Pics And Vids! 816 1-31-09!!!!!!!

Finally, After all of the promises I've come to deliver! Our robot is about about 95% done so all we need to do its decorate and program! Some of the features in the final robot aren't shown in the videos due to some programming issues that we're currently having. I did the math today and we should be able to hold between 21 and 24 balls.

In the videos here, I'm Driving and DannyMcC is operating.

Pictures First:

Anomaly V 8.0 With 7 Balls Loaded

Anomaly V 8.0 Empty

Anomaly V 8.0's Control Board

Here's the Videos:

im curios, how many days a week does your team meet and for how long?
Because you seem to be done with your robot with 2 weeks to spare and thats pretty amazing.
Anyway,
now you have 2 weeks to test it so congratz.

EDIT: looks tall! how tall is it aprox? And those balls are not getting much distance. You better have an effective traction control system so you can drive right up to the trailers and wait for the balls to get slowly dropped in. unless you have a different strategy.

Thanks!! We meet Monday-Thursday from 3-7/8, Friday from 3-5:30 and Saturday from 9-3. That being said we spent the first week building the field and designing the robot and it took about 3 weeks of solid build to get it to this point. Sometimes a little extra design and fore-thought goes a long way.

As far as the height: last time I measured it was 54" tall give or take a bit. Our range is off in that video because our top roller wasn't spinning right but the range isn't far it's about 1 foot at most. As far as traction control we don't have any in programming... It's all in my left and right hands.

Wow... we spent 3 weeks doing nothing but CAD-work, prototyping, and other types of design. We just started building this week! The upside to that is, though, that we know exactly what our robot will look like and what parts we need to make/order in order to finish it. Maybe it would have been a good idea to start building sooner - we have almost no time to test our finished robot.

haha thats pretty awesome... i love how its constantly collecting and spitting out balls, seems very cool... when you drive, are you finding it difficult to turn and such?

Thanks! The ball pickup is so awesome, it makes picking them up incredibly easy.

As far as driving I find it very easy. With the trailer certain moves become harder to do but it's really all about your driving style. Personally I like to slide around so it's fine with me.

have you tested driving with the trailer and trying to score? b/c getting to a goal pulling a trailer is a lot different maneuvering...

These guys CAD out all parts too in detail...they just do it really fast.

Great job guys. I wouldn't expect anything less.

Yeah. I spent a while today pulling a trailer and picking up balls. It's not as hard I thought it would be. It is a lot different though but not as hard as people make it seem. Sorry I don't have video with the trailer. The person videoing had to leave.

Operating the robot with only two functional buttons is really fun. Imagine the exponential growth of fun with six buttons.

For their design its actually easier while driving with the trailer (eye saws its). The maneuverability is great because some turning is improved with it.

Haha it's cool. IMO it's actually easier to drive with a trailer than without.

haha yeah... Like Danny eluded to, We only had a third of our operator functions working for that test. We're having some weird control problem with Labview that we need to debug...

Do you guys have a way of blocking the ball exit while picking up balls? I remember back in 06, teams would have 2-3 balls in their system and would have to shoot those out before collecting more (really bad when the max capacity was like 20).

Hey guys, your robot looks great, I'm just wondering

I noticed that the entire front is used for ball collection, meaning you wont be able to put any bumpers on it. Will you have enough room for a 2/3 bumper perimeter.

I only mention this because our team was concerned about it and we have 12 inches of bumper on the front.

Great work though, are you planning on being able to stop your collection system and wait to release the balls or will it be constant?

In the controls the scoring conveyor system can be stopped however the programming was glitchy and would for some reason control that too. Otherwise, its basically you store after intaking the balls.

Sorry for answering your questions guys :p

If you look closely at the pictures, you can see that there is a 6" long piece of kit frame rail at each side of the front, so they can indeed put the required bumpers on it.

Neat design, great progress, thanks for posting!

We are the same, this is our slowest year however, it takes about 2 weeks every year for a final design. THen we build and we build slowly and carefully.

We can store balls inside of our conveyor belt system by reversing the top most roller. We're having an issue with our program right now so it wasn't working in the videos

Thanks! And We can fit 2 six in bumpers on the front.

For the conveyor, is that a form of chain? Like plastic chain?

It's adjustable length V belting. It's made of a whole bunch of little plastic/rubber links that twist together.

I don't typically like to give advice on robot design. I assume people know what's best for their own robots. But I think you need to rethink your top roller system. From the videos, it looked like the balls just fell out when they got to the top. Even when you didn't want them to.

If you move the top conveyor roller over and add a second output roller right next to it, you can make the conveyor and output two separate systems and eliminate the balls falling out. The balls would pile up at the top and be ready for dumping when you actually wanted to. Should be an easy fix looking at the design you already have and you still have plenty of time.

Alrighty dude, when we were talking on with team 816 a few weeks ago and asked what they were doing (EWCP). They said a shooter/dumper combo. So their plan is to have mass storage and bring it up like a shooter. But instead of shooting, they are making it a dumper. So hope that clears the confusion.

The top roller acts as a stop most of the time. We're having a programming issue at the moment so it won't reverse. When working correctly the balls stage in our conveyor system.

Most of the programming has been sorted out and we've made some minor mechanical tweaks. For those of you worried about us storing, here's a pic. We store 7 deep and 3 wide.

Hit up McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) page # 1030.
Alternately search "belting" and it should come up.
