Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

So, IRI is coming up fast and I had a question about what teams do for pits at IRI.

Is it normal for teams to bring there full get up (banners and all) or just the necessities. Also is it normal for teams to get a full 10x10 space?

fsgond 14-07-2009 14:56

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

We have a compact pit that we usually bring. We do usually take the entire 10x10 (or whatever they give us) pit, but we have a lot of people that like to be in the pit. We had a different pit that we could take on a bus for Atlanta purposes and that was the one that we would usually bring. We have a new pit this year that goes everywhere with us, so I am thinking that we will take our "new" normal pit. Banner and all of that, we have in the past to show off our sponsors. It is all up to the students on what they want to bring and what they think they will need, with a little guidance of course. Bring what you will need, if you have room bring what ever you want.

IndySam 14-07-2009 15:04

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

We usually do a minimal pit for IRI. It's hard to do a complete pit set up and get the robot ready and in line for the short practice time avaliable.

Also it's nice not to worry about a long pack up time.

A bit offtopic at the moment. But 2081 just got news that we have an invite because a team dropped and we were on the waiting list. As of tomorrow, we will be kicking it into high gear trying to get ready and seeing if we can pull off going to a competition after a while of inactivity, wish us luck:)

Pardon me if this will come off as sounding weird, but if you're a Wisconsin team going to IRI with an easy way to move lots of carpet to Milwaukee, WI, it'd be really great if you PMed me to coordinate extremely non specific, sketchy plans for a practice scrimmage that might not even happen. Thanks ^_^

Edit: Nevermind, aforementioned event in Milwaukee isn't happening. Guess I've got to convince the drive team to... take a long drive.

So that scouting book I was talking about making is looking less and less feasible. I might eliminate some of the fields and try and get it done (or at least I'll release a "picture book") but between limited information on a lot of teams and a lack of confidence in my ability to describe mechanisms / guess ball capacity I doubt you'll see much. Sorry >.>

Just my opinion, but I would definitely spend more time in Yellowstone if you can swing it! I've been there hiking twice and its one of the most amazing places on the planet. Be sure to visit the "Daisy" Geyser. ;)

If you want a college tour at SDSMT, now might be a good time to let them know you might want one. Allow 1/2 day or so in the day after you make Keystone--you'll probably have enough time. (The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is in Rapid City, about 1/2 hour away from Keystone if that.)

Match schedules will be available Friday morning, passed out to teams as they register in the foyer area. We will have 8 matches per team, figuring that we run a 6.4 minute cycle time from match to match.

If I recall correctly, we pulled off 6.x second cycles at the MI Championships (x less than 5). There were even some who were pushing to schedule 5.5 seconds. This caliber of teams and volunteers can handle it easily. Especially with that ^ volunteer.

One of the things that can slow down things worst is an announcer/MC. Keep the introductions on track, and you can make up time from an occasional slow round. But if you have a slow announcer or MC, you constantly lose time. (I don't know who's doing it at IRI.)

You'll see some familiar faces from the Boilermaker Regional volunteering at IRI, so the 6.4 min turn around doesn't surprise me a bit.

Stu Bloom as head ref

Mark Koors as FTA (aka: the cleaner)

Mark will keep us near a 6 minute cycle time. The key for this year's game is the correct # of field reset people.

Since we had to make up so much time, we were moving. At one point, we were consistently running matches in the 5:30 range...and even that felt slow.

It was an interesting flight from Austin. Flying into Dallas, we had to avoid a rough storm system and go up and around and down to get into Dallas. At times, the sky looked a funny green and somewhat purple in the distance. Turbulence was a big part of that ride.

Leaving Dallas for Indy - same thing, lots of turbulence. Both flights were on time and the flight crews were outstanding. It's good to be here!

I did feel bad for one young boy who couldn't decide if he needed his barf bag or not. His twin brother and his dad were great with letting him make that decision. I think he decided he just liked looking down inside the bag. They know all about the opportunities for college scholarships and the FIRST program now. :)

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

1114 was practicing and looking as good as ever. Kind of shocking to be right up against them and then they shoot over your robot right into your trailer. Figured out how to "beat" that kinda. Other than that all I saw was 1771 and they were a little slower than before but I think that got fixed. 2753 was really good at dumping and their fan gave them a ton of power. That's about all I saw on the field today.

2194 now looks a lot like 1918 with a new gravity dumper. 47 obviously has a new robot, never saw it play.

Hi Barry,

I took the data right off the FMS system - exported it to a PDF and uploaded it on that same server. That's about as official as it gets. ;-)

Tomorrow should be fun! I'm surprised looking at the standings at how many good teams are quite a ways down in the rankings. There are a lot of teams at the competition who are using new drivers and depending on how your alliance picks work out, you could lose a lot of matches while still playing extremely well. That's what good scouting should help sort out. The playoffs should be outstanding!

Cheers,
John

P.S. Team 973... we'd LOVE to have you join The Foley Freeze (look for the light blue tie-dyed shirts and the silver hair). We've got more freezer-pops to give out tomorrow along with silver and blue beads so come on by!

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

973 is welcome to come hang out with 1714. We're out of cheeseheads bout you can have a shop rag and look at our robot.

I've met some of the nicest people I've ever worked with here so far. Joined alliances I could never have dreamed of, having the time of my life, and generally just having fun. I've got to give special shout-outs to a few teams. The Thunderchickens drive team was willing to move autonomous positions so we could test something even though they worked a lot better where they normally ran, and they were really fun to drive with. I've been talking to 2753 a lot and they've also been really nice, plus they're letting us use the back of their sign to hold ours. 1675 has also been assisting us just like the good old days, and being able to see old friends and partners like 980 and 2970 is great.

Since everyone's making lists tonight, I'd make sure you watch our matches on Saturday if you're worried about our shooting (a memory bug made a handful of our matches have an odd amount of lag with our shooter that we've now fixed 5000%), and feel free to come talk to us to figure out any questions you have about our robot and strategies. When it comes on TBA, the 135 / 47 / 1714 match is the one I'll be watching over and over again. I would be thrilled to be on that alliance again. Hint hint. :D

TBA also shows 1114 having a 0-0 tie in their third match (least, that's the one I remember). Now, the only way I can account for that is a) bad match and therefore replay, b) DQ, which hasn't happened yet, or c) TBA has a minor error.

Oh, and Nick--see the end of the thread asking about the webcast. It's not the best, but it'll have to do.

Team 832 won it's last match on Friday. They are 6 -0 going into Saturday. Got that from their Mentor.

Winnovation #1625 won their two matches today. They're the first team to go 8-0 today. Chimera #832 and Thunderbots #980 are both 7-0 with one match to go.

That'd be really nice, because it's going to be epic.

Does anybody know what's wrong with it?

I didn't see any of it yesterday because I was busy, but I heard the webcast was on at one point, but then it stopped working around 4.

I've heard that the school doesn't have that. They were able to get one out yesterday; would be nice if there was one today.

Congrats to the #3 seed led by Winnovation.

Chimera #832 had a good run during the quals, but couldn't do it in the elims. They were gracious in letting their 4th team play in the 2nd match. As they say in Chicago, maybe next year!

Anyone have a list of the awards and winners??

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

I'll probably end up making a bunch of posts about IRI just because I can't fit everything I'll want to say in one post / I'll forget stuff. So yeah.

My team had technical problems that probably cost us one of our matches (the other two we were either fully functional (vs 71) or it didn't matter (with 67). We got way better on Saturday and the matches that we worked in were a blast, though. It's truly a great event when you practice with the Chickens, then play with Delphi and HOT all in the same day, having fun with all of them. Ending with probably the best match I've ever played in all of FIRST certainly didn't hurt at all. Overall, it was an extremely fun competiton, and I'll be watching Match 21 and 90 over and over again for the rest of the year.

As for the teams we met there, I personally loved hanging out with 2753. Guess I've got a thing for rookie teams or something, I dunno, but I had a ton of fun cheering for you guys in the elims. I hope our team's paths cross again (or I see you somewhere in the Northeast next year). I'd go on forever if I went in depth and thanked every team I hung out with (980, 1675, a few stray Chickens) but I'm still impressed with the kindness and professionalism.

I've got to thank one of the programmers from team 1902 (Sorry I never caught your name) for giving us a possible solution to the lag problem that grounded our shooter in some of the qualifiers. What you suggested led us to the solution and we would not have figured it out without you.

If anyone has video of Qualification Match 90, please PM me. Thanks to all the teams and congratulations to the third seed for a well deserved win!

.

Also worth noting:No halo tonight.

I can definetaly relate to your story. Last year was amazing and I am still watching match 7. Had a great experience.

Huge congratulations on a job well done to teams 1625, 68,469, and 16 with their championship win at IRI!

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

I was very sad to see 1771 and 2753 get knocked out early, but the sheer fact that these teams were picked at IRI is a great accomplishment. On the other hand I was deeply impressed and happy for 222 and Winnovation's alliance. Definitly awesome to hear that they won and that 222 was a finalist with an amazing alliance.

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

i had to say this was my favorite IRI. so how many people enjoyed Qualifying match 95?

we told people to be watching that match. our coach wore a UPS shirt(1675), our secondary driver wore a 217(thunderchickens) shirt, and i (main driver) wore a cyberblue 234 shirt, when we faced 980, 217, and 234. we did it as a fun little joke to see people's reaction. most people enjoyed the little switch up. If you saw that match, what were your thoughts on 1529's goofy fun attitude?

it was rather funny me wearing a 234 shirt. my dad later told me a story how he was standing next to a 234 parent and the adult asked who in the world was "that kid" over on this [the blue side] of the field, and allegedly my dad just laughed and said "that's my son, he's on 1529"

Re: 2009 IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational)

I thought for a second the Chickens and 234 were driving the robot. You guys managed to hold the alliance back for the first minute, which made things interesting enough that I promptly forgot about your drivers. :D
