anyone booking hotels yet? If so, where are you residing?
Hotels in NYC seem pretty expensive, especially around the Javits center. Will FIRST teams get a group rate?

For Long Island, New Jersey, and teams within a two hour drive, I would recommend commuting to the NYC Regional.
You can use private or public bus or railroad.
The 34th St. Penn Station is a easy walk to the Javits.
Grand Central Station is a bus ride.
And the Port Authority Bus Terminal is only a short bus or walk away.

If you would like to stay, there are many non-Mahattan hotels available around LaGuardia Airport (the closest), Newark Airport and Kennedy Airport.

There also many hotels in New Jersey that are very close to Manhattan; Hoboken, Weehawken, Secaucus, Meadowland, etc.

Good Luck!

I am sad to report that the two field plan is not likely for 2009.
It is mainly due to the economic situation in NYC.

We are still planning on FRC, FTC, and FLL under the same roof at the Javits Center.

Just a note about shipping spare parts- if it adds a lot to the weight of the crate, you will pay for it!! Teams have gotten big bills for packing too much into their crate.

Since you are bring spare parts and I am not sure what kind of spare parts they are, there are rules on how and when robot spare parts get to the regional.

Since you live in Edison, NJ; that is a hop, ship and jump from Manhattan. You can probably carry some of the stuff.

I hope that helped.

Its actually quite close. 10 blocks downtown (about 1/2 mile for those of you not from NY. I am almost positive that there is a public bus that goes from the Javits Center down to Chelsea Piers.

In memory of Tony Paxton, a great champion of FIRST in NYC and a dedicated volunteer at the NJ Regional and NYC Regional, the NYC volunteers are collecting Team T-shirts to make a special quilt in honor of Tony.

If you wish to contribute, please drop your Team T-shirts off with Thea at the PIT Admin Desk and she will sew the shirts together.

The quilt will be presented to the Tony’s family.

Hi everyone,

Team 694 will be hosting several classes at the Javits Center this weekend, focusing on a wide array of topics. Some examples include PID Control Loops and basic Animation. A detailed description of the schedule can be found here: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/33216 . The classes will be held in a VIP room at the Javits Center and everyone is encouraged to come!

In addition, we will also be hosting a canned food drive to benefit City Harvest (cityharvest.org). We will be collecting canned food at a booth in the career center all three days of competition. Please bring canned food to donate to NYC's hungry! A flyer with more info (sorry about the typo, but I don't want to spam with a reupload...) can be found here: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/33235.

Team 694 thanks everyone for their cooperation and is looking forward to an amazing weekend at the Javits Center.

Bus, van or car drop off:
travelling south on 11th Ave-
from the right lane, after 39th St, turn into the Javits complex and you will be on the lower level and infront of the Javits Center.
There is a dropoff & pickup area for buses and cars along the curb.

You can dropoff from 11th Ave but you have to deal with dangerous traffic.

The competition is on the top B-level and the southern section.

To exit, follow the lower roadway south and around to exit onto 34th St. between 11th and 12 Ave.

Best Wishes.

If anyone wants to trade a team shirt with me, I'll be hanging around the Team 237 pit area, or just ask someone who's there to get in touch with me. I'll take a Large or XL & I have various sizes available to trade (mostly Small & Mediums, but a few Larges & I think one XL left)
Get them while they're hot!

But be the benefit is we are the only FRC regional today!

335, 1156, and especially 2554 (EWCP), that was such sick defensive play on 2344 and 1155. You guys should definitely be proud of yourselves, we are proud of you over here on MORT. :D

Also great job by 1302! Glad to see some MORT teams doing well. You guys played hard and those were great matches.

Update: 1807 is being beastly against 2753's alliance. Guess 1807 really wanted a rematch after our run in Trenton:cool:

Update: 743 is amazing at playing defense, they're shutting out Stuy Pulse. Crazy 1155, 2344, and 743 make a VERY good alliance.

Update: 56 and 1807 took out the #1 alliance, doesn't look like 2753 will get two wins after all =/. Awesome job though guys. Amazing job by 1807. I knew you guys could do it. Just two more matches and you will make my prediction come true from NJ.

Crap....both 1155 and 1807 are in the finals. =( I'm conflicted.

Update: 1807 and 56 just took the first finals match. This is epic. Very close matches. Both alliances have dominating defensive robots on their side. 68-66

Update: BIG CONGRATS TO 1807, 56 and 1796!!! ^_^ (56, Mr. Bodmer says congratulations!) very happy to see our partner from Trenton win it big in NYC!

1155 and 2344 you guys were great the whole weekend. Sucked to see two alliances I really liked playing against each other.

I'd like to throw this in there from a post in the NJ regional thread:

This regional was so much fun! Thank you so much team 56, for selecting us in alliance selection. And 1796, you guys were amazing! We played some really close matches, and i still find it hard to believe that we went 6-0 in elimination matches. Congratulations to 2344, for winning chairmans! Its amazing that a second year team won this award. Everyone did a great job, and i'm looking forward to seeing some of you in Atlanta!

Saturday night i told my parents that if we went 8-0 on Sunday, our 2009 record would be 18 wins, 0 ties, and 7 losses. And it happened just like that. How many teams can say their record is their team number?

Thank you 271 for picking us! We had some great times in NYC, just sorry we couldn't get further.
At least you guys had a bit of a rest before the final match.
Who else can say they were able to just chill in the alliance stations sitting down chatting for about 5-10 minutes before a match started? lol

im not sure if i would call those "breaks" calming. more like: what is going on?/why arent we going?/im nervous about this next match... that happened to my team twice in NJ also.

Yeah. That is a good point.
I'm glad it was only 5-10 minutes or so.
I'm not sure what the problem was (It wasn't as bad as the Field Error with the E-Stop in Boston this past weekend) but my guess is that because we had just brought in a substitute bot for our 3rd alliance partner who was having trouble, we freaked out the system a bit.

Re: 2009 New York City Regional

A big congratulations to teams 56, 1807, and 1796!! Together you made an amazing alliance and one that we considered it a privilege to play against and be beat by! Also congrats to team 2344, you are amazing and deserving of the RCA! We had fun cheering for you and can't wait to see you in Atlanta!! :D Also congrats to all the finalists and all the award winners in NYC. Thank you to all the teams that competed, we had a lot of fun with you all!!

I would especially like to thank our alliance partners; teams 375 and 555. What can I say but that we were honored to be on your alliance and to play our hearts out for you! Keep pressing on with your teams and robots in the future! You both have great teams with high potential and don't let anyone (including yourselves) tell you otherwise! Especially 555, Montclair, you guys are a great team and you can't beat yourselves up for the mistakes that we all make at some point in our lives. It's inevitable, so if you want to be truly great you have to learn from your mistakes and move on! I think you guys proved that you are great by having a stellar performance in the second semi-final match! Keep on going both 375 and 555, you rock!

On a personal note I would like to thank team 56, Robbe Xtreme. When I watched your 2005 team video and drove your robots many times at "Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day" I was inspired! Your team ignited a passion for FIRST in our family and we owe you guys big time! I have to say that when your team picked 1807 (before you even picked your amazing 3rd partners) I said that would be a killer alliance and one that would be tough to beat. And it was nice to know that we were on the top of your list! ;)

To the teams that declined during alliance selection:
I know it sounded like the crowd was "boooooooo"ing from where I was standing on the field, but I was told that actually most of them were just surprised and saying "Oooooohhhhhh" in a low voice. I know that I was clapping and other people were too. You had every right to make that move and everyone who was booing should be ashamed of themselves. Not only does declining show strategic thinking, but it shows that you have guts and aren't afraid to make your own decisions. You should be proud of yourselves!!

So, in conclusion, I want to say thank you to all the volunteers at the NYC competition: field managers, announcers, pit cue people, judges, and anyone else that I'm forgetting.
May the spirit of FIRST live on forever!

i think that the reason most people did that is because that was the first time anyone has ever said no at the new york city regional (i'm 98% sure). when i was out there and i said it i looked up right after making the decision because i knew there would be a big reaction from the crowd.

my team does not regret the choice. because of it we got paired with 395 who was great out there and snag 3111 who just knew how to defend. our alliance didn't get as far as we would have liked but 743 flat out shut down our bot and i give them a lot of credit for that, them and each of their 14 wheals.

i would also like to thank 395 and 3111 for being great alliance partners. i could not believe that 395 was still out there when the pick came to us. they were one of the best scorers out there and it was great being with them. 3111 was one of the best defensive bots this weekend. they scored their first 7 balls very effectively and then played stone cold defense.

Re: 2009 New York City Regional

This past weekend at NYC Jacob Javitz Center was one of the most amazing experiences we have ever had! With a few bumps in the road we managed to do very well on Sunday. We won both of our qualification matches with some decent numbers. We finished overall as the #23 team. As the alliances were being chosen we were all pretty nervous. When teams 56(Robbe Xtreme) and 1807(Redbird Robotics) picked us as their 3rd alliance member, we could not have been any happier.

This was the 4th year that the school has competed in FIRST, but this is the first year we made it into Elimination Matches (and then we took it all the way!!). For the majority of the team, this is their first year being involved with FIRST. With no experience in this position we were extremely nervous and did not know what to expect. Overall we went 6-0 throughout the Elimination Matches which resulted in winning the NYC Regional. We could not have done this without our amazing aliance members (56 & 1807).

Team 56 Robbe Xtreme was an amazing team throughout the whole weekend. Ranked #4 at the end of the qualification matches, they were definitely a team to be reckoned with. The team as a whole was amazing. Their communication was impeccable and unparallel to any team we have ever worked with in the past.

Team 1807 Redbird Robotics was another amazing team. On a side note congratulations on your safety award, you guys really deserved it. They were a powerhouse during the competition. Every 2 seconds all I heard was "and 1807 scores" I would think to myself, thank god they are on our team. We considered them our silent assassin because they were efficient and scored when no one thought they had a chance.

Our hardest match had to have been when we went up against 375, 2753 and 555 in the semi-finals. They were a dominant alliance and it was an honor to have played you guys. We can't wait to compete again with 2753 in Atlanta! They had great sportsmanship and we wish them the best.

Overall we enjoyed playing with both teams and actually were a little saddened when we realized that we might have to go against these teams in Atlanta. We were the underdogs for the most part and we learned that you can never count a robot out.

1807, 56, we truly could not have done it without you. We are at a loss of words of how to describe how amazing you guys were out there. To all of the alliances we played, you made it incredibly fun and competitive.
You have no idea how psyched we are and we wish the best to all the teams.
See you in Atlanta! (Never thought we would be able to say that!)

By the way if anyone has a picture of our alliance when we all got in that picture after we received our awards we would appreciate if you could send it our way. Our team would like it to remember that day and the awesome people that helped get us there.

On behalf of ROBBE XTREME (Team 56) I just wanted to thank 1807 and 1796 for helping us form an alliance to be reckoned with!! We could NOT have done this without both of you. The Elimination matches were the toughest, grittiest matches from any NYC regional in recent years.

It was an amazing rollercoaster ride and kudos to all the competitors , every year we continue to see the NYC regional get bigger, better, and tougher!!

It's now off to the Philly Regional for us, hope to see you guys in Atlanta.

Good Luck!!
