Robots design?
Do you guys think the robots this year will be similar to 2006 Aim High?
|
Re: Robots design?
i could see it just because of the task we have.
|
Re: Robots design?
I'm not sure, I could see alot of teams designing robots like Aim High, but my team seems to think that it would be almost impossible to shoot the rocks a good distance, let alone accurately into a moving target.

Re: Robots design?
Yeah, but most likely people wouldn’t shoot the balls very far though. And I think the methods of picking up the balls off the floor would be similar.
|
Re: Robots design?
If we can throw the balls across our shop pretty far and accurately, I think there's teams out there that can build shooters that do the same.
Also, yeah, I can imagine this being similar to Aim High, and we've definitely considered redesigning our '06 bot. |
Re: Robots design?
What about 2002?
The goals are similar in design to them. |

I'm thinking more of a basket that dumps the balls, kind of like the robot in the animation. |
Re: Robots design?
I would go with conveyers to pick up the balls, and a basket dump at the top.
Also, some kind of rollers or claw to "latch" onto opponent goals can help (not sure if it's legal). |

Re: Robots design?
i do think this game is alot similar to aim high. if there is a team that can design some sort or auto target thing for the tele-op period they are going to be a tough team.

Re: Robots design?
Our team has actually been looking at designs from the aim high book, and modeling ideas around them.

It is highly possible, the cameras FIRST gave us are pretty powerful... I was thinking maybe just shooting them right off the bat at one of the other bots and hope they go in ;) |
Re: Robots design?
I can't think of a way to shoot the balls. The most effective way to shoot in Aim High was feeding a ball through 2 pairs of spinning wheels but with these orbit balls I see a number of problems. It would be difficult to apply pressure, as they deform (and break) easily. Furthermore they do not have a uniform surface, to shots will be inconsistent. And, the fabric covering will decrease traction (especially compared to the rubbery foam in the nerf balls). I really can't imagine an effective shooter based on a softball pitcher model. The best I can think of is a catapult style shooter that I remember one team had in 2006.

Re: Robots design?
Thinking outside of the box for this one wasn't a problem for us.
Building outside of it, well, that should be interesting... |

Re: Robots design?
We predict to see many resurrections of 06 bots + 02 bots. And a little hint of 05 thrown in there.

a: get the balls b: dump them off to the HP c: let the HP do his/her job and shoot em in seems similar to 04 doesn't it? (06 was pretty much the same thing, i could see a catapult system or a softball pitcher type shooter coming into play). What people don't realize is this, in 06 you were shooting at a still target, some teams could move in any direction and still score because of their cams and programming, but this year, thats a whole lot harder, because these targets are moving as well, that doesn't sound as hard as it is, but think about it this way it takes a ball say .5 seconds to get ot the goal. because the goal is not fixed, the goal can move an ANY direction between that period, you will need to shoot and program accordingly... THIS is where luck comes into play, (well, maybe not luck, but more of a mental game.) |
Re: Robots design?
We're not going to be able the reuse our flywheel design from the Aim High bot. That thing would rip these balls to shreds, and I can't imagine how hard it would be to turn on this floor once the flywheel was up to speed.

Re: Robots design?
I see a lot of different parts of old designs, especially 2006 (i've only been here since 05) coming together to be a formidable bot.
