NEW MACBOOK!!!!

So, For all of you that don't know.

Apple has launched a new book design. It's very aesthetic and environmental friendly. Go to www.apple.com and check it out.

My question is how do you right click??!?!?!?!? :D.

What do you mean environmentally friendly? Better power consumption?

As far as the manufacturing process, the cases are milled out, or so I heard, so that's not so environmentally friendly using all that cutting fluid to do that.

I ordered my new Macbook Pro about 10 minutes ago.

It should arrive October 20-22.

Totally Excited. I've been waiting for this day since around July.

If you have two fingers down on the trackpad of the current MacBook Pros it registers that as a right click. Also if you swipe with two fingers it registers that as a wheel scroll.

They are looking really nice these days, and since they run normal CPUs you can put a normal operating system on them if you desire.... ;)

Mac OS isn't a "normal" operating system?

In another year or two when it comes time to replace my laptop, the new 13" MacBook just shot to the top of my short list of potential computers (sorry Lenovo).

You can either use the two finger method, or you can configure a set area of the trackpad to act as a "right click area", meaning that anytime you click in that area it acts as a right click.

So normal means needing to reinstall every eight to twelve months to keep running good?

If that's the case then OSX certainly isn't normal since I've only had to reinstall it once in five years. ;-)

MrForbes 14-10-2008 20:24

Re: NEW MACBOOK!!!!

Actually "normal" means an OS that will run LabView and Inventor....

Re: NEW MACBOOK!!!!

I'm not sure how I feel about these. I've been pumped for the announcement ever since the rumor mills started flowing a few weeks ago.

I LOVE the new trackpad (obviously, who wouldn't), but aesthetically they get a "meh" out of 5 from me. Two toning with the keyboards just doesn't fit the Mac style IMO (all the way back to when they had the green base with black keyboard on the old iMacs), and lack of a matte option for the screens is a big fault on their part. The GPU upgrade to two separate chipsets is an awesome touch, and the 'brick' style of manufacturing has supposedly caused it to feel extremely solid and robust.

Overall though, I still prefer my MacBook Pro (which I guess is "last gen" now). The GPU difference would've been nice, and I'll check the campus Apple store tomorrow to see how they look in person, but I'm stickin' to my guns for now.

Cool video demonstrating the new MacBook fabrication:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJnd8KVhkdo

This monocoque (unibody is just lame ;) ) design looks really cool. Would a nice mechanical guy estimate how much does it cost to fabricate something like that? Even with huge scale of production it appears to take some time to machine the brick - and it looks like Apple (well, some contracted firm on China - mechanical Foxconn?) is even extruding Aluminum into plates as part of the process.

MrForbes 14-10-2008 22:42

Re: NEW MACBOOK!!!!

I expect it takes quite a bit more energy and machinery to make the case by machining an extrusion vs. casting it. The very tight dimensional tolerances are unnecessary for something like a laptop that will be replaced in a couple years....but stuff like that does seem to appeal to the targeted market segment (mostly folks who are not mechanical engineers, and have sizeable disposable income).

It's a work of art, for sure! :)

btw, thanks for the link to the video

Re: NEW MACBOOK!!!!

I just spoke to the Apple store near me and the new Macbook Pro's just arrived in store today! As soon as I finish work at 6pm I will be buying one. I'm not a huge fan of the gloss screen but I know they make, or will make films to place over the screen to cut down on glare if it is that much of a problem. The price is kinda high but I have been saving for months waiting for these to be released but with the student discount the price is reasonable if you conside all the features it has, heck I would shell out $2,000 any day just so I would never have to be near anything with vista on it.

Give me a track stick any day!

Seriously, do you have anything better to do with your time than to come into a thread about the new notebooks and you just troll it?

Go away. Shoo shoo.

I'm disappointed in the removal of FW 400, I have two external drives, one 400 and one 800 and unless I can get a FW 800 hub w/ 400 ports in it then I can't see myself buying one for awhile.

As I said, FW 800. Not 400.

I have two FW drives. One 400 and one 800. I need to have a 800 hub that has 400 ports on it.

Guys and girls... no more of this fighting.

dual boot mac os and windows. or in my case, triple boot vista, linux, and osx.

Before or after saying the OS is useless, only people who buy it have lots of money and are not engineers, etc, etc. Name one positive comment you made.

You have 3 posts, all trolling and negative. I offer constructive criticism based on my use of computers, including my Mac and PC. If you don't have anything good to say don't post in the thread.

Is "normal" the same as "useless"? Or did you just say that because I equate "normal" with being able to use two programs that are kind of necessary for FIRST, and you think that that makes OSX useless? I sure don't think OSX is useless, and I was pointing out that you can run these programs on the very nice Macbook hardware, even if they won't run natively in OSX.

The video is great, and the computer looks like a really nice machine. I personally don't think it's worth spending $2k on it just to avoid Vista, because I have found less expensive ways to avoid using Vista. And I am happy to offer some of these alternatives to others.

My parents bought a few licenses of XP before they stopped selling them (I don't know if they have yet, actually, but I know they said they were going to) so I can install it on my notebook for college (along with Ubuntu, of course). This license did not cost $2000.

Re: NEW MACBOOK!!!!

*laughs*

Is apple actually serious about the price tag on this thing? :yikes:

No blu-ray? At ONE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS...

>For a hundred dollars less, you can get a Sony Vaio notebook with a blu-ray player, faster performance, Windows XP or Vista (for those of you who'll cry XP on me), Double size harddrive, twice the memory...

>Now, that's a computer that's glitzy like a mac, but if you're like me and don't care what it looks like on the outside... Dell runs $775 for a computer thats still superior in most components (i.e. memory, processor)...

I'm just confused who's going to buy this... don't get me wrong macs are cool... but heating my house this winter is cool too. And when it comes down to it, I'd rather been computing on a cheap laptop in a warm house than have a fancy laptop and be freezing my butt off.

Ha, I find that ironic.

Oh, and you don't have to freeze if you get a fancier laptop; just make sure it generates a LOT of heat so that it becomes your heating (for yourself) in the winter!

I prefer my tablet I paid half as much for with 3x the features ;-)

I mean...how do you beat a 12.1" tablet, 3 GB of RAM, decent video card, 200GB HDD and a decent enough processor (Athlon X2 2.1 GHz Ultra), especially for just taking notes?

Re: NEW MACBOOK!!!!

I love my new Macbook! However, I love the graphics of the new one. I was going to wait to get this model, but I'm glad I went with the blackbook because I do a lot with a firewire 400 port in video editing. It is rumored that you could possibly use a special adapter along with the ethernet port to create a firewire port, however I don't think they put that capability in there. The trackpad is amazing, for a track pad. I'm guessing it will be a lot like using an iPhone/iPod Touch. Now my only concern is how to fit the new graphic's chip into my blackbook. ;)

EDIT: BTW, my major concern about my macbook and now all apple products is the display port. It is a big pain to have to remember to carry an adapter with you when you take your laptop for a presentation. Plus I've heard that they don't last that long. :(

I'm writing this from my new MacBook Pro and I LOVE it! the track pad is amazing and the speed is crazy compared to what I had before.

Re: NEW MACBOOK!!!!

I must say, I have gained a higher appreciation for Apple's designers when I saw the disassembly pictures on iFixit.com. Everything in both the MacBook and the MacBook Pro is put into it neatly, and is easily accessible with the removal of only one cover. This reminds me of the Power Mac G5 and the Mac Pro and how everything inside is so nicely organized with loose cables tucked nicely away. I am truly amazed!! If I had the money, I would buy two Pro's, one for use, and one to tear apart and look at. :D

I'm looking at the designs and I have to say that there certainly more anesteticly pleasing(esp. for the Air). Apple's designers get yet another good design.
