While making a presentation a couple of nights ago, I had to digitize some archived video. While doing this, I ran across some gems and decided to upload them to Youtube. You all may get a kick out of some of these.

1. 1992 Maize Craze final match
Clinton Nypro (now 126) vs WPI (now 190) vs Wheeling HS (now part of 111) vs Delco & Kokomo HS (now 45)

2. 1993 Ruge Rage match
I don't know who is all in this match, but the low-profile aluminum bot with the removable cage for balls is Kokomo's.

3. 1994 Final Match
Here is a bit of ESPN's coverage of the 1994 Championships. This is final match #1. Sunny Delight goes on to win match 2.

4. 1995 US FIRST Promotional video
Veterans - look for Mike Bastoni and John Viltro in this one. There are some great quotes from Dean in here regarding why engineers and mentors are key resources to FIRST teams.

5. 1996 ESPN Coverage

Outstanding coverage by ESPN.

6. 1997 Final match between ChiefDelphi (now 47) and Beatty Hammond (now 71).

7. 1998 Semi-final match between TechnoKats (45) and HOT (67). This was a clip from the ESPN coverage. You may recognize both coaches on the TechnoKats.

8. Here is a clip from a 1999 documentary involving the TechnoKats (45). Robot to robot action was brutal that year.

9. Here is a 2000 Championship Quarterfinal match where 126 and 131 pulls off a big upset to beat 47 and 312. Notice 47's basket breaking right at the end. Notice a few robot drivers who are still around today.

10. This is the legendary "710 match" from the 2001 Midwest Regional finals. I recognize a few drivers in this match too.

11. 2002 Semi-final match from the Championships. Notice that team 60 has the advantage early in the match, but then 71 inches their way to the right zone over the next 70-80 seconds. 66 knew how to help 71, but 60 and 144 had no choice, even with 500 pounds weighing down team 60. Amazing.

12. 2003 Semifinal match from the Championships. This was the first year of auto-mode. Notice what 111's robot does. Yes, they knocked down all of their opponent's stacked totes and then climbed the ramp in auto.

13. Dr. Woodie Flowers give his best shot here of describing the 2003 game, Stack Attack. If you hear this once, and you understand it totally, give yourself a cookie.

14. 2004 Quarterfinals at Midwest Regional. 93 thought they had 45's robot blocked. This is what a roller claw will do.

15. Ken Patton interview from 1997 (Ken looks like he is 20!)

I have a (very short) video from Rumble At The Rock I need to capture one of these days. I actually have all the hardware to do it finally!
Maybe in November when I can actually sit down at home for more than an hour at a time I can get that done & uploaded.

I'm sure the FIRST community would appreciate that footage of the first offseason competition! :cool:

Why is there no longer any ESPN coverage?

I remember hearing something about why there wasn't any CNN coverage this year, is this the same case as ESPN?:confused:

Thanks for the uploads, though. Very fun to see FIRST in it's early years. I especially enjoyed the ESPN coverage. I really hope they decide to do it again.

1998 was the last year that FIRST was covered by ESPN.

I really don't know why it stopped for sure. However, I will make a guess. Like many other tough decisions, it was probably about the money.

In 1999, FIRST asked about 20-30 teams to supply video footage so they can put together a documentary. A documentary producer ended up creating a 30 minute video that was very good. When FIRST went to ESPN to get the video aired, ESPN pushed back and wanted to blur out the corporate sponsor logos on the robots, flags, t-shirts, and such. Essentially, ESPN did not want to help advertise for these companies without being paid.

I didn't understand this at the time, and still don't quite understand it. Of course, sporting events have all kinds of corporate sponsors, and each one of them can't be paying ESPN. However, there is a high dollar contract with each sporting administration to pay ESPN for the coverage.

I suppose that FIRST could not afford this same sort of payment for a contract.

That's my best guess.

Ughh... Crazy times!! I was coaching that match... or... attempting to.
We barely got out of autonomous & then that happened.

Needless to say, I let out a rather high pitched scream, looked at my drivers who just started laughing, & we all thought that was the coolest darn thing we saw that season, even if it meant we were out of the match... :rolleyes:

Tremendous! I've recently been trying to think of a way to get all old FIRST footage together, have one central place to either link/search/find old FIRST videos, like a specific FIRST youtube. The blue alliance or something like that would work, but teams would have access to easy uploads and what not, it might just be easier to use Youtube and link in these forums or something.

Oh goodness, watching the 1999 game almost seems surreal when compared to now. Robots deliberately trying to tip each other... oh, how times have changed.

Great videos, I must say! I've always been interested in the history of the games at FIRST, and I think that this is a great compilation.

Woddie Flowers, 13 years ago......It's just insane how much FIRST has endured throughout the years.

"20 team, 30-odd teams, 49 team, 60 teams"

That's untill 1994.

12 years later, it's multiplied by almost 30: +1503 teams and not just in the USA, but around the world in 7 other countires (and soon [really hopefully that even this coming year] to be 8).

FIRST is having a very steady increase in it's impact, and I firmly believe that towards the end of this 2000 decade, we should see a more inclined increase in the number of students, number of teams and number of regions participating in FIRST competitions.

Just listeneing to the qoutes of one of the team mentors from 1994, saying that they "don't know what these components are or do, this is a new type of technology" makes me feel more eager towards the upcoming 2009 season.

These vids are really good for various perspective, such that I've realised the use of the FIRST wheels as a "suction" and "release" for ball games was present even 12 years ago, in the 1996 Hex game. If we'd seen these footage before, I'm sure we'd probablly take into consideration that manipulator for our 2008 robot.

Can someone explain the change around '99/2000? I notice that around that timeframe the quality of the machines and the "FIRST" experience very closely resembles today. Before that it was significantly different.

I would guess several things led to this "change". First, alliances really became the standard. The size of the field also became the standard rectangle (measuring 54' by 24' for the two-on-two games I believe).

Most importantly was the introduction of the IFI control system. Compared to previous years, it became relatively easy to wire and program your robot. Probably the most notable similarity is the field control system. If you have ever taken the time to look at the blinking lights and the LED displays for the match times, you will see that they have in fact not changed since 2000 (in many cases, it is the same physical hardware).

Basically around that time, the FIRST experience as we know it began: alliances of two (or three I suppose) with about 2 minute matches on the IFI field controller.

The last big field redesign was for 2005; before that, there were smaller changes from a design that first appeared in 2000. I'm of the persuasion that FIRST will keep this field until they actually go to a water game. It goes together a lot easier than the 2004 field did, as I recall, and it's very easily reconfigured. Even if the GDC went completely bonkers and did 4v4, they'd be covered; just build another player station, and you're good.

I hope the Discovery channel coverage becomes more widespread... I really enjoyed how they did the canada regional this year... I think it's on par with the ESPN coverage from days of old.

Eh.... 60 was definitely not a kiwi in 02... 60 was the yellow robot in video 11. It's goal grabbing arms could spin the goal once it was lifted.

I might of missed it when I looked around but does anyone have any footage from the finals in 2002. 180 vs 71 is something specific I'm looking for. I was actually at champs that year, but did not see the finals :-( I've always wanted to see it. From first hand recounts of those who wittnessed it, it sounds epic.

In going through old team videotapes, 48 found some Beta SP recordings that we could not convert ourselves - we had no real idea what was on them. Luckily, Al Skierkiewicz of 111 was happy to convert them to DVD for us - thanks, Al!

What we appear to have is some raw, extended behind the scenes footage of the 1999 FIRST Championship elimination rounds, centering around the Technokats, Andy Baker, and their beastly-armed robot, TKO. I think this was a Delphi-commissioned camera focusing on the exploits of the Delphi teams at the event that year. We've got match footage of the brutal action. We've got students and mentors reacting to the highs and lows of winning and losing. We've got winning alliance celebration footage and interviews with 48's drive team and coach following the finals (we were part of the winning alliance with 176 and 1 even though we never got into a match - 176 and 1 had to be robust as heck for that to happen!).

We've got the star of the show - (high school student?) Andy Baker ("Andy - less talk, more work!" - Technokats student - classic!), Mark Koors, Raul Olivera, Dan Green, Woodie Flowers, Dean Kamen, and cameos from such people as Ken Patton, John Novak, Brian Beatty, and Chris Noble, among others.

We've got looks at robots from 45, 111, 84, 176, 1, 48, 131, 157, 16, 68, 27, and 71, among others.

I've got 5 of the 6 initial vids up. I'll have more of the closing ceremonies a bit later, including most of the awards (233, 254, and 291 receiving awards, among others), part of Dean's speech - the cameraman cut him off, for some reason ;) , and even the Disney-produced laser light/smoke/flame/stilt walker/scantily-clad dance team/Y2K-bug themed spectacle that wrapped up the Closing Ceremonies, just prior to the start of the wrap party within Epcot.

If you've never seen what Disney and the Einstein stage/stadium were like at Epcot Center, these videos will give you an idea. Enjoy!

Feel free to check out other old match videos on the same channel - I've already put up a lot of vids from 2000-2005 (sorry for the audio cuts in certain videos - I wish YouTube would just cut the portions of the audio track that have copyrighted music and not the whole dang thing).

After spending the last 2 years just looking at our 1999 robot, sitting in it's case in the corner of our shop, I was dying to see some footage of it in action, but could never find any. Definitely very, very cool :D
