Chat Room

Hi, so after a bit of google searching, and forum searching, I seam to have discovered that none of the old chatrooms are used anymore. Is this the case or did I not dig deep enough? And also, is anyone interested in using a chat room again?

Going along with the chat room idea.. I read some ware on here about Teamspeak, I think that would be a VERY good idea.. We can have some discussions about things. It would be nice.

Teamspeak would be interesting, so long as not too many people were in. I like the idea of IRC or something because it allows a faster response than a forum, but not requiring headsets/mics, etc. Plus I can see/respond while I'm at work and I don't think my boss would like it much if I used TS at work. But maybe having a TS server for smaller chats? so and IRC chat for the general topics, but if someone needed some more help a small group could join a TS channel to chat about it when needed?

I think a chatroom would be a good idea, seeing as how opinions are what i seek in trying to help my team with design... I happen to be a worrier in my team.

Re: Chat Room

i like the idea of it the only problem i see with it is the moderation of it and kicking out of people who are being inappropriate.

Things to think of
1. who would moderate
2. what are the rules
3. what is to be discussed where
4. accuracy of information given (not all experts will be on at 2-4am like some of us :D )

There is an existing IRC room on chat.freenode.net, room #firstrobotics...normally at least around 20 people there, not always active though...

Good point...who would make sure the mechanics of this chat room would go as smooth as it should?

That is an issue to address, my instinct would be to have anyone who appears to go above and beyond in the room to moderate. I'm very willing to moderate as much as I can, and I'll offer up the bandwidth and server as well, for anyone who's interested. I think to start we can use one chatroom (#FRC?) and expand from that, adding other later (#FRC-Soft, #FRC-Mech, #FRC-Elec, etc.) I'm also looking into the ability to have an IRC to teamspeak bridge for text chat, but haven't found anything yet.

Rules should be similar to the forum here, basically all boiling down to gracious professionalism. And, just like any information given here, or anywhere else, take what doesn't come from a known reliable source with a grain of salt. The server I'm running has super-ops, ops, half-ops, voices, and I think half-voices, which moderators could use to help keep track of who's a reliable source and who hasn't proven themselves yet.

Any thoughts?

Cool, I thought I'd looked there before, appearently I just missed it. So people who're interested in using chat, should we try to use this one and have the ops there currently handle things? Or do we want to migrate/start another one?

I was thinking of using the Quakenet IRC Server, it seems to be a bit more popular. I'll see if we can get rights to #FIRSTrobotics

#firstrobotics on Freenode normally isn't busy enough to split the rooms for multiple people, but it has the advantage of seasoned OPs and a varied amount of users. Which is also a good thing because the room already has a structure new members can learn instead of creating one as they go.

FalseProphet #Firstrobotics

No problem with you at all, just the way you're trying to get there. ;)
This chatroom uses something called IRC (Internet Relay Chat) to access the chatroom. You're best off using a Java client (such as the one located here) to connect to the server. Feel free to PM me if you need any other help getting there!

There's a lot of people (read: 20-30) hanging out in the room on freenode already. I don't really see a need to start a new room; it just fragments the community.
