New Rio Issues, refuses team number and programming

Hey CD,
Phil here from 1274
We're having some issues with our Rio. We have our system set up yet the OI is refusing to accept our team number and refuses to be programmed. We have no clue what the issue is. We've been following the manual as closely as we can tell. We suspect the firmware update was not done or not done correctly. Could this be the source of our problems.
Thanks,
Team 1274

1. search before you post
2. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...threadid=70807
3. you are suppose to update the firmware yourself
4. read the manual carefully

Thanks for the info,
I did a search but nothing matched... keywords probably didn't match.

The first thing to determine is what you're actually talking about. The CompactRIO ("cRIO") is the big thing with plug-in modules that mounts on the robot. There's no such thing as an "OI" this year -- the name for the blue box the joysticks plug into this year is Driver Station ("DS").

What is refusing to accept a team number? How are you telling it the number, and what does it do when you try? What exactly do you mean by "refuses to be programmed"?

What does the error message say when trying to program?

I have the same problem. For some reason it is getting the wrong IP address from the cRIO. I have the cRIO powered up and connected to the computer. When I open up FRC cRIO Imaging Tool it finds the cRIO but the Mac address and the current IP is not the same shown in the diagram in section 5.1.2.4. When I click the apply button it says some error of the subnet ip address is wrong.

The MAC address (Media Access Control) is the actual physical address hard coded into the networking hardware. Every device that uses TCP/IP has a unique MAC address. According to the manual, there is a label on the bottom of the cRIO that has the MAC for your system. The one in the manual is for reference only and is not what you should be seeing.

Can you give us the exact wording of the error it is displaying?

If you have never set the IP address of the controller before, it is automatically set with a team number of 0. So the IP address should default to 10.0.0.2.

Because of this you need to make sure your computer has a static IP address of 10.0.0.6 and a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0. If you don't have your computers IP set correctly it won't be able to re-Image the cRIO.

If you follow the directions on page 5 of the Control System Configuration manual (http://www.usfirst.org/uploadedFiles...ation-0-5c.pdf) for updating cRIO firmware, it should work.

Do I assign the IP address and subnet mask like this?

http://img514.imageshack.us/my.php?image=crionj1.jpg

Also, are you sure the subnet mask is 255.0.0.0? Because in the labview tutorial video FIRST Robotics Competition: Joystick Motor Control in 10 Minutes the guy enters the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
(link to the tutorial video http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/7977 )

The video tutorials show the minimal configuration and do not get into all the details needed for successful operation, especially on the field. You need to follow the manuals for configuration information.

Yes that is how you set it, although I would leave the DNS on automatic. Make sure you are setting the IP on the correct network adapter, ie make sure you set it IP for the wired network card on the computer, if the computer has WIFI.

I got the 255.0.0.0 from the manual, and it worked for our team. I can't say that 255.255.255.0 wouldn't work as I have not tried it, but we went by the configuration manual and it worked.

Another thing that I've seen mentioned on the FIRST forums if you are using a computer with more than one network connection, is to disable the all of the network cards except the wired one that is connected to the cRIO. Because during the upgrade process the IP is sometimes set to 0.0.0.0 and this can mess things up if you are connected to other networks at the same time.

I'm not sure why but I'm not able to set DNS to automatic. If you look at the image again you can see that I can't. I will try what you have suggested and change the subnet mask to 255.0.0.0 instead of 255.255.255.0 and check if that solves problem.
I appreciate your help.

Re: New Rio Issues, refuses team number and programming

I have only set a static IP on a windows XP and under that you can have a static IP and an automatic DNS address at the same time. I just looked at the static IP settings under Vista and it appears that you can't do that any more. I assume that you are using Vista. That said, as far as I know the DNS settings shouldn't matter, and it should work under Vista.

I hope you get this working.

Re: New Rio Issues, refuses team number and programming

Another important tip is to disable firewalls on the computer connecting to the cRIO (or DS).

Yet another tip is to try a different computer. We had trouble connecting with the cRIO on Saturday. We did a lot of thing, but one of the last things was to switch to another computer and a lot of problems went away. Could be coincidence, but it is always worth a try.

If you use school computers you might have the proxy still on. You have to turn it off when doing most of the configuration. To do that you go to Internet options-connections-LAN settings.
