Your post is well thought out and it was reasoned well before you asked the CD community. You brought everything here that you wanted clarified and answered. It is also very cool that you involved your community by using the city initials and that you listened to the parents' concerns. By doing that, it shows respect for everyone, including FIRST. It also shows the team's ability to look at all the different angles/sides and to be able to ask for guidance and opinion. These are signs of maturity and big picture thinking. Very nice. Good luck with your rookie year! Jane |

As stated above, there's no copyright issues involved; in fact, there have been times when our team ("The Cardinals", our school's teams' name) was paired up with other cardinals. It happens, so don't worry about it. Regarding Team 1024, their name comes from the fact that the computer term for 1024 bytes is a kilobyte. But I think the honoring of your hometown's name is neat. (If you think "Kill-A" is an issue, consider "Kila" or "Kilo".) And lastly, "Crazy enough to work" is a great motto, IMHO! Good luck with Build Season, and hopefully we'll see you in Atlanta! |

Re: Team-name rules(?)
first off welcome to the community. and what our team did was look around at other teams and try to get ideas of what they have come up with. so we are now Las Pumas. because our school mascot is a cougar and puma is the same thing. so we are the cougars. good luck with the name

Re: Team-name rules(?)
And pluse thers no rules yet the manual isnt out yet

Re: Team-name rules(?)
typharn: Generally, there aren't any rules against names in the manual. 1, that would be pushing the limits as to what is and isn't controlled by FIRST. Unless there were an influx of really offensive names (which I don't think has happened), they won't do anything like that. 2, if they did decide to do that, they'd probably want to enforce it before the deadline for the TIMS entries.

(Yes, the bearcat mascot will make an appearance this season, again) Mr. Ed is right, though. It's pointless to go crazy over the team name in that way. Every year our team spends at least a week during design period, thinking up names. Some are crazy, some are pretty good. Not everyone can agree on them, though, so ultimately we choose a simple name or the same name as last year. Most teams are satisfied with their name and leave it for ten years. We apparently want to reinvent the wheel each season. But I digress. If all of your students and mentors think it's an appropriate name to represent your team, go ahead and use it! Try to politely talk the non-supporters into seeing what you see in the name. But in the end, it's up to your team to make the decision. |
Re: Team-name rules(?)
Thank you all! you really helped me^^.
I have another question: in some e-mail that was sent to us, they asked us for our "robot's name" and somewhere it also said "team nickname" that is "what teams refer to themselves as". What are those? What is their role in the competition? Are there any? I hope you'll be able to answer and give me examples, if there are any... thanks :] |

Team Nickname: Instead of team name xyzsponsor/ACME MFG/whoknows & yourhighschool, most (if not all) teams use a nickname. Yours would be "Kill-O-Bytes". Your team name is your official sponsors and your school(s), while your nickname is up to you. It's your identity, if you will. The other teams and the announcers will call you by this name 99% of the time. |
Re: Team-name rules(?)
I like it and don't see any problem with it. Good ahead with it!
