LOOK! Great deals on tooling for FRC teams.

No joke I found this website while looking for a roughing end mill set. They're not as comprehensive as McMaster-Carr, but they have a lot of tools at extremely low prices! I am advising you as a fellow FIRST member to take advantage of this website! http://www.wttool.com

Do you normally buy tooling from McMaster?

I would highly recommend against buying tooling from them-they're a total ripoff, unless it's the "I need this by 9 am tomorrow morning" kind of deal.

Mcmaster sells just about anything and everything technical, and if they don't, they'll get it for you; it's really convenient, but also really expensive. Mcmaster charges you a premium for this convenience. Compare products on Mcmaster to other places, and you'll see Mcmaster is usually substantially more expensive.

You can easily find any cutting tools that McMaster sells for 10-25% less from other places.

Same thing for metal. It's even more pronounced when you purchase metal from McMaster. Often times metal we buy is 40-50% less from a local supplier than it is from McMaster-and it's delivered for free the next morning.

As Adam said, you're paying for the convenience of knowing McMaster can and will get you anything you need within 24-48 hours.

Hand tools aren't THAT much more expensive though... The other items, however, are considerably more. Just wanted to clarify tools vs tooling for those not paying attention.

We have to buy through McMaster Carr because our VP gets a discount through them, but what other sites offer good deals on shipping and tooling.

Wow, thanks for the replies. I'm not a mechanical-person, but was wondering just to pass along to the rest of the team.

If your going for cheap check this place out,

http://www.cdcotools.com/index.php

They sell all the same China junk that Enco and Grizzly sell (wttool as well). Fast as well, I got my stuff in less then 2 days.

If its important, get it from Mcmaster or MSC.

Lol, go look at the backlash on that micro mill in your shop. :P

Na, its fine for what we are doing. That other mini knee mill you people have is quite nice.

I just like my 1964 Bridgeport (yours teams one is nice to). :D

Also http://www.shars.com/ looks pretty neat as well.

I prefer KBC, because it's local, we get special pricing, and free shipping on everything (generally 1 day delivery)

They do have low prices, but from my experience don't bother showing up at the store if you are local to them. At least at the Tampa location they rarely had any of the things I needed on hand and I almost always had to wait several days for them to order whatever I required.

Fyi I would normally buy taps, reamers, bits, end mills, and one very well traveled 1/2" hex broach.

I'm almost certain Home Depot and Lowes will not carry tooling for mills, lathes, etc...

gorrilla 14-11-2008 21:24

Re: LOOK! Great deals on tooling for FRC teams.

actually lowes has small lathes..... but for big stuff i would use someone else. but they are good for small stuff, like if we need 2,000 rivets in a single box or something.
