a great time! Good luck for the rest of the season! Robyn |

Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
We had a blast this weekend.
Thanks team 2866 for picking us!! We'll do what we can to get you all to the Championship event. To team 75, we had a great time playing with and against you all weekend. Our two teams work really well with each other. We hope to be able to play with you again soon! Congratulations to teams 1195, 1893, and 768! The Chesapeake finals were the most exciting matches I've seen yet this year. Way to keep us on the edge of our seats. Team 1511, you all were very deserving of the Chairman's award! |

Re: 2009 Chesapeake Regional
I stopped by on Saturday for my first regional experience after graduating. I have to say, from that perspective, we look kind of crazy :D
After some time away from FIRST, it was great to see some familiar faces and brand new teams. Lunacy was so much better to watch in person than on webcam! Great regional, and thanks to everyone who made it that way! |
