No Way That's Gonna Happen!

Alright, what do you want to see in FRC even though you know there is now way its gonna happen.

Swimming Robots?
Flying Robots?
Flying Monkeys on the Field???

Give us your random ideas, realistic or non-realistic!

Water game is the most unlikely game out of all of that. And there are a number of reasons.

The logistics of that would be HUGE. That would require a complete over haul of rules, material, not to mention building the field at regionals would be crazy.

But the flying monkeys on the field seems...interesting..:D.

give it a try!

My "No Way That's Gonna Happen!" is having a dirty, rocky playing field, like those fortunate extraterrestrial robots get to play on.

if you really want to think outside the box, then there would be nuclear warfare on the field!

I would actually argue that a water game is the most likely of the suggestions so far, simply because there are multiple competition models to build off of. (MATE, NURC, etc).

I would like to see a mostly autonomous game, or one where your controls are limited to only pre-programmed sequences (like hybrid mode last year)

Robots On Ice!!!

We are actually designing a robot that will work on ice and shoot hockey pucks for demonstrations at a local professional hockey team. We want to bring it out during intermission.

Thoughts are blades instead of wheels configured like omni wheel omni bots (four motors on four corners at 45 degrees). Than pick up the pucks and shoot them at the nets.

I'm going to go with Wayne-- I don't think FRC has had one of those in years! (If it hasn't been multipliers, it's been ref judgment calls or seemingly minor rules that have a huge effect.)

As for outside-the-box, I'll go with "house" robots that only get in the way, or that you have to score on. Preferably the latter, as the former has already been done.

I like the cooperative type of game, especially with the new networking capabilities of this years control system. Imagine if the robots had to communicate information to the other robots on their team concerning track conditions or something of that nature. Even better if they had to discover who was on their team and act without the other alliance discovering them (that might be tough to do :yikes: )

samir13k 09-11-2008 18:36

Re: No Way That's Gonna Happen!

What if they had teams had a round where teams would swap robots and use the other teams robots! It's definitely not unrealistic, but the other team might be mad if you damaged their robot!

Been there, done that, though only about 7 - 12 teams are still around. 1992, FRC's game Maize Craze. I remember looking through the rules once, can't remember where. Might have been at the TechnoKats History Project site. The floor? Corn.

Soup Game!

A robot collects meat veggies and broth and makes it hot, then serves it to the refs, scoring could be based half on how good the soup is, and half on how well you picked up the ingredients

Actually my team had discussed this at our last meeting! If we hover then we can just have our robot lower to the ground whenever we need to black an object!

Also, air tubes (i dont know the technical term, The tubes full of air at the bottom of the robot that floats inches above the ground) could act as our bumpers!

Never gonna happen, for sure.

Never gonna happen, Dave Lavery banned from the internet from April until January (sorry Dave, the red herrings have to stop) and also, no more mention of a water game for illogical reasons. Ie, "I noticed that Dean was wearing blue socks at Championship this year, also Woodie had two blue sharpies with him, this is evidence for a WATER GAME!!!!!!!" A Jello game on the other hand...

Yay, that way i can't electricrute myself...(I did it twice at Cage Match). Actually I could but i dont think it would hurt as mutch with all the power coming from a lemon.

But does that also mean that lemons are illegal since electricity is not?

Yes but if we split it among FRC teams its 26,000 per teams (1501 according the FIRST) Now, some teams have budgets higher than that, others look at that number and wonder how they would ever need that much money.

Somebody needs to talk them into this.

There is only 1501 teams last season.
that leaves each team approximately $26,650!:D

Oops...Didnt see your post andrew, but we had the same figures. In that case I confirmed your math.

Another thing that will never happen, FIRST abandoning its unrealistic goal of FRC in every high school. Logic should tell them they dont need FRC in every school, a more realistic goal would be to have FRC available to every high school student.

Instead of one robot, each team must build 5. the game requires 12 robots per alliance, so the teams could chose one robot from each team to sit out, or three from one team, or two from one team and one from another. It would be neat to see autonomous throughout the game. There could be pressure pads a la Triple Play, only reversed. When the HP is on the pressure pad, a teleoperated control is turned off and any scoring done by the robot is counted triple-score.

in the bus that morning or in the hotel room at 4 in the morning.
After several years of forgetting to make a BOM, we made sure that we had a nice, neat, correct Bill of Materials typed up in advance, printed out several copies and saved it onto a laptop and a flash drive....and then somehow neglected to bring any of these to competition. We ended up with something we wrote on notebook paper at three in the morning, anyway.

Hopefully, this year, we will be one less team with an illegible BOM handed in on a peice of notebook paper.

im thinkin that this year is probably not water. maybe soon though. i would have to guess something that will require something of this new control system. so possible multiple autonomous periods. one at the start and one at the end. maybe obstacles that require articulation and maybe a phase in the game where you are required to lose visual of your robot and allow the control system to take over temporarily

Burmeister #279 29-11-2008 16:52

Re: No Way That's Gonna Happen!

If you are thinking of making time adjustments you have to remember that the number of teams is growing exponentially each year and you can't have regionals running for 5-6 days. Most likely, the time will stay the same, but instead, another team will be added to the alliances.

Also, as far as multiple autonomous periods are concerned, I don't think it'll be possible {^} instead, i think more teams will use buttons to set off programmed series of movements or automatic movements based off sensors. [we'll definately try] because

As far as the game's concerned, multiple game piece shape/sizes [as in not just changing scale] seems possible and an interesting idea because a universal arm/hand would probably not work

Also it would we cool if all the refs were dressed as ninjas...

I like the fully autonomous robot idea! We joked about that for a while this year because if the lap running autonomous for Overdrive worked well enough -with collision detection included- then we could just turn in on and let it run the whole match and maybe make the turns better than a human driver... (it didn't work that well... it started having temper tantrums!) But that would be really cool to more automated commands for the robots! Maybe zones where you can not have any human control, and it has to go through on sensors and programming alone!

Sorry, the jello game is reserved for FLL. Lime jello, specifically.

I thought Dave said that they rejected his jello game :p

Just because Dave says something does not mean he is telling us everything, they could have vetoed the lime jello game but not the strawberry jello game.

Dave never tells us everything ... especially around hint time.

Sounds like Botball, somewhat. ;)

Cheerleaders...

No really though, a robot game with rules similar to Risk. This would combine FIRST, Battlebots, and US Government...

yeah I agree. but i think that it will be more like you have to pass the ball or whatever from teammate to teammate. so you really need to work with them, or your whole alience suffers, that or i think that it would be cool to have a multi leveled playing field, like each robot is responsible for getting it up to the next level for the next robot to score.

Multi Leveled might be hard, but just having sections with walls and having to pass the scoring object would definitely be possible and fun. Have the alliances going in opposing directions, and you could still play defense.

After seeing this years hint, I have something that I can now say will never, ever, not until the end of time, happen: We will never see a game hint that allows us to guess at what the game will be, nor one that fails to cause a ridiculous amount of speculation.

What I would like to see happen is a game when they switch on auto mode at random points during the game.

i want to have each division at nationals gather their robots and battle to determine what division really is best.

What if the game field was like a giant air hockey table that made the game pieces move at random?
Then at random times during the match, the lights on the field will turn off an on again! :D Sounds like fun!

A three-sectioned field with one robot from each alliance in the box, and you need to get game pieces from one side of the field to the other with the help of your teammates, or by flinging it all the way over?

They could do it so you can throw the pieces over, but the robot on the recieving end still has to pick it up and put it on a pylon or something to score. Think any one of FIRST's crazy stacking games.

Then you get three kinds of robots I can think of: Defenders (low to the ground, lots of torque, just there to mess your day up and push you around), Throwers (the name says it all) and, lets call them "Arms" (Arm-equipped robots that can pick up, pass, and stack the game pieces for scoring.

There, you retain the element that defense is important (assuming we're on carpet again, where you can actually push people around easily), but you can't exactly win if all you do is defend.

I kind of like that idea, actually. Teamwork isn't required but you'll get leaps and bounds farther.

Oh, but in the interest of fairness, let people choose which section to put their team's robot in. That way you don't get a defender on the end where it can't help you score at all. That'd be no bueno.

I think I'd like to see a more battlebot type of game. FOR ONCE. just a cannon or something. no no wait howabout. a game to burn holes with lasers and it's based around tic tac toe?

this game is going to be insanley like battlebots because of the lack of control teams will (likely) have

Something with modular robotics (think nanorobots, if nanorobots weren't so nano) would be amazing, and challenging, but the problem is that the parts they give us are just too large to make a working modular system.
