Hey Raul, I don't know what you're finding so hard. 217, 148, 1114, and 254 pics are just as easy to find as 111 pics ... oh, wait ... never mind :ahh:

Never mind the bumpers...

Sizing box? Weight limit? Only powered by the battery, pneumatics, springs, and/or stored energy? Designed to play Lunacy?

Please note that there is no Team 217 Teaser #4 and don't hold your breath waiting for one. We will show a picture of our robot (full disclosure) after it is wired and looks all pretty.

I can tell you this: our robot has more chrome than the one Raul has pictured in this thread. I can also tell you that we are using 8 motors, 6 encoders, the camera and over 1,000 rivets ....

I know rivets are awesome, but a thousand. Can't wait to see your bot.:ahh:

We used over a thousand rivets last year...but I think only a couple hundred were on the robot at one time :)

Can't wait to see the finished product, Paul!

I swear we used over 1000 rivets taking things on and off, on and off, on and off, etc.
I bought out 3 hardware stores for $200.00.

I hope you have one of these. :D

Probably have about 100 rivets on our bot ;)

But I wish we had more. That tool is far too much fun!

If we're talking random vehicles with "217" on them, I prefer the 217 car pulling the camper trailer in that video of a race in England posted in a CD thread I can't seem to find. Hilarious stuff.

I imagine the attachment in this post would be a good start in verifying Paul's rivet claims.

Knowing 217, it's probably a transformer....don't be alarmed.

Huh? We have 3 working, and the last one is a hardware issue

Can't wait to see it, 217!

At that rate, get 16 encoders and then the 4 of them you need will be working.

Just curious, do you just use POP rivets or do you ever use solid rivets?

Paul Copioli 16-02-2009 10:56

Re: pic: 217 entry?

We just use POP rivets. They are cheap, easy to use and have never failed us. We never really considered any other kind because they work for us. To take it one step further, we only use 5/32" aluminum rivets. Their strength and ease of installation / removal are perfect for a FIRST robot.

Raul 16-02-2009 11:20

Re: pic: 217 entry?

Hmmm, we have been using 1/8" aluminum pop rivets since 1996 on our robots and they work out fine. We just use steel one when we need extra holding strength.

The aluminum rivets make a good mechanical fuse when you want a built-in failure point. When things are likely to break, it is good to design for failure in the right locations such that minimal functionality is lost in the middle of a match and repair is quick and easy.

Paul Copioli 16-02-2009 11:29

Re: pic: 217 entry?

We use 5/32" due to the fact that our original sheet metal manufacturer didn't want to laser such a small hole (they only had a laser). We compromised on 5/32" (they wanted 3/16").

Hmmm. Not sure how 45 has been using those. I just unpacked a crate of extra material set aside from last season when working with a rookie team and found a Team 45 pop-rivet gun. That somehow made it into our stuff at Nationals or IRI last year. (feel free to use loaning out your pop-rivet gun to team 3119 in your chairman's submission).
By the way your team didn't happen to find an "extra" set of "Behind the Design" books at nationals did they?

P.S. PM me an address and I will get a Pop-riveter in the mail.
