Hours

About how many hours does your team work on a normal build season day? One of our advisersrs does not think that we need to work longer then 3:00- 5:30, except for one day a week we would stay till 8:00. Do you think that those times would be practical or not? Please respond to this.

Re: Hours

Week 1:
Saturday: 8 hours
Sunday: 6 hours
Monday: 3.5 hours
Tuesday: 5 hours
Wednesday: Off
Thursday: 6 hours
Friday: Off
Saturday: 8 hours

The rest of the season is Tues/Thurs for 5 hours and Saturday 8 hours, but that doesn't count the stuff we do at home in CAD or researching materials, etc.

We have...many ambitions...

Sat: 8am - 8 pm is open to the team. Time varies depending on need.

Sunday: Rest

Friday night get longer as the build season get shorter...

Every Week:

Monday 6:00-9:00
Tuesday 3:20-6:30
Wednesday 6:00-9:00
Thursday 3:20-6:30
Friday 6:00-9:00

Weekends: whenever we can come in
MLK & Presidents' day: All day

(some team members (leaders, really involved members) stay from 3:20-9:00 Mon, Wed, Fri, and study hall hours also(1.5 hours every other day))

Re: Hours

Hmm, our team seems to use less time. Wednesdays and Fridays 5-9pm, Saturdays 9-5pm. Of course, we always stay later than officially posted, and during the last weekend before Ship we do not have school Friday and Monday, so it's 9-? all four days. Last year I clocked in at 65 hours the whole weekend.

Early in the season, we're usually working weekdays from 3:15-6:00, and on Saturdays as needed. As the season wears on/we fall behind schedule, we usually work later on weekdays (8:00-ish) and come in on weekends. Sundays are off either way - Everybody needs some free time!

Mondays and Wednesdays:

We are meeting
Sun, Sat: 10 - 7:00pm
Mon-Fri: 12 - 8pm
It doesnt matter if there is football on weekends, holidays and/or birthdays.
We celebrate/enjoy them all in school.
I am shocked by some of the teams schedules. I heard of one team today in Hawaii that was meeting only Wed. of this week, since kickoff. :yikes:

Constructing a robot isn't the only thing some teams do. There's that webpage, updated daily. CA documentation preparations, buying of supplies, ordering materials, meals, etc. etc. etc.

For 1618:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 3:30-5:00 (unless/until we enter crunch time)
Saturday: 9:00-1:00 (with same caveat)

For 2815:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 6:00-9:00 (or we run out of work)
Saturday: Not officially defined to my knowledge, but I'm packing a lunch.

smurfgirl 06-01-2009 21:56

Re: Hours

Monday through Thursday: typically 6:30 - 9:00 (we used to stay later, but the custodial staff gets off earlier, and needs time to lock up the building)
Friday: the occasional emergency meeting, if there were snow days or we're super behind schedule
Saturday: typically 8 am - 5 pm
Sunday: typically 12 - 5

So that's about 24 hours a week.

today the majority of our team stayed until 6

Mon - 2:30-5
Tues - 2:30-5

soo 18+ hours a week

Re: Hours

We work everyday after school from 2:50 till sometime around 4:30/5:00, then saturdays from 10:00-whenever it all depends on what we can do and what needs to be done. we're all really paranoid this build season because we barely were able to ship last year and we still needed all the time at competition to fix stuff. note to everyone, don't change all the electrical stuff AND add pneumatics in week 4. it was not a well rested time in my life.

Re: Hours

For 1444:

Monday - Friday: 5:30-9:00PM
Saturday: 9:00AM-5:00PM
Sunday: 2:00-7:00PM

All the times are tentative and we usually end up staying later than we expect. We take no days off. Towards the end, we might work 18 hour days and there have been a few years with 24 hour days. Last year on the Friday before the robot was shipped, worked from 5:30PM-1:30AM and was back at 6.5 hours later. People bring food when our times interfere with meal times. This schedule works well for us. I can't imagine spending any less time.

Until the end of school, which is 3pm (or 2 on thursdays) until as early as 6 or as late as 9... We actually have parents bringing in food on the days we stay really late.

Also, some students have several free periods during the day, where they work on the bot.

Saturday and Sunday are open as long as people need to be there... which is usually most of the day.

We do
Mon 3-7 then a team meeting then after that till 8-8:30 ish
Tues-Fri 3-8
Sat 10am-anywhere from 6-9
Sun noon- 8

During the final week we tend to work longer hours and the hours I posted are a rough estimate it really depends on how much we get done on the day...

Re: Hours

We voted an an official 11 hour a week schedule for this year, where traditionally we've operated on an official 15 hour a week schedule. However, I came late yesterday and still put in 4 hours. We do whatever it takes. Saturdays start as a 7:59-3:00pmish during week 1, and by week 6 Saturday's meetings start at 7:59 and last until midnightish... :ahh:

Mechanical, as far as your individual situation, it depends. If you're willing to settle for a box on wheels, you can get away with your current time schedule, and quite possibly less. If you want a six wheeled swerve drive capable of translating and rotating at the same time will launching moon rocks into a goal thirty feet away, then you'll never realistically finish. It's all about setting realistic goals. Just my 2 cents, you'll need more time. If you meet more now, and discover later you can meet less, great! But if you meet less now, you may find yourself wishing you had more time during week 6, which is never a good position to be in. This game will depend a lot on driver skill, so the sooner you finish, the better.

In past years, we've done a tues/thurs 7-9 and sat 9-4 schedule, but by week 3 or 4 that's usually stretched out to include a few more days. Saturday: 10:00 A.M. - 6:00 P.M.
Sunday: 1:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M.

we have only had two meetings, and from what i know we still do not have any definitive designs and we are still deciding what we want our bot to do. as usual, i'm guessing we will have like 5 kids go all-nighters the last week.

Saturday: 9am-8pm
Sunday: off

i have yet to bring about my concerns, but will hopefully get our captain to add more time weekly.

Team 811 works around the mentors' hours:

Sunday 1:00pm - 6:00pm, Monday-Thursday 6:00pm - 10:00pm, Saturday 9:00am-6:00pm. (Friday is called "date night")

It is assumed that students do homework etc. from 2:00pm-6:00pm, as opposed to after 10:00pm. Furthermore, we have semester finals during the third week, and students are barred from attendance from Monday afternoon (MLK day) until Friday afternoon. The students are repeatedly told that if they don't do well on the semester finals they might be banned (by parents or school) thereafter, so this isn't usually a point of contention.

In either case, only the most insane students (I won't mention names) work all those hours.

This year we're planning on:

First part of the season:
Monday: No meetings until Math Team ends because a lot of our team is also on the Math Team. Once that's over, same hours as Tuesday-Thursday.
Tuesday-Thursday: 3-6ish
Friday: Nonmentored optional fun day (Orbit ball basketball and pizza party, anyone?)
Saturday: 8-4ish

Later in the season:
Monday-Thursday: 3 until somewhere between 6 and 9
Friday: Emergency meetings when we suddenly realize how little time is left
Saturday: 8 until somewhere between 4 and 9
Sunday: Emergency meetings when we suddenly realize how little time is left

Obviously if it's crunch time, we extend the hours a bit.

To all the teams that have meetings right after school, you seem to be limiting yourself as far as members go. How are people who practice sports expected to show up. I know if my team went from 2:30-5:30, I wouldn't be able to show up as i have track practice from 2:45-4:30ish. Just something I found weird.

Regular build season:
Monday through Friday: 2:45 - [4:15,4:45]
Days off of school: 10 - [4,6], varies depending on our coach's schedule

During ship week:
Varies based on what we need to get done. One day last year was 2:45 - 10:00, or so.

We usually have a small crew there every day: 2-3 mechanical, 2 programming, 3 controls/electrical; it suffices, and it allows different schedules to work.

Two of us:
M-F -> 10am until 2 or 3pm (during school)
The rest:
M-F -> 10-11:30

I was surprised at how often everyone else is in. We don't have after school meetings, mostly because our team consists mostly of me(programming/electrical/pneumatic/team leader) and one builder/mechanical.
We do it all. The rest of the people don't care and therefore get odd jobs.

If something needs doing I take it home. The KOP went straight from Kickoff to my room this year:).

I spend about 30-35 hours on FIRST related projects a week.

Re: Hours

Hmmm... well. Our weekly hours are scheduled to look like this:

Monday- 6-9
Tuesday- 4:30-9
Wednesday- 6-9
Thursday- 4:30-9
Friday- (By Invitation Only)
Saturday- 10-5
Sunday- 1-6

Everybody doesn't show up every night, but instead have schedules with assigned subgroups for different nights. That might change based on necessity, but the structure still helps keep members organized and focused pretty well.

As expected, that usually breaks down come ship time, as expected. Last year we crated at a pleasantly early midnight, but it's gone far later in years prior.

I feel your pain. In 2006 we had maybe three or four people consistently working on the robot. In 2007 that grew by like, three. I'm pretty sure we didn't have mentors very often if at all in '07. '08 and '09 though, we've got a lot of people (this year especially) and mentors that can be here almost every day... and it's a world of difference. The workload per person is lighter (which is nice) and we can be more precise, even.

Doesn't mean we're any better, honestly (our best season so far wasn't our most precise. In fact, the season before (which was, until 2007, our best season so far) was horrible... hardly nothing matched perfectly, about half the bot was built in the pit with a jigsaw and some other hand tools, etc). Just means it's easier.

We don't really have set times. We work every day, usually for 6-8+ hours.

I've put in 4 12+ hour days already since saturday.

No wonder the poofs rock, they must never sleep!

We do M-Th 4:30 to 7:30 and Saturday 8am to 2pm. Students are required to attend all of the 1st week, and the 2 days + Saturday after Week 1. These are the base hours and of course enough time to get it done will be spent.

For the first few weeks, our schedule is generally 2:30-5 Monday-Wednesday, 2:30-9 Friday, 8am-3pm Saturday. This generally changes after week 4, to allow more build time.

Re: Hours

tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday:
3PM-8PM
and we do stuff at home.
I think it's not enough, although I already lost track of my life.
I guess that as the shipment day will get closer - we will spend a lot more hours in school.
As rookies we'll find out if that is a good strategy... in the end ><.
Now we mainly focus on translating the manuel to Hebrew - the final version will sound horrible... we already said we are doing crimes against the English language ><.

Re: Hours

We normally don't get to our shop till 4:30, and then stay till 8.

We go full blast the first week, everyday, including saturdays from 8-4/5.

Then we slow down and meet three days a week, and then saturdays.
And then we realize that we're behind scheduale and go full blast again around week 3 1/2

Depends on your goals.
This year, 1712 Meets
Mon - 2:40-9
Tues - 2:40-9
Sat - Varies (5-7 hours)
-Roughly 18-20 hours/week ...
plus we squeeze in more hours "virtually" working on award entries and mentors spend "off days" researching for coding, rules, etc.

We don't meet as much as many others do, more than some. Bottom line is you always need to work at maximizing the time you have and keep your goals realistically matched if you don't want to get overwhelmed at the end.

Re: Hours

M-F: 5-8
Sat: 9-5

That's pretty much the build schedule this year, although, we have worked on the Saturday & Sundays of the last 2 weeks in previous years, but can't due to Asbestos cleaning on Sunday's at the HS this year & we have worked from 4-8 other years on the weekdays.

All of this is at the High School we are based out of btw.
No outside sponsor locations.

This year, we are VERY GLAD we finished the robot as much as we have so far*, because we can not get into our school at all from Sat. Feb 14th to beyond ship date due to spring vacation.

The robot will be shipped by a sponsor more-than-likely again, but it will probably be done on the Monday (16th) before ship date (17th) anyways if we attend the pre-ship scrimmage in the state.

*About 98% as of today I would guesstimate - so much so we took it all apart & are painting it, powder coating it, & anodizing it this year for the first time ever!

Re: Hours

Bedford Express meets 6 days a week.

Monday-Thursday 6 P.M. - 9 P.M.
Friday Day Off
Saturday 1 P.M. - 8 P.M.
Sunday 1 P.M. - 5 P.M.

Which gives a total of 23 hours a week.

Through week 5 we have been able to keep to the schedule with only 1 Friday meeting. Our mentors are amazing because they usually come straight from a full day of work to our 3 hour meeting. We are meeting more this year than in years prior but it is paying off because we are finishing the robot earlier.

Re: Hours

Both 1155 and 2265 meet from the time school ends (4 PM) to 8-9 PM on Weekdays. On the weekends we meet from 9 AM to 4 PM. On weekdays that we don't have school (and if there are no midterms/regents on those days) we meet from 10 AM to 8 PM.

M: 6-9
T: 6-9
W:6-9
Th: 7-8:30-ish (team meeting; no regular work session)
F: 6-9
Sat: 12-9, with a dinner break around 5
Sun: 1-4

Last year was pretty much the same thing, though we started putting in more hours on Saturdays as we got closer to ship. I definitely remember working 9 to 9 on a few Saturdays (Eating breakfast, lunch, AND dinner with the team...how can it get better than that?). The only things stopping us from working 3:30-whoknowswhen on weekdays are mentor availability, homework, and the school kicking us out at 9. Starting on the Saturday before ship up until that sad time when we have to crate the robot (oh, sorry, we're ziplock bagging our bots this year. My bad xD), it's pretty much all day.
