This is the most often asked question, and finnaly I have a simple answer for everyone. the Pinnacle Video Transfer, its a $99 ($95 on amazon, I've seen it for $70 on ebay) device that records a component video and audio input right to an external hard drive at the push of a button in glorious h.264.

Have you used this before? I just did a real quick research on it and there appears to be some quality concerns. Reviewers have said the quality is good for ipods, but anything larger and the quality isn't too great. But if you have used it, then I'm sure its good enough for our purposes.

After looking at the bitrates on this website ( http://www.trustedreviews.com/multim...eo-Transfer/p1 ) I just can't seem to imagine that it would produce any type of HQ video. To produce SDTV quality MPEG-4 video, you should have at least 3 to 4 Mpbs, and this device max out at 1.5 Mbps.

A cheap DVR or CD recorder would probably be your best bet to record the matches.

Is there any distinction we can make with the people that are streaming the matches. and the people who will be archiving the matches. Or both.

I am just trying to figure out how we can watch week 1 regionals while they are going on.

Thanks

I have one ot the Pinnacle Video Transfer devices, just bought it last week actually. I hooked it up to my Satelite and recorded for a couple hours onto a 8gm Ipod nano with no issues I havent hooked up to a USB flash drive but I doubt it would be any different.

I will also be recording at the same time via DVD recorder as a more tried and true process.

I'm not sure I agree with that... according to the device information, it is recording using H.264 (which is technically MPEG4 Part 10, however when most people say MPEG4 they're usually referring to MPEG4 Part 2). While H.264 encoder implementations can vary dramatically regarding the quality of video produced at given bitrates, 1.5Mbps should be very good quality for SD. As an example, Netflix streaming movies are encoded at a maximum of 1.5Mbps (using VC1 which offers similar performance). Their HD movies max out at 3.8Mbps. I've watched Netflix videos at both of these bitrates and they look excellent - more than good enough for our needs.

I used it last year to record the LA regional. I tried it both on the highest setting (which is interlaced, and needs to be deinterlaced in postprocessing). See http://video.soap108.com/2008/ca-losangeles/ca_037.mp4. The next day I did it on the medium setting, which I think ended up looking better. See http://video.soap108.com/2008/ca-los...s/ca_qf1m2.mp4. You can download all the videos here: http://video.soap108.com/2008/ca-losangeles/

I recorded to an external hard drive, because big flash drives were still expensive last year. If I was doing it again, I'd buy an 8 gig flash drive, probably.

I was very happy with the quality compared to how a lot of the regional's videos came out.

Hi,

I was wondering if a consensus was reached on the video format/method? [The DC Regional is coming up:rolleyes: ]

Thanks,

I am starting to document this here: http://www.firstwiki.net/index.php/2009_Archiving.

That wiki page now contains most of the knowledge contained in this thread.

Can anyone with 'insider information' confirm this? I emailed both the Midwest and Wiscosin regionals to confirm that we could record the video (for scouting purposes) and both times they were unsure. The Wisconsin regional planning committee said it was 'very unlikely'. The new scoring system seems to have changed some of the standards.

They do have a profesional compony produce the feed, I do not think they record it though.

As I under stand the company will just get a feed out from the scoring table with the live scoring at the bottom of a green screen and a second with the final scores. The company adds live video from their cameras. They probably will also have a First logo screen and a screen for alliance selection.
