Wireless and wired simultaneously?

Hello everyone,

Our team workspace has a wireless router connected to the internet, and while programming the robot we use an ethernet cable to connect a laptop to a different router connected to the robot.

One of my friends' laptops connects to the internet while in this setup, but mine does not; I surmise that my computer is attempting to connect to the internet through the robot network, which of course fails.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to control the routing of my network traffic and allow these two networks to work together?

If it helps, some info: My friend runs Vista, I run XP. My IP on the wired connection is statically set to 10.13.18.6, as expected. My IP on the wireless network is static as well: 10.1.18.176, and gateway 10.1.16.1 (I have confirmed this works perfectly if the wired network is not plugged in).

Any insight and pointers would be greatly appreciated; thank you.

I'm not sure about Vista, but you could connect the 10.1.* network to the WAN port of the robot's router, and use that router for internet access as well.

When you static the IP, don't set a gateway. I believe it's putting it into the routing table on the computer and thus, yeah, trying to use the robot network for internet.

Although there's that fancy router thing, it's not really being used as a router, more of as a switch with all the clients with static IPs. You're not using the WAN port of the router, just the other ports, which are switched ports.

I've got that setup running on XP right now. Only difference with yours is that I'm connected wirelessly to the DS router and I have an ethernet connection for the internet. It's awesome, I can debug the robot wirelessly while posting on Chief delphi.

Make sure what ever device that connects to the robot is statically set to 10.xx.yy.6. I have the subnet set at 255.0.0.0 and I left the default gateway blank. My ethernet device is set to obtain an ip address automatically.

Everything seems to work okay. Firefox knows to use the connection with access to the internet and the FRC cRio imaging tool + wind river + labview have no problems finding and connecting to the robot.

Thanks for the support. The problem was that I had set the Default Gateway, thinking it was necessary. I have removed it, and hopefully it will work on Monday.

Do you not have DHCP on this wireless network? or am I missing something...

I was using this setup also on XP and I found that I *had* to set the default gateway explicitly. When I used the wired connection to 10.*.*.6 XP was creating a default gateway on that domain and I lost connection to the internet on my wireless. I added explicit default gateways for both the 10.* (the laptop itself) and 192.168.* (the wireless router) and life was good again.

If you have problems you can use either 'netstat -r' or 'route print' to see what your default gateway was before and explicitly add it to your wireless TCP/IP settings.
