Ignoring Game Hints

Anyone else spend this time of year pretending that Dave Lavery, the GDC, and all game hints simply do NOT exist?

-John

PS - I can tell you that Opah is much more satisfying to eat than to obsess over. ;)

All I knew was that it was "some type of Hawaiian fish" because on of our students told me. Since you know what type of fish, you've obviously spent too much time already.

Only because I ate some in Hawaii last week and someone told me "hey you're eating the game hint!"

I smell a new "the game" game brewing. Every time you think about the game hint you lose the game.

I obsessed over the game hint the 2 seasons that I was in high school for FIRST. Now that I am in college it just doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

I admit it, I'm a party to this boondoggle.
I was forced to contribute to the vast waste of man-hours when I forwarded the link to my team. I may have had the clue up on my screen, but I didn't look for inner meaning, I swear. :p

I occasionally check the thread to see if there are any real interesting new ideas...not following too closely though...

Re: Ignoring Game Hints

John, this year I've joined the ranks of the grumpy old mentors who have seen too many of these game hints to get excited by them anymore. I think its easier this year to ignore them with the new control system to play with.

But its always good to see the younglings get excited about the game hints every year, but wake me up when someone actually figures out something useful... January will come soon enough, hopefully this will be the first year I don't loose any sleep before build season starts... I know I'll be loosing enough sleep once season starts trying to pull a rookie team through build season...

Re: Ignoring Game Hints

I haven't bothered thinking much about the hints since we were all "obsessed with a shovel's show....."

Where are the poems? The creativity? The meaty game hints that people have a water game's chance in Hades of interpreting?

Anyone can post a picture of a smelly dead fish online.....;)

Ah, but there's always new fish, erm, freshman each year. Many of them have the opportunity to experience the fun now that you did a few short years ago, thanks to the GDC.

I don't pretend they don't exist, I prefer to read the game hint threads and laugh at the chaos there.

Yep... I didn't even know there was a game hint until like 3 days after it came out when someone told me.

I took part in guessing and speculating until the thread started to loop with the massive influx of rookies guessing without actually reading the thread. Now I'll just wait until the game gets here. Plenty of other stuff to worry about, like finals...

You... make... me... sick. :P Just kidding. I've learned to ignore it now.

On-topic, I can't keep away from the hints thread, even if I don't have a theory.

The pictures just don't inspire as much curiosity in me as the poems. The IR board might just qualify as The Best Hint Ever, though.

Re: Ignoring Game Hints

What we all have to realize (and fortunately, most of we mentors do) is that the game isn't for US, but for the students. The clues are part of the game. So it doesn't matter if we're getting bent out of shape over a JPG of a fish (I do hope not too many of us are), but we should let the kids do so. It won't hurt anyone, unless we're talking about losing sleep, it will only increase the anticipation for kick-off (as if that were needed, or even possible).

In any event, I don't think anyone will ever solve the any aspect of the game based on a clue (but if you do, CALL ME QUICK!)

Same here.. I was literally every day discussing new things, bouncing ideas off annoyed teammates, trying to unravel it. Last year was particularly bad. I'm still moderately interested (and I think there have been a few good ideas suggested in the thread), but for the most part I'm just sitting back waiting for that fateful Saturday morning.

Last year the GPS coordinates were figured out, and it's a distinct possibility that this year's has been figured out too; there's just such an abundance of speculation going on that it's impossible to know exactly what is right or not. A post of "hey those coordinates are for the Boston marathon, maybe it's a race game?" is quickly lost in a sea of other equally viable possibilities.

skimoose 08-12-2008 19:49

Re: Ignoring Game Hints

It's still fun to see Dave's mind at work, or is that play? Also, occasionally stirring the pot is always fun.

I'll have to agree with Billfred that the poems were fun, I liked it better when the clues pointed to the game's name.

As someone who usually volunteers for field setup, I was relieved that it wasn't a picture of a blowfish or puffer fish. My hearing could use a break from inflating field objects! :p

if you turn the brightness down on the picture you can read the lettering in the background. The picture is out of some school text book it realy doesn't say much.

Since I still haven't figured out the link between last years hints and the actual game, i am not yet concerning myself with this years hint.

Has one been posted? I thought the first one came out January 4th.

Wait. What am I supposed to be ignoring again?

I've been drowning getting a new control system running on an old robot and my brain is a little water logged these days. It's hard being a salmon swimming upstream, so if one of you could throw me a line and hook me up I promise to catch back up with the school...

Ignoring the game hint? What a great idea! If nothing more than for self preservation! When I left Friday evening, the Game Hint Thread was at 120 posts which was outrageous on its own, now it is close to 650!

But its hard to do when you walk through the high school and see the Opah as the wallpaper photo on all of the tech computers! (And when your very dear friend sends you poems about meatballs and moonfish! )

I just looked at the picture showed it to the people in the cube farm near me to see their reations and forwarded the e-mail. Too busy with work to bother much thought into it.

Best year ever was when I didn't get the clue until after New Years.Although the clue did make me remember to check in here at CD for the first time in 3 months so I guess it can't be all that bad.

Song - meant to be sung ...
singular.

One. Just one.

And speaking of song - I can not believe that no one has started singing:

By the ligggghhhhhht

Of the silvery mooooooon...

You can tap dance to that, too.
